I wish that people would stop calling Croatia underdogs, they are not, its obvious that they are a footballing powerhouse nation

They're not a perennial powerhouse, they're too small to be one. But they've always got some great players and they seem to have a "big team" mentality. In 2018 once the draw opened up for them it wasn't a surprise they made the final. Almost their entire XI plus a couple off the bench were at big clubs and playing key roles. For example, they went into the semi-final as betting underdogs despite having a lot more big game experience than England, and a midfield including Modric and Rakitic. Up front Mandzukic, Perisic. A really well balanced team.

I was in Croatia for holidays in 1998. It was an absolute madness. Every time the World Cup match was on, the whole country just stopped.

I think teams like Croatia, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland need to be respected. They are not the strongest but on their best day they can make the biggest of teams sweat playing against them!

I remember a game Croatia vs. Germany like it was yesterday. I was 8. My parents had a guest house in Croatia where we had a lot of German tourists during the summer. At the time, my father worked in Germany, but during the summers, he was in Croatia. On the ground floor, we had a big living room with lot of space. On that night, there were like 15 Germans and 4 Croats, my mother, father, uncle and me watching the game. We celebrated like crazy, so proud while our German guests were sad and confused because they could not understand that such a small country demolished their national team. It gives me goosebumps everytime I think about that! :)

I was 10 years old, my first world cup ever, I was leaving in Brava, Cape Verde Islands. Suker was amazing this team always in my heart 😍 ❤ loved their performance in 98.
Davor Suker was one of my favorite players growing up. He was an elegant attacker with power. Every shot looked easy and it bent in mysterious ways. What a player he was. Great video.
Keep in mind Croatia was missing Alen Boksic who was injured.

You should just see what was happening in Croatia during 2018 WC in Russia. Its so much love for our country that no one have. After a lot of suffer during a war for independence to one of the best sport nations in the world. Proud to be a Croat. 🇭🇷

@@stefanobell1 Croatia would have been world champion if they were not part of Yugoslavia. Croatia played their first ever tournament as independent state in 1996., so in past 24 years we have 3rd and 2nd place from WC while Uruguay has only 1 4th place.

Their first World Cup was in 1998 and they already have reached as many semi finals as Spain in their entire World Cup history
For me 98' and 06' world cups were the best in modern era. Such stacked quality all over at the pinacle of their powers.. 06' wc marked the end of that (passion) era of football and the beggining of the football we see today. Businesses and cash took the soul out of it.
As a Croatian and a football fan I feel blessed that I was able to witness Croatia win bronze and silver in the World Cup, after 1998 I thought that kind of a result will never repeat in my lifetime, but the generation of 2018 went one step further and now I won't tell or think that it is impossible that Croatia will one day become the champion of the world. We dare to dream....

Refs were completely against Croatia in the finals against France, how a dive by griezman was called a free kick only a paid ref could miss. That’s just how it goes in sports, the winner is decided in advance, the rest is history

I agree the pen is a tricky decision, Perisic had not enough time to react behind Matuidi, Pitana couldn't rapidly make his decision, he shouldn't have given the pen.

Started to compete in 1996 at the Euro and achieved a 3rd place 1998 at the World Cup and a 2nd Place at the Worldcup 2018....and several 1/4 finals at European Championships. Not too bad for a country of 4,5 m people and a global diaspora of another 6-7 m Croats. And with Two of the world‘s best Football academies (Hajduk Split‘s Luka Kaliterna football academy and Dinamo Zagreb‘s Hitrec-Kacijan football academy). Both in the Top 10 Football academies worldwide
They surely have not only one or the best youth academies, but the most consistent making it the top 2 in my opinion!

I wouldnt call Croats the underdogs. They were one of the strongest teams in the tournament. Some of their players competed in world cup before with Yugoslavia too, and others were playing for top european teams. Plus this generation was product of super strong Yugoslavian league that gave also club european and world champion in 1991 Red Star. Yugoslavian team was also strong in this competition and lacked just a tiny bit of luck to get in last 8, with Mijatovic hitting the bar from penalty kick against never stronger Dutch team. I really wish Yugoslavia broke apart just 5 years later so we could see that best generation of our football playing one more WC together in their prime. I think they were ready to turn the world football upside down. That and the game of our basketball team against original NBA dream team.. I would give a year of my life just to watch that game happen.
