Fifty years ago ii made my first quilt-a log cabin quilt in a queen size. This was before rotatory cutters, chain piecing, walking feet, quilt rulers, cutting mats, pre-cuts, and machine quilting. It seemed to take forever to make, especially the hand quilting. I gave it to my mother, who loved it! (Especially since she couldn’t sew.). I won a blue ribbon at the county fair with my first quilt!! Looking back, I’m amazed I did it without all the modern conveniences we take for granted! I have this quilt now and wouldn’t take anything for it. I hope future generations will recognize the effort it took to make it. 😊
Absolutely! I appreciate it! My grandma made all of her grandkids hand sewn quilts. Unfortunately, I washed it and alot of seams came out. I recently repaired it. I realized what she went through to make all those quilts. I cherish my quilt and will not make that mistake again!!
I love the flying geese quilt on the bright blocks. 🥰
❤ Thanks 👋😊🇦🇺 I am a beginner.
THIS is your best video EVER!!!! I wish this had been out there years ago when I began to quilt. All the "basic" blocks in ONE VIDEO! What a concept!! And your explanations of WHY make things so understandable. All the questions I had back then would have been answered saving me hours of frustration. I hope every newbie to quilting finds this video. Well done!!!
Sandra, thank you so much for the lovely comment. My wife sent it to me because she was very touched by it.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a beautiful comment! It really made my day! ❤️
Excellent beginner tutorial. My suggestion would be to tell a beginner to measure the log cabin each round that completes a square. ❤
Excellent added tip!
Fallon, This video was terrific! I've been quilting for some time now and still really enjoyed watching along. Good instructions for newbie quilter's. Great idea to share your quilts emphasizing each of the blocks you taught and also how each block can be combined for expanding quilt pattern designs. Thanks for sharing. 💖
I don’t know what quilt I like the best. I like them all so I will try to make one at a time. I’m just learning how to quilt. thank you for going slow and repeating what you did it really came in handy and taught me some things! Thank you!
I love the red white and blue half square and geese blocks
I love all your quilts but the 1/2 square behind you is my favorite! I love the simple quilting inside the large 1/2 square ♥️
The quilt behind me is one of my favorites! That quilt made me fall in love with scrappy quilts!
Having a trunk show was a super way to conclude! Showing us the possibilities was a great idea!!
Thank you ❤️
I like the quilt with the 9 patch.❤❤😊
Amazing video, Fallon! Great tips and beautiful blocks! Love that you show the blocks in the quilts, too!
A great tutorial for beginners. I wish there had been something like this when I was learning.
Fallon, great video for beginners and refresher for intermediate quilters. Thank you.
🎶💐💖🫂
Thank you!
Thank you for this tutorial especially the flying geese.
You’re welcome!
Thank you ! A beginner 😊
Thank you, Fallon! Great tutorial!
I love this video! It was a great reminder on the many uses for each of the blocks! I loved seeing all the quilts you made using them!!!❤
Thank you Laura! I appreciate the support.
Hey Laura! Thanks for watching and hope to see you next Wednesday.
@@FirstHusbandofQuilting I have a personal alarm set just for the live! They are always so much fun! Unfortunately, sometimes I have to watch the replays which are great but the lives are better!❤️
Thank you for your helpful information.
You’re welcome
Excellent video ❤ thanks for taking the time to make it.
Thank you for your kind words!
Thank you for such an informative quilt tutorial!
You’re welcome!
Good basics! Thanks!
You’re welcome!
Thank-you for sharing these
You’re welcome!
Thank you for your detailed instructions! And for talking at a slower pace so we can fully comprehend. This beginner appreciates you!
Very good teaching. !!! It's good you had a mistake to show that it's no big deal.
I try to show mistakes when they happen to show how to fix them!
If mistakes are good, you'd LOVE to see me sew and quilt. 😂
Two tips for log cabin blocks: 1) always add you next piece on the side there are 2 seams. If you are only crossing one seam that is the wrong edge to be adding to 2) sew with the new piece on the bottom, then you can watch the seams so that they won't flip over on you.
I’ve been quilting just for a couple of years now. Even though I have made all of these I loved your tips and how you applied the blocks at the end. I’m watching this as I’m sizing up HSTs for a southwest quilt.
😊thank you, amazing teaching
Thank you Kathy!
Very useful instructions😂!!
Love the log cabin with the flying geese
I love to make flying geese. They are fun.
I do too! You can make so many fun designs using them.
Excellent video, babe! I miss you so much and can't wait to see you!
Thank you! Miss you too!
😊
Great information
Thank you Mona!
Thanks, Mona!
I like the log cabin block. I have not made one yet but I’m going to give it a try soon.
The star log cabin quilt I would love to see how to make it please. ❤
What fabric collection are you using? AWESOME 😊 video Thank You
How much bigger do you cut the original square piece from your fabric so you have the necessary wiggle room to cut the sewn block down to your desired size? I usually add 1/4" on each side. Many times I've cut the pieces to the exact measurements called for in the pattern only to have no wiggle room when I make a mistake. Also, I have a problem when I use a pre-cut kit. No wiggle room whatsoever! I frequently can't use steam nor Best Press as the pieces shrink. I'm going to check out your blog. Great teaching video.
I’m liking that flying geese quilt. But size is hard for me
I understand. You can always make less blocks to make the quilt size more manageable.
Question..... how do you keep the bottom fabric from NOT becoming shorter than the top even when that are the same length when you start ??
This is a good question. This happens because the feed dogs feed the bottom fabric through nice and even but the top fabric doesn’t and can get stretched. Starching helps this and so does pinning. This mainly happens to me on long border pieces or long sashing pieces so I make sure to pin those really well.
I use a walking foot or the dual feed on my machine.
Pinning or clipping the fabrics helps.
@@alexandra-zaza-burns Pinning didn't help mine.
@@janiesoito4494 did you pin the whole way down the seam?
This was a great video
I love the ruler you used with the handle. What kind is it?
Great tutorial! Question, i have several of your square and flying geese trim locks. How do you store them? I have them all in a basket right now, but i have to dig through the jumble to find the right size. And i don't want them getting banged around. May try to find a flat tray or something.
Thank you!
I posted a tutorial showing how to make a wall organizer . The idea works great for the trimlocks! th-cam.com/video/ApEU0MIpPRE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=pmAsmmtEZ9U6sqfN
Thanks! I will check it out!
I used to sew over pins - until the needle broke and a piece flew up and hit my glasses! I thought it was a fluke, until it happened again! I was so happy that I wear glasses, and I no longer sew over pins!
Yes! It takes that one time! They are thin so it doesn’t always happen but it can!
Do you spin your seams on the back to reduce bulk for the longarm?
I only do if many points are meeting in one place, for example, if I am making a pinwheel block then I spin them.
You didn’t explain that the traditional Log Cabin has a reddish colored center block to represent the fireplace of the home… I think that’s important to understand the designer’s objective. And that there is a ‘dark’ value side and a ‘light’ value side to the pattern.
Thank you for watching!
Sewing over a pin in the fabric is rougher on these higher-powered digitally operated machines; I did it and threw my machine out of alignment.
I was like she using the fat quarters out of the open gates box 😅
Yes! They are so pretty!
Why are the seams just 1/4”?
Just a quick comment: "Hearth" is pronounced "harth."
