Some of these comments were out of date, so just to set the record straight, the armed militia in NC really boiled down to a couple of people making threats online. When they actually arrived at the site and saw the situation, they realized they were misinformed and came back and pitched in help, but it was very scary for a while there. My liberal gay niece lives on a mountain in WNC. She's been making quite a few friends there who had never met a gay person before nor sat down to talk with a liberal. So proud of her. After Helene hit, her whole mountain community came together to find each other, dig out, sharing what food, water, clothes and shelter they had. They have forged life-long ties.
My mom was still a French citizen to the day she died, which is weird because when she was in France her French was kind of outdated, and she missed the United States. Yet when she was here in the US, even after 70 years, her English was still accented and ever so slightly peculiar. And her favorite insult was to call something American. But she was pretty funny. She told me once that the reason she put 'Catholic' down on her end of life paperwork (even though she hadn't practiced it since she was 10 years old) was because if you're born catholic, that's it, there's no getting out.
That’s exactly how I am. I have lived four times longer in Britain than where I was born. When I go back my mother tongue is weird to my family and friends. Here in Sheffield my daughter laughs at the way I pronounce certain words. Apparently my ‘ankle’ and ‘uncle’ sound pretty alike!😂as well as many other words that I just pronounce ever so strangely! So they tell me!😂
Accents are quite difficult to lose. I'm from Washington State, retired in France since '92, and my accent when speaking their language is the delight of my French friends. I've finally given up trying, and assure them that I keep it purely to amuse them. Example: they can't distinguish any difference whether I say 'roi' or 'oie,' which has put an end to my attempted explanation of the difference between a bolet and a cèpe: "It's like the difference between men and kings...")
"KES" still stands vivid in my memory. It is such a powerful, moving film of a working class boy in a depressed South Yorkshire community who finds true comfort, and love, through his relationship to a kestrel whom he rescued. Brilliant, authentically sad, and terribly insightful, the film truly lingers in memory.
My parents brought us to Australia in 1970 for 2 years. We stayed. In hindsight England was grim. Childhood was defined, proscribed and the sunny moments were few.
Depends on many things. I had a great childhood in the seventies. We were not wealthy, just happy. My sister in law was carted off to Australia in 1975 as a teenager and saved up to come back alone as soon as humanly possible (i.e when she turned 18). She found it socially stifling and culturally boring. Her family settled there but it’s not for everyone.
Great comment when John said that Britain had lost influence and felt that loss until the moment when Europe opened up. Consider what that means since 2016.....
I used to love John's Radio4 shows (The Department, Political Animal), and each year I would catch him and Andy trailing their Edinburgh show at the Lescar.
Try going through immigration in the UK under Theresa May 2013 - that was loads of fun too...over 8000 in fees, each hurdle cost at least 1000 - then there was the ceremony with the mayor of Hillingdon bouncing around with a cap and sceptre. And having to pledge to God or the Queen - take your choice. Wow. I won't ever get over it.
France may get more tourists, but maybe, just maybe, the UK would get even less if went without the royal family as a tourist draw. Granted, with 60% of tourists visiting places associated with the royal family and a third listing Buckingham Palace as a must see, it's possible that quite a lot of those tourists would still visit those locations even if the royal family were to be deposed.
As an American, I don't understand why people keep wanting to move here...our healthcare system is the worst among industrialized nations. If I was wealthy, I'd move to Norway or Germany...their healthcare systems are far superior to America's.
This is true but people like John Oliver earn huge amounts of money, so they don't worry about whether they can afford healthcare insurance in the USA.
An American are you? If you needed to depend upon the national health systems of the other countries you mention your opinion may quickly change as it comes from TH-cam & it’s ridiculously oversimplified ignorance and those who do not understand that US healthcare is delivered differently, no waiting for anything despite one’s income. You probably need to take a Civics class because the Electoral College is built into our Constitution. It was designed to stop large states -- like New York at the time -- from dominating all the other states. Without the EC, politicians would only need to focus on California and New York while completely ignoring the rest of the country. It doesn't have anything to do with "gerrymandering".
Re: John Oliver’s hair: 1) I love it, delightful. 2) I will never forget him saying years ago, “There is only one haircut that looks good on me and it is called The Business Judi Dench”
Okay, you know what I would love to see John Oliver or Samantha Bee do as part of the British Commonwealth? I would LOVE to see you guys on Taskmaster. I doubt very much they'd do a Daily Show Reunion of Jon Stewart, Steven Colbert, Steve Carell, Samantha Bee, and John Oliver because honestly, I think any one of you is a huge get. And also my American compatriots without dual citizenship are less likely to be asked. Though I can dream. But yes, any of you being on would, I think, be hilarious.
I would like to institute citizenship classes in middle school. Just so the average U.S. citizen doesn't get owned by a freshly minted citizen when it comes to general U.S. knowledge.
We have but most kids don’t pay attention and teachers just pass them since the assignments are too easy. The no child left behind policy did more harm than good.
It's a thing that a lot of people don't get about the UK. We don't have the "great white north" sort of cold, where snow drifts 30 feet deep overnight and exposed skin gets frostbite in like 5 minutes or whatever. It's more insidious, and gradually seeps down through your flesh, into the very marrow of your bones, and kind of freeze distils hope out of your soul.
Separate comment because this is concerning. I feel like doom stating the polls is not accurate. How many polls are focusing on under 30? It really seems to me like the reliable polls have been showing her several points ahead consistently, and the younger people are voting for her in a significant majority. Yes we should all get out and vote and make sure, NOTHING is more important. But doomcasting may have the opposite effect of encouraging people. Just a thought.
I have been watching John every Sunday that he’s been on for nearly the past decade, and I’m just now realizing what a master of metaphors this man is. The royal family is a vestigial tail that should have fallen off long ago. The man speaks and poetry comes out.
Love British immigrant comedy.. and yes Brit’s still have considerable power.. to be able to pass as expats rather than immigrants for one.. many thanks to immigrants and their contributions to America
You are spectacularly wrong about life in the UK during the 60s and 70. Kes is a book, fiction as well but beautifully portrays life in the industrial north during a time of transformation culminating in the 70s to joining Europe.
The United States surpassed the UK in GDP in the 1870s. But the US wasn't recognized as the world leader it still is, until The Great War (WW1) when the United States surpassed all other countries in its wartime capability.

Too funny. When we moved to England, we didn't realize we needed a living visa. So we showed up upon moving with literally a stacked cart with luggage. Anyone with a common sense would have asked why we had so much luggage, but alas, we sailed through and enjoyed three years of absolute bliss. Thank you England!

Then again... its 3:30 on a Saturday, if I start thinking about how bad the system is I'm gonna start the day-drinking! 😆
I can't understand why one state can take the election. This time it's PA.
@LG123ABC Sounds like you need to educate yourself mate...
@@LG123ABC So you just fix the states and ensure that you win the electoral college even though you lost the vote. Yes sounds a really fair system.

the earth is one country. freedom of movement.
No, that's not how it works -- at all.
So fun to hear you all natter.
Re: John Oliver’s hair: 1) I love it, delightful. 2) I will never forget him saying years ago, “There is only one haircut that looks good on me and it is called The Business Judi Dench”
The Royal Wedding was an "excuse to day drink". Wait...British people need an excuse to day drink?
Day drinking begins at 11am. Ends at 11pm. Period.
You had no self-confidence?! I was a white gay teen in Apartheid South Africa during the start of the AIDS epidemic!
Funniest comment goes to Sam for the balloon drop. "Balloon drops are over, they're
full of sand and hurt!"😂
Great interview!!! 🙏🏻🌎☮️☘️
LOOOOVVVEEE John Oliver!
I read "A Kestrel for a Knave" in my English class in around 2006.
I’m also from Bedford, so naturally I know John Oliver
Okay, you know what I would love to see John Oliver or Samantha Bee do as part of the British Commonwealth? I would LOVE to see you guys on Taskmaster.
I doubt very much they'd do a Daily Show Reunion of Jon Stewart, Steven Colbert, Steve Carell, Samantha Bee, and John Oliver because honestly, I think any one of you is a huge get. And also my American compatriots without dual citizenship are less likely to be asked. Though I can dream.
But yes, any of you being on would, I think, be hilarious.
I’ll dream with you
Sam was definitely affected by these two. She started off so positive and progressively got more and more gloomier 😂
Great interview. Subscribed.
Yup! Perfect description.😂
Came for John, left in love with his wife.
LOVE IT- JOHN OLIVER, BEAST OF THE WEEK‼
As someone who has lived in Sioux Falls SD, a lot of us loved you all!
Such a good point regarding the times prior to the UK opening up the the continent.
I would have passed from cardiac arrest at the ripe age of 17 if star spangled Jessica Simpson showed up to my workplace with BBQ lmao
It took John a while to mention she left out Steve, but I was kinda shocked at that as well.
anyone else notice the "wandering wedding ring" on Johns hands? Every time his hands are visible that ring is on another finger 🙂
Channeling Les Nesman...
This was awesome! ❤️❤️❤️
Everyone has great hair! Especially love yours John
This was great. I know it wasn't the intention, but thanks for the laughs!
Loved this!
Chicago pretty crappy weather too!
John and Seth have a residency in Vegas?? That sounds like a guaranteed good time!
No, it's in the Beacon Theatre in NYC. They have a show there once a month. She just equated it with a Vegas one.
Got to love Sam and Jon ❤
Glad to have him aboard!
what a great idea to marry a comedian if you have PTSD
The United States surpassed the UK in GDP in the 1870s. But the US wasn't recognized as the world leader it still is, until The Great War (WW1) when the United States surpassed all other countries in its wartime capability.
When i got my Canadian passport, nobody cared.
Doesn’t matter, you knew your life was better. That’s all that’s important.
You left off Aasif Mandvi, too, in your list of Daily Show alums. And Hasan Minhaj.
Oh fer gosh sake. It is all pretty simple. John has an eye for ludicrous comedic talent. All he did was let them loose..
❤🤍💙 👍 John and Sam are fantastic.
I did the opposite....American that moved to the UK....I know the stress.....happy to be done with it.....
I'm Canadian as well I was born in Comox Vancouver Island, my parents moved to Seattle Wa in 1967 when was going into 2nd grade. Spent 1st grade in Canadian school. They read the bible ( or something religious ) in 1st grade. My parents didn't attend church, neither did I.
Canadian as well. At school we sang God Save the Queen. Oliver would find that hilariously antiquated.
Time to buy that '68 Dodge Challenger with a 440 Hemi. When you become American you are not selling out, you are buying in. Regardless of race, color, or creed.
Delightful! Thank you.
I am fully expecting bad news tomorrow (election day). I remember a day when we were going to send an orange clown back to Manhattan....and we ended up with the worst president of all time. 👽🗿👽🗿👽
I think the surprisingly gorgeous compliment was more about wondering how John got Kate. But I think it's easy to know how. She needed his humor and humanity to lean on when memories of war and back home rescues she's done get to be too much.
"I didn't have a glittering career in the UK."
You undersell "The Congressman's Penis" John.
I love all of these people. And I really, really miss Sam's show.
John’s wife sounds amazing.
Too funny. When we moved to England, we didn't realize we needed a living visa. So we showed up upon moving with literally a stacked cart with luggage. Anyone with a common sense would have asked why we had so much luggage, but alas, we sailed through and enjoyed three years of absolute bliss. Thank you England!
Kes was part of my school syllabus in Australia.
Ha! Why hold off? The fact that this election is 50/50 tells us how America is doing.😂😂 Good luck folks (whatever happens)
This was so great
My absolute Favorite wizard toucan!!!
... *8:54* Actually, *Fun Fact* John; the Euro-Disney Princesses pull in more tourists, more revenue and better paying jobs.
The most popular Princess in the history of the world was treated with a curious disdain by the Queen, immediately after the death of that Princess...
