Golf Mk4 Door Lock Mechanism Fix
มุมมอง 405K8 ปีที่แล้ว
Here is a vid I made on fixing VW Golf Mk4 door locking mechanisms, or rather replacing them. Seems to be a common problem. I also went through getting a deadlocked door open. Hope it helps some people, of course attempt at your own risk, I don't claim to be a mechanic!
Fishing in Auckland

A day out fishing on the Hauraki in Auckland, near Rangitoto Island. My first play with the GoPro Hero HD and first attempt at putting together a vid.
Piha Timelapse
มุมมอง 19312 ปีที่แล้ว
Night timelapse video shot at Piha beach in Auckland, New Zealand. The large hill you see is none other than Lion Rock. Left the white balance on auto... will know for next time. Also some annoying headlights mixing up the foreground, but I wanted to shoot it somewhere I could sit in my car! Comments welcome :D
Night timelapse test
มุมมอง 4712 ปีที่แล้ว
Just a test for a night time timelapse. The filter on my lens started getting condensation on it toward the end so that is something learned from this one! Need to keep the lens warm :)
Rangitoto Sunrise - Night to day timelapse
มุมมอง 60812 ปีที่แล้ว
Still working on timelapse movies. This one is a sunrise over the dormant Rangitoto Volcano. It starts off a bit quick due to the longer shutter speeds and then slows down. On the next one I think I will try not to adjust the shutter to maintain a steady interval and just use the ISO settings to account for light variation.
Timelapse Test - Day to Night
มุมมอง 29012 ปีที่แล้ว
Day to night timelapse, edited with lrtimelapse and lightroom. My first real attempt, a few jumps in there I know. Please comment, let me know what you think! Manual mode, began with ISO 200, 1/60 f5.6. Increased the iso incrementally (stopped at 1600) then the shutter toward the end. Began with 5 second interval, increased to 10 in the end. Manual colour temp, 5100K.

The first short I have put together as a test with my new camera. In truth it is my first attempt at anything video related. Shot with a Canon 60D and a kit 18-55 lens, all handheld and edited in iMovie. The soundtrack is Debussy's Arabesque.
I think it was easier to replace my TDI motor than it is to fix that latch
Our Golf is not ready to retire and now has a working rear door lock thanks to this very good and informative video! Cheers!
I replaced the drivers door one and it was a nightmare. When the rear one went, I just left it 😄
Thx for that tutorial. 👍🏾
If you want to punish your enemy: make him repair a VW. Absolutely awful. 😤
Very good video. Best one I have found on internet after five days of looking. I will follow your video now after starting what appears to be a very difficult operation. Thanks.
Todo muy bien explicado muchas gracias aver si alguien lo puede poner traducir por lo de más muchas gracias 😊
i wish i had seen this vid before i did my replacement. this vid was so efficient and sensible especially with taking the door lock whilst connected to the inner door bowl(skin). . best vid on youtube.
Me to :). I went to the wreakers to see how it was put together before attempting it
Brilliant, thank you for an exceptional video the helped me to understand what I missed in trying to take out the lock actuator and ended up stuck= tomorrow will be successful
G, day William, thank you for posting this it's been a God send to sort out my Golf. 👍👍
Hi Mark, glad it's helped so many! Season's greetings to you 😁
Bravo
Hello There. A brilliant video, so detailed, many thanks. Regards. RichardA.
Thank you for your video, So clearly shot and explained, it was like having a mate with me to guide me through the process...Twice as it happened... as resoldering the joint in the original lock meant the lock worked, but the rod & button didn't. Which seemed to be down to a tiny bit of damage to one of the gears in the lock, so replaced the lock for a second go and its all good now.
It’s easyer to dismantle the engine 😂
Muito legal foi muito útil para mi very nice it was useful for me
This is the best I’ve seen on how to do something on your car properly , simple instructions and good camera work . Thank you 👍
definitely the best
Definitely vert Bad engineering 😡😬
Great video thanks. a lot of help.
It was a great video I fix it. Thank you for you motivation
Very nice video!!! Can you tell me what tools are used in this video and where can i find them? I'm interested in the ratchet with its extensions. Thank you.
Hi mate, it was so long ago I can't remember that well, but I believe it was just a combination of screw drivers and a socket set, any hardware or auto supplies store should have them. The only but that I had to buy extra was a spline bit. Hope that helps!
This is not a fix, this is a replace.
But helpful on disambling the doors, tho.. just inacurate title.. lol sorry.. :D
Thank you so much for posting this William! I know you posted this a while ago but I was able to follow your video step by step and was able to swap out the door mechanism for a new one. Now my rear door is functioning properly again! You’re the best! Happy New Year!
Hey Edwin, glad that it could be of help to so many! Happy new year to you too!
Thankyou so much you explained everything in a nice and slow simple manner, absolutely easy to follow because of the above advice, faultless.
I think Im more comforted by the fact that Im prob not the only golf owner who has frantically pressed the key fob and the internal locking buttons to try and get doors to open. Its a complete gamble as to whether the rear drivers side door or the front passenger door will open/lock!? Hats off to taking all that effort. My only concern would be getting it all back how it came out! Cheers from u.k
Solo faltó ver cómo entró la pieza nueva vi qe no le puso un soporte o base de la pieza nueva
Thank you so much for that hint at 4:50! Saved me a lot of work. In my car the problem was that the two bolts securing the lock to the door were too tight: they're supposed to be tighten to 20 Nm, too tight may cause the dead-bolt function to jam. Which is exactly what happened. But with this trick I got the door open, corrected the torque of the bolts and now everything works. Thank you!
Bruv this video saved me from ripping my hair out most informative and helpful and in english🤦🏼👍👍👍
No worries mate. Was a long time ago, glad it can help so many, even now!
Yeh this vid has been awesome, Ive replaced mine today but did struggle getting the whole thing back in place as the plastic retainer didnt clip in quite right! Then theres the tiny door cable OMG what a faff trying to get that to make an appearance! On last attempt before losing it before my nightshift I achieved it. However window still an issue so just taped on some plastic - if only id watched ahead I now can see you must insert those plastic gromets first! ahhh! lol Getting there will complete tomorrow ;)
Hey mate, yep sure was a mission! That's why I made the vid. I'm glad it's been so useful to so many 🙂 almost lost it a few times myself during the process 🤣. All the best!
i am heavi impressed! please change it for me!!!!!!!!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks Gabor! I would certainly give you a hand if we were neighbours 🙂. But I am sure you will succeed!
William, please, did you find out how it is possible that both locks break at the same time? I have the same problem. One day the first lock broke, the next day it stopped working the next. If I had to guess, I would say that there will be a problem in the control unit, but it is probably necessary to replace the locks. Can you tell me something about that?
Hi Matej. Sorry, I really am not sure! It could be the control unit, but then all four doors might stop working? I had one fail, fixed it, then soon after another one failed. It could be yours just happen to fail at the same time. Sorry I can't be more help, the car is long since gone!
how did the lock mecanism cost about?
My 2010 plate vw caddy rear side door seems to be dead locked 😖
👍
only attempt this if youve got the patience of a saint, or you will end up setting fire to the car!!!! lol
Thank you for your help, I would like to give a precision. You can use a flat screwdriver to open the door using the hole at left side in your video. You must insert your screwdriver from the top to down in order to take the plastic AND metallic element. And push them together to the top using your screwdriver. Hence the door will open it. Thank you very much for your vidéo. You can also follow on twitch : randomthingytank
Very, very kind of you to make this video for us Used Golf owners! :P Cheers /Adam, Stockholm
No worries at all, I am glad it could be of help to so many! Stay safe out there :)
The plastic part that had to removed from the old lock and attached to the new lock with a screw and nut. Is that part available for sale somewhere? My part was destroyed. Great job on the video!!
Hi mate, not too sure, it was so long ago that I did this! Perhaps you can fabricate something out of aluminium? Hope you get it fixed!
Thanks for the response! I’m going to the junkyard to salvage a replacement. Take care!
Thank you so much, your passion and effort have benefited me greatly. I'll be sure to pass it on. Now to that brew. Job done.
Glad you got it sorted! 😊
I’m doing this right now, What about the spring that you didn’t swap over? Do you not need it?
You can see it at 16:12
thanks for doing this video will, very helpful .
Your vid is simply excellent and gave me the necessary info and confidence to replace the broken mechanism. A superb step by step guide which is brilliantly delivered and contains the detail required to complete the job without breaking anything. I would never have attempted this without your vid, and of all of them out there on this topic, yours IS THE BEST by far. Thank you, you're a diamond!!
Thanks for the kind comments. I am glad that is has been able to help so many people! Glad you got it fixed. All the best.
Hi, so I ordered and got the part in. Followed your instructions and the new locking mechanism is now in. As my door was in the stuck/ locked closed position it would not open. The two screws at the bottom acceded from inside when back driver side door was closed took me hours to unscrew. Than it too what must of been am hour to get the door to open, after many many many attempts at knocking the door. I was going to give up and pay VW £550+ (they said min 550 but they charge £170/hr what a rip offf, and they could not give me a fixed time and hence a fixed price) to doo it. After going away and coming back to it my lock kicked in and the door opened. After that followed your vid and it all works great. Thank you so much. You saved me a lot. In uk all cars must have yearly check up and the stuck door would fail the car and hence ban it from the roads. So very happy I got it fixed. Thank you so much.
Glad it could be of help mate. Things like that can be a pain if you're already on a tight budget. All the best!
William Booth thank you for taking the time to make the vid. 👍🏼
Thanks very useful vid. Now need to order parts and build up the courage to swap it out.
Good luck! I'm sure you'll get it done.
Very, very informative video thank you so much. I like the fact that you spoke very calmly and explained everything in good detail. No background music like I've seen in many other videos. From our family Thank you so much you have saved us a fortune.👌😎🚘🚗
Hey Karl, thanks for the kind words. I am glad it could be of help!
94 Twats Or Twits Disliked This Video, Why ??
Thanks. for video, but next time would be graet to cut out things like screwing screws out of doors, so the video could be much shorter and more enjoying.
Well, if it comes to replace, then it's usefull. If it comes to fix it's useless.
William, and others looking in, can you say where you bought the new locking mechanism. You mentioned Ebay, but it would be helpful if you could be more precise - with a clue if you can't fully name the source. The video is the most useful I've seen. Precise and very well recorded. Well done!
Hi Mike, thanks for the kind words. It was some time ago unfortunately so I can't be terribly specific, I remember just searching for a mk4 locking mechanism, and then matching it to the one I had removed. Hopefully someone else can be more specific!
Prima! Vielen Dank für das informative Video, es hat mir wirklich weitergeholfen. Great! Thank You for the informative video, it really helped me.
The way I did it, i just plugged off cabeles from the door near hinges and I lock it and unlock it manually
