I favor a reflective tyvek bivy, enveloped in a plastic "bag", made of two taped-together, heavy duty 55 gallon drum liners. Sub 2 lbs, very versatile. Either the liners or the bivy can become clothing or tarps, I add to that a 1 lb net hammock, so that i dont have to lie in the mud, snow, brush, steep hillsides, rocks, thorns, bugs, flood water, roots, etc.
No shelter does you any good when you're hiking, or getting water, food or firewood, so I wanted gear that I could wear as clothing. I added a pair of Amazon's 1/4 lb each full-body bugnet suits and a pair of their 1/2 lb each "cut-leaf' type of camo nets. When it's cold, I wear these things as longjohns, and I can sleep ok at 30F degrees (inside of the bivy). in just cammies, balaclava, shemagh, 3 pairs of sock liners, gloves. Except for the balaclava, those items are needed in warm weather, too, and the balaclava can be stuffed with debris and used as a pillow. None of this gear is effected by its getting wet.
I can add dry debris to the above gear and gain 10F degrees, while staying mobile, and 10F more degrees is possible with debris, but you need so much of it that it's not portable. I have a discrete way of drying out the wet debris needed for the portable, 20F degree version and I can use hot rocks or water to gain another 10F degrees.
If it's colder than that, I'll have my two sets of long johns and it'll be too cold for people to be much of a threat, at least at night. So I can have an open fire and that adds another 10F degrees.I gain that warmth by taping the upper half of a 3x4 ft oval of clear PEVA shower curtain (wally's) to the open end of the bivy and "aim" the one way projected heat of a Siberian fire lay at the PEVA.
I can also "aim" the PEVA at the morning sun and the 'greenhouse effect" of the sun, PEVA and reflective tyvek make it 20F degrees warmer inside of the bivy by 11 am than it was at dawn. If people are the reason you're not using an open fire, you should be doing your moving at night and hiding during the day. One of the camo nets hides the shelter/hammock pretty well and more of the local debris can be used to cover the rest, while the other camo net can be used as insulation.

Good video. Yeah, it's important to bring some type of shelter system whenever we hit the trail. I think the biggest challenge is finding out what people are willing to carry on a simple day hike. I like being able to use the poncho to make a plowpoint shelter in warmer months. Thanks for getting out in the rain and sharing! See you on the next one!

Thank you for this video. I was looking for something versatile and light weight for my get home bag. A poncho with that huncho woobie means no lugging around a heavy tent and sleeping bag or time wasting on shelter building.

I just got another of Huncho combination, love these things.
For some urban/suburban stealth camping, SHTF training and preparation etc; this one is my recommendation above all the others I’ve tried.
Some were cheaper for sure, tons of them were more expensive and name brands whatever…this one is what I carry in my EDC pack every day.
In my AO this is a year round system but, if you live where it snows in winter…maybe not so much?
My urban/suburban Mystery Ranch UL18 & UL21 packs are now down to around 14lbs (including water) depending on which one of them I am using.
    Definitely recommend it.

Sometimes I sleep in my Jeep and blankets they tend to slide down a will be will slide down and you a wake up cold but if you wear a poncho liner with a hood you're literally wearing your blanket you won't be cold well not from the blanket falling off anyway. I thought this was another crackpot video but you know you're s*** man I want to thank you for making it and taking the time to share it with us have a great day man

It appears you may have reached enough people with this review for every retailer to be sold out of this poncho liner. 😄 I have the Helikon-Tex Swagman and poncho, and the Swagman is a very well-built product but I find the head hole too tight for my liking. I was thinking I might try the Huncho/Arcturus combination but it appears I'll have to wait. Thanks for the review.

Hi Doug, 😊 thanks for the video , that liner and poncho looks a great system for certain season's, and sure is better than nothing. As for your time being needed elsewhere we all have to take care of other things, and can't be taking off enjoying solo time too much, I'm only appreciative of the videos you've put out already, I look forward to seeing you again when you have time to get out in the woods, stay safe my friend, and may your God go whith you, Stuart UK.

Hi Doug, depending in what part of NH you're in, I could be kind of below you!
Am over in the Western part of MA.where, above me would be VT. ( Starts off as Brattleboro but you have other parts here & there) & I think for NH, it goes Winchendon, Winchester where the speedway is & Keene with White River Junction tucked in there as well.
I was waiting to see if you'd turn that poncho into an improvised tent using some stick off the ground as your "tent pole" but, where you weren't staying the night & were just using the woobie as your sleep system to showcase, I guess not.
I'm a new sub over here, have my own YT content but not much camping adventures in it unless you want to count me showing off how many people beyond me decided to camp out @ this 3 day long show nearby me that may get some kind of advertising up where you're at.
I gather you're primarily soloing your own excursions but, was wondering if you'd be up to doing any collabs with other bushcrafter folks who end up on YT?
I like Corporals Corner, learned some cool builds from him.
Swedwoods who looks like a guy in a band I have been listening to off again / on again & does a lot of stuff over where he's @ around places like Norway & wherever; Simon, A Bloke In The Woods who physically reminds me a bit of John Cleese from Monty Python but his adventures & showcasing certain things like MRE's from wherever are fun to watch, plus Greg Ovens.
I think the only person semi close to either of us would be Shawn from Corporals Corner, but no idea if he'd ever collab although folks want him & Steve Wallis from Camping With Steve on YT to do something together 1 day.
Anyway, cool stuff & TY for the presentations.
    Chris

How many people would like to know what day of the week Doug does a particular video that we’re watching. Maybe that could go in the comments. What I mean by go in the comments that Doug could put that in the comments what day of the week, so when we’re looking at this when it pops up on our TH-cam channel, it’s in the title of a day of the week if it’s in the same week that we actually watch the video like today is Thursday did he do this on Tuesday of this week. When people put the month day and year I don’t even know what day the date is on that unless I look it up. Lol lol anyways just to curiosity what other people are thinking about that.

The honcho poncho was the worst piece of camping gear I ever got. It leeks everywhere. Honcho poncho blamed me for there defects! If you reed all the grate reviews look for the ones that really tested in rain. None of them have. All ways test your gear at home first. Your life could depend on it some days. Thank the gods I did not just trust it to work on a search and rescue. Ps. The acturs poncho has the best hood set up for a hat out there. I wish they would make an XL poncho.

    • @DougShoeBushcraft
      @DougShoeBushcraft  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

? the honcho poncho isn't waterproof. It's a poncho liner. In the rain you have to wear a poncho over it EDIT Sorry I misunderstood. I have the honcho woobie. I haven't tried the honcho poncho. I agree that arcturus is good.
