    5 issues for beginner flute players
    1. Don't smile and play.
    2. Don't tighten and blow harder for higher octaves.
    3. Don't lift your shoulders and chest when breathing.
    4. Don't tighten your throat or push from your throat.
    5. Don't stand with your feet parallel to each other.

    Thanks for the tip!! I think I am buying a used Geme..gardt 50 yrs old flute soon from an original owner. I have no idea what a 50 yrs old flute are going to sound. I will ask the owner to play for me first before buying it. She said she played the flute for 9 yrs and the flute have not been touch for a long time. So, again, thanks for the 5 important tips.

      Vicki L hi there! Sounds exciting. I think your strategy sounds good. A flute sitting around for a long time can be quite bad for it but if it is serviced and working well then there should be no problems!

    Great video, amazingly explained!
    I must add just one remark based on my 10+ years of teaching: although a tight and stiff "smiley" embouchure is very hard to loosen up and get more flexible, I had at least 2 students who had the idea that they have to blow as if it's a dandelion. Although I told them to keep their lips in their natural position,don't pull them together that much because it won't sound decently, blowing "loose and natural" was something they did not understand until I told them to blow as if they're smiling. That worked wonder. I told them it's just a half-smile though, not the tight awkward one with squeezing the eyes as well - and it worked😂😂

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Klarissima! Thank for the comment. I must say, every now and then, I find myself saying something to a student that I never thought I would but sometimes it is what the student needs to just grasp it! I once purposefully double-dotted rhythms and voila...they just got it! 😂😂

    You are absolutely right - learn all the scales and arpeggios - but - with varying articulation. It dies no good to blindly go straight up and down. 2nds, 3rd, alternate note arpeggios, etc.Think while you play. Invent. Create.

    Oh goodie! I don't do any of these things. I learned proper breathing in Yoga and Tai Ji, and I sing and drone my voice. Also, thanks for introducing the Rockstro position in another video, it totally cured my unconscious triggering of the right hand trill keys to just twist the mouthpiece a little bit off center. As for high notes what I found is that it just takes time to train the muscles so they can do it without strain. I can blow a didgeridoo but it took me quite awhile to get clean clear high notes without a lot of airy overtones on flute. Lip buzz is slightly different, but there's a portion of flute embouchure that only applies to flute. That being said practicing flute a lot greatly strengthens my capacity for lip buzz in pitch and range. I play everything I can get my hands on when it comes to musical instruments and after a few decades the general principles of musicality give me excellent skill on many different instruments where practice on each one in some way improves my skill with all the others.

    Your smiley students may very well have been initially taught by a clarinetist. Day one embouchure lesson: Smile...We're happy when we play the clarinet.
    In the states, most of our primary school teachers double up instructions on several instruments. My daughter's beginning clarinet class was led by the "winds" teacher -- he was a trumpeter.

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does depend a bit on how you do this and whether or not it causes tension or pain. Ideally you want to not hold the neck at any unnatural angles, but some players do this very effectively without getting any problems

    My band teacher taught me to keep my lips in the position of saying who or he would say do the kiss and roll method it helps with finding a great position for you in order to do this method you kiss the hole and roll the flute away from your top lip maintaing contact with your bottom lip and slowly moving the head joint and still blowing into the flute making sure you are making the perfect sound that you want!! This is my favorite method and I haven't seen a single video saying that this is a bad method so I will continue doing this method because it helps me in many ways of which are making the proper sound and being comfortable while playing the flute.
