- Kurt Cobain, lead singer of the rock band Nirvana, killed himself in April 1994. He was 27. Two months earlier the band had been in Paris, and had posed in an unplanned photo shoot with photographer Youri Lenquette. Lenquette and Cobain were friends and the singer arrived at the studio with a gun, which he used as a prop in many of the photos.
Twenty years on, Lenquette is exhibiting all the photos from that session. Many have never been seen before.
Lenquette spoke to the BBC's Alain Galès about a day that became part of rock'n'roll mythology.
Kurt Cobain: The Last Shooting is on at the Addict Galerie in Paris from the 25th March to 21st June 2014.

Cobain had this affinity for guns, whether reflected in his lyrics or his photo shoots (no pun is intended). It figures he met his demise with one.

I think it's the mascara...but yea...the scariest looking photo of Kurt I've seen is the one where he's with that fan, holding a gun to the kid's head with that mascara on. Crazy. He definitely had issues that were hereditary (multiple family suicides...also, watch the interview with his uncle). Sadly, a lot of creative people have major issues. He probably could've lived if he would've sought help.

He had difficult life but wasn't really depressed or wanted to die. It was rather his dark and sarcastic sense of humor which many people always have misunderstood.

Every forensic expert who has looked at the letter has said it’s not a suicide letter and that it’s fake. The only “expert” who concerned otherwise was one in the Seattle Police Department, and they only examined it after there was a stink about it not being authentic. They had motive to lie to save face for SPD. If it really was legit, other experts would have corroborated, but not a single one has.

I read that the gun was actually a BB gun that was just laying around the studio and Kurt picked it up and wanted to use it as a prop. The article I read said that the photographer found his behavior disturbing. What to believe?

You had to be there to really understand the effect Nirvana had on music and youth culture. Just like I can't imagine what it was like to be a hippie in the 60s, kids today can't truly grasp what it was like to have witnessed the success of Nirvana and other "alternative bands like Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam ( who I didn't really like much when they came out. They just seemed too safe and wimpy), Soundgarden, Melvins, Dinosaur Junior, Butthole Surfers, Sonic Youth and Smashing Pumpkins to name but a few. It was just one of those rare times when everything seemed right. It gave an angry, cynical generation something they could be proud of and part of. We really thought things were gonna finally change and we were the ones who were gonna do it. Unfortunately, the powers to be killed it by signing bands that looked a certain way and sounded similar to the good bands of that era. In the end, nothing changed, which didn't surprise anyone. The last nail in the coffin was Kurt Cobain's murder. That took the wind out of everyone's sales. It confirmed why we were so cynical in the first place. We finally had someone our age putting out the best music ever. It's really amazing how short a time that Nirvana were around, making music. From the time "Nevermind" was released in September 1991 until his murder in April 1994 was only 2 and a half years. That really says a lot about the quality of Nirvana's music. In that short time they left a legacy that will never fade away. I miss the 90s. What a great time to be young ( I was 22 when "Nevermind" was released) the perfect age to bear witness to the magical aura of that period. I miss doc martens, ripped jeans and second hand flannel shirts.

Dali Llama, you're right about me saying "murder". I admit that I was brainwashed by a constant barrage of conspiracy theories. Through detailed researh and contemplation, I'm convinced that it was suicide. I know that "bleach" was released in 1989 on a small indy label with no connections to the companies that are able to provide them with massive distrubution. I bet 98% of people had no idea who Nirvana was until the release of "Nevermind" and it's debut single "Smells like teen spirit" which was a massive success and heralded a new generation's interpretation of rock'n roll. I didn't mention "Bleach" because I wanted to illustrate how the band came from the underground/alternative music scene to it's incredible success in the mainstream. What an incredible, uplifting and beautiful moment in time. I wish I was 20 years younger but I am so grateful that I was a young adult when I witnessed and experienced a rarely seen cultural transformation that happens far and between. I think talent like Kurt's is an extremely rare event. The only band that had a bigger impact were the Beatles. I'm sure many of you will think I'm crazy for saying that. Do me one favour. Think very hard and try to find any other band in rock 'n roll who had the effect on music, youth culture and society in general. You can't because they don't exist. If you think I'm wrong about this,please respond and let me know another band with a bigger impact. I don't have a problem with being wrong and I always acknowledge it with no malice towards anyone. If I missed one I'd sure appreciate yoir response. Thank you so much and may God and peace be with you for all the remaing days of your life.

Yeah, cuz the best time to cash in is definitely 20 years later, when Nirvana's popularity isn't anything close to what it was in the 90's. Not right after his suicide, which was Nirvana's pinnacle.

side note and to make clear: his songs lyrics are his talent and gift of putting into words his experiences and what was going on around him. CL didn't write his lyrics. but his lyrics are impressions and artistic expressions of the underlying turmoil of the situation he found himself in. plus some of the songs were about other aspects of his life and people he knew.

Gun laws in France were relatively lax prior to 1994. Anyone 18 and over could go into a pawn shop or sporting goods store and purchase a gun like this (FN Medalist .22 Target). You basically had to sign a paper stating you were going to use it for target shooting. Nowadays, I'm not sure, but back in the day I came home with several Belgian made FN/Brownings that I flipped stateside to collectors. I could buy them for €100 and sell them for $300. No problem flying with them either, as long as they were unloaded and in checked baggage. Of course, all of that is ancient history thanks to a certain religious group.

Kurt was starting to look pretty rough from all the heroin he was doing. I get no joy in typing this. Heroin addicts lose the radiance in their skin, which causes them to look dull and wasted. Kurt tried to hide some of this with makeup. Kurt was never secure with his looks in the first place and near his death he was not comfortable with how he looked.

In the last photo session, Kurt doesn’t look healthy and he points a gun to his head and in his mouth as jokes, I guess. But it wasn’t funny or cute. More like he was signaling so the last photos are very disturbing and unpleasant to look at in light of what happened later.

What an easy way to do away with someone...make it look like a suicide, then tell everyone the thing a month before was attempted suicide.
