This is the absolute best instructional video I have seen in years. Cant wait to watch the whole series. Your drums sound KILLER. I dont own a modern mac... so my garage band is well over 20 yrs old. I dont even know how to use my mac. It sits in the corner, all alone, watching my windows pc laugh at me because I can't use it either. Your video is making me want to go buy a new mac and dig in.
Been been using GarageBand as a drummer since 07ish and have always loved it. Glad to see musicians using it, and giving it props. It really is all you need. Most of what you made very educational for everyone I learned by much trial and error (and swearing.) You are a great teacher, and player; thanks for this video!
Girl. You made my fucking night. Not only are you super fucking cool and can actually play but you literally had the same interface as me! You have no idea how many videos I went through of dudes staring down at a piece of paper not knowing their ass from a hole in the ground who were making videos on connecting real drums to GarageBand without even showing a drum kit in the video!
Fantastic! Just found your awesome tutorial as I was looking for Garageband recording tips. Right on the money and easy to understand! Thank you so much!!!!! Greets from Germany! 🥁👍😊
Thank you so much for this video, I'm just getting into recording, and this helped so much. Looking at the comments, others feel the same way. Killer content!
Just found these videos. Thank you so much for the detailed tutorial. I just have one question for this part. If I want to add a click for me to hear, where would I place that??
Just found this video because I am looking on how to use garageband tutorials. Very nicely done. I am going to be coming back and pay a lot more attention due to the fact I have a New Mac Mini (upgraded) coming in a couple weeks and will be hooking my Tascam Model 16 into it with 8 Drum mics (Pearl Studio Session Select) along with a few more inputs for optional instruments (Bass & Lead Guitars along with a keyboard). P.S. Exceptional job on the Drums. See you Later, Ward L.
Great video! This was super informative and helpful. I just went thru learning this process a few months back to use for a full band. It’s honestly so much easier than I ever would’ve thought. Make sure you have all tracks record enabled or you’ll be bummed if you’re trying to catch stuff live :)
So glad to hear it was helpful! I know it's a long video and a bit dull at times - but if it's useful and you learned something, that's what counts! Best of luck to you.
How do you get every drum input? Cause my mixer only shows as a output not several inputs. I have a red and white cable connected to my mac on both r sides. I’m so confused I’m new to this so yeah 😅
I have a question I bought some drumming samples and I’m trying to put them in GarageBand and I don’t know how lol 😂 please I need your help I have some samples like how you triggered your kick how did you put the trigger in there?
Awesome video, very informative. I was going to purchase the focusrite, but after watching your video I think I am going to get the tascam it seems very user friendly.
Hello I’m having some trouble getting my tascam 16/08 to recognize my snare mic on channel 2 but all other lines 1,3,4,5,6 are working just fine any advice thanks
As for covers, how am I putting in the song with my drumbeat? I get how to get my drums in garageband but what about the song audio? This has to do with the channel 10 and Spotify inforight?, but how do you listen/play to it while it simultaneously records? Still confused by it... im a slow learner🔥
question, so I did everything in the video, but for some reason, I can only hear one mic at a time. I’ll click one of the tracks, and i’ll only hear the sound from that mic, and not all of them. Thanks
Would you be able to make a video over how the tascam settings effect GarageBand? Do I mess with the DAW first or mess with the Tuscan first. These questions might seem confusing because I am asking them away from the kit to try and get prepared when I get back home to the drums lol. My next question would be if I plug headphones in the Mac, am I hearing the interface and the DAW or just the DAW
At around 5:15 in this video you talk about putting your in-ears into your laptop instead of the interface due to being able to mix live and hear what's happening in real time. I have the same interface and am new to recording. Is it not possible to mix live and hear what is happening through the interface with in-ears? Thanks!
Hi this was so helpful thank you! I’m helping my son record for drum covers. One question is when I put my headphone directly in my Mac Pro, I can’t here the beats from the interface? I can hear the ticking but not the mics? What am I doing wrong🤷♀️
i’m pretty sure it’s not something that you fix through garage band. I had the same problem a couple of months ago, and if I remember correctly, you just change the output in the sound settings on your mac, it’s nothing with GarageBand.
Hi Jackie, how do you output from your Mixer to the (Ipad, Mac Book, or Mac) ? If I have electronic drums (Alesis DM10) can I run a lead from the drum module direct into the Ipad?
Yes. For example my electronic kit just goes USBC straight to my MacBook. That will carry a midi signal though so keep that in mind. There are great TH-cam videos on this topic that will explain better than me! But also not sure about recording to an iPad. Never done it.
Great video and just what I was looking for. I’m using a focusrite and can’t get GarageBand to hear/record my iPhone plugged in the same way you did. Won’t seem to read it :/ Any tips on how you got that backing/play along track to work?
I’m having the same problem with the Tascam interface - the backing track/song that I’m playing from my phone (Spotify) sounds awful! Please let me know if you figured out how to fix it. Thx
For those doing it the easy way using edrums into GB ios like me, and using the module sounds instead of the GB kits (Yugh), if you're playing along to MIDI native GB instruments, you'll find that it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to have perfect timing through the whole song, so I literally play one bar perfectly and copy and paste that bar, the same goes for the rolls. Unfortunately, quantising is only available for the GB kits, hence the reason I do it like this.
dumb question time! I currently use PC and presonus, and this same Tascam. I record with people from all over. What they do is send me an audio track of their song, usually guitars/bass and then I add my drum part. I do this in Studio One by just adding a input track, and dragging/droppoing the WAV file they send me into it. Does it work the same way with garageband?
Hi Jackie, its about time someone put together a video like this! Nice job! Question for you: Can u recommend an interface that won't break the bank? For drums you probably need 6-8 good mic pre's, correct?
Question about condenser overhead microphones... I'm completely new to everything and I know the overheads are condenser mics. Can GarageBand send the power through my interface? I'm using a Behinger XR18 which have no buttons or sliders. So not sure how to send power so I can run my overheads
Yes you should be able to plug in the mics and then connect the mixer to your pc or Mac. Your nice don’t need power. The mixer does need power via usb to computer.
great video! do you know if it is possible to turn up and down some parts of the kit with garageband? (for example aplify the kick drum and low the cymbals?)
@@starchild692 it works ok. Ran the program but I couldn’t find a windows program I liked. I’m sure the are out there but I just decided to send it and buy the new M1 MacBook Air

Is having hearing the drums mixed in real time through the interface not possible? Or another way to ask.. what is the difference between running the in-ears through the laptop vs. the interface. Thanks much!
Yes you can do either or! If you go direct from the interface you will be hearing a raw mix. If you plug into the computer to use the built in output from GarageBand you’ll be hearing any effects added into GarageBand.
@@jackiecas1 Thanks so much! Awesome and helpful info. Couple more things.. 1) Your videos are clear, cohesive, and very helpful!
