i wish i had seen this vid before i did my replacement. this vid was so efficient and sensible especially with taking the door lock whilst connected to the inner door bowl(skin). . best vid on youtube.
Would like to echo the sentiments of many others who have seen this video. Managed to change the door lock mechanism exactly as shown. Although happy with most routine engine/brake servicing would never have tried this without seeing your video which gave all the info you need to complete the job. Saved me a fortune! Please keep this video on line, I suspect many others will need this in the future. Many thanks William!!
Property Market Insider Hey, thanks for the kind words! I will of course leave it up. I am glad it can be of help to some in saving some money, every bit helps these days!
Thank you so much for that hint at 4:50! Saved me a lot of work. In my car the problem was that the two bolts securing the lock to the door were too tight: they're supposed to be tighten to 20 Nm, too tight may cause the dead-bolt function to jam. Which is exactly what happened. But with this trick I got the door open, corrected the torque of the bolts and now everything works. Thank you!
I think Im more comforted by the fact that Im prob not the only golf owner who has frantically pressed the key fob and the internal locking buttons to try and get doors to open. Its a complete gamble as to whether the rear drivers side door or the front passenger door will open/lock!? Hats off to taking all that effort. My only concern would be getting it all back how it came out! Cheers from u.k
Very good video. Best one I have found on internet after five days of looking. I will follow your video now after starting what appears to be a very difficult operation. Thanks.
Hi, so I ordered and got the part in. Followed your instructions and the new locking mechanism is now in. As my door was in the stuck/ locked closed position it would not open. The two screws at the bottom acceded from inside when back driver side door was closed took me hours to unscrew. Than it too what must of been am hour to get the door to open, after many many many attempts at knocking the door. I was going to give up and pay VW £550+ (they said min 550 but they charge £170/hr what a rip offf, and they could not give me a fixed time and hence a fixed price) to doo it. After going away and coming back to it my lock kicked in and the door opened. After that followed your vid and it all works great. Thank you so much. You saved me a lot. In uk all cars must have yearly check up and the stuck door would fail the car and hence ban it from the roads. So very happy I got it fixed. Thank you so much.
This was exceptionally helpful. Thank you. Amplifying what others gave said, I love driving VW cars - but all of the stupid problems I've experienced over the years makes me want to avoid buying another VW ever again, or recommend them to anyone else.
@@big-R Door locks are all the same. Only difference is with or without central locking mechanism. Repairing a Golf IV is usually not fun. Therefore I would not recommend one, when you are looking for an easy to repair car.
This possibly the best video car repair I have seen. Absolutely complete with no supurfluous nonsence or missed bits either. WELL DONE. Sorry about the spelling.
Thank You for your time making this video! I have the exact same issue with my VW Golf 4 as you had. My back left door was deadlocked from 2014 (I didn't use it). I had no knowledge how to disassemble everything to get to the lock mechanism. There are more similar videos on TH-cam but Your video is the best showing how to do everything right way. Recently my car's right back door lock started showing signs that it may deadlock aswell. So I left my car unlocked. Getting to repear it right now. All I have to do, is to find 5mm bolt that screws into middle grommet to take out the window. Thanks again!
Thanks William, much appreciated!!! Just fixed my lock. Quick fyi for Bora/Jetta (EU) owners: door lock is Spline M8, door handle is Torx 20, there are different lock modules for pre 2001-6 cars and later build cars, so make sure to order the correct one. Only issue for me was my electric window did not come up anymore, seemed stuck, fixed it by putting the carrier half way and than click in the window. Thanks again for this vid!!
Thank you for your video, So clearly shot and explained, it was like having a mate with me to guide me through the process...Twice as it happened... as resoldering the joint in the original lock meant the lock worked, but the rod & button didn't. Which seemed to be down to a tiny bit of damage to one of the gears in the lock, so replaced the lock for a second go and its all good now.
Mate, your a bloody LEGEND! I just looked this video up cause my front passenger door has just stopped opening, not from the inside or outside but you can see the nobbly bit go up and down... weird. I'm gonna try this and see if it works. Thanks for all the help, keep up the good work 👍
Michael De Vito hey thanks mate! Haven't done a front door but from what I read they should be much the same. Good luck, I'll be ditching my golf soon!
Very, very informative video thank you so much. I like the fact that you spoke very calmly and explained everything in good detail. No background music like I've seen in many other videos. From our family Thank you so much you have saved us a fortune.👌😎🚘🚗
You Sir are a bloody diamond!! Saved us a lot of money. Taken me a fair while to get it done, but another job done and all under £20! Definitely owe you a few rounds mate!
Thank you so much for posting this William! I know you posted this a while ago but I was able to follow your video step by step and was able to swap out the door mechanism for a new one. Now my rear door is functioning properly again! You’re the best! Happy New Year!
What a helpful and thorough video, thanks for all your effort in preparing a top tutorial. Rear right passenger door now locks but when I unlock the car with one press this door opens as well as the drivers door whereas the other two doors and hatch require the two presses. Is there any way of rectifying this. Possible re-programming?
Your vid is simply excellent and gave me the necessary info and confidence to replace the broken mechanism. A superb step by step guide which is brilliantly delivered and contains the detail required to complete the job without breaking anything. I would never have attempted this without your vid, and of all of them out there on this topic, yours IS THE BEST by far. Thank you, you're a diamond!!
Brilliant, thank you for an exceptional video the helped me to understand what I missed in trying to take out the lock actuator and ended up stuck= tomorrow will be successful
Thanks for posting this up, great video tutorial. Did mine the other day and it's still misbehaving; I have a fault code of "intermittent communication with locking module" on that door but after disturbing the multiplug in the door pillar it's improved slightly so must have a broken wire or something in that general area. Still the module only cost £17 on ebay so no great loss and this vid helped immeasurably, will get this sorted eventually, thanks again!!
Great video - many thanks for posting. I just fixed my wife's Mk4 VW Golf's rear left lock. It often popped back up (to the unlocked state) after locking which has annoyed me for years. The fault was a dry solder joint inside the locking mechanism.
No worries at all, I am glad I could help so many people, wasn't expecting it to popular to be honest! I have heard that the solder in the mechanism goes and causes a lot of issues on these.
Thanksalot! Best Tutorial i found (after a long research)! After getting everything disassembled i had to destroy the lock , see mutetouretteshimself but now i can change this. Also helpful were some the comments, thanks here too.
THANKS SO MUCH. Your video helped out so much. I have the manual but the drawings were terrible. I could make heads or tails out of some of them. Your video is very comprehensive as well.
Yeh this vid has been awesome, Ive replaced mine today but did struggle getting the whole thing back in place as the plastic retainer didnt clip in quite right! Then theres the tiny door cable OMG what a faff trying to get that to make an appearance! On last attempt before losing it before my nightshift I achieved it. However window still an issue so just taped on some plastic - if only id watched ahead I now can see you must insert those plastic gromets first! ahhh! lol Getting there will complete tomorrow ;)
Hey mate, yep sure was a mission! That's why I made the vid. I'm glad it's been so useful to so many 🙂 almost lost it a few times myself during the process 🤣. All the best!
Thanks to this video I was able to replace my lock. I did have to drill through the door from the inside in order to unlock it though as it would not budge otherwise.
William, and others looking in, can you say where you bought the new locking mechanism. You mentioned Ebay, but it would be helpful if you could be more precise - with a clue if you can't fully name the source. The video is the most useful I've seen. Precise and very well recorded. Well done!
Hi Mike, thanks for the kind words. It was some time ago unfortunately so I can't be terribly specific, I remember just searching for a mk4 locking mechanism, and then matching it to the one I had removed. Hopefully someone else can be more specific!
Very informative video thanks for posting this my mk1 TT has this problem on the drivers side. Thankfully it doesnt have that extra shield inside the door.
Very nice video!!! Can you tell me what tools are used in this video and where can i find them? I'm interested in the ratchet with its extensions. Thank you.
Hi mate, it was so long ago I can't remember that well, but I believe it was just a combination of screw drivers and a socket set, any hardware or auto supplies store should have them. The only but that I had to buy extra was a spline bit. Hope that helps!
Thanks for that, very useful. I did find a bit of a shortcut however.. I found you don't need to remove the strip along the top of the door, or the upright strip. When you've separated the window glass from the holder you can just wedge the glass into it's place at top of the door (a couple of doorstops wedged between the glass & the door might be useful to keep it in there). Then, if you remove the bolt at the bottom of the upright strip, there's enough wriggle room to get the mechanism past the upright strip. Simples :-)
The plastic part that had to removed from the old lock and attached to the new lock with a screw and nut. Is that part available for sale somewhere? My part was destroyed. Great job on the video!!
William, please, did you find out how it is possible that both locks break at the same time? I have the same problem. One day the first lock broke, the next day it stopped working the next. If I had to guess, I would say that there will be a problem in the control unit, but it is probably necessary to replace the locks. Can you tell me something about that?
Hi Matej. Sorry, I really am not sure! It could be the control unit, but then all four doors might stop working? I had one fail, fixed it, then soon after another one failed. It could be yours just happen to fail at the same time. Sorry I can't be more help, the car is long since gone!
Nice work mate , i'm about to attempt this procedure on my 2002 mk4 , 1 deadlocked door right side and 1 faulty solder joint on left one , btw was your actuator motor still working on the deadlocked door , or there was no sound and banging on it brought the motor back to life with a little luck? There isn't any sound coming from mine so i might have to smash the lock to pieces if luck isn't on my side .
Hey mate, yeah such a pain these door locks and a very common problem I found! Poor design too if you ask me. On the deadlocked one I couldn't hear any actuation until I hit it. It was as if there was a loose connection inside the mechanism and banging it got it to work eventually. It did take a while though when hitting it. Good luck with yours!
Great video, i have been looking rear door disassembly video. I think im gonna try and repair the solder joints inside that famously fail, pretty sure that's the problem as everything works other than the intermittent central looking problem.
Thanks Paul, appreciate the comment. That sounds like it could be the issue, I also read about people repairing the solder inside the mechanism but wasn't game enough to try that myself. With the hassle of disassembling the door I opted for a new mechanism so I (hopefully) don't have to do it again in a hurry. Good luck with your fix!
Yeah, it seems to have either been straightforward faulty door modules causing a range of locking issues, or bad solder joints or even faulty microswitches that tell the car whether the door is closed or not. MK4's mainly affected, but also believe other marks were affected too.
Do you know what search words to use when buying new plastic thingies? I have the same problem you did with the locking mecanism dead, but on the right side instead. Hope to fix this problem this weekend
Hey there, did you mean the plastic clips that hold on the door trim? Here is a link to some I found on e-bay: is.gd/BJvzfU Hope that helps, good luck with your fix!
Hi, great video. I have a similar problem with my golf IV, i took it all apart today. The problem was that when i took out the first part of the door handle, (by loosening the torx from the back of the door) this metallic half mooned formed thing feel down. I have no idea how to put it back in place. The function of this is holding the last door-handle-part in its place.. like the only thing that wasn't showed in the video, do you have any tips for me? I cant get the last part you put back to stick in its place..
Hey, thanks for the question. I have long since moved on from vw's, so haven't messed with the doors for a while. Is the torx screw still there? It's possible this was unscrewed too far and fell down, dislodging something else? Sorry I can't be more helpful
Hi bud, You mentioned that if you unplug the lock module you can still use the door, does this allow you to still manually lock it if needed? cheers, Martyn
Martyn Long thanks for the comment. It's been a while since I did this one, but from memory if you unplug the module and it is working fine mechanically it should still work. Once unplugged you should be able to test before reassembling in any case, hope that helps!
what are those rubber things for ? the one at the lever that goes up and down when opening closing and the one at the lever that you pull to open the door. My vw has both of them small size like the one you have at the up/down lever. The rubber from my car is damaged at the up/down lever. Should i cange it? From what i saw the door lock module is water proof and the only purpose that i see of this rubbers is to protect the levers from touching the metal parts. What do you think?
They look to me to just be a grommet that helps guide the rods. I guess without them the rods could potentially rub against the metal. I am unsure if it will work without them Though I don't see why not. You should test it before assembling the door again! Unfortunately, I am not an expert! Hope that helps.
ty for fast reply. well its not entirely destroyed it just has a small "cut" so i guess it can stay like that ;) the base of it where it can rub on metal i dont think its breakeable due to normal use. also the up/down lever is hold by the door plastic so i dont think it can rub the door metal anyway. if i found out something diffeerent i will let you know too. ty again
Hey when i try to open the car manually with my keys, the key now keeps going round and round and won't lock. When I press the buttons, only the alarm system turns on and off but the lock itself does not go up and down... Anything you can suggest?
Hi Sherry, thanks for the question. I never had to pull apart the drivers door so I am not too familiar with the lock there. (Unfortunately I am just a tinkerer and have long since sold the VW) However it seems there is definitely something broken if your key spins round and round in the lock. Perhaps someone else out there might have some answers? Sorry I can't be of more help!
Hi William, how do I know the part number to order - is there a part reference for left hand rear door, 2002 M2 VW Golf 2L New NZ? Where would I find it?
Hey there, not too sure on the part number, but they are (as far as I know) the same across the entire MK4 Golf range. Here is a link to one on Ebay, is.gd/X12xKf If you scroll to the bottom it has a list of all compatible models and there are a stack of 2002 there so you should find yours. Hope that helps!
Thanks William, I try that. Is there a way of removing the inner door panel while the door is still closed as I cant open it. I tried you technique of using a screwdriver through the hole but with no joy.
Hmmm... that's a tricky one as the inner panel has the window carrier etc attached to it, and getting the window out while its shut would be a no go I think... does the mechanism make any sounds at all when trying to unlock it? Sorry I can't think of anything else off the top of my head, but will keep thinking about it for you!
hey brother nice to know a kiwi posted this also have similar issue it opens fine with fob goes up but doesnt lock go down if place.my finger with slight pressure and use the fob to lock and goes down down with it .. every time that way.. what do you think I need to do.. you on fb cheers bro from Auckland also.
Hmm, not 100% sure. Does it move at all when locking? Seems strange that it would move with a little bit of pressure. Could be that there is a loose connection or something sticking / catching in the mechanism. Sorry I can't be of more help!
Hi Ricardo, no sorry! It was a while ago that I did this and I looked at countless forums and other you tube videos to get bits and pieces of information. Sorry I can't be of more help, but Google is your friend! :)
Hey, apologies for the late reply. Torx screw. Its similar to an allen key but has more of a star pattern as opposed to the standard hexagonal allen key. You should be able to buy a set from your hardware or auto parts store!
MBMone Hey mate, yep I never had an issue with the window fortunately... don't want to have to replace that as well! Though a lot of the steps for that would be similar I would imagine
Thanks. for video, but next time would be graet to cut out things like screwing screws out of doors, so the video could be much shorter and more enjoying.
EnkiXIII thanks. Yeah, fortunately I never had an issue with the rear hatch. I'm sure you can find it on eBay and hopefully there's a tutorial out there for it! Good luck
Amazing video. Thanks very much for your help. Also, for people who can't get their door to open, instead of banging through the hole with a screwdriver I applied an emergency power supply as per this link: uk-mkivs.net/topic/91344-opening-door-lock-actuator-from-inside-the-door-skin/ It worked first time! Again, thanks for the video, it was very clear.
Sure is... had some transmission issues as well, as have others I have spoken to. Some others have newer VWs that also have trans problems and burn through oil... its as if they have lost some quality control in recent years. That said it is a nice car to drive and is well built (aside from its faults...) I am however never buying euro again...
Jose Vereda appreciate the comment mate, but yes, you do have to remove it. The glass is literally in front of the mechanism and the carrier is attached to the door skin. I suggest you take another look before attempting.
Our Golf is not ready to retire and now has a working rear door lock thanks to this very good and informative video! Cheers!

Hello There. A brilliant video, so detailed, many thanks. Regards. RichardA.
Thank you so much for all the information and the video, fantastic you made me so happy, would never have achieved this repair, many many thanks
No worries at all, glad it could be of help!
Thanks very useful vid. Now need to order parts and build up the courage to swap it out.
Good luck! I'm sure you'll get it done.
The plastic part that had to removed from the old lock and attached to the new lock with a screw and nut. Is that part available for sale somewhere? My part was destroyed.
Great job on the video!!
Hi mate, not too sure, it was so long ago that I did this! Perhaps you can fabricate something out of aluminium? Hope you get it fixed!
Thanks for the response! I’m going to the junkyard to salvage a replacement. Take care!
I found a couple of videos more but this one was the best. Gracias fue de mucha ayuda.
Hey thanks, glad it can help!
It was a great video
I fix it.
Thank you for you motivation
I’m doing this right now,
What about the spring that you didn’t swap over? Do you not need it?
You can see it at 16:12
Prima! Vielen Dank für das informative Video, es hat mir wirklich weitergeholfen.
Great! Thank You for the informative video, it really helped me.
Nice video Willian, do you have to remove the glass if your fixing the front passenger door lock?
HI Mikael, thanks for the comment. I believe you do, very similar to the rear. It really is a pain...
Great vid. Havn't tried mine yet but vid deserves a like
Thanks Rashid, appreciate it. Good luck with yours!
thanks for doing this video will, very helpful .
Bruv this video saved me from ripping my hair out most informative and helpful and in english🤦🏼👍👍👍
No worries mate. Was a long time ago, glad it can help so many, even now!
Great video thanks. a lot of help.
The part you did at 12:03, when putting this back, to clear things up
Hey, thanks for the question. I have long since moved on from vw's, so haven't messed with the doors for a while. Is the torx screw still there? It's possible this was unscrewed too far and fell down, dislodging something else? Sorry I can't be more helpful
My 2010 plate vw caddy rear side door seems to be dead locked 😖
Hi bud,
You mentioned that if you unplug the lock module you can still use the door, does this allow you to still manually lock it if needed?
cheers,
Martyn
Martyn Long thanks for the comment. It's been a while since I did this one, but from memory if you unplug the module and it is working fine mechanically it should still work. Once unplugged you should be able to test before reassembling in any case, hope that helps!
thanks for this tutorial, it was verry helpful for me today!
No worries at all mate, glad it could be of help!
Thx for that tutorial. 👍🏾
Hi William, what are the technical names for those door brackets that break when you open the door trimming? Just so I can find these on eBay
Hey, if you search 'door panel trim clip golf mk4' that should bring them up :)
how did the lock mecanism cost about?
what are those rubber things for ? the one at the lever that goes up and down when opening closing and the one at the lever that you pull to open the door.
Hope that helps.
ty for fast reply. well its not entirely destroyed it just has a small "cut" so i guess it can stay like that ;) the base of it where it can rub on metal i dont think its breakeable due to normal use. also the up/down lever is hold by the door plastic so i dont think it can rub the door metal anyway. if i found out something diffeerent i will let you know too. ty again
3mariusx Sounds like a plan! Good luck with your fix.
Just a brilliant vid. Thank you for making it.F
Franco DiRoma thanks, I'm really glad it could be of help to someone!
Thanks William, appreciate your help on this. The unit does not appear to be making any sound when using the key but the window mechanism still works.
hey brother nice to know a kiwi posted this also have similar issue it opens fine with fob goes up but doesnt lock go down if place.my finger with slight pressure and use the fob to lock and goes down down with it .. every time that way.. what do you think I need to do.. you on fb cheers bro from Auckland also.
Hmm, not 100% sure. Does it move at all when locking? Seems strange that it would move with a little bit of pressure. Could be that there is a loose connection or something sticking / catching in the mechanism. Sorry I can't be of more help!
I replaced the drivers door one and it was a nightmare. When the rear one went, I just left it 😄
Hwllo Wiliam, do you still have the link to the forum you mentioned?
Hi Ricardo, no sorry! It was a while ago that I did this and I looked at countless forums and other you tube videos to get bits and pieces of information. Sorry I can't be of more help, but Google is your friend! :)
Is a 'toks screw' an Alankey (sorry im in the UK) dont know what you mean
Hey, apologies for the late reply. Torx screw. Its similar to an allen key but has more of a star pattern as opposed to the standard hexagonal allen key. You should be able to buy a set from your hardware or auto parts store!
+William Booth Great thanks sir. bless you! :-)
No worries, blessings to you too!
hey bro how about the window it was working or no?
MBMone Hey mate, yep I never had an issue with the window fortunately... don't want to have to replace that as well! Though a lot of the steps for that would be similar I would imagine
top man doing this tomorrow very helpful guide.
Tom Leyland Thanks, hope it helps, good luck!
Hi my car is audi A4 2004 drive door doesn't open from inside and outside
So glad old mate next door eventually got his lawn mowed.
Haha, indeed... need to get those things done in-between the downpours!
Muito legal foi muito útil para mi
very nice it was useful for me
Solo faltó ver cómo entró la pieza nueva vi qe no le puso un soporte o base de la pieza nueva
Thanks. for video, but next time would be graet to cut out things like screwing screws out of doors, so the video could be much shorter and more enjoying.
Todo muy bien explicado muchas gracias aver si alguien lo puede poner traducir por lo de más muchas gracias 😊
The way I did it, i just plugged off cabeles from the door near hinges and I lock it and unlock it manually
nice! but i need the mechanism of the back door
EnkiXIII thanks. Yeah, fortunately I never had an issue with the rear hatch. I'm sure you can find it on eBay and hopefully there's a tutorial out there for it! Good luck
Same problem on Ibiza 6l....i try this !!!!
Thanks
No worries, hope it helps.
You make it look so easy?!
Kris B-Lynch ha, thanks... I have done it more than once, got it down to a fine art!
I think it was easier to replace my TDI motor than it is to fix that latch
Amazing video. Thanks very much for your help.
Also, for people who can't get their door to open, instead of banging through the hole with a screwdriver I applied an emergency power supply as per this link: uk-mkivs.net/topic/91344-opening-door-lock-actuator-from-inside-the-door-skin/
It worked first time! Again, thanks for the video, it was very clear.
Hey, thanks for the kind words, just happy it could be of help! And great advice for any others struggling with the stuck lock!
lo mas importante, montar el pasador que suejeta la ventana , no lo dice
Thanks for the comment. It certainly is important. Around 23:15 I mention about reinserting the plastic pins. Hope the video was helpful!
Bravo
i am heavi impressed! please change it for me!!!!!!!!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks Gabor! I would certainly give you a hand if we were neighbours 🙂. But I am sure you will succeed!
great very helpful .
Thanks William booth (y)
No worries mate.
Muy bueno. Gracias.
No problem mate, thanks!
its pain in the arse to replace that mechanism. Now i understand why the mechanic wants some good money to fix it :)
Indeed, it is rather time consuming! Still, not too difficult if you have the time and tools.
Exactly what I meant :D
This is a stupid common problem....if i knew i wud never have bought this stupid car...lol! * Love it really :-)
Sure is... had some transmission issues as well, as have others I have spoken to. Some others have newer VWs that also have trans problems and burn through oil... its as if they have lost some quality control in recent years. That said it is a nice car to drive and is well built (aside from its faults...) I am however never buying euro again...
👍
Good video but did not need to remove the glass or the guide.
Jose Vereda appreciate the comment mate, but yes, you do have to remove it. The glass is literally in front of the mechanism and the carrier is attached to the door skin. I suggest you take another look before attempting.
This is not a fix, this is a replace.
But helpful on disambling the doors, tho.. just inacurate title.. lol sorry.. :D
Well, if it comes to replace, then it's usefull. If it comes to fix it's useless.
