Brodie, I live around the corner, from the power district site, where the ballpark and district is. They just started clearing the old ABH truck terminal last week. They are taking out the last of the concrete pad this week. Next door is the old abandoned hotel, that's going to come down soon. This group is moving right along, wasting no time prepping the site.

It is insane to think about how far Salt Lake City has come in such a short amount of time. I used to live a couple blocks away from the area known now as the "power district". One of the most crime-ridden areas of town when I was living there. To see the renderings and to hear how much money is being pumped - both publicly from the state and privately from Larry H Miller group - into revitalizing that part of town is truly remarkable, especially when you take into account how much money is already being pumped into downtown Salt Lake around Delta Center to revitalize that part of town. This is going to be a - no pun intended - game changer for Utah as a whole over the next eight years as they get ready for the Olympics in 2034.

Ryan Smith was proactive with The NHL and worked within that system to make NHL hockey in Salt Lake happen.
Utah has $900 million for an MLB stadium at the ready. Utah baseball is making the right moves. There are so many variables beyond Utah's control. MLB expansion is a big "we don't know." Tampa, The A's and more are so influx and we have no idea of the final picture.

The Miller Group and the state of Utah has gone about this the smart way. It has quietly got its ducks in a row so if an MLB team becomes available either via relocation or expansion literally everything needed is ready to go immediately. Unlike in other situations where it’s a lot of bluster and maybes. I also suspect the Miller Group has been quietly in contact with MLB behind the scenes and has probably touched base with teams like the A’s, White Sox, Rays, and even the Diamondbacks just to explore possibilities and let them know they’re ready to make a deal if the situation is ripe.

According to an article on KSL, the deal "includes an opt-out clause should Salt Lake City incentivize a current MLB owner to relocate to Utah's capital over the first 10 years of the deal, as well as two five-year extensions to the clause." So does this mean that the deal is only for the Miller Group? Would a relocating team not qualify for the $900 million? Maybe the only way a team can relocate is if an owner sells the team to the Miller Group? Or am I reading that opt-out clause wrong?

    • @bartphlegar8212

Nashville isn’t getting a team. Too many issues. The Sounds helped pays for their stadium there and have a long term lease. Nashville has to buy them out for at least $100M and it could be higher. Then they have to spend $1 billion on a stadium after building the new Titans stadium. Many politicians lost their jobs over that one.
Charlotte is in the same boat. Long term lease with the AAA team that will cost a lot of money to break and a ton being spent on a football stadium.
On the east coast, Raleigh will get the baseball team. It has the highest median income of any market that does not have MLB. It has invested in transit. It already has an owner attached.
I would bet SLC and Raleigh will be the expansion cities if the A’s finalize in Las Vegas and the Rays finish their St Pete deal.

Being in Kansas City, and a longtime Royals season ticketholder, of course my fear is that the Royals are in play. Their lease of Kauffman stadium expires after the 2029 season. About two years ago, the team brought in an inspector to essentially condem the stadium ruling it unsafe. Then a bond measure for a downtown stadium in Kansas City MO failed miserably at the polls. But long before that, the Mayor and other local politicians complained that the Royals seemed to have no interest in discussing a replacement for Kauffman, in spite of their effort to condem the stadium. Now the Kansas side has expressed interest in the team, moving it about 10 miles to the former Sprint campus, but this would be funded with "Star Bonds", which are generally considered worthless. All the while the Royals still have one of the lowest attendence numbers, even as they ramp up thier player budget to make a World Series contender team for years to come.
Here are some sad facts, when I moved here from Los Angeles as a child, Kansas City had the Royals, the Kings (who were the Cincinatti Royals and had to change their name), the Scouts NHL team (now the Denver Avalanche), and of course the Chiefs.
At our peak in 1980, Kansas City was the number 19 media market, now we are below 40. Of course the Kings and Scouts are long gone, the Chiefs have revenue sharing. At one point in the late 90s The Kansas City Royals MLB franchise had a total value of less than $300 million.
Now the Royals are owned by a group of people, the city continues to lose corporate employers on the Missouri side. Hell we even had all of Applebees restaurants close about a month ago, and they started in Kansas City.
By contrast Omaha is considered one of the best places to live, and climate change will make it more and more appealing. Few people remember this, but the Kansas City Kings were orginally the Kansas City / Omaha Kings.
The White Sox will likely not move, but I would still say that team is worth at least double that of the Royals, and Chicogians are very sentimental, and will almost certainly find a way to keep the team there. My guess is that sometime around the 2027 winter meetings, the Royals will announce it's intention to move, after the Rays attendence in Omaha will exceed the Royals.
Nashville is geographically close to St Louis, probably the best baseball town outside of New England. And Nashville has so much organic growth, I think a baseball team will end up there no matter what.

Brodie, you said, "one or two more expansion teams". At first I thought an odd # would mean every 15 series with 15 vs 15 a team would have a 3 day bye. Every 15 series. That will not work because they would have 9 days to the length of the season or reduce the games played by 9. So 153 games. Owner would lose 4-5 home games =$$ lost. I was intrigued, but at first glance it won't work, right?

I feel like the MLB should probably figure out where the 30 teams they have will be playing before expanding. Though the NHL expanded twice with the Coyotes debacle hanging over their heads. That said I want to see how all the legislation was written, because even if the A's (it would probably be them) decide that where they're going won't work (the holdups in Vegas prove too much) and go to SLC, a new stadium would still take 2-3 years to build, By then it'll be 2027-28 at the earliest and new elected officials will be in place.
