@Elliot Diego Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process atm. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Hi Micael - Nice video. Firstly these StoFen type diffusers are next to useless for macro photography, and I proved 10 years ago that they're hardly better than the bare flash heads. I invented several solutions for diffusing twin flashes which are now used all around the world, where people have re-designed them for their own particular needs, which is how I intended it. I called it concave diffusion. The 2 options are a curved end of lens diffuser which fits on the bracket. I originally called this a cup diffuser as it was made from a white plastic cup, but I've since found better materials such as diffusion gel, easy to buy off eBay etc. The other type, which is very low profile is the concave diffuser, which is basically an inverted plastic dome in a reflective housing. The plastic needs to be a neutral coloured i.e. white translucent dome, which you can sometimes find on the tops of roll on deodorant/antiperspirant bottles. This old blog testing out my ideas (I am SteB for obvious reasons) demonstrates the principles and the effectiveness of this diffusion. The beauty of the inverted plastic dome is it doesn't shade the subject of foul the vegetation as much as the bigger end of lens diffusers. The link in the article to my original tests didn't work for a long time, but now it's linked to an archive set of my original tests, which demonstrates how poor the StoFen type diffusers are for twin flashes. www.davidkennardphotography.com/blog/238-mt-24ex-macro-flash-diffusers-comparison.xhtml
Thank you for your honesty in your reviews!! Really do appreciate it! LOVE your photography!! Have learned so much in your videos and hope I can learn to apply it effectively!
There are 2 types of diffusers included: 1) a narrower and more clear one, which can hold a gel filter 2) a bigger, more opaque (ala "soft" type) one, which you are using in the video. I think Meike intended (as per manual) for the soft type not to be used alone, but stacked on top of the smaller one instead. Flashes have small protrusions on the sides, and smaller diffuser hooks on them when properly aligned and firmly pressed. Once the smaller diffuser is in place, the soft type fits more tightly and stops coming off by accident that easily.
You mentioned that you have a couple of role models in macro photography? Who are they? Mine certainly are you and Thomas Shahan. You two’s work is absolutely amazing!
Thank you for review. I'm going to buy this device. Couple words about distance: for increase distance from flashes to object you are able to use special holders. Btw, your's pics look pretty good.
I used this for about a month. It's a good, versatile setup, not very cheap but quite a bit cheaper than the alternatives. But for Sony it has quite a few issues. The big ring is blocking the continuous light from the commander. Also the continuous light in the two flashes only lasts about 10 seconds which is frustrating. You barely manage to snap a picture before they turn off. But it has rather fast flashes, much faster than my Godox tt350s. I think a good long lasting right light (not flash) would be a better alternative.
I have used white linen to white socks as diffusers when using other flash units and they have worked quiet well. Those plastic things are worth nothing. But thank you for the review. I will now be getting this flash
Have you tried a dryer sheet or Kleenex tissue? you can try it i did with the canon macro flash and it helps a lot. even if you use tissue on on side kind of gives you a studio effect.
Has someone a similar problem on Nikon D7500 with Meike MK-MT24. When the camera return from standby mode flash is not connected back mostly with the camera, I think is a general issue from Meike flashes. The pictures are great with that flash but Nikon and Meike MK-MT24 are not compatible. I asked them for the last update and readable tool for an update but they are not responsive.
Good morning, Today I buy MEIKE MK-MT 24. I shot maybe 20 pictures and now i have problem: indicator light MK-R 200 flickers green maybe 30 seconds and than off flash. This problem have both flashes. Where is problem? Batery dead? Or I broke flash? Please help me. Thanks for answering Good bye

I don't have this flash but mine has similar type push-on diffusers, I do cut a small piece of paper to fit into the diffuser. Try out one or several, depending on which effect you want. Another possibility is to cut tinted paper or foil putting it into the push-on diffusers. Using the existing diffusers is tidy and easier than any other method. Great videos by the way. Cheers Martin
You need a lot of practice. And make sure the exposure time is 1/250 or faster. Flash is necessary. If an insect sits on a leaf or a branch, hold the branch steady with one hand while taking the photo with the other. Works pretty well. The nice thing is that you will mostly find insects who don't care if the leaf they sit on is shaking, as they have already been sitting on a shaking leaf all day - they will just continue sitting there no matter what happens :)
I'm considering getting one but that support ring seems to protude a lot and would kill my working distance, gonna have to look for support arms on it too
Couldn't you just tape half a cylinder of thin paper as extra diffusion around each flash? Nice video Micael, I often go in the woods myself, but find it hard to find bugs, more often they seem to stick around plants and flowers. The red ladybugs enjoy some of the trees though :)
Any macro lenses for a Nikon that might produce pictures as good (or nearly)for a little less money? If I lay out 300 for the flash rig, I am going to be hurting in the wallet. The reverse ring rig is just not satisfying.
@@Madoxyama yup now that you say it I see... I only saw that it said 90mm on screen. But it should still work with the Sony lens too, maybe with a different step up ring, but these flash units generally are universal
Yeah. I just tried TTL briefly, and it seemed to to the job. Otherwise I always prefer to shoot macro with manual flash settings, which is what I do 99% of the time.
Manual gives best consistency - I use one flash on camera and another on a clamp and a spare in my pocket for backlighting when i'm using a similar Nikon SB-R200 system. At least Meike doesnt use non-standard batteries...
How do you measure exposure with manual flash for macro ? Or do you just bracket exposures ? TTL was invented primarily for macro flash photography because of actual aperture change during magnification.
Hey Micael m nice video I would like to buy my first flash ( not so expensive) an I know nothing about flashes.
