The translation from what Hansi was talking about in german:
'No objections from up here, looks great! One can work with that, at least for starters. We'll stay Tolkienish. We'll cover a dark chapter in the history of the Noldor, a song about the gentleman (aka: sir, lord, mister) Fingolfin and his last hours - When Time Stands Still! At The Iron Hill!'
Also, the reason why you didn't like powermetal before is probably the same why you haven't heard of all those european and asian bands: You are a metalhead in America. While the rest of the world is totally used to being swamped with foreign music all the time (mostly US pop music), which made all of us generally more open to and interested in foreign bands and sounds, the US is very homogenic when it comes to art, music and movies. That has many reasons, but it's a fact that most americans are only used to the american style of their music genre and it never even occured to them, to take a look outside their little box. As I often hear from american (but also australian and canadian) acquaintances who come here to study, it's because most of you guys are taught from birth that the american version is the best there is anyway (and often don't even know, that it's an american 'version' and did not originate in the US at all). And if you already have the best, there is no reason to look further, right?
However, not to brag but Powermetal as it is known everywhere outside of US, originated in Germany around the 60s (thanks to 'The Beatles') and was cultivated here to ridiculous perfection by bands as Blind Guardian, Powerwolf and Helloween (to name a few) in the 80s. And because we are so used to sharing and taking from each other in Europe, different countries have bred their own powermetal babies, like Alestorm (Scotland), Stratovarius (Finnland) or Rhapsody Of Fire (Italy), with Gloryhammer being an all international Powermetal melting pot band (though it's pretty common to have band members from different countries in european metal).
Additionally, the european Powermetal has since long left its Speed- and Trashmetal baby shoes behind and is nowadays far closer to Folk Metal, european Epic Metal (also very different from US Epic Metal) or Symphonic Metal. Oh, and most of the vocalists are classically trained singers, so that adds to a good sound.

This song talks about Fingolfin (one of the greatest Noldor kings) who, after a disastrous war against
the forces of evil in which he lost all of his cared ones, furious and desperate, decides to ride with his horse towards Angband, to face Morgoth (a god and lord of evil), who caused the war and was responsible of all the death and destruction. It was the only time in which Morgoth went out of his fortress. Despite being only an elf, Fingolfin was able to stand up to him and even managed to wound him seven times, although he eventually succumbed after a deadly strike. In the Silmarillion it is said that as Fingolfin crossed the Dor-nu-Fauglith (a desert land) on his horse Rochallor, he resembled Oromë himself (another god, hunter of monsters and wild beasts), as he was so full of anger and hatred. Morgoth's soldiers and servants fled at the mere sight of him. Very epic, epic stuff!

One of BG's signatures is that there is a lot of layered sound, something that they took from Queen. Another one of their signatures is that just about all of the chorus parts in just about all their songs are Sing-Song. Whether at European festivals or US club shows, crowd participation is huge at a Guardian show. My recommendation for your next song is "Nightfall."

    • @Dosenpruegel
      @Dosenpruegel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

In adittion to whats said above: There are two BG albums that somehow display up to 50% of every setlist of a BG concert: Tales from the Twilight World and Nightfall in Middleearth. You may be interested in the Blind Guardian Twilight Orchestra, an orchestric (non metal!) side project by Hansi and André. They released the album Legacy of the Dark Lands last year (after 20+ years of thinking, trying and announcing) and its a reeeaaaaaly epic musical ride, guided by the bards voice in all of his facillities. A masterpiece of musicianship and somehow a way for longtime BG fans to re-listen and re-evaluate the newer BG recordings. I really changed my perspetive towards them and like them more than ever.

I believe that is the guitar André is actually most known to play. For a long-time Blind Guardian fan, it always looks weird when he's not playing a red guitar, heh.
Also, interesting fact about André: his guitar-playing career nearly came to an end in the mid-'90s, due to nerve damage in his elbow. He talked about it in one of the "Revisited" videos they uploaded on their TH-cam channel some time back (which I highly recommend watching, if you want to know more about the history of the band). He said that he was apparently like one day away from completely losing the use of his other arm. Kind of incredible that despite that he's still one of the best (and most underrated) guitarists out there. Anyway, it just made me think if that might be one of the reasons he's using that wristband and tape on his guitar. I could be completely off on that guess (I don't even remember which of his arms was damaged), but it does make me wonder.

You are totally right - that Wacken is a pilgrimage. There is a reason why the festival ground is referred to as the "Holy Metal Land" It is all encompassing from when you either: are driving through Germany with W:O:A in tape on your back window giving it the \m/ to all the other cars with the same (trust me... this starts virtually from the moment you cross into Germany on the Autobahn) or you land at "the Heavy Metal Airport" of Hamburg (all the airport staff will be wearing Wacken shirts) waiting for the shuttle to the festival ground - you'll be waiting with other fans from around the world... South America, Japan, Australia etc.
It's the way not just the local village, but the surrounding villages embraces the festival. The acoustic sessions in the village church or taking the bus over to the village outdoor pool complex while your entertained by the Metal marching band - Blaas of Glory.
Plus you've obvs only seen the performances on the 2 main stages on youtube.... There is another 10 stages to keep you entertained

Yes, I jump up and down everytime I see you choosing a Blind Guardian song! You can't go wrong with them, so every suggestion you get about them is golden. Since I haven't seen it from anyone, I will throw in "Majesty" as a song you should check out (beware, you will get a concussion after 7 minutes of nonstop headbanging). It's the first song from their first album and show their roots in speed metal before they transitioned more inte power. I have found two live videos with good enough quality, one from Rockpalast 2016 and one from way earlier with them being much younger (uploaded by someone named "Konstantinos Peramatiotiss"). Bouth videos offer a lot to dive into as a roadie.
Speaking about roadie things, I would love to hear you explain how you prepare and adjust for a show during such different conditions as this one, where they start the concert in daylight, but finishes it in total darkness. Do you just let things roll on as usual, or what kind of adjustments do you take with lighting, pyro/special effects, etc.?

I've listened to Blind Guardian for like allmost 25 years and I always enjoyed how they kept moving their music forward. Imaginations from the other side and, Somewhere far beyond and Tales from the Twilight World are all great albums and more..gritty? Some of their aboslute heaviest songs are on those albums. And then Nightfall in middle earth came out. Not as heavy and fast allthou the heavyness is still there of course with more orchestral arrangements. More..epicness, if thats a word. A night at the opera i think is the album that divides the most, theres alot of...STUFF on that album. The song And then there was silence is a 14 minute epic which I love but I think some people think its "too much". Not me. And now, legacy of the dark lands, their latest one is like a fricking movie score. I absolutley adore the journey this band has taken from rough german power metal in 1988 to some of the most wellproduced metal you'll ever hear.

"slowly and feared, the dark lord appeared"
Fingolfin, lord of elves, enraged by a massacre of his people by Morgoth (Sauron true master, and one of the gods of the creation) charged trough the land until the dark door of the dark lord domain. who caught glimpse of him and his horse mistaken them for another of the gods. he challenged Morgoth to get out of his citadel to duel toghether and in the end the Dark One accepted to keep the loyalty of his minions. after a long fought battle, fingolfin severed/deeply cut one of his opponend ankle and pierced him several times, the land was littered with craters when the dark holes hit the ground, until the fatal hit killed the noble Fingolfin.
