  • Let's try to synthesize bell sounds on the DSI Pro 2 synthesizer. Synthesizing a bell sound involves simulating the response of a metallic object. The best way to achieve this by utilizing frequency modulation. In this patch we get both large church bells as wells as little bells like a glockenspiel.

I dont even own a pro 2 and this was enjoyable to watch lol. these videos are very well put together - audio, camera angle, lighting, even the table cloth the synth is sitting on. great job man.

Just discovered your hugely appreciated tutorials. Thanks so much for your musicianly approach to DSI Pro 2 sound design. By far the best tutorials I've seen for this perplexing instrument.

I followed along with my P12 and am having fun switching between liar and exponential FM modes - - thanks for the tutorial!

You're welcome! I wish DSI adds linear FM to the Pro 2 as well.. luck you lol

DSI instruments are a few of the synths that can do a convincing steal drum sound.

Nice~! Some of those bell tones were spot on. Something that I always consider is using envelopes to make sure low frequencies ring out longer than high ones. Also, while tremolo will naturally occur as different frequencies beat, sometimes adding a bit of tremolo with an LFO can emphasize that. By the way, does the Pro 2 feature linear FM? I know the P12 does-- that might be the source of drastically different timbres between octaves on the keyboard

Thanks for the tip, I haven't considered tremolo on bells but I'll give it a shot. Unfortunately they haven't added linear FM to the Pro 2 :(. I'm not sure if it's a deliberate decision or some limitation of the architecture. Thanks for watching!

FM is crazy. Sometimes I will be making a patch with FM and I will start hearing modulations inside modulations and think it is amazing. Then I play that sound along with the rest of the track and will realize it just sounds utterly bizarre.

lol yeah agreed, FM (especially the non-integer exponential variety) is always tricky to integrate into musical contexts.

Using analog subtractive synthesis you can get a convincing bell without fm by simply adding some harmonic dissonance and then contouring a model of the bell strike with vcf and vca. If you have ring modulation you can add it to produce an even more real bell sound. Finish it up with delay and you're set.

I am new to synth, is there a synth that would record a real sound and then minipulate it? like a dog bark or bell

If I wanted to learn sound design inside and out well enough for me to make something from my imagination where would I turn? The operator’s manual or google/TH-cam?

this is pretty much DX7 Bells right?

yup, it should be the same technique for any basic FM synth.
