Thanks Andy, response to Bender has blown me away. I honestly thought a handful of people may want one, been heart warming to get the response it has. Thanks everyone who has ordered and may order, will be doing my best to get them out as soon as possible. Oh and its not easy soldering on camera, I'm way better without an audience!
Nice case design! Are these printed in PETG?
@@jasondalton6111 Elegoo PLA+ mainly, as long as you don't let it get above 80C it won't melt!
Fantastic case design!
Thankfully I ordered one last night, before the rush! 😊
Chris you're a top guy and thanks Andy I subscribed, thank Ringway who put me on to you!
I love the way 3D printers are allowing this sort of small hardware business, for relatively low setup costs, and low risk experimentation to get the product right.
Neat little enclosure. Love the outro track Andy, Radio's and Trance, perfect blend 👌
Great product. I love that the files are for sale as well. This allows nerdy people to pay for the development so the designer is compensated for the work, and there is no need to wait on shipping, customs hassles, etc.
This is awesome Andy! I've been loving the meshtastic series, I'll be definitely buying a few full ready to go units soon as they are available..
Love this style outer casing. Best I've seen so far 🙂👍
Great case for the house. I hope the company that manufactured this is watching. What we also need is a weather proof case with a weather proof connection not only for the antenna but also for a solar cell to recharge the battery. We need to place the device at the top of a tree or on top of a building or mountain.
Not feasible in the UK, I've heard. Just not enough sun.
@@losttapes1705 not sure about that, I run my entire Wi-Fi HD CCTV system from south facing small solar panels in Yorkshire, northern England. I will be rigging a Heltec up to solar soon in a tree.
This whole setup belongs in a plastic ammo can. Solar is another story, which can be done okay with something like hot glue and drilled holes, but... Still, these things will last from Friday afternoon to Aunday evening on a 5,000mah battery if you don't send a ton of messages.
Good to hear, what size are the panels?@@Mellow_Wood_Hill
@@losttapes1705 Get a BIG panel.
Just got mine today, blue and black. Really well made! Thanks Chris 🍻
Thanks Dave!
Thanks Andy! Setting one up soon in Scarborough!😊
Excellent! One on order, probably the first of many. A marvellous idea, and glad to see that it's a UK designed and made product, with sensible pricing and shipping.
Richard P.
Only a Brit would have the ingenuity to design and manufacture a plastic box.
Fantastic! Thanks for the heads up 👍👍👍
Got two on the way, to be coupled to a Supaerials 868mhz 8dBi omni-directional antenna on the roof, and another for on my car dash with a small Paradar 868mhz whip. Can’t wait for them to arrive.
Thanks, I ordered the case. Also I noticed that Broadbandbuyer stocks the McGill antennas for 868mhz under WiFi then helium/it things. Gonna have to set up a node just for fun!
Great contribution Andy
"... a bit of an obsession..." 😂
I get it! This IS an incredible device for secure, always on, comms device for Grandma and the kids to stay in touch outside the net and in case of emergencies or not!
Cool stuff!
just use pmr 446/cb/ or dual band radios and you dont need a network of toy radios
@@londo776 What, and miss out on buying cool little pieces of tech gadgetry!?!
You must be mad! 😂
I can't see Grandma lugging a radio about in case of an emergency nor do I see a radio lasting more than a day in a child's(teens) hands either.
You should get one(3) and start playing! 👍
@@ddouglas3687 these toys will not fair much better
Definitely, I have a few high city centre work locations in the north ready for one, plus 3 relatives on hills like me that can all link up!
It will work for this, but without its own keyboard you loose all and any security as in encrypted messanging ability, this is because google and apple can easily see everything you type on your phones keyboard, so abaloutely no security here unless you buy a unit with a built in keyboard. Nice device for sure, as a reciever only or set to repeater mode, but your security is nil if you use a phone to write the message or read one someone sends you, same with computers unless your using a linux or RISC-V or ARM based open source device, nothing with an intel or amd chip in it. The instant you turn on one of these devices and connect it to your phone or computer google or apple instantly know the connected devices mac address and as they know who you are the link is forever made.
Exactly the setup I've ordered...takes a bit of searching but all now on way, thanks to all uk suppliers...had to ofder from ali ex. Couldn't find 868 on amazon. Looking foreward to it,hopefully firmware will go smooth..got yr vid on it..73!!!
Thanks for the heads-up on this cool case and well done Bender 😂 Two ordered (red & blue lol). Just waiting for the South West to join in the fun, let’s get this show on the road.
Just got 6 off him and soon ready to go NORTH EAST. Took me half an hour to fit all 6 with unit, battery and better antenna, great stuff Chris and To you Andy for awaking my Ham head again😂😂
Wow that's nice he named the case after you Andy! Cool
We have just gone live with Meshtastic in CV9 2 postcode area. Already we have three or four other meshes and because we live on top of a hill, it's already going 25 miles away on a handheld antenna and just in the upstairs window. The plan is to put one on the chimney stack for 360 coverage with a decent antenna. We have got about 8 units coming and are using an app that shows the best places to put them around the area.
Hopefully shout from B24!!!
Great video Andy as always... Chris at IKB3D is onto a winner with this.. I bought the files to print the Bender. Awesome 11/10 !
Cheers bud!
Got mine a few days ago excellent bit of kit.
Cheers Martin!
There's a great handheld case for the Heltec V3 on Printables too. Printed one of those today and it's very nice
That makes a really nice looking package this is surely going to snowball
Configure it, configure someone's phone, and it's Grandma friendly.
just use pmr 446/cb/ or dual band radios and you dont need a network of toy radios
Thanks, Andy 👍
Just got mine in cant wait nearly all sold out
Very nice, sparked my curiosity 👍🤞
Excellent video! Many thanks
Loving the channel. Definitely interested in some ready to go units for down here in West Cornwall. If no ready to go units are available i might have to bite the bullet and build my own. Thanks Andy and IKB3D
They arrive pretty quick from AliExpress, I was skeptical of AliExp but honestly my experience has been excellent for sourcing parts.
My printer is going to be busy, great video Andy!
Thx again Andy
mmmmmmmm, outro music! Thank You for everything you're putting into this. I'm a welder in a machine shop that's owned and run by mininites and even they're interested in this.
Interesting, now the question is what on earth is this for? What does it do? Perhaps an explanation would be good.
Yay! This really is a great thing. 👍
That’s so cool I love it. Do I need a phone to set it up though ? I’ve got an IPad that meets requirements but my Mac only runs Monterey & it says you need a newer vesrsion ? Or is that just for running the app & I can flash the chip on any Mac . It does seem quite complex still & I set up APRS once but that was when I was a techy about 22 years ago my brain has atrophied since then . Along with my G7 license which was G7BTH
Thanks for sharing. Looks good.
QUick question, when you flash to meshtastic, do you lose the functionality of the inputs and outputs, or can these be used, for instance to show a particular status of a message, or to reeact to a code being sent, just to light up some led's
I'm not into arduino type stuff, but i have a device on order just to play with.
Ordered 2 earlier today for fixed nodes. Any plans for a Tracker case or T-Beam Supreme case?
I wish I had the cash right now to jump on this. I noticed that there is a few stations/nodes on the Wirral where I live. I can't wait.
Hi Andy, have you tested the antenna on that? I've read some amazon reviews on the angled antennas and some test show different MHz results with the antenna straight at 45° and 90°.
Could we possibly get a link or something to the little magnetic helping hands he's using to solder? Those look super useful and I've never seen anything like them
Question: What is the minimum pieces of equipment that I'd need just to get up and running? I don't think I need the case or any of that, but just to test it and get connected; I can build one out later. Just the minimal pieces? I don't want to solder, although I could. I just want to buy the least amount of parts to connect to power and get connected. I can put it in a case later.
Looks neater than my takeaway-carton-with-hole-poked-through-the-side design
But a good bodge job is always enjoyable... wait did I type bodge?
@@zerofox3d the Chinese food that came free with the case was certainly enjoyable
Just curious but can you guys only get the heltec in the UK? Can’t you get the T-Beam Supremes or anything like that? Just wondering. Didn’t know if you were purposefully trying to build a lower budget mesh or what.
Pretty cool! I have been toying with selling some cases / built radios over here state side. I have made some custom Rak handhelds with solar panels on the back of them as well as usb powered outdoor nodes that mount on the roof of my house for personal use but seems like there is some demand for this stuff.
Having problems finding the mesh for the bender , which mhz should I get for the UK. Form what iv read there's two 433mhz and one that they day is faster 58??? Mhz . I'm totally new to all this and not tech savvy in any way at all but your videos have tempted me to jump in . Just need the core t one for the bender if you can send a link. Thanks darren
Which heltecV3 and display did you get. I ordered the cases but need the kit to go inside
So you charge the 18650 via the usb. Whats the typical runtime. Where do I get the SMA black antenna shown
AMAZING ROG
how long would the battery last? And where to find a map to find other Meshers? There is litteraly no one in my neighbourhood, i'm living a few minutes northwest of brussels.
Andy, great stuf! Really love your tunes too. Are you streaming anywhere?
Interesting product and video, thank you.
Can anyone tell me the make and model of the soldering jig seen at 02:25?
Not distracting from this but I just put my T-beam in a 3D printed case. It is a very similar overall concept with the same 18650 cell. Should not be too difficult to persuade a friend to have one on a window sill in their spare room. (I would switch GPS off for that). I can see one of these in the very near future too.
Since you have so much time with this product, can you tell me if possible why I get "Implicit ACK from another node" messages when trying to contact others?
I just bought one of the cases!
I like your Music at End of Video very good nice and lively club sounding track
Looks like a great product, but pity it's only a case, really needs to available as a ready to go unit, the demand is there.
I would not put a black PLA print onto my windowsill, this is OK now but might turn out not so nice in summer.
This Heltec V3 will last ~24 hours on a single 18650 Cell, so you should be aware that you will have to run a power there.
Ordered. Any nodes in or near Oxford? Pretty quiet here!
Thanks
Would it be possible to provide links to the various products for us here in North America / United States ?? Just want to make sure the correct components are selected as it is all new to me! We'd use 915 MHz correct?
Stupid question: does the USBC connection charge the battery in this setup? Or do you need an extra circuit for that?
I was tempted to get into 3d printing the cases but i dont know if theres a huge demand or not then i have to sort ebay and all that 😀
Andy! I need more of your music! Any links on your stuff?
Please, link for thats helping hand station :)
does this come with battery holder
I'm put off buying from Heltec.
I bought a wireless stick v3 with oled display.
It arrived today.
I can successfully upload firmware and I'm assuming it's Heltec v3 or wireless stick light it tried every version for both.
But after reset or power cycle it didn't do anything.
Nothing on the oled display and it was not showing in the app or Androids Bluetooth or WiFi discovery.
Either I got a duff unit or its not supported now.
Im thinking I should save up a bit and get one already flashed with Meshtastic.
This would be perfect for a node in my flat.

Andy, what track is playing at the end? Love your music esp this one
It's called Time. 😁

Man... I've got 10 nodes with some absolutely insane antenna and altitude locations and I've never seen any nodes at all but my own. Hopefully that changes soon!
Share the default longfast channel to your nodes and see if that changes.

Nice tidy unit
Nice 👍🏻
Pleasantly surprised by the music at the end of the video
I want to set one up in Mid Wales :) All sold out though :)
Can anyone clarify what 18650 battery I need for this enclosure (button top or flat top?)
First batch already gone😮. Thanks Andy for the link. Managed to get a 'Bender'from batch B 😂- M7SSS
I have no idea what it is or what it’s for please enlighten me.
Just ordered a second one😊
why
I want one Andy
Is this for short wave radio?
Do these ship to the US?
They should make a case for the T-beam.
This video randomly popped up in my feed... What is this mesh/meshtastic? That's talked about? Im legit curious
whats the dominant band ? 868 or 43x ? thinkink of throwing on up on roof here in york citycentre
868
How does this thing work?
Completely lost, what's it for?
Can LoRa be used to text walkie-talkies with message capabilities?
04:48 Love the closing music. Might have to download and clip the music. You should upload it as a stand alone to your channel or start a second channel for more. Yes, MORE! :)
or you could buy the album 😁 www.cloudsto.com/store/music-1/off-the-beaten-track-andy-kirby-detail.html
@@andykirbyHmm "Your One" ...Here is "your one". One what? One awesome track :)
This is awesome. Does the USB socket on the side allow for battery charging within the unit itself?
It does! You can run powered without the cell in place or with cell charging :)
@@zerofox3d good job, mate 👍🏼
Prior to digging info out, I was kind of excited by long range radio networks. But in terms of LoRA-Wan, my understanding is that its not packet based, doesn't use TCP or UDP, and while it has a couple of applications, it is to be frank an off grid SMS 'thing' with some GPS added. The kit is expensive for what people get, and if people have fun with it, fair play - but I find it a very restrictive/expensive .. hobby? would it be fair to say hobby..
Anyhoos..
Huh?!
What is the outro music song name?
Will this builder be shipping to the USA?
I want to get into this!
Yes!
Should ship as a whole unit.
Nice one Andy, I’ve ordered mine.
@IKB3D Thankyouuuu x
How long can the heltec boards run on battery?
Less than a day. The Heltec runs on the ESP32 processor, which is power-hungry. Other devices -- the Lilygo T-Echo and the RAK WisBlock, for example -- run on the nRF52, which is a lot more power-efficient.
Why do you run the esp32 without an antenna? This will destroy the device.
Radio is not set so there's no TX.
What does it do though?!!
How do you access the USB port ?.
It's accessible on the side.
Do you mean what connection?
What is it & what does it do?
It's a case for a texting device that communicates through a decentralised mesh of users. This means that, unlike with mobile phones, there isn't a central point where the service can be shut down by someone (the government, for example).
Watched video. Checked my sink. Nothing changed. Dishes still in there. Beginning to doubt this changes everything.
nice
music nice too
