  • 1987 Coleman Columbia pop-up canvas camper to hard side conversion
the original roof, base/frame, door, sink and stove were kept
we replaced the original electrical box/panel due to it being corroded and not functioning reliably
the fridge, water pump and water tank were all new additions
unfortunately, i did not make much of an effort to document the process of this build other than a few photos
if you are more interested in the how-to,
there is a really helpful series on youtube by
    / drez20001
he creates a more in depth, step by step process of the hard side conversion
a huge part of the inspiration for our build, especially in the beginning stages, came from this series
so thank you Drez for documenting that process
hope you enjoy this tour! :)

Very nice conversion, but I have a couple of suggestions. 1 you should make some kind of rigid lockable cover for your propane tank and your battery , batteries should not be exposed to the elements because moister will drain your battery and a lockable cover will deter theft.2 it might be a good idea to get yourself a small portable cassette toilet they are easy to use and they can be stored under any cabinet plus they are not very expensive ,look on line for the different models, and price ranges. This will help if you have inclement weather, also will be safer for you at night. That is all I can think of ,so good luck ,have fun and may the Lord bless you .

Back in the 80"s my mom bought an old pop up camper whose canvas tent was rotted. On an old singer sewing machine, she made, by hand, a new canvas tent complete with screen windows, metal zipper flaps, triple seams throughout. I would go to see her and find her buried in the midst of a mountain of heavy canvas and that old machine going whirr-whirr-whirr. She sanded and painted the wooden box portion too. She was amazingly creative. Your camper is adorable and you and your dad did a great job on it.

Amazing! I love it! It is definetly a master piece! It's obvious your father is very gifted. Such beautiful work. I have a 1996 Coleman pop up trailer that I purchased a few months ago. It had no refrigerator, , toilet, or sink.. I have purchased a dorm room refrigerator, a porta potty for my wife, a free used propane grill from the curb that I cut down to a double burner grill instead of the 4 burner. It looks so cute being miniturized😂. I added two small pneumatic tires on one end of the grill and a handle on the opposite end to lift and pull it around easily. I have a propane hose so it can be used indoor if raining or outside when no rain. We love being able to use it either way. I just got in my miniture stainless steel sink that Im going to add to one end miniture BBQ pit so they will stay together as a unit. . My wife prefers them outside of the popup on nice days so we have more room inside. Our porta potty has its own tent for when we put it outside of the trailer. We just got finished rebuilding the roof. Man was that a job😒 but that repair is now completed. Our pop up was gutted when we bought it. I'm retired now so this has been the project I do when its time to get away from the TV😆. We have been using a tent for years but the last time I put it up it was hard on my old knees so we decided to buy a used pop up camper to restore. We are both 60 y/o and I just retired after 30 years of welding for the same company here in Tx. Everything we have is paid for. So now its time for some enjoyment in life🙂.

I own a Coleman pop-up trailer, from 1986 and it’s in great condition. This is very impressive work great job! All I’m doing to mine is adding new vinyl plank flooring that looks like wood and painting the old wood base bench seating a different color and going to use a plastic laminate film on the countertops to look like marble.

With my family we used to have a Star Craft pop up camper while we were camping. It was really fun in camping. Only one summer we went camping almost the entire summer. I was 6 years old going on 7 years old during the summer that my family did that. We did take our first cat camping with us. That cat wanted to go outside a lot. He was a pain while we were camping. He always came back to the site. My dad boarded him at this kennel in the town that my grandmother lived in so we went camping in Minnesota with my grandmother. She stayed in the van during that trip. This was her 2nd time in camping with us. It was fun with her. She was my father’s mother. I think that my other grandmother won’t handle camping. My father sold it towards a friend’s daughter with her family to enjoy camping in it. My last memory of sleeping in the camper was during the summer of 1990 just overnight. We didn’t take our 2nd cat camping with us. He would have been good in camping. He would’ve stayed very close to the camper and even slept with me or my sister.

That’s good I have a little camper like that. We went to one of the campsites near me on the near kill Devil Hills Mall in north Carolina. But we were tent camping at the time which was very good memories for me. Anyone that had a motorhome would have to go in one of the flies and mosquitoes would come out. But me and my family would go in the tent and still get some very cool breezes at the time. So at that time, I have some very fond memories well, thank you for listening to me and have a great day.

I love what you & your father have done with your vintage Coleman! Absolutely 💯 functional, homey & much more secure than fabric pop ups. As a female who loves vintage Rv’s & campers this is the best pop up conversion & remodel I’ve ever seen. I’ve had several pop ups & my favorite was the 1972 Hard Side Apache Ramada which like yours was much more secure than canvas sides & that’s important to me. The only things I could respectfully suggest to you would be getting a cassette toilet or something similar to have inside so you don’t need to go outside at night. It’s not nearly as safe as it used to be camping as we all know. You could also put a little cover & cushion on it & have a little chair when not in use 😊I always carry several different types of personal protection..ya never know 😐 I also have a couple of cameras on the outside of my Rv trained on the doors & windows. You can pick up this stuff very reasonably. Beautiful Work, I’m Subscribing & Look Forward To More Camping & Camper Videos!! Thank You!!

I’m part of a group called “Girl Camper,” you should check this group out. We have so much fun! Women get together and tow their RV’s. We enjoy going all over the states seeing the sights!

Nice for one person. Cozy and a good idea to harden the walls of a former pop-up.

The vinyl stone piece is awesome! In the 60’s in upstate NY there were SO MANY houses that had stone foundations. This looks just like them!
Just goes to prove what we say in the Zentangle world: there are no mistakes; only opportunities!

Very well done. I could see this as an alternative college dorm room in some settings. Join a 24 hour gym and you've got your bathroom and shower needs taken care of.

@@sandrajamieson7033 Students are school buildings all day, libraries, etc. Those places all have bathrooms. People who live in tiny spaces and vans needs to be resourceful, and many are already doing this.

Nice job, my best friend from MMI in Orlando did the same thing only his used pallet wood for his outside siding and then just burned it to bring out the grain of the wood and then stained it. Then sprayfoamed the insulation and used paneling that his brother gave him from his living room when they took it off and put drywall up then painted it. He had a loft bed also but he bought a cheap long dresser and modified it so he could put a small refrigerater in one side, he didn't have a sink in his, he just used paper plates and plastic utilsiles and threw it in the fire pit when he was done, he took an old metal microwave cart that he got from a flea market and cleaned it up added some metal to the legs to make it sit up higher and repainted it, he had a microwave, a crockpot and 9 function air fryer to cook food. He stayed at State Parks and National Forrests in and around Orlando for like $6 a day and they have bathrooms and showers. I don't remember what it cost him to build but I know it was well under $1000, after we graduated he became a a traveling tech for BMW and still lives in it today, when he gets moved he just attaches it to his S10 Blazer and takes off to wherever they send him next.
