Is Hulk Hogan an underrated worker? Let us know in the comments below!

I've seen some of his matches from Japan, and he could work. He just didn't have to here in the States, and that's why he has the rep of being a med level worker.

Hulk Hogan is literally one of the greatest workers of all time. Not an exaggeration.
Just look at Wrestlemania X8 with The Rock. Both guys did NOTHING and they had the entire audience in the palm of their hand. THAT is professional wrestling. Audience engagement. That's why Hogan is a greater worker than 99.999% of guys. He doesn't need to really sell, or do huge moves or anything. He doesn't need to do 60 minute classics, he doesn't need to have a masterpiece of a match. He is the absolute master of the art of working. Of course his Andre match at WrestleMania is terrible, who cares? The point is its one of the most important matches ever because Hulk Hogan is a great worker.

Hogan lost 4 of his 5 biggest matches. Hogan vs Andre, won, Hogan vs Warrior lost, Hogan vs sting, lost. Hogan vs Goldberg, lost, Hogan vs Rock lost. Hogan was built to be immortal, but he did pass the torch to many guys, and his run back in WWE he lost to Rock twice, Undertaker, Triple H, Brock Lesnar and tapped out to Kurt Angle. I think he's underrated as hell when it comes to losing or working in the right time for his character, he did the job. But lose to much would just hurt his credibility and character. It meant something when you beat Hulk Hogan, and that's why his character as immortal was so important. I think mostly it's about jealousy when it comes to Hulk, because everybody wanted to be the number 1 guy. And he was it. He was the alpha and omega. He built WWE to what it is today and created two wrestling booms. The guy is THE legend.

Bobby Heenan's color commentary during that match was phenomenal. He had so much energy, and he was so on it - it was one of the best moments of Heenan's career (and he had a ton of great moments). What surprises me is that the idea for Goldberg beating Hogan for the title at that point came from Hogan. Hogan didn't put people over all that often. Goldberg and Sting were two guys he had no problem putting over. (Hell, he put Sting over several times - you can tell that he really liked and respected Steve Borden, and Borden respected Terry Bollea/Hulk Hogan.) But this match was lightning in a bottle. The pinnacle of WCW.

Props to Bischoff for doing this. I was younger when I was into wrestling and my parents couldn’t afford to order the PPVs for me so those Monday Nights were ways for me to find out what happened on those PPVs. The fact that this aired on live TV and I stayed up late to watch Goldberg vs Hogan on my TV was such a moment that I’ll remember as a fan.
Sure, it would’ve made sense business wise to hype it up for PPV but I appreciate that they gave that match to us on live TV. Such a surreal episode of Nitro!

  • @jakersak2

As a kid who loved wrestling, and also grew up poor, i never got to see any PPVs. I always had to hear about the results at school the next day from my friends. So getting to see my favorite wrestler Goldberg beat Hollywood Hogan on a regular old Monday Night Nitro and win that title was HUGE. So hats of to Bischoff and mostly Hogan for actually coming forward with this idea which was extremely out of character for him. One of my favorite moments that is forever burned in to my brain is when Hogan stepped out from brhind the curtains, looks directly at the camera and says "I am gonna kick Goldberg's... Butt!". I laughed so hard at that corny line and to this day makes me laugh. It was so bad lmao. Then watching him get what he had coming in spectacular fashion. Spear, jack hammer, 1 2 3 and the crowd goes wild throwing alk their garbage in the ring. Epic.

Did it seem like eventually like one day he would face Hogan? Ofcourse but that did not seem evident seeing at that point in 98 Hogan had only worked Sting,Savage,Piper,Giant and was currently feuding with DDP & Malone. Goldberg felt way closer to the beginning of his journey than the end and beating Hogan should have been the end. It felt like such a waste to give away possibly the biggest match they had with zero build completely out of the blue with both guys in other programs in the ppv the following sunday.
Goldberg win the title and then is facing Henning in a middle of the card title defense on the ppv. He’s on tv defending against Brian Adams & working in a battle royal the next ppv. He’s not even on fall brawl and it isn’t till Halloween Havoc they give him an actual ppv main event title match. If you wanna have Goldberg win the title why not build it up so it means way more and have stuff ready for him. It killed my interest when he won the title and was treated like a midcard world champion while Hogan main evented with Rodman,Malone and Jay Leno the next few ppvs. When Sting beat Hogan at Starrcade it should have been a changing of the guard but it wasn’t. Goldberg winning should have ushered in a new era but it didn’t and it killed my interest in wcw.

I think it's was because they wanted to have that match in the stadium that was approaching....a stadium...not a regular building...but a stadium....that fit around another 15 to 20k people in it. They wanted that match to be on live TV to showcase the MASSIVE crowd and how the crowd (again, MASSIVE) going wild and how loud that place got because of all those people in it. If they decided to advertise their match for weeks, the match would have ended up at a place that sat up to 20k less people in it. Also, it was Goldbergs home town/where he played football. So....that crowd was 10000% all for Goldberg and ALL of the lost their damn minds when Goldberg hit Hogan with that spear....what's funny is that Goldberg didn't hold back/pull a bit on his spear on Hogan. Goldberg acted like he needed to spear through Hogan's body lmao 😂

@@nexpro6118 you can have a match with hogan and Goldberg, but you can still protect Goldberg and Hogan. Goldberg spears hogan, but before he gets the jackhammer hogan is pulled out and the nwo does its attack but Goldberg runs through them. Goldberg gets the DQ and the streak is protected. Goldberg says every win has been by pinball except 1 and chases Hogan who puts up roadblocks. Goldberg faces hogan at Starcade where it’s no DQ and no count out. You get to stretch it out. Hell this is a company they built up sting vs hogan for a year and a half. The biggest issue with babyfaces is they need mountains to climb. People get bored with them on top. Hogan didn’t do it out of the kindness of his heart. He knew he would eventually have to drop it to Goldberg. Goldberg was hotter than anyone in the history of the business and so it was probably gonna happen at Starrcade.
Hogan dropped it to Goldberg on that Monday because the following Sunday was Bash at.Beach with Hogan/Rodman vs DDP/Malone which was gonna be the main event and get main stream press. The following month at Road Wild Hogan/Bischoff wrestled DDP/Leno which gained more mainstream press.
So Hogan dropped it to Goldberg but he was still the center of attention and he knew it would hurt Goldberg in the long run. Goldberg still ended up being a major star but imagine if they had the proper build and hype. They had 40,000 at Georgia Dome and the match was announced 3 days in advance. 3 fricken days.
I like Bischoff but just because you hit your forecast doesn’t mean you start doing illogical booking. To pop a rating??? Nitro was already getting huge ratings.
Now compared to the disaster that was Starrcade 97 because of Hogans behavior this ended up not being that terrible of a thing because it was a memorable moment but it completely killed what could of been a storyline that could of went on another 6 months. Look how WWE launched Austin brought in Tyson for WM 14 and the rest was history.
Starrcade 1998 could of been Goldberg winning the title and they’d had ton of momentum going into 1999. He would of had 6 more months of experience to get him more ready for it. Instead he’s losing at Starrcade 1998 and it was all downhill from there because the company had no direction storyline wise.
Thats why it was the wrong move.
