    I haven't even hit play on this video yet, but I just need to say I already love the concept -- based on the title. There is SO much we can do in our homes to scratch cook and provide for our families without homesteading. Sometimes it feels like it's an 'all or nothing' thing. Sometimes it feels like I am 'lesser' than those who own a bunch of land in the country -- because I rent in the city. Or because I don't have a massive garden or chickens and a dairy cow, that I automatically need to buy everything processed at the grocery store. But no! There are SO many things you can still do without a homestead. So many local farmers to support. So many things that can be made from scratch. There is such a happy medium to strike!

    Can you do a video on homeschooling the children? I feel like a lot of TH-camrs that don’t show their kids anymore refuse to talk about educational content (which you can do while respecting privacy and not showing the kids) and it’s so unfortunate! 😊

    I feel like “homesteading”, like being “crunchy” is a spectrum. I have a garden, I cook from scratch, love my sourdough starter (as well as my kombucha mother), buy from local farms, make a lot of my own products (cleaners, sprays, etc.), homeschool my 4 kids and I consider myself a homesteader to the degree that I can be. I also live in the Fraser valley but can’t legally have chickens (thanks local government) but one day I hope to! I don’t think it’s bad to call yourself a homesteader to whatever degree you can be! Maybe we can call ourselves Urban Homesteaders!
    Love your videos Sarah! Lots of love from the freshly postpartum mama you randomly met in a grocery store in Abby last year and offered to help me with all my kiddos 🫶🏻

    Thanks so much for this. I am mama of five, wannabe homesteader, but definitely not one, renting, and so grateful to keep discovering what I CAN do.
    And I cannot believe the lengths some people will go to, to leave a negative comment (below). You are doing a fantastic job, ST! I find myself busy all day and cleaning my kitchen late at night. I have people tell me I need to do less and yada yada, but it all hangs together to make me happily busy and fulfilled. I have a bigger age spread in my kids (15-1), and some real late bedders - but we home school and it’s not a problem if they want to lie in - point being, I just keep chugging along and fit stuff on around the rhythm.
    Lots of love and God bless xx

    One thing you have that is a luxury and a privilege is access to farmers and a miller. A lot of us started homesteading because we didn't have access so we had to make do ourselves, there's nothing wrong with using what's around you and supporting all the farmers! We small scale farmers appreciate it :)

      @hannahthehomesteader 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      She said "certain" animals. That's true in most places, even in where I live in a more rural area of Montana. You might be limited from owning certain livestock or a certain quantity per acre. You might be restricted on roosters in the city or any number of animals in an HOA. Or even a garden in a really strict HOA. That's true in America as well. I have a 5 acre homestead but I'm in an HOA. I can only have 3 livestock, 12 birds, and no roosters. Sure, it's more than Sarah can have, but it's still a restriction on "certain" animals.

      I think her point is that she can still make good homemade food and household goods without growing those products herself. Many people believe that the only way to truly be “all natural” is to grow everything yourself. For some things that’s true and then for others it’s not. She is aware that homemaking and homesteading are different things but for many people they go hand in hand for their lifestyle. They homemake from what they homestead. She is showing what she accomplishes without growing it all herself. She does a fantastic job! Go mama!

    Sad to see you deliberately photoshopping your kids into the thumbnail just so you can blur their faces, especially when one isnt even wearing a shirt. I usually enjoy your content but it has been bothering me since you posted this video and i needed to say something. I had really respected how you protect your kids and blur their faces, but now it feels you are using your "protection" of them as a technique to get more views. Why did they even need to be in the thumbnail - we all would have watched it without it. But editing them in feels weird and gimmiky.

    SAUERKRAUT QUESTION
    Have you changed your cabbage-to-salt ratio for your sauerkraut recipe? Literally less than 48 hours ago I followed the directions you gave in your canning video, in which you suggested using 2 tsp of salt for every pound of cabbage, however now you're suggesting 2 tsp of salt for every kg of cabbage.
    Since a pound is only about 0.45 kg, that's a big discrepancy - do you find it works just as well with approximately half the salt that you used to use?

  • @ktcat146
    @ktcat146 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I'm genuinely confused why having a garden is illegal. Why do they consider it a bad thing to grow your own food? I'm asking as someone who lives pretty much directly below you in Washington state and while we are certainly in different countries with different laws/mandates, I have never heard of not being allowed to have a garden. In our neighborhoods in most places, we are allowed up to 4 hens (no roosters but people still sometimes keep theirs and no one really minds) and can grow pretty much whatever we want without permission. Unless you share a yard within a complex then there should be no reason to make gardening illegal.

      Can you just go away? Spreading negativity is not the moves. If your life is this miserable, get off social media and get some help.

      @@annalynngriffin7730 It's not negativity. Homesteading is generally messy and super unpredictable.

      This is why my husband is the one who gardens and I do NOTHING except cook and eat the produce! I’m not a hands in the dirt type person. I hate bugs. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I tell him I cook and clean the inside of the house and he does all the maintenance and chores outside the house.

    Where on earth do you live that it's illegal to garden? Sounds like some communism
