  • The Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile State Historic Site actually consists of two sites telling the story of the Cold War years in North Dakota. They are the Oscar-Zero Missile Alert Facility and the November-33 Launch Facility. They are the last remnants of the 321st Missile Wing, a cluster of intercontinental ballistic missile launch sites that were spread over a 6,500-square-mile area around the Grand Forks Air Force Base. The Oscar Zero Launch Control Center and the November-33 Missile Facility played an integral part in the Cold War in North Dakota and the world. This site is the last launch control center intact with the top-side of November 33 missile facility left intact.

    I had over 200 missile alerts at Whiteman AFB using the Minuteman Man II. Whiteman still has the Oscar Lauch Control Facility open to the public. I went back there about 30 years after my last alert and the smell came rushing back as we went down on the elevator.
    The Facility Managers, Security and maintenance personnel were great and were very appreciated by the launch crews.
    Very nice job by tour moderator and special thanks for the video.

    I was stationed at Malmstrom AFB, Montana from 1969-1972. Was in missile communications. Most of our work was on maintenance down in the capsule. We came from the base to do the work. Long days as some of the LCF`s were 100 miles or more away. Did enjoy a good hot meal prepared by the cook at times.

    Worked those sites for about 8 years as a Facility Manager (FM). When I worked them they were called Launch Control Facilities. Were not as nice as they are now. There were some mistakes in her presentation but only those who actually worked the sites would know. Outside lights were not kept on all the time, unless the outside temp got below -15 degrees and that was to make sure the lights would lite and the bulbs didn't break. Flight security controller is the person who authenticated with the crews, not the maintenance crews coming on site.

    The Tour Guide was excellent. Very Professional, thorough, and with the right touch of human interest (like the funny murals);
    These Tour Guides for these nuclear facilities must go through rigorous training and retraining.
    Count on the military to do it right. They reflect well on the history of critical nuclear weapons facilities!

    I like the 70s-80s North-American interior style wooden panels around this site, even the microwave is equipped with it. Gives warmth to the environment.

    I actually worked on this Launch Facility. Was stationed at GF AFB 1979 to 1982 and was an EMT Team Chief before advancing to Quality Control. Worked at mostly all Launch Facilities and missile sites. I repaired electronic systems.

    I was at Malmstrom AFB 74 to 79 as a missile launch control officer. The top side facility was quite basic and food provided was very dependent on cook to make something edible from frozen pre-prepared. The personnel on station made all the difference. In particular the Facility Mgr (FM) ran the topside and set the tone of quality of life while there. Can’t say today it was “good”times.

    I took this tour several years ago with a different guide. Two things stuck with me afterward. First, the computer equipment was truly archaic. A drum memory was used for the central storage device. Second, the team of two missileers was often coed. It was a source of worry for some spouses who knew that their loved one was locked up for 24 hours with another person of the opposite sex.
    The tour is definitely worth the trip.

      Was a Minuteman II ILCS and Minuteman II ARSIP Crew member back in the 1980s at Malmstrom AFB MT. The control system in the LCC was basically 1960s technology. Between the electrical hum of the equipment, status change alarms and the noise of the air conditioning system pumping cold air into those equipment racks - I lost about 30% of my hearing. After changing over with the off going crew and assuming the Alert, we changed into our real "alert uniforms". Sweatpants and Sweatshirts. Normally the on-duty crew member sat up front at the Commander's Console. I can remember having two T-Shirts, a heavy Sweatshirt and my extreme weather Parka on and still be freezing cold because the air If you lost cooling air to the equipment racks, and could not start the backup system (EACU) - you had to shutdown the capsule down because it would not take long for those equipment racks to begin overheating and potentially have fires inside them.
