This is my own experience with box dye from the drugstore; When I used Garnier Olia my hair was so soft and not dry at all after chemically processing it. When I tried Schwarzkopf Ultime (had high hopes with this one since it has its own line used by professional hairdressers in the salon) my hair was left feeling really dry and I was surprised. I hope this helps someone who is having trouble deciding between the two.
@@JoJo-xz6fw I‘m going to color my hair for the first time by myself tomorrow with this exact red color by olia, so now I‘m feeling even better knowing that it‘s a good one😁
I can tell you, the Olia definitely lasts. I am fully gray in the front of my hair, and I've been using it for YEARS. No fading whatsoever. My hair is almost waist length and is not damaged. (Also, I went to cosmetology school).
I use L’Oréal box dye and have had hairdressers ask me who colors my hair. I’ve even had two ask if it was my natural color. 👍 Go figure! Thanks for the testing!
I used to get the same reaction when I used the L'Oréal casting creme gloss, which is an ammonia free, semi permanent colour. My hair was alway in amazing condition. Then I chose the life of bleach 😭
I used Clairol Nice N’ Easy 103A Medium Beige Blonde for years and loved it. Then, they changed the formula and the color was Too Drab and looked muddy grey.
Loved this video!! I think it’s important for those that can’t afford to get colour done at a professional salon to have really good information!! Great job
@@GlamGirlGabi It's not as much a stigma as a real life situation when/if they want to go lighter, and getting it out. They can create a really horrid color correction situation. I know, if you're a professional, that you know this.
Every time a hair dresser uses box dye they’re shocked. Well, it’s all of what some people use. I don’t have money to be going to a salon and actually nor do I want to. I love doing my own hair. Thank you for being Honest ! And rating the box dyes fair. I’d say I’d love to use any of the box dyes. They all did great. I’ve used Garnier before in medium brown and love it.
If you don't mind investing in the peroxide/developer and the color formulas from Goldwell or Wella/otherwise, then it is about as expensive as buying box color. I am a stylist who has created box color lines and professional ranges and I would find it so funny if people starting using pro products because everyone in beauty is AlwAys So ShoCKed over box color.
@@larsonanne you buy normal developer from a store make sure it’s not 30/40 vol you need lower then you can buy professional hair dyes online which normally range in price like normal box dyes after that you mix them together and use on ur hair like a box dye
I always paid 100’s of dollars while a friend always used boxed. She always looked great but I was afraid to do it myself. Now I’m in Europe & often not near a salon. I’m using boxed & it’s awesome! Wish I’d figured this out thousands of dollars ago 😊
I wish this video was out a few months ago when I spent almost $300 total with a stylist in 2 attempts to get my hair red from medium brown. She lifted the color for the red to take. Each time the red washed out on the 1st wash. I went back after I told her it washed out and spent more $ to try again. After my failed attempts my daughter dyed her own hair with a red box dye and it looked AMAZING. I don't mind spending $ for great results but I felt like a sucker after literally throwing $ down the drain. This was an amazing video. Maybe I'll give it another shot on my own. Thank you!!!
I've also had a traumatic color experience with an incompetent hairdresser, I just don't understand how this can happen. They are out there and give hairdressing a bad name. You would think a medium brown to a red color is a common request and easily doable.
I spent way too much money at a salon asking for a burgundy color melt/root tap. She gave me fire engine red. 🚒 Super thankful it washed out in two washes. It was so ugly, and I would have been so mad if it was the color I wanted and washed out that fast with $$$ color safe shampoo.
If your hair is bleached and light. Dye your hair a light brown with box dye. Probably just a old school regular Light brown , not Ash , and then dye your hair a red brown like an auburn 2 weeks later (because you want to let your hair rest) and I guarantee it’ll look bomb on you. If she bleached your hair and then you do red with no base it’ll just keep on washing out too much. That’s my opinion! I have had dark red before from box dye. I’m not a hair dresser! Take advice at your own risk but also know that red takes Months to get out of hair if you use box dye and want to switch to a brown. It’ll take probably 6 months to a year with dying your hair every 3 months if you wanna go brown from red. Just FYI cuz I had to do that to go back to my medium brown from auburn. If your hair is now a medium brown from her lightning your hair before , just pick up a red shade from the box dyes and it’ll look good. If you get hot roots and don’t want them and need to fix them. Dye roots one shade darker than the mid and ends and you’ll be good.
If your hair was dyed before she had to bleach it. Unlike your daughter whose hair is probably less damaged and therefore takes the color better. ALL redheads will tell you that shampoo takes out the red horribly. It talks more of the porosity of the hair and damage and less of the color. Red head shampoo and conditioner plus upkeep with demipermanent hair dye or direct hair dye are needed keeping red hair red is hard... harder than blonde ill say
I have used Feria by L’Oréal and I can’t tell you how much compliments I have received from hairdressers and people on the street. It leaves my hair with a beautiful champagne blonde , not brassy at all and it covers all my white hair. I have used it for years with the same results. I use #91 which it’s Champagne blonde, and it originally is blond with a bit of very saddle beige tone and after a couple of washes it’s just a beautiful blonde. I apply it every two months because it has highlights it gives the impression of having intentional highlights. Just beautiful.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Box Color is NOT terrible but you need to have the RIGHT expectations. 1) If your hair is not already dyed and you stay within 2 Levels of your natural color you can get Good Results. 2) If your hair has been chemically processed ( Color, Bleach, Perm, Relaxed ) you need to do a STRAND TEST before proceeding. AMMONIA - FREE Color uses ETHANOLAMINE instead which is less odor. OIL BASED Color uses an Oil Base to better preserve the hair’s natural Lipid Layer so it is better conditioned and because the Dye Stuffs used dissolve in OIL better than water you can get a better color result with LESS FADING from exposure to water. FÉRIA is a TRANSPARENT, Permanent Color that uses a PURE DYE that works WITH the existing shade - Example: a BLUE BLACK shade would use a Transparent “No Base” color of Deep Blue to Add a Blue Tone to Dark Brown or Black hair, if used on a lighter shade the result would be very Bluish or Greenish
@@rain3743 Removing color or correcting a bad color is possible but most people do it all wrong by using Powder Bleach and 30 or 40 vol.Developer / Peroxide. You should use a color remover made for the type of Dye used and recondition hair throughly before Re-Coloring.
I really liked Revlon Colorsilk. I learned not to overlap the dye as it gets darker with each application. I used level 5 on my natural level 8. It looked great. Unfortunately the ethanalomine hurt my skin over time, not good for people with skin sensitivities: eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis...
@@brightphoebesays I’m sorry to hear that, most colors that use peroxide can cause skin irritation even on normal skin. However, if you are going darker or just covering gray there are new plant based colors that don’t use peroxide or synthetic colorants and can be much safer for people with skin problems and still give beautiful, long - lasting results.
thank you for the honest review! I think box dye has come a long way. I have used it in the past and sometimes had even better results than in a salon. That said...I now prefer professional color because I want to be able to chose and mix it individually for my hair. I use ammonia-free toner with 10 vol. developer because that's more than enough to cover-up my greys (I have very fine hair) with the least amount of damage. Also, imo box dye looks great after first use- but over time, even if you only touch-up your roots and just refresh the length for a few minutes...it will damage and dry out the hair. The developer is too strong to constantly overlap the already colored length.
I used to use Olia hair dye because I had difficulty breathing and my eyes hurt when using dyes that contained ammonia, whether it was a box dye or a professional one in a salon. It has nothing to do with 'damage' to the hair. I didn't even know that was the reason Olia didn't have ammonia - I thought that it was for sensitive people like me. I used to find that my hair was in good condition after using it and the colour was good with different tones and shine. However, I had a bad reaction to a "sensitive" hair dye in a salon and the stylist had to quickly wash the colour out. I had been fine with the patch test a few days earlier, yet it hadn't been on long before I started to feel dizzy and sick. Months later, I did a test patch of Olia which I'd found to be gentle before, but I started to feel woozy and I had a strange pain/altered sensation radiating from the swatch on my arm. I washed it thoroughly, by which time the pain had already reached my neck. I looked up my symptoms and it was a systemic reaction, so I would've been at a high risk of going into anaphylactic shock if I'd actually applied the dye to my head. Antihistamines sorted me out, but I'd advise anyone else who has any reaction to go straight to their A&E or ER. It can be life threatening. So, now I have to use natural henna and indigo. I get pretty good results, but it isn't as quick or easy to use as Olia. On the plus side, there are no dangerous chemicals and my hair is in fabulous condition :)
Btw, my hairdresser asked me about my hair because she loved the colour and was surprised at how healthy it is. She told me that they use henna at their salon, when I told her that I'm never sure if I'm applying it correctly at the back of my head. Yet when I asked to see the product I found that it contained chemicals as well. I couldn't risk that. I would advise anyone to avoid henna that's mixed with chemicals; if it's mixed with salts it can cause major damage to your hair if you use anything else on your hair that it reacts with. The natural stuff is a bit messy and you might need a little practice, but it's much safer. I'd read up on it and watch how other people use it on TH-cam, if you're interested.
ALL PERMANENT HAIR COLORS DAMAGE THE HAIR to some degree, even the ones for professionals. It is how you apply it and how often you use it that makes the most difference. They try to tell you that Drugstore Box Dye is more damaging but they have to formulate it to be used by amateurs. Also, it doesn’t Lighten or Color as well as the Professional Dyes - How can this make sense? The MAJOR DIFFERENCE between Box Dye and Professional Dye is EDUCATION. A professional colorist is supposed to know how to formulate and apply Bleach and Color Correctly for each individual client. Professional Dyes also have a greater range of shades, up to HUNDREDS of colors, as well as Additives, Developers, Modifiers Etc. However, all the professional brands use the same basic Dyestuffs as the drugstore brands with a few exceptions as there are only a certain number of Dye Compounds available for use on Hair. Most Drugstore Dyes are actually OWNED by many of the same parent companies of the Professional Brands so they can’t really be all that different just marketed differently.
I am not a stylist but have opened my stubborn grey roots prior to box coloring w 20 Volume Developer. Wipe off w a wet wipe or wash cloth. Dry. Then color as normal.
Hi Gabi, great tips and advice. I've been dying my hair for years and have never gone to a hair salon to do it. 1, because they're expensive, 2, they take too long so they can justify the price, and 3, I can do it myself at home! If I colour my hair today, it'll last for at least 3 months and when my greys are starting to show I'll wear a headwrap and give my hair a rest for about another 2-3 months. My hair is in great condition. I've got a friend who swears by getting her hair 'professionally' done at the salon and what's funny is, her colour comes out the same way as mine....no difference! She's paying a lot for them to sit her in a salon chair, offer her a drink, and then colour and wash then style 😂😂. Box dyes for me are brilliant. I've made the odd mistake now and then over the years where I've gone for a lighter shade thinking it'll cover the grey but it's done nothing. Now I've realised I need to use a darker colour (dark brown) so everything is covered. But box dyes for me are the way to go! Thanks for sharing ❤
I’m younger so I don’t need to cover grays much but I use dark on the roots and shade lighter on the length. Color comes out bomb. Better than any salon could do and I also don’t go to a salon. Completely over priced like you said !
Hi, i want to try box dye bcoz i have premature grey hair and want to cover them But im afraid that the hair that arent grey yet would turn grey coz of dye Also which brand is best for natural red or brown colour
@@smritinarang5928hi, if your experiencing slight greys I'd leave them alone unless they are visible and are bothering you. Colouring hair that is already grey isn't going to affect the hair that isn't grey it's just going to blend into the hair. There's not really a specific dye that I go to I tend to try different ones. But there's one dye that I do keep going back to but unfortunately can't remember the name of it, all I can say is it's a natural dye in a green-ish box! I think it's plant based and has very good natural ingredients in it. Sorry I don't know the name of it 😩 I'll look for it the next time I go to the store but if you manage to figure out which one I'm talking about please let me know!! Hope this was somewhat helpful, hope you have a lovely day wherever you are ❤🇬🇧
I have been using olia for the past 10 years .....I absolutely love it....2 months ago I tried madison reed...not impressed...just dyed my hair 3 days ago and with olia and it looks so healthy...shiny, smooth....I have very long dry hair so olia is perfect for me
I buy my own developer & color from Sally's Beauty. I find that it's less harsh on my hair. And really no more costly than the box dies. I have thin hair that tends to go brassy especially if I color it too often or use a strong developer. I now use a low 10 developer for sensitive scalp and I mix it one part to one part with a demi color and gloss. It's took over a year of trying different color mixtures to get it to that perfect color. Also by adding the gloss it makes my hair shinier and a more translucent, which blends nicely with grow out gray. And no more brassiness.
I just want to say there is a whole world of box dye you can buy online as well not just at the drugstore and some of those are just BOMB. I am a person who has used the “Real” hair dresser dye from Sally Beauty because of Brad Mondo always preaching about actually doing hair “properly “ and honestly it doesn’t compare to Box dye. Box dye cones of so much more shiny, dimensional color and lasts! I am back on box dye after using Demi hair dye from Sally Beauty per Brads advice. Nope , I’m glad you’re testing out the box dye world.
Thank you for the visual comparison and honest evaluation. I love having my hair done, but can't really afford it. I'm 63 and my grey is ever increasing but I won't go quietly. I will go to the grave kicking and screaming. Thanks again for helping me make a more informed choice.
This is great! I’ve been coloring and highlighting my own hair for 40 years. I can afford to pay a stylist, I just hate roots, like the control, and hate the cost of a colorist…for me. I’ve gone through periods of using a colorist, but always go back to doing my own. I don’t understand why most people choose not to read instructions, then complain it was awful for their hair. I love that you placed so much stock in reading the manufacturer’s directions..so important. Thanks for the great tips!
Gabi I agree with you that not all professional hair colour brands have vibrand reds.Lativel is a brand that my hair dresser uses and the colours are really natural, all of the reds and L'Oreal Majirel, they have 0 reds like woah, but they have TONS of blonde tones which I love.I live in Greece and box dyes are 1/3 of the price of what you got them, but then again,i order my hair dyes online, they cost the same as the box hair dyes tbh.Box hair dyes contain max 155ml of total product (with the developer) and they can cost up to 15 bucks and the better option here is to get individual tubes of professional hair colour, they cost 6-8 bucks the 100ml and the developer for 1 use costs a few cents. If people have a cosmetic store near them that sells hair dyes, they could do some eye shopping and compare prices.Right now though,I bleach my hair using the wella bleach and i dye my hair purple with the brand directions.Anyway, great video, keep it up,you just got a new subscriber ♥
Just an FYI:There are pro color that have a different analine derivative fron ammonia, that use an oil delivery system, which pushes molecules into the cortex, vs. Lifting the cuticle, and it's incredibly fortifying, as it delivers proteins , as well and covers even resistant grays. Redken Chromatics. They also make a 10NN.
I’ve used Garnier Olia several times. Each time I was disappointed. Love the smell since you don’t get the harsh chemical smell. It does leave your hair soft. BUT the color longevity is crap.
Even professional lightener will require the hair to be toned afterwards. I'm not a hairstylist so maybe there is a magic toning bleach out there but I don't see how the color wouldn't be lifted by the bleach as soon as it gets deposited into the hair.
I'm no hairstylist but my mom is .. so I live in Germany and I can say Box Dye can be good as well! So yes go for IT! ✌🏼 L'Oréal , Schwarzkopf and Garnier are Brands that work so good. The Thing is to bleach hair wirh Box Dye Bleach this is really complicated.
Thank you for testing these store box dyes. I'm getting ready to dye my hair for the first time as I have some gray right at my hairline only about 10% of my hair. I'd like to stay close to my natural color which is medium to medium dark brown. I would love you to see you do the same test with natural brown shades.
I like people like you who can go in with an open mind. I appreciate videos like this that include clear information too. I find for me even in brands they can vary. Like with me I find if I wanna pull red, go Garnier. I forget the specific one I used, Naturals? It always pulls more vibrancy (brighter red) from my natural red. Whereas if I wanna pull more chocolate/natural tone-ish, I grab for L'oreal Preference. Over time even inside each brand one learns how each can vary, lol. My go to has always been L'oreal Preference. Leaves my hair in better shape, and the colors give me a better result.
I’ve let my natural hair color grow out but I colored my hair copper red for years with L’Oréal and used to get many compliments. It’s a pain though, it fades fast and needs to be dyed often.
I've had my medium brown hair dyed in the salon copper-red now for about a year- but can no longer afford - especially with white/gray roots coming in -- trying to find a box red copper, but not even sure yet how/what to do with the white roots ...
This video was in my recommendations so I decided to check it out. Your personality is so upbeat and nice. I learned a lot and I totally just subscribed to you. I can't wait to watch more of your videos
I had to laugh...my husband just colored my hair this afternoon. I've used the Schwartzgraph (5.29 Vintage Red) for years now. Hands down, the BEST lasting red I've ever used. Color lasts perfectly 6+ weeks which is amazing for fade prone reds. I get tons of compliments on the color. My only gripe is the fact that Walmart seems to have pulled the brand (or at least my color) and I have to mail order from Rite Aid. Love, love, love it.
First off, how lovely that your husband colors your hair! "Schwartzgraph" made me laugh tough. You probably meant Schwarzkopf 😂 I'm aware it's an insane looking word to non German speakers. Schwarz=black Kopf=head. It literally translates to blackhead 😂😂 😂
I have an allergy to ammonia, so can't use permanent color (MAkes my hair fall out!) I use Olia occasionally and it is very easy to use. My hair has to be super clean or it ends up very greasy. It lasts about 3 weeks. I'm 56 and am approx 80 % gray. Olia covers it which Clairol Natural Instincts Ammonia free formula does not. I think it's all around a decent non Ammonia color. My hair is naturally medium to dark brown, but I use light brown because my hair tends to draw in the darkness. Medium brown looks dark brown on me and dark brown looks black.
I have use the Garnier Olia in darkest brown, my hair is the darkest brown shade and many people call my hair color black. I color my roots and I get a red tint in my hair ; which I don’t want. The Schwarzkopf made my scalp blue! I just want a natural color that doesn’t give me red tones and covers my gray!
This isn't from experience, but it's what a few people who have worked in cosmetology have told me. Everyone's hair has natural red undertones. The chemicals bring that out. Some dyes have a green or blue pigment to offset the red. Madison Reed has a line that's specifically for covering gray and has natural ingredients. It works really well but it doesn't last as long as the others.
I would love to see you use box dye to tackle grey roots as I've discovered the box dye does "take" differently on the grey roots (ie what is needed to treat the grey/white roots in order for it to match the rest of the hair). I have natural medium blonde hair with highlights and no matter what level of box dye blonde, my white/grey roots always come in like a dark root smudge...thankfully that is kinda fashionable at the moment lol.
Love that she tested it and showed each one in comparison! Although I do wish she could have held the swatches in front of a window or in the light because it’s so hard to see the color in indoor lighting
I have very dry fine but thick wavy hair that gets so tangled even on its good day. I have used all of these, usually a blonde shade. #8. - #9. I found the Schwarzkoph absolutely AWFUL, for my hair. Once rinsed out, it became sooo tangled and felt so much more dry it litterly scared me. I only used it the one time. Hated it.. I have used Loreal Feria a number of times. I find after rinsing it feels a little dry and a little more tangled then my hair would be after a hair wash. I always loved how the colour turned out. But most surprising to me was trying out the garnier OLIA. WOW, Totally shocking results I kid you not, after rinsing my hair felt healthier less dry and less tangled. Then to top it off the color lifted and was a beautiful shade. I didn't think it would lift but all honesty it lifted the best of all 3.The shade of was beautiful shiny. I was shocked, walking past this hair dye for years and never even considered trying it because it was cheaper then the rest of them and just assuming that Loreal is the best drug store brand of hair dye. The reason I choose to try it the first time was because as I get older my hair is becoming more sensitive and because it does not use ammonia it would not be so hard on my hair. With that in mind, I thought for sure I would not get much of a lift but I was ok with that to keep my hair little bit healthier. But it absolutely turned out beautifully. Lifted no problem, beautiful colour, felt healthy, looked healthy and shiny. Shocked. Its the only drug store hair dye product I use now. Sorry for all the babbling.
I loved this video, your honesty, and your knowledge! You were also really great at explaining and educating us as you went along. If you don't teach yet... you should really look into it. I for one could listen and learn from you.
In my days prior to having grey hair 😢 L’Oréal HiLift Feria brand was my go brand for my dark brown hair. Now that I have so much grey, there are so many box brands full of BS!!! The last decade, I’ve predominantly used the cheap $3 Revlon Colorsilk that I can buy at Walmart or Amazon. I have long waist length hair …but I mainly dye the roots and then pull the color towards the ends. Basically only about 6” of my hair gets colored with 1 box. This cheapie box dye makes my grays look highlighted too. Also I can pick from a variety of brown colors (whatever’s cheaper/on sale at Amazon) and all the colors blend nicely. I always get so many compliments on my hair.❤
Thank you so much for being so educational, helpful, informative - and sympathetic to all of us who, for whatever reason, can not use professional hairdresser services. That's so kind of you - much appreciated! You're lovely. Beautiful inside out, kind and caring human being.
The Original Haircolor formula(s) were based on OIL (usually, Tall Oil Acid or Oleic Acid) Miss Clairol Creme Formula, Miss Roux, Rayette and all of the Liquid Professional Color used OIL as the BASE and Carrier of the dyes. This is why you had to shampoo the hair after rinsing the color to remove excess oil from the product even the “Shampoo-In” type colors needed to be shampooed because they were Oil Shampoo Tints meaning the product used a sulfonated oil as the base which allowed the shampoo-in application. More modern colors use Dyes that are more water soluble to skip the shampoo step and allow a Creme or Treatment type conditioner to be used right after but these are not as water resistant as the old Oil Based colors they are just easier to rinse out.
I used to use.. blue-black box dye...for 17 years, but black uses low volume 20volume max. For red...I only use profesional..because I do not need high volume, 20volume max(for my natural) and most reds have 30 ...some even more. Lots of people that uses box red for a long time, their hair is fried. I use my red or more than an 1 year, hear is shiny and soft..but I mix my own color with developer 10-20volume. I do not mind ammonia colors, have greys...and those cover my greys.
I use instant coffee, coconut oil, and yogurt a few times a week. While it's not anything boxed, and not long lasting, There's no freaking chemicals at all. My hair is naturally reddish, and that's exactly what it does, and I can mix it up in my own kitchen.
I finally found the NO B.S. (general) hair expert to go with my no B.S. CURLY hair expert (Mell, of Manes By Mell)! I love this video so much and I adore how STRAIGHTFORWARD you are!!! Thank you for being this way!!! You’re awesome. 🤗
Great video! I would LOVE a video just like this one but with black/blue black colour. I think us looking for a perfect black always get like underestimated. Again, awesome video!
Yes all 3 of the over the counter colors were beautiful but one test must be added.. How long do these colors stay in the stay, one week, two weeks and if it stays in the hair after 3 then there would be winner. Sometimes these colors are so beautiful and but then after 3 washings most of the color goes down the drain. Is wearability where Goldwell wins out?
I was using Garnier Olia Light Auburn for a few years and it was, for me, the best boxed hair color I've used. However, stores stopped selling the color. I went to Amazon to order a few boxes, but they turned my hair clown orange ! Obviously, the seller was sketchy and had old product or it was substituted with something else. I used Schwarzkopf a couple of times, in the Caramel Blonde (even though I'm a red gal), and thought the results were very good. However, Schwarzkopf only has the burgundy type reds and I want the other color red, e.g., light to medium auburn, without the purple or burgundy hues. Wish they offered it my color. Your videos are super -- thank you !
L'Oréal creme gloss have a semi permanent, ammonia free hair dye called Amber which is on the lighter side, and L'Oréal also have a bit of a darker shade in a permanent dye from the Excellence creme range called Natural rich auburn. Both are great, the gloss leaves the hair in fantastic condition. I'm not sure what the Garnier colour looked like but perhaps they might be similar
Yes, sounds like you and I are going for the same color. I don't want any purple, at all, under my red. But I also don't want the RED red. My first attempt, she gave me candy-apple red. Not what I asked for. It's a cute fashion color, but not for me. Then there was the three-layer cake salon. Every person who received color got the same pattern. Medium on top, lighter in the middle, and darker on bottom (I'm speaking of the scalp), and then a "tail" of dark from the crown falling down the back. Next place had reasonably good color, but when I asked for a trim of my long hair, her "trim" consisted of combing my hair down, holding it against my back, and cutting straight across the bottom. That'll be 90 bucks! I could have gotten that at Supercuts for $12. Fourth colorist was, I think, not stable. She gave reasonable color, but she kept disappearing for 30-40 minutes at a time. I'd come in first customer of the day, she'd seat me at her station then disappear for 40 minutes. She'd go to mix color and come back 30 minutes later. She'd rinse my hair and disappear for another 40. A simple root job took over four hours -- I had an 8 a.m. appointment and was there on time, as was she, but I was late for a 12:30 lunch date because I couldn't get out of there. Then the last one: Every time I went in, I'd end up with a different color, and none of them were the color I asked for. And she would sometimes forget to color my bangs (!). So one time, she had to correct the bangs, and the color came out exactly like I'd been wanting the whole time. So I made an appointment to get that exact shade all over. But she gave me something several shades browner. Done and done. With all of them. As long as I live in this metropolitan area (it's not a small town -- there's over 4 million people), I will do my own hair.
I used L’Oréal Féria for years had so many compliments. Changed because hair stylist said it’s not good for hair . And I have never found the shine and color it gave me think I’ll go back to it .. it’s so expensive at salon that I been doing and doesn’t look as shiny and color to dark .
I loved this video! I’ve referred a couple of people to it to help them decide what red box dye to go with. I would totally love it if you could do a video on how to do your own highlights at home on dark hair. Like the ones you have in your hair.
@@Chorkymom Are you a stylist? The ammonia free thing is the biggest load of marketing bullshit ever. I read on Amazon A TON of reviews about how it doesn't last long and I can almost guarantee it's because the agent that they use to replace ammonia isn't as effective (and probably not even less damaging). The colour results were pretty but I am not surprised that it washes out for you.
I have used both olia and Feria and I find olia is my favourite.. my hair just feels the best after I use it ! And I find colour wise they both look great but olia my hair just feels so good
I hope u read this i've been coloring my hair for 4 years now and the last year I've been struggling with a bad itch in the scalp I have no dandruff I have nothing in my hair but just an itch and it's really bad when I get sweaty so they told me that I should use hair dye with no ammonia in it and it could help. I think I should say that I'm using a sulfate free shampoo
What an awesome presentation! So direct, smart and sassy and totally credible. I just spent huge $$$ and realized I can't spend that much every ten weeks. Plus I wasn't 100% pleased but did get compliments, which helped. Thanks for sharing your scientific yet so engaging and fun knowledge.
My hair is down to my waist, so when I get it colored to cover my gray hairs and cut, it's well over $200. That's just not in my budget. How many boxes should I use? It used to be really thick, but age and stress have made my hair pretty thin.
I had to go back to box dye after a professional I went to for highlights did exactly what I told her I didn’t want. It is really hard to keep color on bleached hair, so she made a lot of work for me. I have been using Olia medium brown or dark golden brown, but this time I also got dark brown to mix with medium brown but I’ve never tried mixing colors before.
Now you understand our problem. We get great/good results with our color products. For us on a budget its hard to justify the expense. I wish i could let someone color my hair. Of course we need education on how to not overkill our hair. And possibly how to correct tones. That comes by trial and error for some of us. I will say I have done alot of research over the years and have gotten much better and less impulsive when making box dye decisions. I use sallys products when I can but nothing beats the vibrancy of box dye from the local retailer!
You cracked me up several times, thank you. I loved your brutal honesty and “no bullshit” approach it was funny and refreshing…as well as informative 😊🥂😎
I used Olia hair dye and I left it in my hair, quite literally, 3 minutes more than it states. I don't mess around with stated times when it comes to hair dye especially since I hadn't used hair dye that has oil (?!) in it....and it's my hair. I washed it out, it was an okay outcome but as I started to towel dry my hair I felt a weird spot at the back of my head....it was a bald spot! Too much product in that spot, a sensitive area, I have no idea?! Who knows but I will never use it again.* *I never heard back from Olia's (Garnier) company either.
Hi there. I’d love to know what to use to embrace my medium blonde hair that is gradually going grey. I don’t necessarily want to cover the grey, rather, I’d like to embrace it and blend my medium blonde to more grey or ash. So I’m reverse. I want to blend my length into my roots, rather than the other way around.
I am a natural red head but as I have gotten older it now has faded and looks like I have blonde high lights its gotten so white( not grey) I have never tried a box but getting to point I need it colored. What brand would be the best for me in red shades I could try? would these work for me?
Thing is that companies that make box color are BIG companies with loads of money. They spend on research and their product is pretty amazing. People will always want to go to salon services but it’s the experience they pay not the color, (unless they want highlights, or that kind of stuff) Single color is ABSOLUTELY ACHIEVABLE at home with box dye perfectly. My personal experience with Olia is 100/100. I never want to go to salon for color. Color fades after 10 weeks (approximately) regardless you pay $300 or $15.
This is what i've been searching for, for so long, so i don't screw up my hair colour, texture, scalp, etc;. I won't lie, i'm scared to use home based hair colours, as i don't know what to do, where to start, as i've always only ever had it done by the professionals. If i ever do it, it'll be a first for me. Why? Because i've done plenty of research & i've read, heard or seen the horror stories. This then confuses me & worries me further. lol Plus, as we ladies all know, there are COUNTLESS boxes/hair colours abound & not being a pro, which do i choose, so i don't end up looking like a freak/clown! Anyways, Thanks for sharing, bec this is really helping me to make better informed decisions. Please, please do more, more more of these videos, regarding more hair colours.
Oh my god, I love you. I am so glad I stumbled across this channel. You're beautiful, funny, honest...and literally made my day at 5 am this morning. thank you, for all that you do. 🥰
Thank you!!! I got the Garnier Olia and was about to dye my hair and thought of coming here to see if you had anything to say. So happy I found your video. I feel more confident using my box color now.
Did you do it?? Was it the same Color as the video shows? (Garnet red olia) if so please share your experience:)) my hair is really dark and I have recently dyed it but would like to dye it again because the colour did not show.
I love this video and I’ve watched it multiple times. However I was wondering if it could be possible to do an updated video about box dye and different methods of refreshing color with less damage from the drugstore. Since new products have come out since this video. Thanks!
Can you review Clairol Natural instincts. It is the one I use and love. I’m just curious to hear a profession’s thoughts. Also L’Oréal owns Garnier. That is probably why the look so much alike.
@@missjoasia123 I quit using it because when I went natural 15 years ago it didn’t work anymore. My hair was too coarse. So I went to permanent. Then I became sensitive/allergic to PPD, so I went to henna for years. That was fine until I got tired. This is when I found the reformulated Natural instincts without PPD, and it actually covers my grey!! However since I had such a big gap between using it I don’t have any direct comparisons to the old formula.
My hair is naturally black and I have dyed it with the garnier olia vivid garnet but it didn’t show through on my ends properly because my hair is thick and I only used one box. Do you think if I use two boxes of the deep garnet the colour will show through?
Thank you for this video!! I’ve used L’Oréal box dye before & my whole scalp started burning badly. I had to rinse it right out! Ever since then, I haven’t used L’Oréal. Has this happened to anyone else?
All permanent dyes burn, even professional. I have to use Demi with sensitive scalp 10V developer & stay in burgandy, browns & reds - Kenra or Joico Demis . Can't- will not bleach any more...😋
IF you're lifting up in the 9 or 10 range, you're blasting your hair and scalp witj probably doubke 40 volume developer, so yeah...it may burn. I charge $60 for a touch uo and do an "in between" service" that goes just around the face and on the part for my professional women who can't get a scheduked appt but need to look professional. They come in, I apply it. They wait and Inrinse and then go striaght home with damp hair.
I've probably used every box brand out there, never had anything burn. maybe you are allergic to something in it? if it's jus L'oreal, easy to avoid it. Do you do patch tests now?
I admit it's been a long time since I've used boxed dyes and maybe formulas have changed, but back when I dabbled, general wisdom was that a lot of box dyes contain metallic salts which can react badly with other chemicals. If you're not generally allergic to things, maybe this was a possibility.
I love this comparison and was also surprised at the results. I recently tried "Iroiro" (apparently pronounced "eero eero" according to their website) and loved the root coverage I got (even with some greying) as a touch-up between visits. I used a mixture of Neon Red with the 90 Red to cover root regrowth and boost vibrance on my bright red hair and I'm very pleased with the outcome. I wonder if you would do review of "Iroiro" colour, or a similar comparison with vegan hair dyes, please?
I don’t even want to remember my first experience with box dye, at home!!🙈🙈 it was horrible! I started having my hair dyed at a salon for many years then, one day I wanted to try doing it myself! I was horrified, couldn’t believe how much that dye dried my hair, and it said to have oils in it, and be very gentle to the hair. Also, the color was so far away from what I expected it to be, instead of a dark golden blonde I got red hair :)) I promised myself, never again! If I can afford going to a salon, that’s the only decent option out there, otherwise there’s no hair dyeing for me.
So just a question i havent even finished the video yet, but i always simply dye my hair darker, im naturally a blonde that faded to medium brown. With some golden and red undertones, and ive done pro amd box, i always tried to get it done if i could. But as someone who just goes dark brown everytime, thats all thats ever touched my hair, i try to do it as little as i can get away with. So every 4 months maybe, possibly doing anroot touch up. (Right now my hair is waaaaay grown out.) But is there a real difference in box dye, (only speaking on dark brown color) and going to like sallys and getting a 10 volume developer, and dark brown color? Or is it BASICALLY the same thing? I ask because i need to dye, been trying to learn and learn but havent gotten an answer to this.... I have 2 boxes of dye, and a root touch up ready to go. But ive recently been very into hair health sick of breakage etc. So i dont wanna use the box if going to Sallys and getting the developer/color is actually better for my hair. If you get to this comment id really appreciate it, but if not, I completely understand this video is like a year old or more, so i get it! Hahaha thank you for the video though very informative.
It would be interesting if you tried out the more affordable brands like Nice n Easy as well. In these times of high inflation not everyone can afford to spend 16 to 18 bucks on a box dye. Dollarama also sells brand name, box colouring , not expired for only 4 bucks.
I hope this helps someone who is having trouble deciding between the two.
thank you so much♡♡♡
I've used Olia for years and my hair is never dry. It's awesome. 🥰👌🏻
Agreed. I have used box dyes for many years. Schwarzkopf box dye was awful. Olia is my favorite!
@@JoJo-xz6fw I‘m going to color my hair for the first time by myself tomorrow with this exact red color by olia, so now I‘m feeling even better knowing that it‘s a good one😁
@@rosecanpunchmeandIwouldsaysorr come back and let us know what you think. 👌🏻
I can tell you, the Olia definitely lasts. I am fully gray in the front of my hair, and I've been using it for YEARS. No fading whatsoever. My hair is almost waist length and is not damaged. (Also, I went to cosmetology school).
For me Olia had zero coverage for grays around the hairline. Any tips? No box dyes covers my hairline.
It didn't fade or wash out from my ends even almost 3 years later. Olia lasts, and it leaves the hair smelling amazing, feeling soft.
I use L’Oréal box dye and have had hairdressers ask me who colors my hair. I’ve even had two ask if it was my natural color. 👍 Go figure! Thanks for the testing!
No matter what colour I used by L’Oréal it went black.
It depends what colour you use. Most blonde L’Oréal box dyes are rubbish - make your hair orange/yellow/purple/green/muddy/anything except blonde.
yeah loreal is great!
Loved this video!! I think it’s important for those that can’t afford to get colour done at a professional salon to have really good information!! Great job
I completely agree Sharon!! And without judgment too. I just hate the stigma that comes with it. That’s why I’m doing a whole series on box dye.
@@GlamGirlGabi It's not as much a stigma as a real life situation when/if they want to go lighter, and getting it out. They can create a really horrid color correction situation. I know, if you're a professional, that you know this.
@@GlamGirlGabi OMG, Thank you for that. Seriously.
@@rain3743 Not really lol
How bright would these work on virgin dark brown hair xx
@@ajnachakraguy Would you please expound on your comment? I really want to understand what you mean but can not follow it.
@missjoasia123 Hairdresser x30 years. If your red color is not holding, you need to add a color with a gold base. Gold anchors reds.
It's terrible ehen you have to loft ut out and want an even canvas. Yes, it's terrible.
@@rain3743 Removing color or correcting a bad color is possible but most people do it all wrong by using Powder Bleach and 30 or 40 vol.Developer / Peroxide. You should use a color remover made for the type of Dye used and recondition hair throughly before Re-Coloring.
Thank you for the information and clarification!
Sometimes it's hard to go to a professional, if someone has issues with pulling or thinning hair. Thank for posting this!
thank you for the honest review!
I've used Garnier Olia for years and absolutely love it it never dries out my hair like some of the other brands.
U should add another category for DAMAGE. I wanna know how much damage the box dyes do too
My hair is very delicate and it got better with the passing of time.
❤❤❤ THANK YOU for caring enough to make this video!
I'd like to see your view on best dyes for grey hair. I find the majority don't take well & the grey comes through
I am not a stylist but have opened my stubborn grey roots prior to box coloring w 20 Volume Developer.
@@missjoasia123 having greys is a pain in the butt 😫 ❤ have a lovely day where ever you are
Hi, i want to try box dye bcoz i have premature grey hair and want to cover them
But im afraid that the hair that arent grey yet would turn grey coz of dye
Also which brand is best for natural red or brown colour
Hope this was somewhat helpful, hope you have a lovely day wherever you are ❤🇬🇧
I have been using olia for the past 10 years .....I absolutely love it....2 months ago I tried madison reed...not impressed...just dyed my hair 3 days ago and with olia and it looks so healthy...shiny, smooth....I have very long dry hair so olia is perfect for me
I’ve heard GREAT THINGS ABOUT THE OLIA
I buy my own developer & color from Sally's Beauty. I find that it's less harsh on my hair. And really no more costly than the box dies. I have thin hair that tends to go brassy especially if I color it too often or use a strong developer.
I now use a low 10 developer for sensitive scalp and I mix it one part to one part with a demi color and gloss. It's took over a year of trying different color mixtures to get it to that perfect color. Also by adding the gloss it makes my hair shinier and a more translucent, which blends nicely with grow out gray. And no more brassiness.
This is useful information. Thank you for sharing.
@CarolLovesJesus
can you please explain the ratio of developer, gloss and demi color? I also want to color just roots.
Thank you!
Which one is your fav? Like what brand at the moment?
What are your favorites for jet black hair?
I've used the OLIA before and have been very pleased .Great gray coverage, too.
Please do this with blond box dyes. (I have level 6-7 natural hair and I wonder if there is any good box dye that won't make me orange or yellow...)
Even professional lightener will require the hair to be toned afterwards. I'm not a hairstylist so maybe there is a magic toning bleach out there but I don't see how the color wouldn't be lifted by the bleach as soon as it gets deposited into the hair.
Feria Ultra Light Neutral Blonde Shade 100 Diamond.
Great point about what is ammonia being replaced with? I always question those 'free of...' claims.

I also like that brand for the deep red or fuschia
@@RamoArt my hubby does mine toooooo!!!! Whoop whoop ❤️
Amazon carries it !!! I use it myself !!!
@@camlam5269 thank you!
What colour were you aiming for?
There are "root touch ups" which are great (from Clairol for example).
Me exactly 💯- Salon colored my natural med brown to a copper/red - can no longer afford- trying to figure out how to do white/gray roots!!
So happy you covered red dyes! I'd like to see how these fare after they're washed about 20 times, as red always seems to fade so quickly.
Love that she tested it and showed each one in comparison! Although I do wish she could have held the swatches in front of a window or in the light because it’s so hard to see the color in indoor lighting
Gurl that was so informative and interesting! I love to see a hairstylist give another perspective on at home coloring. Love it! Just subscribed 💖
I use garnier olia to dye my hair, smells good, doesn't burn and gives me a nice bright result
Were the extensions previously colored ? Just wondering on how these colors might look over colored hair vs virgin
I use instant coffee, coconut oil, and yogurt a few times a week. While it's not anything boxed, and not long lasting, There's no freaking chemicals at all. My hair is naturally reddish, and that's exactly what it does, and I can mix it up in my own kitchen.
How dou you use the coffee?
Im really loving the level 5 brown in Garnier Olia, even when it has fade out it still looks nice.
That’s a great suggestion! I’ll look into it for you!

@@x-starlight-x Thanks for the recommendations.
@@x-starlight-x Ooh- had to go look and see- that’s really close to my hair color. My mother named me well. 👩🏻🦰☺️
I've used Olia for years, I love it 🥰
I used L’Oréal Féria for years had so many compliments.
I love olia because it doesn’t damage my hair at all, and it’s ammonia free
Did you hear my entire ammonia free rant? Lol. 😂 It did provide nice results though….I must say I was impressed. Much more then I expected to be.
Lol! I was yelling this myself! How are ya supposed to get the color in without it!?? It doesn’t last long enough for me.
@@GlamGirlGabi olia lasts very long on my hair.
I have used both olia and Feria and I find olia is my favourite.. my hair just feels the best after I use it ! And I find colour wise they both look great but olia my hair just feels so good
Thanks for sharing!!
I am a red girl. Preference works but gets brassy fast. Also challenging to turn grey roots. I'm thinking of changing colors because red is hard.
Buy 4 boxes to be safe, but 3 should do the trick
Goldwell eleumen series is the one you want to use for vibrant red compared to tipchic or colorance.
Same here :) Funny, informative, and unpretentious. Enjoyable to watch.
Who knows but I will never use it again.*
*I never heard back from Olia's (Garnier) company either.
Would you be able to do purple colors?? Maybe not even true purples and more of a purple/red
Good question! I'd love to get some advice on this too.
I like how honest you were.
What was the original hair color? My hair is dark brown would I get the same results?
I love this video and I’ve watched it multiple times. However I was wondering if it could be possible to do an updated video about box dye and different methods of refreshing color with less damage from the drugstore. Since new products have come out since this video. Thanks!
Nice video I would have liked them all to be shampooed like 5 times to see if one washes out faster.
I just dyed my hair with Schwarzkopf Rich Caviar and I think it looks very good. It looks just as good as what stylists have done.
This contents so great! I want another color series!
Can you review Clairol Natural instincts. It is the one I use and love. I’m just curious to hear a profession’s thoughts. Also L’Oréal owns Garnier. That is probably why the look so much alike.
Yea until they reformulated it and I’m scared to use it cuz it looks bad on reviews
Will you please do best box dye bleach kits? I think this would be helpful to us.
We switched to goldwell in the salon and I freaking hate it so far! The entire line completely washes out or just does r work 😬
My hair is naturally black and I have dyed it with the garnier olia vivid garnet but it didn’t show through on my ends properly because my hair is thick and I only used one box. Do you think if I use two boxes of the deep garnet the colour will show through?
Could you do black box dyes ?
No they don’t. Not at all. I’ve used professional grade for years. No burn. You obviously are lying or mixed/applied wrong. Back to school for you.
You handle the hair swatches very professionally!😁
My mom swear by garnier oila for her blonde. She has all gray so it works for her. I find they never cover my gray roots.
Thank you for this! How do I get a reddish toned black. Black that reflects reddish brown in the sunlight?
Great review! Thank you for your advice. Haven't made up my mind about coloring yet.
Can you compare those that claim to be best for gray?
So just a question i havent even finished the video yet, but i always simply dye my hair darker, im naturally a blonde that faded to medium brown. With some golden and red undertones, and ive done pro amd box, i always tried to get it done if i could.
But as someone who just goes dark brown everytime, thats all thats ever touched my hair, i try to do it as little as i can get away with. So every 4 months maybe, possibly doing anroot touch up. (Right now my hair is waaaaay grown out.)
But is there a real difference in box dye, (only speaking on dark brown color) and going to like sallys and getting a 10 volume developer, and dark brown color?
Can you do same thing but with browns?
I like Madison Reed! I don’t lose my hair anymore!
IGK just came out with a box dye, I am intrigued!
I have reallyyyy dark brown hair (Looks almost completely black). Would these show up on my hair without bleaching it first?
I love the more natural red colors, it's hard to fond a more natural looking red for me. They're usually way too orange or super bright.
