I think he is suffering from depression. It's just minor right now, but in my opinion if this has happened a lot before with him, then he should see a counsellor soon. The person will try to distant themselves from their loved ones for no reason. That's one of it's symptoms. Even when the things are fine the person will still feel empty and hopeless from inside. Depression is very hard to understand actually and by the time you get it, it is already late. So I hope this helps.
