      A very incorrect belief tho.
      Your spell casting focus is a holy symbol or emblem.
      The PHB clearly says “By 2nd level, you have learned to draw on divine magic through meditation and prayer to cast spells as a cleric does”.
      You have a Channel Divinity in a game where divinity is understood to mean energy from the upper plains.
      Paladins are still just jock warlocks that work with the churches. That being said a Paladin’s oath can just tie to a pantheon instead of one god. Clerics specialize, Paladins don’t need to.

      @@anoneamose4866 "The PHB clearly says *blah* *blah* *blah* " I really hate to do this to you, because I'm sure you're probably a nice guy, but this just has to be said. Is the PHB your daddy or something?
      It doesnt matter how the PHB tells you to make/play a character. The whole point of the game is to make it your own and play who you want to play. You can absolutely be a paladin that's basically just a normal knight who's sworn an oath, and flavor your spells as just standard actions and abilities. As long as you're still adhereing to the mechanics you can do whatever you want. Yes your divine smite is still a divine smite, and is thus going to have the same applicable and affectable effects, but that doesn't mean you can't flavor it to just be a normal heavy strike or some kind of For Honor esque special attack. At the end of the day adding flavor is one of the best parts of making a character, especially after you've played a bunch of basic cookie cutter characters and want to try something different. Not every rogue needs to be sneaky, not every druid needs to be a forest-hugger, and not every Paladin has to be religious.

    • @anoneamose4866
      @anoneamose4866 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @Mal Masterson first. Don’t say you really hate to do something and then be demeaning. Its disingenuous and is immediate cause for me to give your point of view less consideration.
      Second. The point is to give some reason to how the class is able to work.
      You tell me how making a promise to nothing gives you actual magical powers that overcome the magical defenses fiends and monsters might have. If you want to play a guy that just hits really hard, then play barbarian or brute fighter and give yourself a code of honor. We are talking about an ability that leaves you if you don’t hold up your end of the roleplay. “You won’t help the innocent? You lost your paladin powers”
      Go ahead. Explain to me how breaking a promise you made with yourself in the mirror would take away your ability to hit a guy really hard. I’ll wait.
      And also. Since making an oath to the air can give me power, then what stops me from just making an Oath of Selfishness and now I have power for myself to benefit me as I see fit and as long as I take care of myself I have it and I made it to myself and will never take it away from myself.
      Yes its fantasy, but it needs a code or back bone to support it and give it value. If there are no rules or explanations at all, then the story loses meaning and texture. Making a promise to nothing grants you nothing.

    • @malmasterson3890
      @malmasterson3890 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@anoneamose4866 First of all, yes you are correct that it does sound like I'm being disingenuous, and there's not much I can do about that considering we dont know eachother personally, and I really don't care if you don't take my words into consideration, because that's up to you. I'm just providing a counterpoint, and decided to add a funny joke in there. I just got done watching some Hazbin Hotel stuff, I was in a jovial mood, and I thought it was funny.
      Second, yes I can explain that. I never said that the oath is to yourself. It is to whomever or whatever you want, because you as the player make that decision based on what's available to you. I literally stated that you should still adhere to the mechanics of the game (unless their DM allows/says otherwise). Meaning that if say you make an oath of conquest to a king, and you do something that the DM deems isnt in line with that oath based on the one you toom, then they have the power to warn you and/or take it away from you depending on the situation, and say something like "the king deems you a traitor and puts a bounty on you. Your subclass features will be disabled for the time being until you make another oath or repair your current one". You're saying this as if there isn't a player who's job is to know their players, create the story, and handle rulings in their game. It doesnt matter who the oath is sworn too. If your character wants to make an oath to themselves because they want to be a better person or something, that's fine, and I've had players do that before.
      Third, The backbone is the mechanics of the game itself, as I stated before, I'm not saying that his spells are no longer spells, that his divine smite is no longer doing divine damage, or even that what his oath says to do doesn't matter. Just that if they want to flavor it a certain way, they can, as long as they still adhere to the mechanics built into the system. In fact, if they want to make a mechanical change (i.e. homebrew or UA), then I'll consider it depending on the circumstances, but that's just me.

      One of my NPC's who was intended to be a villian was a pretty extreme Oath of Vengeance paladin who was also the captain of the guard in the area the campaign took place. By the end he didn't question his oath but rather his means to carring out said oath. Realizing vengeance doesn't have to mean slaughtering every criminal for even the most minor of crimes but is rather misdeeds just being punished accordingly and he becomes a genuinely good person by the end

    6:52 My goliath champion fighter basically did this when my party desperately needed a double long rest (we were super exhausted) and ended up in a tavern that was run and patronized almost solely by tieflings.
    The staff had treated us pretty coldly at first, but I had a feeling that their attitude was because they were used to a certain regular clientele and were wary of strangers suddenly showing up. Plus certain members of my party were starting to get a bit rude, so another party member and I were careful to be extra polite. Then without explaining what my thinking was, I gave one of the staff double what I owed for my meal. Pretty much all the players at the table were incredulously telling me that I didn’t need to pay that much and I said, “I know. I want to.”
    The staff started to warm up to us after that, and we were even able to learn more about the social hierarchy of the city / dimension we were stuck in. Turns out that in this particular setting, tieflings and aasimar (there was one in the tavern by this point) were considered to be on the lowest rung of the social ladder, while giant-kin, like my goliath and another player’s firbolg, were on the highest rung. Certainly helped to further explain the staff’s attitude toward us!

      Paladins are still just jock warlocks that work with the churches. That being said a Paladin’s oath can just tie to a pantheon instead of one god. Clerics specialize, Paladins don’t need to.

  • @ShadowNinjaMaster93
    @ShadowNinjaMaster93 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    That first one doesn't really add up. By that logic fighters can't be knights because they couldn't swear an oath without getting the ability to SMITE and suddenly just be a Paladin.
    That and other classes swear oaths as well, and their powers come from a very different source (See Druids and Warlocks)

    • @tmec8979
      @tmec8979 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Knights don't necessarily have to be holy or use holy magic. They only have to be warriors of a nation, fight for King and country, or fight in the name of a deity. Just because they fight in the name of a deity doesn't mean they have to swear an oath. My personal issue with the first one is that, in the Paladin class, you get your oath at level 3 and it mentions that the previous levels were preparation for this oath. Bit odd, but maybe it's just you fully making your promise, which has been building up over time and been possibly fueled by a god for their own purposes. As for warlocks, they do not swear an oath, they make a pact, which is basically a business deal. And for druids, they're moreso just protectors of the environment or people who can control nature.

  • @sethdunlap27
    @sethdunlap27 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So basically Paladins take an oath of some sort. After a certain amount of time, some diety will notice you and give you part of their power? I'm an absolute DnD noob, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @tmec8979
      @tmec8979 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it depends on how you flavor it. The oath could be entirely out of your own emotion and force of will i.e. Charisma, or it could be a god blessing you like how it would bless a cleric, or it could be both, with a god noticing the oath you made and blessing you as well, possibly because your oath aligns with their domains or morals, or because they need you to fight their enemies.
