Concerning the firewood: brings back the one thing my 6th grade teacher always beat into our heads when we were out in the desert with him, "Keep your name out of the newspaper."
Seemed like there was always a page 2 article about some industrial grade window-licking idjit that would get sidewinder bit or scorpion stung while hiking, and have to walk 10 miles in the dark before they could get help.
so - good job keeping your name out of the paper.

Finally someone desert camping!! Thank you. So many other channels are always up north in the forest with 100ft tree's and rivers where 80 degrees is considered hot😂well we don't have that here in the desert areas and good luck trying to find tree's big enough to hang a hammock. Please do more desert camping themed videos. Thanks again.

Helpful little hint: If at all possible, place your shoes/boots upside down on a tall stick overnight to keep scorpions or centipedes out of them while you sleep. I know you notice cowboys always pound their boots, heel first on the ground then shake them out to remove any night critters from them before they shove their feet into them. I'm a 80 year old Arizona native. Also before any camping trip I have always saturated my body with vitamin B-6 for three days prior to the trip then take one a day while out on the trip. Never got a mosquito bite even while camping along a river or creek. ( B-6 ONLY. NOT A B-COMPLEX)

You'll need a bigger bowl. But if u want spicy and not have to worry about adding seasoning. At any Walmart in the Asian section there is a Korean thing called shin ramen. Red or black. I prefer the red. I know I say you're not a noodle guy but it's good brother. Portable, quick, high caloric density, and really good. ALSO props for mentioning char cloth as modern. Wish other bigger survival channels had as much common sense and knowledge as you.

Great video, James! Loved how you got close to the kangaroo rat. I lived most of my life in the Sonoran desert and the only time I got close to one like that was right after a big flash flood and I found it stuck up in a bush, half drowned. I took it home, put it in a box with some rags to dry out and when it came to, it latched onto my finger and wouldn't let go. Fortunately, I was wearing a leather welding glove. So, I took it out to where I found it and shook it off.

Just remember with the agave stalk. Try to take stalks from ones that have already bloomed or from ones that are clearly not healthy. Removing the stalk from healthy agave can kill the plant. Also, if you catch one in bloom they are a sight to see.
Not a tree hugger or anything like that, justca guy who lives in the desert and enjoys the few plants we have.
Enjoy your videos, sir. Top notch.

    Nice video,
that hot pepper type originated here in Central America I think, it was here 30 years ago. Known as: Jalapiña Negra for the black color in especially the green stage. Whats most interesting about it, is it has an unusually good flavor, and isnt just hot. To grow peppers from seed, best to use really ripe peppers, and dry the seeds in wood ashes, so they will sprout consistently. in the wild, birds eat the peppers and seeds go thru their digestive tract before sprouting. the ashes have lye that mimics that effect.
Pepper seed just dried has poor germination rates, and that variety is open pollinated. So you can plant from the seed in them.
On your chilly night, I suggest you get a Milspec poncho liner. They started in the Vietnam era, and were a GI favorite and are still in production even for the civilian market.
Usually camouflage, have tie strings on the side edges, light weight nylon cloth, and synthetic fiber fill. They weigh almost nothing, compress tight, and will keep you warm at summer night temps.
I have a couple, one I use for bedding every night, and another in my bug out pack stuff. I think if you try one, you will be happy dog...

Question, with an open shelter like that, how do you prevent waking up with a snake, scorpion or other creepy crawlies crawling on you? Also, funny story, seeing you eat that roasted jalapeno reminded me of a time when I was a kid and my dad cooked some steaks on the grill. He had grown some jalapenos in the garden and picked three to roast in the coals. We sat down to dinner and my mom mentioned that her pepper was really mild, hardly any heat. My dad tasted his and said the same thing, so naturally I assumed mine would be pretty mild as well and just bit the whole thing off the stem and started chewing. The heat from their peppers must have somehow migrated to mine while roasting! 😂 To this day I think that was the hottest pepper I have ever eaten and yes, I tasted theirs afterward to see if they had been messing with me and theirs were indeed very mild.

For me, a little meat, chiles, corn, tortillas, pico, and avocado are good for cooking under the stars with brazas. I've been meaning to get one of those titanium mini grills for meat. The chiles tatemados are good. You can throw elotes on the brazas, too, and nopal pads, when they're in season. I would make room for a can of beans. Coffee with maybe instant oatmeal in the morning...
I like it when you hear that one coyote start singing before the rest join in. There are coyotes in San Diego County where I grew up.

That never ending struggle to get the jagged rocks outta your sleep spot is a constant in the southwest. James, for best success with a burnt out container, try making something called a trencher. Think of it as a medieval soup plate. That section of log you had would have been perfect, but, instead of burning from the top, you would split that log in half longways and burned in the trencher from the split side. This gives you a shallow walled, wide dish that can serve as either bowl or plate.
A trencher was designed to hold a piece of bread and have a simple stew or what would have been called porridge scooped over it, which would have been something like dried legumes or peas cooked down with a bit of stock for flavor. The shape lends itself very well to that type of eating.

    • @willong1000
      @willong1000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Have not seen anyone mention a trencher in recent memory, if ever! Since you know what a trencher is, I suspect that you also know what a trencherman is--eat heartily!

At first I thought you were going to just sleep on the rocky ground.. i would have changed places too, if my vehicle was shot up! I don't if they're easy to find in the Paso, but there are some really good Indian food packets (ready to eat) sold at HEB in Austin these days. Those, salmon packets, and a big box of saltines are a decent minimal (or no) cooking option. Love the coyote sounds. Glad they didn't attack your face while you slept. Those fumes coming off the wood - in WW2 they had some vehicles that ran (fueled by) on the vapors from wood.

Always look look forward to your uploads, looks like an awesome time. And like they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure. Nice use of the beer can to make char material.

There it is, again another awesome video. Thank you for being honest about going to your truck and getting firewood. A lot of TH-camrs would've tried to get away with that without saying anything so-called cheating.
Also those coyotes in the background fuckin awesome! That piece of wood that you were burning to make a bowl look to be elm to Me. Damn good idea to make char with the agave punk, works perfect.

My favourite way to camp is solo and under a trap. Thank God I keep my cooking spot and food spots are in different directions and over 50 meter part from where I sleep. Last year I had a bear come though.

i like this spot too. the mesquite trees aren't very tall but give you a lot of shade. looking forward to seeing more from your new camp.

We love these desert videos. How about one in the summer when the fire danger is high? How to build a fire when it might be dangerous but freezing at night? Really enjoy the materials you teach about. We made cactus pear jam....yum. Also made a drink with them too. We like to camp on our own property....lazy eh?
Ribera area....up on the bluff not by the river. Too bad.

if theres fire danger in my area, I will be respectful and not make a fire at all. its not worth making a video and risk starting a wildfire. id honestly jsut carry my gas stove and a wool blanket during summer. camping with no fire

Fantastic video. One of your best! I live in your area and I can't wait to take my young son out camping and teach him a bunch of the things I've learned from watching your channel. Keep up the good work.

I’m surprised you didn’t make your shelter in the trees? Neat what you did with the agave stalks.

I wanted the fire close to the shelter, but there was too much brush and dead grass beneath the tress, it wouldve been a wildfire hazard
