  • Installing a ball valve to your kettle and hot liquor tank will make a huge difference in your brew day. A weldless bulkhead makes it a project you can do in less than an hour.
You'll notice a difference the first time you use your kettle with the new valve, and you’ll start planning how to add one to all of your brew gear.
Installing a weldless bulkhead is not a complex process. It does require some special equipment, but if you already have a drill, everything else is linked below. In my instructions, they say you can create a 13/16” or 7/8” hole. I went for 13/16” so everything would fit a little bit tighter.
Be safe! Don’t operate power tools while under the influence. Make sure you wear eye protection and hearing protection.
The ball valve I selected was what I felt met the needs for a hot liquor tank. There isn’t anywhere to attach devices inside the kettle since there won’t be anything to filter out. Below, there is a link to a bulkhead with a coupler for adding screens, tubes, inside the kettle.
Plan out the placement for the ball valve to meet your needs. After I shot this video, I used the kettle for #LearnToHomebrewDay and love having the valve underneath the handle.

I would recommend this option to add screens, etc inside the kettle:

Rad How To vid. This is really good info for people. Adding a valve seems like it would be way harder than it really needs to be. When I finally get around to ordering one, I'll refer back to this for sure! Cheers, Jake! Hope to see you soon!

+Josh Secaur Thanks, man. Yeah, like a lot of things with homebrewing, the actual steps to get it done aren't as intimidating or complex as they seem when you first think about doing them. I wish I had thought of Pooka's tip to use the bit to clean the inside edges, too.

Nice How to Video Man. A tip on saving a bit of filing and/or sanding, drill the hole with the step bit from the outside in until you're down to the last step or so, then if Your drill will fit inside the kettle, drill the last step or two from the inside out and that will help reduce the amount of jagged metal you'll need to clean up. Cheers Jake!

+Pooka NC That's a great tip! I'll keep that in mind for my next addition, which may be a while since I feel like I'm set up pretty good for the moment. Although, drooling over a friend's electric system may give cause for an upgrade.

Is there ever a problem with those plastic washers melting when doing your boil on a propane burner? I'd like to do this, but I don't wanna end up screwing up a $90 pot.

+spiff2268 There aren't any plastic washers. They're both high-temp silicone. I had a bigger problem on a friends burner where some of the flames jumped up and melted the rubber on the handle of the ball valve. I haven't had any problems. This kettle, I've used the ball valve for six batches with no problems.
Be careful when you're drilling the hole.

Cool. Did the silicone washers come with the ball valve, or were they sold separately?

+spiff2268 the kit in the link in the comments/description came with everything.

+timsea81 I'll keep that in mind on future videos. Thank you. I didn't think it was that loud, so I appreciate the feedback.

Turn your volume up or open your ears, I had no problem hearing the guys voice.

I hear him loud and clear listening on double speed

Most is fine but parts where the voice is quieter it's difficult. The background music is unnecessarily loud and distracting though.
