And yes I'm aware about the original novel and it being set in a mythical version of central Europe, Mainly france but my point is based on the delightful Studio Ghibli adaptation... I am also aware that further explanation undermines my point but there is still a cannon on an archery based tech and this upsets me. Although I find peace in the fact that a dead players army is now hostile again, kind of.

I guess that during the developement process they just gave a task to an artist without much context, something like "draw a depiction of ballistics in late Middle Ages". Of course he or she drew a siege weapon firing on a castle. Because targeting even an immovable object on a large distance with a siege weapon wasn't an easy task back then, and that's what ballistics was used for back then. When firing arrows on moving targets, people used skill and common sence. This tech is derived from the first part of the game, alongside with some others.

The icons thing has gotta be a case of the people who drew the pictures only having the name of the tech to base them on. You're making a historical game and someone says "draw me a picture for ballistics" so you draw a cannon. Someone says "draw me heated shot" so you draw a pile of heated shot even though you're using it for arrows (not sure if it affects bombard towers).
The left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, I believe is the correct idiom.
Oh and don't even get me started on "chemistry". I played a lot of Civ, needing chemistry for gunpowder made total sense, nothing else it does makes sense. We were setting things on fire a long time before we knew why they went on fire good.

The way upgrades work certainly took a while to get used to and caused some dissapointment for me. Like the TC getting extra attack from fletching, like the other defensiv buildings, but not gaining extra range. Yet the bombard tower range increases because of fletching, bodkin and bracer? It`s a canon ball while the TC actually uses arrows. I understand it somewhat from a balance perspective, but it is not intuitive. Also bombard towers benefiting from ballistics, when gun powder in general doesn't. Something's up with these canon balls...

    • @CptRyaffio
      @CptRyaffio ปีที่แล้ว +3

Did you know that that was based on a pun? Camels are often called "the ships of the desert" because of how they walk, moving both legs on each side forward together, unlike horses, who move the legs on opposite corners together. This gives them a very specific gait, which feels like being on a boat to the rider, swaying from side to side.
Also, horses are afraid of camels (because of the smell, apparently), which is why the camels units have a bonus against mounted units in game.

Heated Shot should only be a naval tech. If you're trying to be realistic.
Ships-of-the-line sometimes had a furnace in the ship to heat up cannonballs prior to loading them in a cannon. Yes you could do this in a castle during a siege but this almost never happened in historic land battles .
Also this was fun to watch and learn along. More little tid bits from t90 please !

The reason Heated Shot works like that in AoE2 is in AoE1 towers were severely underpowered against ships (whole navy was ridiculously overpowered in AoE1 anyway). So developers needed to give towers some edge in the sequel.

Okay, so, playing devil's advocate here, I think heated shot is a pretty reasonable tech; in terms of historical accuracy, at least, it's not far off. Heated shot refers to heating up cannonballs (things fired from a cannon were called shot, it wasn't used to refer to projectiles in general) before shooting them at boats to light the boats on fire, and it was fairly common in naval warfare during the Age of Sail. The image is also of red-hot cannonballs, so it makes sense to me that it works on ships.
Now, most Age players aren't nerds in the same way I am, so they obviously wouldn't know this, and I can definitely see why it would be VERY confusing for people who don't know that kind of thing. However, I don't think it's necessarily a bad decision, since it IS more historically accurate in its effect than most Age techs (though for maximum accuracy it would also work on BBCs and cannon galleons). I'm not really sure what they could do to make a tech based off of the historical thing that was called "heated shot" more intuitive for people who don't read the description.

Ballistics -> Male units have bigger balls (fearless in battle)
Herbal Medicine -> HER balls grow (the female villager / gbeto are fearless in fight and have lower voice)
Chemistry - Your units get along, they argue less with each other
Logistica -> Your units make more logical arguments
Spies -> The food you gather becomes more spicy (makes for tougher warriors obviously)
Arquebus -> Creates somekind of a weird car that is arquably a bus
Redemption -> Your units become RDR2 characters
Blast Furnace -> This will absolutely blast your furnace off the map (good if you hate furnaces)
Keep -> Click on it if you want to keep upgrading

  • @Real_MisterSir
    @Real_MisterSir ปีที่แล้ว +1

*"Logistica" has got to be on a list like this.*
First of all, it has nothing to do with logistics, so already the name is misleading. Then when you read the description, it says the UU does "trample damage" - but the effect has nothing to do with trampling enemies. It also doesn't explain how it also adds a hidden +6dmg bonus specifically towards infantry. Why just infantry? Why not archers and villagers too? And how does damage to adjacent units result from trample? Trample means running over the person who is in your way, not the people on the side/behind you.. There is literally nothing about this tech, it's naming, nor its effect, that makes sense. And to date I'd wager it's one of the most misunderstood techs in the game by new players, as it's literally impossible to decode what it does without looking it up on the internet.

Heated shot is even worse than that, because the icon is a bunch of heated cannonballs that look exactly like the heated cannonballs that mangonels/trebuchets shoot after they get chemistry. In C&C Generals, when you click on a unit, the UI in the bottom right shows all the upgrades that are available for that unit, with it being slightly darkened or greyed out if it has not been researched yet. Implementing such a thing in AoE2 would make it easier to see which upgrades can be applied to your units, as well as the bonus of making it easier for casters etc to tell what hidden upgrades a unit has. I know for me it is one of the biggest, if not the only, QoL features I am missing in AoE2 compared to the one other RTS game I've played a lot of.

I didn't run in any of the traps described here. BUT: I started playing when AoK came out. With nonexistent internet that meant only playing vs. AI, allowing me to press pause and take my time to read each and every description before clicking. I can easily see players who jump immediately into multiplayer get all of these wrong.
And even with reading everything it was not all immediately clear to me. Thumb Ring stated that your archers don't miss. I did not understand that this meant stationary targets only. I never researched ballistics to aid my archers, only for turrets, ships etc. And that sh*t with conqs needing archer armor was only an educated guess on my part and watching the numbers before and after research. Nobody got time for that in multiplayer.
I even researched heated shot once to get flaming arrows, despite reading the description and knowing it didn't improve my archers. But I still thought it was the tech for making that grafics change and I wanted my archers to be cooler. Chemistry was queued after that but still ...
And getting to DE I was looking for the fireship upgrade, not knowing they put all 3 upgrades in one tech. Therefore I believed for a moment, that my civ didn't get the upgrade. Double checked the tech tree and found out then. Again: Ain't nobody got time for that in ranked!

Have the updated icons on by default for new folks, but give an option to switch back if you're used to it. Oh, and rename "War Galley" to something like "War Ships", something, anything to make it more clear.
At this point it's muscle memory and consuming a bunch of AoE2 content that keeps me from researching the wrong stuff, but starting out it's a pain. The game can get stressful enough without confusing techs lol.

    Reading bad?
Units have a list of upgrades that affects them that shows up when you hover over them in the building, and it even lists which building is the Said upgrades are.
The upgrades also show a summary of the effect they grant at the end of their tool tip.
I know during competitive games you don't have the luxury to stop and read, but ffs, you can train yourself in the single player mode or the campaign. Then you just need to memorize the upgrade patterns
(Saying me who played RoR far more then rise of kings, and RoR didn't have these fancy tech trees or unit upgrades list)
