He was 21 when this came out. At that time he associated with the production trio Stock Aitken Waterman that had a huge run of pop hits. They pretty much dictated what his content was. He really didn’t get to record very many of his own songs until he broke away from them. He retired at 27 but is back now with some great songs that he wrote and produced himself.
Really like his newer stuff. You should check it out. Try is my favorite (it’s a serious one) especially the orchestral version from the London. Then he also had a dance one - Beautiful Life - and - Everyone Of Us

It's more out if love though, people were just surprised he wasnt 7 feet tall (and black) 😄 i had some metal head friends that would rag on it but thats pretty typical, it wasnt "hard core" enough for them etc. even though its musically complex. He doesn't take himself that seriously though and tours in the states occasionally aswell

Why would you need to over think this "lyrically", it's just a happy catchy good song that takes your mind off the difficulties in life. That's the point of 1980s music and why people still like it in 2022.

Rick started out as a drummer in a group called FBI, they used to practice in my mates tyre fitting garage, until he filled in for the singer who was sick and Pete Waterman of (Stock Aitken Waterman) heard him and Persuaded him to go to record at his studios in London, the rest is history.
You should really do his song "CRY FOR HELP". You will really be impressed with his voice on that one.

I’m not a millennial but I still love this song. It’s so upbeat.
First heard this song in 1987...I pictured the singer as a middle-aged, blue-eyed soul singer...I was shocked when I saw the video for the first time...Rick looked like he was still in middle school...Sometimes the voice doesn't match the face...Either way, it's an awesome song!
Well, as a single it was released only in spring 1988 - so you couldn't have heard it in 1987, at least not on the radio 😉
