The entire Jagged Little Pill album is so good! She helped set the stage for female singer/songwriters to realize it’s okay to express their raw emotions and pain, unapologetically through their music.

All these decades later I still know every note, every word of this song- it’s still the only song I’ve ever heard by a female artist (I’m almost 50😳)that expresses THIS level of anger. I think (besides her unique voice and a star studded band behind her) the reason this song became so popular and beloved is because of the expression of her anger at his betrayal ...
The brutal honesty of how angry betrayed and hurt she felt was perfectly captured in this song. And that’s something you still don’t get to hear from female artists!

    • @bloodybutunbowed291

      Well said.
Taylor Swift had a few songs in the 2000s, but I think those fall under Bubblegum Pop.
As far as Angry Rock, one of the only current songs I can think of that expresses anger like this is "Animosity" by The Warning.

Thanks for your reaction! This whole album is terrific and won her a Grammy award. Although Alanis claims she wrote this for herself and it is not about any one in particular, actor Dave Coulier (he played Uncle Joey in "Full House") states this song is about him. Alanis was a teenager at the time they were involved and he was quite a bit older. David broke it off to date someone his own age. Some of the lyrics were direct statements to him and the time line of when this song came out are about right. That is Taylor Hawkins playing drums in this song.

Every time I listen to this song I have to play it two or three times minimum. You can hear in her voice and see in the video, she is just metaphorically bleeding all over the stage, someone ripped her heart out and she is holding it up to the light to show everyone what they did. In a world where women still get discouraged from taking up emotional space, that's such a powerful thing to do.

    • @rebeccajohnson8769
      @rebeccajohnson8769 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Oh yes! I agree so much with this.
The 90's also gave us Tori Amos, with Crucify ("So you can make me cum / That doesn't make you Jesus") and Hey Jupiter ("if my heart's soaking wet, Boy your boots can leave a mess") - but You Oughta Know was sheer anger + hurt. Women generally aren't allowed to be angry, and this song was so damn cathartic and unique. Totally an anthem for every woman ever dumped.

Part of what makes this song so amazing is the fact that the music at times is such a contradiction to her raw emotion! It's sarcasm at it's best - "I want you to know I'm happy for you" NOT and "I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner"! So excellent!

Oh man, you definitely inspired me to break out Jagged Little Pill. I played the crap out of that album back in the day, and sang with it at the top of my lungs. It is so empowering, cathartic, and both lyrically and musically impressive. I just love that Alanis played God in Dogma, the cult classic movie written by Kevin Smith starring Matt Damon, Ben Afleck, and about 10 other insanely good actors and comedians including George Carlin, Alan Rickman...seriously, everyone was in that film, it was an embarrassment of riches, and Alanis's God just made me so happy, lol.

She has a lot of great songs. My favorite is "Uninvited," which isn't from this album but from a movie soundtrack. But JLP has a lot of great songs on it. My fave from it would have to be, "All I really Want." It's her other really "hard" rocking song from this album. There are few other really good ones, "Hand In My Pocket" and "You Learn" are more upbeat songs. Also, it was one of the first CD's to have a "hidden" track. Which was a trend in the 90's. Certain bands would record additional music or messages on the last track of a CD, but it wouldn't play until after a few minutes. Most people, when they hear the last song on an album end and then silence after that would think the album's is over and take the CD out and play something else. In her case, the "hidden" track was number 13, even though there were only 12 listed on the back cover. It's an alternate version of "You Oughta Know" and after about a minute of silence, she sings an absolutely haunting and heartbreaking acoustic song. Check it: th-cam.com/video/NltkkFv4F9E/w-d-xo.html

Alanis is a very talented and powerful Canadian songwriter. Her voice is very distinctive and this album made her a Grammy winner and worldwide star.... She's still pretty amazing... HIGHLY recommend this entire album (there's a secret song at the end) and all her new stuff!!!

You Shoulda Know that Alanis was out there.
One benefit of the record companies and radio stations is that they promoted artists.

I don't know how anyone interested in music can not have listened to Jagged Little Pill, even if its not in your genre. It's a pretty seminal album in music history, but it is a while ago now and its nice to see people coming across her for the first time.
I actually loved her second album even more "Supposed former infatuation Junkie" but thats not quite as commercial as jagged, and it took me a few listens to really get into at the time.

Looking back at this song from a post-2000 perspective, the RHCP contribution is unmistakable...they were on the rise but weren't quite household names yet when they played on this album.
You you were alive in Canada in 1995, you heard this song 10x a day whether you chose to or not. Monster breakout hit.

Nothing like a woman scorned. LOL. I grew up in the 1970s, teen in the 80s. This song was one of the earliest 1990s grunge rock songs with this type of shock language really. There probably were more, but this was one of the first I remember. Music certainly changed afterwards.

This song is so good. You really feel this one. Every time she says “But you’re still alive!” Like it’s an accusation you want to ask whoever that is why he isn’t freaking dead yet. And when she says “And every time I scratch my nails down someone else’s back, I hope you feel. Well can you felt it?” My face just mirrors that emotion. I’ve never even had a nasty break up like this and I fully empathize. The lyrics are good, the production is good, that base line is so good but her delivery drives it to 11 out of 10.

One of my all-time favorite girl alternative rock songs. From my understanding, Alanis wrote this song after a break-up. This song has been one of the theme songs for heartbroken, betrayed & angry women since then. Alanis holds nothing back.. she sings it like it is, and express's the emotional hot mess all women feel when a guy Fk's them over.

I was 12 or 13 and grew up during the best time ever. My older sister had this album, and I was OBSESSED. 90’s alternative is my absolute favorite, and Alanis is at the top of the list. I LOVE her honesty, and anger, and the vibe she brings to all of her music. She doesn’t hold back with her thoughts, words, or feelings, and that was just so refreshing.
