I just got the Pixel 8 pro and it's awesome. But I don't understand why every Pro Pixel has had the lenses in the physical order they're in. They should be laid out in order of focal length to minimize the parallax jump between them. This has to contribute to the janky lense switching while shooting video. I'm sure there's some engineering space saving reason I don't know about. But I wonder if they've even considered this impact of the layout.
Ben, could you make an updated review on this? Even just between 7P & 8P? Everyone says their camera improved a lot after the recent updates especially the December one. Great video! I appreciate all the work that went into this! Also, this video made me feel really good about sticking with my Google 6 Pro for now. Yes, the 7 and 8 are marginally better, but not yet enough for me to justify upgrading. Actually, I'm thinking of getting a Samsung S23 Ultra as soon as the S24 comes out and the price of the S23 begins to drop significantly.
one of the best reviews. Including more generations takes this from very good to perfect. Many people switch only every few years or are buying older models, making this 3 gen comparison super useful. Thank you!
This is fantastically done. Other great reviews out there, but this got straight to the point with plenty of data sets to make a conclusion. Although the 8 Pro doesn't do well in some areas over the 7 pro in a few ways, the things I cared about the most is portrait mode with human subjects and the ultrawide video mode.
Im using pixel 7 pro, it seems so weird to me that P6P seems more stable in the stabilization test you can see less jitter in the leaves when running. Also on the ultrawide video, and crop 4-5x video pixel 6 pro looks better. closer to the p8p pro than the pixel 7 pro even the colors are closer. what is happening there?
Hey man love your test. Did you experience an overcontrasty look on the Pixel 8 Pro? I noticed that in my tests all the time and I look sometimes scary with all the contrast and wrong colours.
28:49 - I'm not sure why this is such a common misconception. The perspective does not change, cropping an image has the exact same effect as having a lens with longer focal length. The perspective is exactly the same. The difference is the resolution (obviously) and the depth of field. Essentially cropping acts like using a smaller sensor with the same lens. So the benefit of having a tele camera is the larger sensor, shallower depth of field and higher resolution than cropping from the main sensor. Not the perspective/compression.
A crop is definitely not the same. If you're doing a 5x crop on the main lens it will look different to thr 5x Tele lens. It is less the case here because the crop is in the 4x on the 6 Pro
@@LoverOfTech It quite literally is the same in terms of the perspective and compression. That's how physics work. Feel free to look up how sensor size and lens focal length are tied together. You have a different perspective with a wide-angle camera because to get the same framing, you have to get closer to the subject. If you're standing at a fixed point, the wider angle gives you larger field of view, but the center part is the same as with a longer focal length (or alternatively smaller sensor). You can of course test it yourself. Take a photo with the "1x" camera, then with the "5x" from the same spot. In post crop the 1x image to get the same framing as the 5x image. The resolution and depth of field will be different, but perspective and compression will be the same. I understand you review phones etc so there's no need for you to deeply understand how the image in a camera is created, but you should ideally also make at least some research when someone corrects you. Or don't, I'm writing this correction mainly for people watching the video, because reviews should ideally provide correct info. And as I mentioned it's not just you, I've heard this from multiple people doing phone reviews, and I understand why people think that, as I also used to think that optical zoom somehow compresses the image more than a simple crop. Lenses are not exactly super intuitive.
@@MultiZymethSK dude what the hell are you talking about? Is English your first language? I'm trying to find a reason why'd you'd write something so completely incorrect.
@@TedThomasTT No, it's not my first language, that doesn't change how reality works. If my explanation does not meet your standards, you can always ask for an explanation on r/AskScience or r/ELI5. You can also more easily see it when you have a zoom lens. While you're zooming in, the effect is the same as digitally cropping in, except with a digital crop you'll get worse quality because you're using a small portion of the sensor and lens. But the word that people use in this case is "compression", which describes the effect of things appearing similar in size when you're zoomed in. It does not matter how you achieve that zoom, provided you're not zooming in "with your legs" - which means moving closer and using a wider FoV. Some phones choose to use the wide angle lens in low light even when they could use the tele one, because it captures more light. But guess what? When it's compared side by side to a "native" zoom with a lens, nothing like compression changes.
@@LoverOfTech Again...THANK YOU for such a comprehensive review! All of the other tech vid bloggers should be using YOU as the template...such a great and informative review!
Best comparisons on TH-cam! I think in the next two updates they will tune the Pixel 8 Pro even more. The last time they changed sensors (Pixel 6), it took them a couple of updates to tune them. It's almost as if they slapped on either the P6 or P7 algorithms because some look more like the P6 and others like the P7. Main takeaways for me: Wider aperture on all lenses on the P8 give much better natural background separation and better lowlight. Autofocus seems to be improved on the P8. Good eye on the increased brightness effecting portrait lighting on the P8. This seems to support my hypothesis that they're a couple updates away from its maximum potential. Another takeaway is that the different between the P6 and P7 is negligable. I'm glad I waited to come from the P6 to the P8 and didn't pay attention to the noise. Prediction is that the next one to get will be the P10 and Google will lift off into the stratosphere once they have a better chip architecture to work with. It will be like a sprinter who has trained for years with ankle weights finally removing them.

been using my 4a for 3 years now..def one of the best budget phones I've ever used.. now wondering if i should move to a pixel 7 base model..or wait for the 8a 🤔 for the tensor g3
This is brilliant!!! I got a 7 pro last year with very high hopes for the 5x optical zoom and have been consistently disappointed with the color tuning and resolution. Perhaps the resolution issue would improve with a tripod, but Ive not found a tripod that fits in my pocket. The lense flare color shifting can produce some artistically interesting photos. But yeah, a clear image is what we're mostly after. I'm a pro film photographer, so anyway I'm not a fan of the oversharpness on the digital side. I don't swap phones every year - due for an upgrade to my iPhone 12pro. Debating whether that camera and computational photography aspect is that much better than the 7pro to make it worthwhile Any thoughts on this? Tnx
I mean, the 5x zoom on the 8 Pro has improved a lot, especially when it comes to colours, light and sharpness. All the phones are on Android 14 so the Pixel 6 Pro and 7 Pro I don't see them getting better than what I have showcased
The wide sensor on the pixel 7 pro is 50mp not 48 :) So the photos are 12,5mp so i hope google will release the pro camera features for the pixel 7 also and give us them full 50mo raws :)
44:10 I have pixel 6 pro, it is strange that your 6 pro havent changed the lens in video, also mine changes lens even in night time scenarios as yours failed, I guess googles inconsistency in it is massive
@@LoverOfTech Yeah, definitely can feel that sometimes😂 Also noticed that if you touch and hold screen it locks focus and focus becomes better on it as well, weirdly enough
Will you be touching on the astrophotography modes between certain phones one day? As someone who lives in a rural area I love taking shots of the stars and even using the 4 minute capture time in storms to gather lightning shots so would love to see your take on which phone camera manages to do this best. As far as I can tell I'm yet to see a phone even come close to Google's astrophotography mode. 🍻 cheers for all your hard work.
@LoverOfTech no no i didn't mean the lens switching, i meant the weird movement and blur while you were moving with the zoom lens video. It occurs less on the 8 pro, but on the other models, it's more frequent.
from what i noticed in video mode I noticed improvement in color, sharpness, and lens flare submission between the 7pro and the 8pro, but i prefer the dynamic range from the 7pro. I guess it was hard to software process all the improvements with the color and sharpness and also get a more natural dynamic range. some people might actually prefer this new one more though but for me it feels like the shadows are crushed a bit too much for my taste.
I preferred it when you took the night photos in extremely dark places so we can see the difference in night mode. This new location you are using is very bright, in my opinion this is a setback for your videos
Just checked out the 8 and 8 pro in stores and conpared then to my 7 pro video was better.. slightly, pictures seem the same.. but the refresh rate of the regular and pro both seemed slower than my 7 pro.
Excellent camera comparision. Thank You. While reviewing comparing cameras of smart phone action photos are real important , for example slightly always moving kids pets . Those which ever camera can handle better makes more sense. Request you to include some action photos of people or pets next time without tripod of course. Thanks again.
well, there is definitely some improvements but not worth to switch to 8p if you have 7p or 6p imo. and it will never be a big change until they bring a 1-inch sensor on main cam or a bigger tele.
Again, one of the best phone camera comparisons. Thanks for your effort. And as usual, awesome british accent. The ice topping. I saw a battery comparison between iphone 15 pro max, poxel 8 pro and pixel 7 pro. The iphone is way way way better. What surprised me was that the pixel 7 pro had slightly better battery life than the 8 pro. I thought they would have worked on it. With that in mind amd seeing the pictures, I think the 7pro offers the most for its money. Where the 8 pro really shines is the AI stuff.
Actually it would be great to see images and videos over the full width of each camera, so we can see also the corner sharpness instead of only showing the middle part of each phone. otherwise great comparison thanks.
Can you make another comparison with these phones 6 pro and 7 pro i wanna see if there is improvement came on camera after june features drop update???
In dubai still some shops sell new google pixel 6 pro old stock i wanna buy it because i prefer 4x sony telephoto rather than 5x samsung 7pro because i saw 4x batter
Which one has more color accuracy in 4K/30? The 8Pro has muted colors, but also seems more natural. Overall, it seems sharper than the older Pixel Pros.
@@aaroncoe9656 Keep in mind that Google has not released all the features promised for the phone until Dec. And every few months Google updates the camera software and there are sometimes improvements. This has happened with the Pixel 7. I just updated my camera on my P7, the UI is mostly good. Don't care for the the swipe to settings. The gear is in a much better place... which is all we need. So I keep accidentally getting the settings menu. UGH. I think the color on the P8 is better, most of the time. While the grass was greener on the P7 and P6, his orange jacket was bright and lively on the P8. Having brown leaves look green isn't accurate, which is what I don't want. Samsung is notorious for pumping out the color so photos pop.
@@LoverOfTech Took me a while to watch your whole video. At first, I thought the P6Pro had a much sharper image than the P8 and a bit more than the P7pro. At 9min53s, the brick are sharper and the sign with 4 circles is much clearer than on the P8. In other videos, sometimes the leaves look sharper on the P6pro. But of course your jacket and skin tone looks great on the P8Pro. Then I realized. The P8 wasn't recording lower quality video, but that it considered the background less important than you, the subject. Where you're sharp. So on the P7Pro/P6Pro, you lacked detail, more flat. Thus, the P8 ends up doing the right thing. I'll still want 8Pro features, but not the 8Pro size. The Telephoto lens is great, I want it... but size matters. :(
I don't know if I'm the only one seeing this but at the top of the lowlight photos with no "night mode" active, the pixel 8 pro had a lot of banding on the dark sky
Very interesting, do you think you could do the same with 6a, 7a and 8a when the latter will be released ? I'm shoked with the fact Google really took video at an other level with the 8 Pro

I'm sure there's some engineering space saving reason I don't know about. But I wonder if they've even considered this impact of the layout.
That's smart
Ben, could you make an updated review on this? Even just between 7P & 8P? Everyone says their camera improved a lot after the recent updates especially the December one. I myself am torn between P7P & P8P especially that the former's on sale right now. Thank you. Your in depth camera reviews are so helpful. ❤ Keep going!
Sorry but I won't be doing that until Pixel 9 Pro comes out. These tests take a long time to put together and the editing process is very intense. I have to focus on new phones at the time where people will watch it
@@LoverOfTech Wow. Thanks for being honest about it. I totally understand. Could you answer this instead? P8P & P7P are on sale at the moment. Which do you recommend for nature & sunset shots, & some videos of them? Or should I wait for the 9 Pro instead? Thanks Ben. May you & your team's hard work pay off soon. You very much deserve it. All these years, I've been waiting for such an in-depth comparison like yours. Finally, I found your channel. Yours is at the top. So much effort & helpful info. Thanks so much again. 😊😊😊
@@catnesscuteness I like to buy refurbed, i think i will get 7Pro. Right now I can get one @like 300-350€. 6Pro are not much cheaper and 8Pro is still to expensive. 7Pro is better at details in dark areas, just Lens Flare could be better, i would like to know if there is also an improvement after the update u talk about.
Thank you!
I will be doing this test again as a 4-Way Gen test with 9 Pro XL
@@LoverOfTech This is wonderful! Thank you for your effort! :)
WHAT an incredible review....these are the kind of comparisons I love to see! Well done, good sir -- you earned a "subscribe" on this!! :)

@@LoverOfTech I Love my Pixel 7 Pro ❤️❤️
Awesome comment 👏🏿
the most detailed comparison. You earned a subscriber mate,
Thanks for the sub and there are plenty more on the channel to enjoy 😉
Just by judging from the grass and sky you can easily tell that the pixel 8 pro is much less oversaturated 👌🏻 love to see it.
Very good 🏆 Damn, not much has changed. I like this number seven better.
Gj with the video, subbed to support. No nonsense, straight to the facts.
Thanks for the sub 💪🏿
10:08 there were definitely some gains in color and stabilization
Definitely gains in colour for sure
Super fantastic thanks these are all the things I wanted though I want more handheld selfie video since I'm dumb
What a video! I just suscribe. Love the results for the Pixel 8 Pro

Dope comparison and good to see the improvements Google made over the 3 generations
Thanks for watching 👏🏿
been using my 4a for 3 years now..def one of the best budget phones I've ever used.. now wondering if i should move to a pixel 7 base model..or wait for the 8a 🤔 for the tensor g3
Get the Pixel 8, enjoy and keep it moving
Hey Lover of Tech, can you tell me what tripod your using the hold all those 3 phones?
It's not just one tripod. It's a built one of different components
Nice comparison, but without zooming in, really hard to see any difference. Please zoom in photos and let us see details on it. Thanks 👍
Day in and day out this guy this guy puts out such amazing content. Respect sir
Thank you 😊
Very detailed comparison. Thank you very much.

Great job man, you are the only one did what I expect.
Glad to hear it 🙏🏿
Nice. We get to see how much they have improved
Yes. Nothing. Whitout lens flares.
Very good test, exact what i was looking for.👍
31:44 could you please tell us the exif info on all 3 phones here?
Iso and shutterspeed.
I'll have a look later
@@LoverOfTech Thanks!
@@LoverOfTech Looking forward to it 😇
This is brilliant!!! Debating whether that camera and computational photography aspect is that much better than the 7pro to make it worthwhile
Any thoughts on this? Tnx
I mean, the 5x zoom on the 8 Pro has improved a lot, especially when it comes to colours, light and sharpness. All the phones are on Android 14 so the Pixel 6 Pro and 7 Pro I don't see them getting better than what I have showcased
Still think the Pixel 6 pro camera bar looks the best out of the 3.
It just does what it feels like lol
@@LoverOfTech Yeah, definitely can feel that sometimes😂 Also noticed that if you touch and hold screen it locks focus and focus becomes better on it as well, weirdly enough
Plz make a video for the normal 7,8 and 9 when it's released
Will you be touching on the astrophotography modes between certain phones one day? As someone who lives in a rural area I love taking shots of the stars and even using the 4 minute capture time in storms to gather lightning shots so would love to see your take on which phone camera manages to do this best.
As far as I can tell I'm yet to see a phone even come close to Google's astrophotography mode. 🍻 cheers for all your hard work.
I don't really live in an area that I can showcase Astro mode properly sadly
@@LoverOfTech not a worry mate, no harm in running it by you, cheers for letting me know legend! 🍻
I know this is very late, but question, why does this weird twitching appear on the Zoom lens video when recording?
It's the len switching
@LoverOfTech no no i didn't mean the lens switching, i meant the weird movement and blur while you were moving with the zoom lens video. It occurs less on the 8 pro, but on the other models, it's more frequent.
@@IshaqHikmat maybe the quality of the OIS or stabilisation in general
@@LoverOfTech yeah maybe that is the problem, thank you.
from what i noticed in video mode I noticed improvement in color, sharpness, and lens flare submission between the 7pro and the 8pro, but i prefer the dynamic range from the 7pro. I guess it was hard to software process all the improvements with the color and sharpness and also get a more natural dynamic range. some people might actually prefer this new one more though but for me it feels like the shadows are crushed a bit too much for my taste.
Great Video man. Love it! Love from the Philippines. Planning to buy Pixel 8pro.
Thanks for the support 🙏🏿
I preferred it when you took the night photos in extremely dark places so we can see the difference in night mode. This new location you are using is very bright, in my opinion this is a setback for your videos
Great video! Thank you.
You're welcome 🤗
Excellent video!

Night Video on Pixel 6 pro looks sharper and better 😂
Wow that intro packs a lot of instant objective detail. Love it!
Actually nvm, it's the entire video! The entire video is extremely well done!
Thank you very much for your kind words!
Just checked out the 8 and 8 pro in stores and conpared then to my 7 pro video was better.. slightly, pictures seem the same.. but the refresh rate of the regular and pro both seemed slower than my 7 pro.
Crazy good content🔥
Thank you 😊
Great review. Could you make a separate video comparing astrophotography of all 3 maybe 🙏
Great comparison, as usual tons of footage and images, that helps a lot to make a good decision. Thank you!
@@PatrickWithCamera glad it helped 💯

Excellent camera comparision. Thank You. While reviewing comparing cameras of smart phone action photos are real important , for example slightly always moving kids pets . Those which ever camera can handle better makes more sense. Request you to include some action photos of people or pets next time without tripod of course.
Thanks again.
I don't have any pets but thanks for watching
Excellent content. Thanks
Thank you 😊
well, there is definitely some improvements but not worth to switch to 8p if you have 7p or 6p imo. and it will never be a big change until they bring a 1-inch sensor on main cam or a bigger tele.
Bro i am planing to buy a 13 pro or 15 which is almost same price in india. My priority is videography and photography so which one is better for me?
15
Again, one of the best phone camera comparisons. Thanks for your effort. And as usual, awesome british accent. The ice topping.
I saw a battery comparison between iphone 15 pro max, poxel 8 pro and pixel 7 pro. The iphone is way way way better. What surprised me was that the pixel 7 pro had slightly better battery life than the 8 pro. I thought they would have worked on it. With that in mind amd seeing the pictures, I think the 7pro offers the most for its money. Where the 8 pro really shines is the AI stuff.
Thanks for the comment. Always makes me chuckle about the accent part😂
Actually it would be great to see images and videos over the full width of each camera, so we can see also the corner sharpness instead of only showing the middle part of each phone. otherwise great comparison thanks.
No comparison is perfect so doing tje with what I have. Thanks for watching 👏🏿
Man !!!! you're a monster, you got a new follower👌👌👌👌
can i ask Is it better that I update my 6 pro to android 14 or is 13 still the best?
Android 14
Thank you
Why is the telephoto video on the pixel 7 pro terrible compared to the 6p and 8p?
Good job bro!
Thank you 😊
Can you make another comparison with these phones 6 pro and 7 pro i wanna see if there is improvement came on camera after june features drop update???
@@Gaming60fps no

Which one has more color accuracy in 4K/30? The 8Pro has muted colors, but also seems more natural. Overall, it seems sharper than the older Pixel Pros.
Pixel 8 Pro
I'm likely to return the 8 Pro due to its colour accuracy, found my brother's 6 Pro to be more accurate, albeit not as high quality which is expected.
Thank you from Poland!)
the recorded audio sounds always better on the 6 pro
this is the best comparison on youtube for these phones... and thank you about telling about all these quirks
Glad you liked it
Very interesting, do you think you could do the same with 6a, 7a and 8a when the latter will be released ?
I'm shoked with the fact Google really took video at an other level with the 8 Pro
