Cabin In The Cold: Polar Vortex Strikes Off-grid Retreat

- I cut firewood at the off Grid cabin all day, because the wood supply is starting to get low.
I wanted to get this job done before we head into another polar vortex of extreme cold weather. I stop for a late lunch then put the firewood in the storage tent. I was debating on whether I should stay the night before deciding I wasn't feeling up to it. I texted my wife for a pick up and did some chores waiting for a reply. Her texts weren't coming through until almost two hours after she sent them. By this time it wad too late so I ended up sleeping at the cabin. Overnight it was snowing and blowing making me concerned about road conditions. By late morning it was -35 C with the windchill and 82% humidity. I can tolerate the cold but I was freezing outside. I couldn't spend another night with it going down to -40 windchill so we scheduled a pick up despite messaging problems. The roads were drifted but not severely due to the wind direction.
Amazing, you brought a real saw to cut firewood with. Many thanks for the video.
Thank you Ron! I restored that saw myself
I have really enjoyed watching your videos 😁. Thanks for sharing this with me. Hello from Indiana USA and this 63 year old lady.
Thank you so much Jeanetta!💕
Nice to have such a great place to visit, please be safe
Thanks Michael! I always try to be safe🙏
Salmon looked really good. Thanks for the video brother
Thank you Mark! Take care my friend
Thanks for your channel. I enjoy it immensely.
@@mattgroves2215 Thank you Matt! I really appreciate you watching
I am believing this winter has been colder with more snow falling. Your meals are always wonderful. The salmon dumplings looked yummy. Perhaps some Sandefjordsmør sauce for the fillets. Take care and be safe from the cold winter conditions
Thank you very much for the kind words and suggestions! Take care and stay warm 🙏
Your cabin looked very cozy from the outside! This winter has been lots of work, but so pretty ❄️✌🏼😊
Thank you so much for watching. We've had more cold than snow this winter
Brrrr! Beautiful to look at from my warm home
It’s not so nice in person lol! Thanks for watching 🙏
Thanks!
Thank you very much! It really means a lot to me 🙏
This weather is indeed no joke. For any wildlife that's short of good health it's kill off time.
It definitely thins out the weaker animals unfortunately. Thanks for watching
That's not nice, hopefully you can home them
Hello Ken, great video. The colder it is outside the more wood you burn and go through. Night sleeps off grid with a wood-stove are always interrupted so you can stay warm and comfy. Take care, stay safe. Fred
You got that right Fred. The wood stove keeps me warm though. Thanks for watching!
Best place indoors on this weather 🔥🔥🔥
That's right Andrew! Thank you very much for watching
Very nice sharing 🌨️🥶🌨️🥶🌨️🥶🌨️🥶🌨️🥶🌨️🥶
Thanks for watching🙏
Very nice my dear friend 🙋🏻♀️🌹
Thank you very much 💕
That’s some dangerous weather Ken. Stay safe and warm and well!
We have warmed up to -25C today. I try to be safe Dan. Thanks for watching
That is some serious weather. Cozy sleeps to you!
Thanks John!🙏
Hi there...im new... what a lovely tiny cabin is !!!!❤❤❤
Thank you very much!
Enjoyed A man with a plan, new subscriber
Thank you very much John🙏
My biggest fear camping in the woods like that is those trees falling over and hitting the cabin. That's just me. We just had an ice storm. Kept me up listening to the trees explode in the woods.
I agree Sergey! I was very worried about a large tree landing on the cabin. During the night large clumps of snow were falling from the tall trees. It sounded like someone dropping bean bags on the roof from 50 feet in the air. Thanks for watching 🙏
Amazing your crafty survival item l am so sorry that that man can in and took what you have done and worked hard to get there should be a special place for people like that we love all your time and what you do to share with us take care❤
Thank you very much Linda! I really appreciate you watching 💕
First time watching great video thanks I watch Kent survival A lot anyway thanks Gabe Huntsville Alabama
@@Scorpio75-1rd Thank you very much for watching Gabe!🙏
🥶🥶🥶 I can not handle the cold.
The cold gets more difficult with age. Thanks for watching
I guess this is nothing I would consider wise to be doing… glad you were ok.
It can be very dangerous if not experienced. So many things can go wrong. Thanks for watching Carmen
Thanks nice video would love to try that
Thanks for watching Peter!🙏
Oooooooooooo. LOVE the dramatics! Well played. I was so sitting in the edge of my seat. I’m thinking about subscribing. You should teach others how to do the drama clickbait. Again, GREAT JOB!
Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!🙏
I experienced near -40° windchill once and it was brutal. I had 5 layers on and it felt like I was wearing nothing but a t-shirt when the wind blew.
Thanks for sharing that. The wind and humidity play a big role. Thanks for watching
Put some reflective insulation up on your walls. You would stay hell of a lot warmer i mean did you really think those thin walls would stay that warm with no real insulation,
@@deweyabbott5310 I don't recall ever saying it was cold inside the cabin. The inside thermometer said 95F. It sure was cold outside though. Thanks for watching Dewey 🙏
Now that’s a saw👍
Thank you Danny!
Part of the problem is pine doesn’t make good firewood. It’s good for cooking when you need fast and hot but it’s not lasting heat like hardwood.
@@zfilmmaker True. I did have a bit of Birch but that's the only hardwood we have
@ I can help you significantly keep your cabin warmer cheaply. Go to whatever building supplies store you have, if in the USA Home Depot/Lowes/Menards etc. Buy radiant insulation, you can buy a roll of adhesive foil but the bubble wrap insulation is better. Line your ceiling inside to reflect rising heat back into the cabin rather than escaping out. Also put some on walls behind and on the sides of the stove. It’s magic. For filming sake it reflects light so you may need sheer window drapes to soften the light but they will also create a barrier to keep the cold out.
It's difficult to sleep relaxed in the cold alone trick use the kitchen timer like mom Using the kitchen timer loaded every hour And the ticking you stay half asleep Sleeping with the oven on is very dangerous, you can suffocate. You must use solar systems To power electric heaters☺🤗😉😺
Thanks. When it's really cold I set my phone alarm for every 2 hours
@@ThelonelyscavengerOK right but the phone requires the electric charger which may not work mum's kitchen timer the classic cockerel always works mechanically A kiss Hello😂☺
@mirandanellas1600 very true
I dont see the frost coming through the walls , it does in the Yukon of Canada
Maybe because I have plastic sheets in the walls?
I enjoy your vids immensely, but I have a question (and I'm sure it's been asked previously) why do you not cover the windows over with curtains, blankets etc as the must let an awful lot of heat out and cold in? Take care from here in the 🇬🇧
I do have some curtains that I will use next time. Thanks for watching
I built a cabin in my backyard,i spent 40 years outside,no heat, nothing but blankets, could not stand having a door so i took it off
Thank you for sharing that Roger! Greatly appreciated 🙏
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you very much for watching Marie! I hope all is well 💕
Definitely need a better supply of firewood Ken. Stockpiled for the next trip out there too. That salmon looks tasty .
I do my best to keep up with the firewood. That woodstove is going the whole time I'm there. Thanks for watching William
What part of the world are you in? I guess you didn't check the weather before going?
I live in Alberta Canada. I was supposed to go home before the cold weather came, but it was too late for a pick up. Thanks for watching Ron🙏
@@Thelonelyscavenger I'm not trying to give you a hard time but I would have stayed home. I'm big on watching the weather forecast. I wonder how one of those Chinese diesel heaters would have worked at keeping your cabin warm in those temps. Last winter we were hit with one system after another with over a hundred inches of snow. This winter we have had one dusting and that's it so far. The winter isn't over though. northern AZ.
@ronwest7930 no problem. The cabin would be warm in -40 but I would have burned through a lot of my firewood that I had just cut. if we stayed home every time the weather was bad we would never get anything accomplished. I have 4 weather apps on my phone but the weather is unpredictable here. Hope that explains everything. Thanks again for watching 🙏
What vortex??? Didn't see a thing
Google it
It's better then sleeping out side
Very true. I probably would have died if I had slept outside
👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you Barry 🙏

I will look into that. Thanks!
Getting alot of views, my friend. Hope it helps on the wallet. God bless, stay safe, and Jesus is the only way. Call upon Him.
@@Turn-2JesusN0W Yes it is helping a bit. Nothing compared to similar channels though. Thank you very much for the support 🙏
I watched until the first commercial then I gave the video a dislike and left
@@spacecoyote6646 Well I'm barely scraping by so the ads help me and my family
Failure to prepare is preparing to fail. Why the hell dont u have a supply of wood already cut. Stupid
He did….it was under the tarp.
I do have a supply of wood cut, but to stay ahead I need to constantly cut more. It's an incredible amount of work with a saw and sled in that environment
Thanks!
@ it wasn’t enough to last the next day. Seriously
@ not easy I get it. Yr round endeavor
