      Just ran into a song today with lots of 8th note chords dipping into the low C and C sharp. Practicing it a bit but I find that it takes a millisecond of air to hit it.
      Does the condition of my flute contribute to the inability to hit that? (Unplugged open hole w/B foot - lost in damp basement storage a few years before I found it again. Plays well but I'll turn it into a repair shop soon.)

      @discos make me panic all the other low notes you have to play with very little air but for the low C use a little bit more are then the other ones, keep on practicing it and you'll get there
      Edit: also try going down on your scale first and the C might come

    I'm glad that you mentioned colour in your demonstration.
    I find that colour can give the perception of volume many times without the need to utilize "more air" - something that becomes very evident in the low register. A darker sound may be perceived as "loud" only from the lack of harmonics (thus more focused as processed by the brain) while a "quiet" sound from the presence of a lot of harmonics (the tone masked by "impurities" making the sound seem less focused, thus seem softer).
    The tricky bit is finding that "sweet spot" where the sound can be coloured according to the needs of a piece of music. I find Moyse's "De la Sonorité" very useful for that.

I've never been formally tutored so I was having a really hard time trying to figure out what I was doing wrong when I was playing low C and this video helped me solve it :) I'm practicing a piece that has some 16th notes of low Ds and Cs and it was frustrating me when I couldn't get the quality I wanted. I never really had much exposure to those notes before this piece so it was a struggle, but this video definitely helped a lot. You've earned yourself another subscriber :)

    I just found out something the hard way about low notes. Some students find themselves able to go down the scale to the C sharp nicely, but the C feels like a door slamming shut. It's completely not there. It turns out that there are fingering charts out there that tell you to only hold the roller down. My teacher says this can be made to work but he and most other charts recommend holding down the C# key and the roller, which is MUCH easier. So if you have this problem and your fingering chart came from Reddit, well, problem solved.

    Probably there is something wrong with my embouchure, because the G(4) to the E(4) are ok, but going down I get D(5) and C(5) harmonics instead of D(4) and C(4). If I close almost all the hole with my upper lip I can get them, but too weak and airy.

      Maria Davis when's the last time you had your flute serviced? When a flute goes out of adjustment, the low register is the first to go. Also if you can afford it, you'd do yourself a favor by send your instrument to a flute specialist rather than a run-of-the-mill repairer.

    Hi, I am a beginner flutist and I am starting with scales in the first octave before I start considering playing melodies. First octave notes I find easier to project out for some reason. The fingering is one of the hardest parts of playing in the first octave. But, there is one thing that I haven't overcome yet. That is running out of breath after 2 or 3 notes. This happens regardless of octave. And this is at mezzo forte. If I try to do it fortissimo, I can't even get 1 crisp note out because I run out of breath before the note becomes crisp. I'm still at the stage where there is a little bit of breathiness before I get the crisp note and quieter or louder than mezzo forte and the breathy part of the note lasts longer.
    I am playing completely legato in case you want to know(so no tonguing at all yet). Do you have any tips on how to get more notes per breath? I know my lung capacity will increase as I continue playing the flute but I find even the easiest of melodies to be challenging because I have to breathe every 2-3 notes(so pretty frequently and this is with deep breaths).

    It seems in youtube these is a video saying upper lip should be a little bit in front compare to lower lip.I can't recall who said that .Do you have any idea?I am confuse because Susan Maclagan said lower lip should be in front.

    The problem that I have when playing lower register is that it comes out an octave higher. (But I have the same problem when I play the higher register notes: it drops an octave sometimes.) How can I improve this? Also sometimes when I play the low register, I hear some kind of forces sound coming out from my throat. How can I improve in this area? I don't know how to explain this. I don't know if you would understand what I'm trying to say...

      I just had a lesson on this. Try raising the flute a little to uncover the hole more and slightly lower the corners of the mouth. This might work at least until Amelie can give you proper advice.

    hello, I have this cheap closed holes flute that I believe must cost around $100US the brand is called winner, I don't know if is a known brand outside where I live, Brazil.
    the point is, I can't seem to make the notes right, it is kinda if the flute was not adjusted correctly so air is maybe leaking, what should I do to improve on low notes in this situation...

    Dear Amelie, I was wondering if you have a video for how to play low C to low E legato? My pinky can not move that fast and I cannot achieve a legato without hearing a D first! It seems I must lift my ring finger AND move pinky at same time and that seems impossible. I’m a pianist and figured I had decent dexterity and control of my fingers, but I am quite mistaken and this movement seems impossible. Thank you for any thoughts or guidance you have on this. -Louis

    Hi Amelie, Thankyou for this super video. I just started playing a flute that my aunt found in the attic and I'm using a flute book called Absolute Beginners Flute by Ned Bennett. In the book the first note they teach is the low G, but I'm finding it really hard to play this note... I've tried it by myself and I can play lots of other notes, but not this one... the lower ones seen much harder. Any idea where I could be going wrong? I'm annoyed because I can't go any further in the book until I can play this one note 😆 Thankyou once again! 😘

    • @flutechannel
      @flutechannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its such a pleasure Rosie to meet you! The Ned Bennett book is good, i would also subscribe to our channel ( if you havent already ;P ) and lookout for our video announcing our method book. But for the note G it could mean a couple things: its an old flute so it may need a little bit of TLC from a technician. Shouldn't be much and they provide a free estimate usually. There could be a leak on the pads, thus not sealing to make the not pop out. Because G is pretty easy to play. I would trying blowing a bit wider but more in the flute if that makes sense and use slower air. Also try the Note A just before the G and alternate back and forth to see if anything happens. Try not to tongue but just breath a constant rate and slur the notes. Let me know if any of this helps. Hope to hear back from you!

      I've subscribed 😉 I'll be looking out for your book! You're right, the key was not closing properly! I did a half turn on one of the screws with a mini screwdriver and now it's sweet as a nut! 😁 I'll take it tp get looked at by the professionals to avoid more problems :) Can't wait to get started on your videos! Thankyou 😘

      Bro I feel like my flute’s broken tbh. My octaves are messed up, and the low notes only come out when they want to. I need them to come out all the time, or there’s no way I’m making tryouts or the competition...

    • @ollyspacedust4351
      @ollyspacedust4351 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just angled my hole so the top edge is in line with the top of the flute, probably not what your supposed to do but I can hit low notes like that at a decent volume now.

      you could have a leaky pad in that part of the flute. Or the mechanism is a bit off. I would take it to a technicians, Its usually a small fix. I can't really say much more, unless I saw it.

    I have my aunts old flute that I am getting fixed up. I am doing all the research i can before I even get it back. I will be a self taught beginner. Any advice?

    • @flutechannel
      @flutechannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Of course! Watch all our videos! :p but really start with learning some easy flute books (were actually writing our own method) but for now you can use a book like The Beginner's Book for the Flute by Trevor Wye (its blue) But you can learn on your own for a little bit but then its wise to get some instruction from a teacher. We offer lessons over skype if one day you feel up to that. Also always feel free to come on here and ask us questions. We do livestreams once a week as well, so that may a great time to ask questions and get answer live.

      The Flute Channel thank you for the advice. Sadly, I am only 17 and can't afford lessons. I already take the violin and piano, and my parents refuse to pay for any more. I am very committed to music and would like to challenge myself to see if I could possibly join marching band next year. I will definitely frequent this channel a lot

      I'm self taught too but I've played for three years so one thing I would say is DONT ignore scales!! I play violin too so you can use the same scale sheet music for flute (a few adjustments for the octaves will be made) but that is so necessary for flute!!!!:)

    very helpful. But I have no idea what you mean about colours. I've never heard of that. Can you explain?

    • @andreagutierrez7674
      @andreagutierrez7674 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Color refers to the quality of sound made by the flute. Like a tone that is airy, soft, intense and so on. Some like associating these different tones to certain colors (airy is blue, soft is pink). Every player has a different "color" when they play the flute, and as she mentioned in the video, it's all about experimenting and finding which color is most suitable for you, your playing, and the piece. Hope this helped!

    Allow me to vent...
    So my flute actually doesn't play low notes no matter how hard I try. Sometimes I get lucky, but most of the time it's all airy-sounding and just doesn't work at all no matter how much effort I put in. One day at school we were doing pep band at our flex time and I realized I forgot my flute at home so I asked to borrow one. I tried a low C to see what would happen, and it actually came out in full sound, no effort put in at all. I wanted to keep it. That day I come home and try a low C on my flute again. Nothing. Nada. Airy-sounding. Whistley sounding. Terrible. I really need repairs done too because I have a bunch of ripped pads. Maybe that's the problem? Ugh I want a new flute so bad...
    I've also been playing for 4 years.

    • @Tubluer
      @Tubluer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bad pads and leaks can definitely do this. Also student flutes are easier but lack in other ways.But you knew that I spoze.
