Vicenza, Italy is a great town to visit. Located in the Veneto region approximately 20-45 minutes by train from Venice Vicenza makes a wonderful day trip from Venice or a nice base for seeing the Veneto.
Many US military personel are acquainted with Vicenza with its military base (which is expanding). Here are five things that anyone (but mostly US visitors) will love and hate (well dislike a little bit) about visiting Vicenza, Italy.

I'm so happy to know that Vicenza, my city, is well seen in the world.. I really appriciated this video!

I enjoyed most of your video. I lived in Vicenza from 1973-75 and loved it. The city has a warm place in my heart and I would go back in a flash if I could. Re: Anti-American sentiments - most Vicentini like Americans on a personal level, and most are glad to have the US as an ally, but it is important to remember that, ally or not, it is still a foreign military base on their sovereign land. How pleased would you be to have an Italian airbase in Cincinnati?

Indeed sir. I know I am jumping a little late on this but as a vicentino after watching this video I wanted to point out exactly what you've said. Although I appreciated the video overall, it is a bit unfair to call "just a bunch of crazies" the people that have expressed concerns on the enlargement of the US military installations in Vicenza. The author of the video might not know that it was a sentiment shared by many more citizens than the usual "far leftists" and co.. Most of the fear was based on a factor mentioned in the video itself: Vicenza is a small city of approx 100k inhabitants, and placing there 1/5 (20K) extra population of foreign military people well, doesn't it seem quiete a lot? Not to mention the not so chrystal clear history of "drunkness and damaging" of soldiers there over the years (dont get me wrong im not saying that its an only american thing but put in perspective of a normal-sleepy italian countryside province where drunk fights are normally not implying big dudes that maybe were in Iraq just one week before..). Anyways the decisions of where and how to place new military bases into the italian soil are obviously taken way above people's awareness and way before they actually start to take place so people were kind of bummed by that reason as well, so they were enraged not towards our american allie but instead to our politicians muddy politics on the matter.
Now a few years have passed and the equilibrium that was already there with the old base seems to have adjusted and hold to this new scale so don't worry, beside the bs we're friends with our fellows americans as we've always been.

Army guy here, I liked Vicenza. I stayed on base when I visited. I spoke to a number of the citizens and they told me that the protesters were bussed in from farther south.
It is only like 30 min to Venice and Verona. The architecture was cool without a doubt.
The citizens were really nice people, especially compared to my staying in Berlin just before.

I was stationed in Vicenza from 2009-2011. Gotta agree with the convenience of travel to other amazing cities. Venice, Verona, Florence and Bologna are all pretty close, and Milan is only a little farther. Plus if you have a little more time, you can travel down the coast and visit a whole different country in San Marino, which is near a great beach in Rimini.

About the hotels in the area and in Italy in general: a common thing is to stay at apartments and family B&Bs. We stayed in a small village next to Vicenza and it was the best experience ever! B&B Le Stanze di Rosy was the name of the place.

I always end up coming by Rick Steves' or your videos on accident, so I just had to subscribe to you as well! Usually I'm just looking up Italian or Greek places I'd love to visit, but this time...I recently & randomly became interested in joining the Army. & Then I learned they had a base in Italy! A blessing from God because idk what else it could be! So I looked up the city & of course you had already done a video on it & even mentioned the Army base! I'm strangely grateful for you honestly. I really like your channel & your love (& experiential knowledge of! &) for other cultures, & your cute family!! :)

We are getting the biggest American military base in Europe, two steps away from a beautiful historical city like Vicenza, without anyone asking our opinion as citizens or caring about the environmental impact of the project. How would the Americans feel if 20,000 Italians decided to make a big ass base next to a quiet american town without the approval of the Americans??? Please you cant condone that.

There are fireworks at the American NATO base every July 4th. Vicenza is one of the few cities in Europe which actually celebrate US Independence Day. LOL. My dad had to buy a Opel to replace his Ford which got stuck, jammed, in a Vicenza street. The Alps aren't far away and can be seen from Vicenza.

Jack webb Hi Jack. I was born and live in Vicenza. That's not true. Probably the 15th of August, but you'll always find the essential you need even that special day. Of course Vicenza is not New York, so if you're looking to go shopping and want to find fast food every corner, Vicenza is not the right city for you. We do not have metro. To walk the city center it takes maximum 25 minutes the longest way. For the rest, it is a stunning city. It is rich of art, history, architecture, food, wine, and the city is a feast for photographers. 10 times better than staying in the crowds of tourists in Venice or Verona. And cheaper. Enjoy Italy!

I really resent Vicenza. I lived in Padova 10 years ago as part of a work and language course, but then got sent to work in Villa Michelangelo which was totally out of the way of everything and my friends, I was isolated and alone and I just grew to hate this place. I'm sure if I visited again though and stayed more central it'll be better.

Italian people against military base in Vicenza are not "just some crazy people". A LOT of citizens demonstrated since 2006 against US military bases in Vicenza.
You know, it's difficult to talk about peace and environmentalism to americans, but the reality is that our wonderful city (World Heritage Site, the city of Palladium - the architect in which you have been inspired to build the White House) has been "devastated" by Americans.
In my region (Veneto) there are 18 Us military bases and across the Country there are 113 Us military bases. We don't want to be accomplices of your fucking wars, we have enough of your bases which have a devastating environmental impact in our territories.
We like americans who come here to contemplate how much infinite beauty has our Country, we love americans who come in peace. But we don't like uniforms, guns, bombs and all kind of things make you violent and ignorant people.

YES. THEY ARE REALLY FRIENDLY. I don't know how many people you know from Vicenza but they're amazing. I am from south Italy (Naples)
