- I finally get around to checking out J.B.O., and what a perfect song to start on, as this is an absolutely fantastic ode to metal in the form of a rendition of John Miles' well known song "Music". There are so many references to other metal, rock, and punk bands in here, that I almost felt like I was playing a game trying to figure it out. Let me know how many references you caught!

You could say J.B.O. is Germany's answer to Weird Al Yankovic. These guys are covering everything left and right and make (great) Metal out of it. But usually they do their songs in German and that could be the reason they aren't really known in the US. I discovered them more than 20 years ago and still love them.

If you switch Polka for Metal then Weird Al is not bad a comparison.
J.B.O. is comedy metal. Very skilled musicians, with funny attitude. Understanding the (german) lyrics is half the joy of their music.
Think of J.B.O. as metal version of Weird Al Yankovic. Lots of covers (or renditions) and lots of own stuff.
Oh man, I feel old now. I have their first album where they were still called "James Blast Orchestra".
It is no surprise that they didn't gain traction outside of Germany since they sing predominantly in German and their main focus is on parodying existing songs.
Some of their favourites of mine are "Symphony der Verstopfung" (Basically "Symphony of Destruction" but basically singing the "Symphony of Constipation"), "Im Verkehr" ("In Zaire" with the topic changed to sex education) or "Rache" ("Nightshift" from the Commodores but he is singing of taking revenge on someone by secretly pissing into his beer).
You see, the problem is that the humor totally gets lost in translation.
I am happy to see that this particular song was worth it just based on the video alone.

Many years ago in a Metaldisco near Remagen (Germany) called Rockpalast they played JBO's Roots, and no one noticed it, until Pavarotti starts to sing :-D
First EC then WBTBWB and now J.B.O. which was my Metal / Hard Rock entry band back in the mid to late 90ies.
I love JBO! Their humor is outstanding. They are not well known outside of Germany as they sing mostly in German. I've been a fan for a long time! Great to see them back!
J. B. O. Was, is and will always be a cover band of a different kind. That's part of their DNA. Metal and hard rock covers of other songs. And we love them for this.

I'm not even a metalhead but J.B.O. is special. A real-life-meme-metal-band but actually cool. There is just something very German about that level of methodical silliness. Only other acts I could compare them to would be Weird Al and maybe Reel Big Fish, both of those musically entirely different of course. But then there is also the language barrier and the fact that their references are stuff only known in Germany a lot of the time. ... The more I think about it the more I want "TH-camrs reacting to J.B.O." to be a category. That would be so amazing! xD
The shark going for the beer in the Nevermind scenes just might be a reference to another J.B.O. song called "Der weiße Hai im Dechsendorfer Weiher" "The white shark in the pond of Dechsendorf"...
There was a shark that ate people until bribed to stop with either three virgins or beer (Kitzmann). But there were just two virgins left in the area. So they put him into a basin of beer. However, the shark drank so much that the people didn´t get enough anymore. So they put the shark back into the pond where it could continue to kill. ("Who cares for a few dead people? Without beer we don´t feel good")

Oh yes... J.B.O is around there for a long time... My first J.B.O Concert was i think 1999 in Hamburg
They made an album with English versions of their own songs called "Happy Metal Thunder".
I know them for almost 20 years now and they literally pulled me into metal. They were the first band I saw on stage and are my most seen. Met some of my best friends and my first boyfriend in their online community/ fanclub. Yes, they have a special placw in my little pink metalheart.

But, dude, you got the flag wrong. It cannot be black, red and gold for J.B.O. It NEEDS to be black, pink and gold as stated in their song "Verteidiger des wahren Blödsinns" which you definitely should check out sometime! (Having a look at the lyrics is recommended. They are hilarious and absolutely true.)

I think this was actually a perfect introduction to JBO. Most of their stuff is a rendition of another song and also most of it is in German. Also the music style is pretty much like in here. Solid stuff, but nothing to write home about. It's all in the lyrics and the humor. They are kinda considered baby's first metal band because pretty much everyone listened to them when they were 13. I still love them and have seen them live 3 times (over 15 years or so I think, last was right before lockdown) and I still enjoy them. But it's not something I listen to constantly. I currently don't know any english originals. Kind of "Ich liebe dir" because it mixes bad/wrong grammer in both german and english.
Another older english song I like is their rendition of Raining Blood.
But this is probably the reason why you have never heard of them before. Other than stuff like the medieval metal it's not strong enough music wise to listen to it without understanding the lyrics. But like I said, I still like them, just try to give a bit of context.
J.B. O is one really old "staple food" in German heavy metal. Don't know how often I have seen them play live at metal festivals, and they always rock. :D

So welcome in j. B. O army... When we were 16 year old kids in 1996 really everbody had the same 3 albums : nirvana nevermind, metallica black album and J. B. O "explizite lyric" and everybody is still able to remember and recitade evry fu... Line. Still if you wake him in the middle of the night. Theyre for sure not the best band or the best musicians, and nearly every song is a cover as they usually dont do original songs but : they love and breath what they do and i would say they are the haerthwarming funiest band in the world.

Wow never thought I'd see JBO on your channel! I'm genuinely curious how you react to them, since this is one of their worst songs honestly, but their better song rely heavily on understanding the jokes in the lyrics. They are so much fun live, my buddy and I have a tradition where we visit at least one JBO concert every year, sadly last year our almost 10 year streak was broken because of covid restrictions, can't wait for the next concert!

Hello everyone, I came from Germany and grew up near Erlangen .... J.B.O. has accompanied me throughout my youth and will be with me for the rest of my life. I haven't been able to pay the number of times I J.B.O. seen life even at small local village festivals. Often the whole band came to the bar after the gig and the party continued for a long time. I'm so happy for J.B.O. to see and hope that there is still a lot to come!

Love the shark snatching the beer bottle. It's a reference to one of their own songs, "Der Weiße Hai im Dechsendorfer Weiher" (The great white shark in the Dechsendorf lake). That scene pretty much sums up most of the lyrics. :)

I have a special connection to JBO. My first concert to which i drove after i got my licence was JBO (Cologne 1998). Vito (one of the Singers) and i share the same birth date (not the year).
What i love the most about them, the a really fun. They dont take them self to serious, but play with passion and are the defenders of the "Blödsinn".

Having a cover as first impression is not a bad choice since a huge amount of their songs are covers with fun (and sometimes a bit dirty) lyrics. I really liked them since I first heard from them through friends in school a long time ago around the time they've released Explizite Lyrik. :)
What's also really nice about them: Vito has a few really good workshops and playthroughs of their songs on the official JBO channel and has a few amazing and more serious covers on his private channel. The Dust in the Wind cover (feat. Henning Basse) (th-cam.com/video/RMhIjXk98yM/w-d-xo.html) from a few months ago is really worth a listen!

I think I found a reference that I have not yet seen that it has been mentioned yet, perhaps as it's a reference to one of the early works of J.B.O. "Im Dechsendorfer Weiher da schwimmt der weisse Hai" (in the pond of Dechsendorf, there swims the white shark).

The shark might be a reference to one of their very early EPs "Der weiße Hai vom Dechsendorfer Weiher" which translates to "The white shark from the Dechsendorf pond" (swimming lake at a village near Erlangen).

Wow, this is gonna be great. Not their best song but this is the band I'm listening the longest (since I'm 11 years... over 20 years now!) and I've seen live the most. They're very nice guys. They do a little fan-fest every year with sometimes fan-karaoke where you can sing the songs live on stage with them :D

i discovered J.B.O. decades ago and went also on concerts (unfortunately its been awhile). Yes, their songs are usually in german. But i really think you should check out "Gänseblümchen" (daisy). You will know the sound, but probably won't understand any of the lyrics. It is really fun!
