I've been told the lights will be over the uk tonight to (sauturday) hopefully.. I'll be using the same settings but in linear mode instead of wide to get a closer images
Hi Pete. I'm using a low end cell phone to photograph the aurora and pics are def. grainy...May 10/11 in Scappose was amazing but August 27 and 30 were more difficult at Vista House due to wind. I'd love you to convince me that a GoPro 11 or 12 are enough and I don't need to spend $3k + on a mirrorless camera and lens. I would like to make some decent metal prints. Thanks.
@@WASF2024 I can't convince you of that! 😂. Gopro has a tiny sensor and it's remarkable you can use it for this or starlapses at all. If you can get something with a 1" sensor it'll be much better. One of the early Sony rx100 models or even a insta360 one R 1" edition. I got mine for free off amazon (long story). Good for this stuff after playing a while but a terrible action cam really. Iphones don't let you have any manual control and so I'd avoid those. If you can get a used S22ultra or newer they're good in astro mode of expert raw. Any proper camera will be decent I'd imagine. I'm far from any kind of subject expert, I'll just never tire of being out in nature and staring at the night sky and marvelling at the displays we're fortunate enough to see living here.
@@WASF2024 you'll need a pass through door and a battery pack like those used for phones. Or if you're feeling flush the gopro volta is handy. I got some tiny anker 5000mah packs. One of those plugged in will power a gopro all night.
Make sure you have a fully charged good battery or a power pack plugged in. Also make sure you have a compatible v30 sdcard. Check interval on auto and duration no limit. Otherwise dunno! 😂
@@parklandpiker I can't post a link or a pic here but v30 is a standard on the higher end SD cards. If yours doesn't have it, it will likely cause problems. They're pretty cheap these days. A 128GB Sandisk Extreme is perfect but make sure it comes from Sandisk or Western Digital themselves. There are heaps of fakes out there. The Sandisk Amazon shop is where I go when I need them.

@@mrmagoo582 it might be worth using wide and cropping later. Linear doesn't use all the sensor and so may not catch as much light.

What size of memory card did you use?
128gb SanDisk ultra in that one but the file created is only a small fraction of that. You'll run out of power and night time before you fill a card.

Well i did all the settings, and it only filmed 4sec 🤣 anyclue as to what went wrong..
