DSI PRO 2 PAD PATCH SOUND DESIGN TUTORIAL ~ Synthesize This! Ep.22

  • How to make a pad patch from scratch on the Dave Smith Instruments Pro 2 synthesizer. The Pro 2 is a paraphonic synth so in order to play chords we need to sacrifice the oscillators. This means we are left with just one oscillator per "voice". In order to make the sound thicker and more interesting we will rely on various techniques and modulation options.

    Incredible sound.. I just picked up a Mopho X4 with a Tetra this week and grateful you have such stellar videos to learn from. Thanks for all the effort, I've learned a ton!

    You do such a good job with these tutorial videos. You have reinvigorated me to design my own patches on the Prophet 08 and Ultranova! I try to add dynamic movement to pitch, volume, and timbre as much as I can. Especially when they are a pad-type sound. The modulation possibilities are very dynamic on the Pro-2! I always set the LFOs up to change the sound and then run them with an envelope or the mod wheel to add more complexity.

    Hi i just got the rev2 and was wondering if you can reach these sort of sounds with it?

    Beautifully done as always : ) Could you perhaps do a video on the modulation capabilities of the Pro 2? I for one would love to see your take on it.

      Thanks! Thanks for the suggestion. I've got some other videos in the pipeline but I'll add this to the list!

    Fantastic design tutorial as usual. What reverb were you using?
    Would love to see you do a video on paraphonic sequencing design. Or just more pro 2 sequencer stuff in general :D

      Thanks. The reverb was ValhallaDSP VintageVerb (or maybe Room, I can't remember). Thanks for the suggestion, I'll put it in my pipeline.

      i would also be up for paraphonic sequencing and more pro 2 tutorials in general. thanks bro love your stuff.

      So this not all the synth? there is a software or hardware reverb being used?

    • @fray3dendsofsanity
      @fray3dendsofsanity 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@djleighl He said that it's a software reverb, Valhalla DSP VintageVerb. Also, he's only using reverb when it says "external reverb added" which is only the last portion of the video. 95% of the sound is most certainly the synth, he didn't go super crazy with the reverb even when it was applied.

    very nice pads, good stuff i am trying to decide between this and the matrixbrute ......can this sequencer do per step clock divide? in same sequence have 1/4 notes and 32nd notes for example.....

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't believe so. I think you just have master control over clock and clock divide.

    • @indiefilmcomposer
      @indiefilmcomposer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      once upon a synth interesting, if the master clock control can modulated then we could achieve the clock divide effect i am looking for

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't see the tempo/clock in the list of possible destinations so I don't think it's possible. You could try changing the tempo via an external MIDI clock and modulate the tempo of the incoming clock using some other hardware or software, but that is probably pretty cumbersome. You can also control the clock divide parameter via MIDI CC so you could have an external MIDI controller modulate that param.

    meaning you cant make the different notes be different waveforms in paraphonic mode? a shame, thought theyd have a high note/low note priority of some sort

      Both. One can't replace the other, only enhance it. If only one... The pro 2. I love mine.
