Brenda Russell is a genius of a singer-songwriter. Get Here made popular by Oleta Adams is another Brenda Russell original. She's written for Broadway as well
Love your taste in music and how diversity is a constant thread on here. Love your content and when your feeling a song you smile and start dancing I love it!
This song is so dark yet beautiful at the same time. It makes me feel like I'm swimming in a deep dark unknown sea in hope of finding a peak of light. Today's music lacks that enchantment. I can't explain it, but the verse of this song is uplifty, but once she sings the "Piano In the Dark" part, the melody of the song becomes dark and gloomy as if the dark cloud of oblivion is before us.
My mother use to play this all the time when I was a kid and I remember even back then being so young, this song grabbed my attention, it’s deep and haunting and beautiful all at the same time
I gotta say this, we love these songs, but the reason we send in our requests is because of you, Jack. Young man, you're good at this. I was waiting for every reaction you gave & you gave it. Keep it up, much ❤❤❤
I remember listening to this song as a kid in the late 80s. Even though I was very young, and this is a fairly sophisticated song, the story it told, and the music arrangements, were all spellbinding. Late 80s R&B is some of the best music out there. Two other really good "nighttime" songs from that era: The Whispers' "Just Gets Better With Time" and Stephanie Mills' "Something in the Way You Make Me Feel." 👍🏾
Nice reaction Jack. She is vastly underrated. Her album, Get Here is classic. The title song is another that you should hear. The same song, by Oleta Adams, is also incredible.
One of my favorite songs of all time. I really appreciate how Jack recognizes great music and knows how to explain exactly what makes it masterful. I saw another person react to this song (a while back) and the person just didn’t get it or have the musical ear or intellect to acknowledge the details that caught Jack’s ear on first listen. So as a huge fans of this song, I just love that Jack got it. ✊🫡 🫶
In her own words, Brenda Russell says this song is about: this woman. Her lover plays piano. And she wants to leave him, because she's really kind of bored. But every time she does that, he sits down and starts playing. And it sucks her right back in. She's so in love with the way he plays. And he plays in the dark, theoretically. It's not that literal, necessarily. But that's what keeps her to him, basically, is his music. And I just found that was an interesting story to write about."
Her first album had several popular songs. One was If Only For One Night. The fabulous Roberta Flack sang it in concert. She also recorded it on a double-disk duet album with Peabo Bryson. One of the background singers on tour with her, and on the album, was Luther Vandross. When he went solo, he then recorded the song as well. (I sang it in a talent show but not nearly as well as any of the singers I mentioned).
There are two songs by the rock band foreigner that have such amazing production values and a smoother R&B sound, and I’ve been dying for you to react to them and they are “waiting for a girl like you” and “I want to know what love is”
This is not a negative comment bc I do think PITD is a great song (and without question, Brenda is talented). That said, I always associate PITD with Lite-FM radiio ie you’ll hear it at your local drugstore chain right after John Waite but before Peter Cetera. Is it just me? 😂✌🏽

Brenda Russell is a genius songwriter and performer in her own right. This song is imo one of the best of the 80's.

Shout out too crobb for this request 🔥🔥🔥🔥 okay CROBB I see u with the request lately
When I hear the bass at the end of the chorus in this song it makes me think of Richard Marx's Hazard.
