    FUN FACT: Lost 12 pounds throughout my island travels within 28 days venturing the Philippines, without ANY consideration of diet! There was some distance walking, but nothing at the pace of fitness. Am guessing an absence of processed sugars and preservatives (minus Red Horse and Tanduay! ) but it remains a positive mystery. Keep up the good reporting!

    For those that have never been to the Philippines, or other third world countries, the lack of infrastructure will probably come as a big shock. Roads that aren't maintained, regular interruptions in basic utilities, Inernet speeds that will remind you of the old dial-up days, and a general lack of amenities that you take for granted in the West. The Philippines is not just a destination, but a state of mind. 😉

Stray animals will rip spread any trash bags open and dumpsters were not a thing....We had 1 blue trash US residential can for a 5 story apartment building that I stayed in....They simply told me to line the back of the building with my trash and it would be picked up by collectors. Different to say the least.

    I live in northern europe. I have been in the Philippines a number of times. For me the great things with the Philippines is to not have freezing degrees outside 4-5 months a year, friendly people who actually talk to each other (up here people are very reserved) and that you can help people who are really in need - homeless in the street, help an orphenage or something similar.

    Hi Pea, good evening. I actually understand foreigners not being able to own land in the Philippines. The way I look at it is if a bunch of foreigners buy up the cheap costing land in the Philippines 🇵🇭, Filipinos may not be able to afford any land for themselves. When you have a shortage of land available the price of land skyrockets. So I agree the Philippines 🇵🇭 are doing the right thing for its people. In reality, every country should look out for their own citizens first. That's my opinion, good or bad.

      My brother in law farms 600 acres there. Cheap land is a myth. He just bought another 12 acres at $8600.00 USD an acre. Higher than prime Iowa corn land.

    • @amossnowdaharleyman9179
      @amossnowdaharleyman9179 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Cheap land myth: Father in law has beachfront property next to a resort.14 acres. He turned down $340,000.00 USD offer..... In their culture land has more value than gold(it's an island nation) and is to be held for future generations. There is "cheap" land: usually on the side of a mountain and so steep you can't walk on it. Condo's are cheap: if you like crazy high population densities.Single family homes are "cheap": if you're OK with your neighbor raising 20+ pigs on the other side of your fence.....

    • @Stetsonhatman
      @Stetsonhatman ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @George My Filipina wife and I just purchased 1 Hectare for a little farm. The lawyer told me that he was adding me (American with a permanent ACR card) to the new land title along with my wife. He further explained that in the event of her passing the land would be mine. I think this would prevent any of her family from trying to make a claim on the land but I don't really know what would happen if I would try to sell it later. ps. We used the services of a land agent - think realtor - she was paid 5% of the total purchase price paid for by the seller. We spent two months together looking to find the right fit.

    3. Move every few weeks until I have experienced a good variety of the Philippine culture and people

    1. Don't fall in love with a girl you never met in person.
    2. Force yourself to date at least ten girls in the Philippines before you pick one (or pick three), even if you think you already met the girl of your dreams. Don't worry, she's not going to drop you if she thinks you are meeting other girls. You may be surprised to find her trying harder to keep you.
    3. Don't try to hold her hand, kiss her, or hug her in public (except maybe a dark empty movie theater). PDA is not a thing there and it will make her uncomfortable. Save the action for the hotel room, you won't be disappointed.
    4. Don't take a province girl to a western or any non-Filipino restaurant. She won't know what to eat and won't like it. Best results will be had by feeding her fried chicken, rice, and more rice.
    5. Don't assume the girl you met is a distinct individual. She is part of a cult-like interdependent collective known as her family. She has no opinions or feelings or thoughts that were not provided to her by her mother or other family members. It's not that they are controlling her, it's like they are all one organism and each person is an appendage of that organism.

    As always, you're advice is really insightful & beautifully expressed Pea. The particular insight I hadn't considered is that the peoples of different islands in the Philippines behave differently because the culture is not uniform across the islands. I remember you have addressed this before but I had forgotten it. The cultural split that is always emphasised is the city/province difference and the poor/educated distinction. Now I understand that the Philippines is actually an archipelago of different cultures too & I need to be alive to this when I explore.

    All Valid Points Pea. Some people are just too in a rush to do things that they can't get out of their own way fast enough to take a breath and figure out all the things that could go right, and could go wrong.
    The reference to the Highlander was subtle, and I thought it was great.
    One thing out of this list you presented that should be first on the agenda for anyone looking to migrate to another country and culture should be to take an extended vacation to the place first, to get the lay of the land, the rhythm and flow of the life in the new place. It's like running the engine without oil, without it you won't be running on all cylinders for very long.
    A very wise man told me once that to calculate your success for something just figure out how prepared you are for your endeavor and take the opportunity when you are prepared and you will have success.

    Great video Pea. The best advice if considering moving to the Philippines is to slow down which you emphasized right away. Arrive with no strings attached because a Filipina will distort little Johnny into thinking for you. This is what you did as a teenager. Check out numerous locations, the prople, the social construct, night life, beaches, waterfalls, nature and proximity to the activities you enjoy doing. The easiest part will be finding a good Filipina that is who you truly want. Please don't be mesmerized by the beautiful Fililpina because she easily could be a wolf in sheep's clothing. Just like in the country you are coming from all women are diffetent. Good luck to all.

    Hi Pea and readers, I’m in the Philippines 🇵🇭 atm, 3 month long service leave.
    Listening to this, I have to say YES x 12. Spot on in every point. Trying to buy a salad or vegetables with your meal ….. hmmmmm good luck with that, sure you can go to the market and buy your own vegetables, and cook something at home, but going out to local street food or restaurants, not that easy.
    to expand on a couple of your points, my thoughts are:
    Find affordable accommodation for a month in a place that you want to explore, do day trips of 2/3 nights away from the base to learn about the area. Explore the Filipina around your base.
    Next month find another base and explore / repeat.
    Something to think about. 20:53

    You could probably do a full video on personal safety. I've got one tip aimed at us loner types. The sooner you develop a local circle of friends that care about you staying alive, the longer you'll live. Life insurance is fairly common in the west. In a poor country, the last thing you want to do is get yourself into a situation where you are worth more to the people around you dead than alive.

    You also don't know heat until you move to southeast Asia or the Philippines. It's been about 38° or so but with the humidity the feels like temperature is about 45°. Pea,
    Absolutely fantastic advice. It amazes me how many people don't plan or look into the ventures they think about. Moving from one city to another, or one state to another here in the US is nothing like moving to another Country all together. You touched on several of the biggest considerations ( economy, laws and restrictions ).
    I've been researching a few different Countries for a couple years and am finally down to 2, Costa Rica or the Philippines. I haven't been to the Philippines in years, but am planning a trip there this year. I'm fortunate enough to have an uncle that is from the Philippines and he and my aunt own property there ( my aunt was stationed there in the 60s ). This doesn't mean it will be easier to decide though. Only that I have some relatives there ( that I haven't seen in 35 years...lol ). So, come September, I'll be coming to visit.
    Thank you for the open and honest videos. It's a breath of fresh air.

    Hi Pea, I totally agree that the most important thing is to spend an extended period somewhere you're planning to move to and make sure it's a good fit. I think as well travelling around your destination country is a good idea as well, those who struggle with the heat may be better off in the mountains where it's a bit cooler.
    My previous travels in Thailand and Cambodia suggest that I would actually be able to lose weight there as the heat seems to suppress my appetite and I tend to eat less. There are days of course where it does just seem too hot to do anything but then you can always go for a stroll in the evening when it will be cooler. I definitely agree though that cooking your own food is the way to go to avoid excess sugar and fat.

    • @stub4958
      @stub4958 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think I'd lose weight as well. I grew up in the southeastern US, so I'm used to the heat and humidity, but would end up doing more than sitting behind a desk at work all day. I was in the PI in February for 3 weeks and lost 10 pounds.

    Hi sis. Great vid!! I'll add this advice. When you first get there, have arranged an air BNB or apt already lined up. Hotels are cheaper there but the costs quickly add up if you're island hopping. Eating out is another thing that will eat up your money. Pention houses are good options. Try to stay in 1 place for at least 6 weeks to absorb the local flavor before you move on to another spot that's at least 200km away. Good luck and Holy Father bless😊 1 more thing I should add. Some things in the Philippines are indeed cheaper than your country, SOME THINGS!! For your first month or 6 weeks. Have at least 3k USD in your pocket with access to another 2 available. The first month is ALWAYS the most expensive.

    Thanks, Pea very good video with a lot of helpful comments. I would say there's one you missed and that's with getting your finances in order with respect of taking money out of Filipina banks and not paying a charge for that. Like Wells Fargo has a savings plan where if you put enough money in when you go to take money out from a foreign bank you won't pay that fee. So that is something to think about as you'll be taking money out of banks quite a lot when you first get there and then throughout living there and not paying that $5 or $7 fee it adds up.
    Another thought I had is I know it's good to travel light but laptops phones that kind of thing. They're cheaper here in the states so buy yourself a decent phone and actually I would get one on the larger side because a lot of times Wi-Fi is not great and so you'll be using your data plan. So get a large phone even if you don't like it. You'll be glad you did.
    You touched on this on one of the points but I would say get in the best shape you can for your age and I don't mean all muscular but able to walk for long distances because when you first get to a foreign country you won't know the price of anything and when you go to take transportation it will cost a lot and so being able to walk can save you quite a bit of money.
    Anyway, it was a great video. That's my two cents about living in foreign country as I lived in southeast Asia about 20 years

    I must say, this video is excellent! I am fortunate to have a couple of friends from the Philippines, both residing in Cebu, who have consistently praised it as the ultimate destination for experiencing a somewhat Western lifestyle. It's true. One thing that often goes unnoticed by many is the potential challenges one might face regarding certain rights in the country. However, the main obstacle I perceive is maintaining a steady cash flow.
    After watching this video, I am considering the idea of relocating to Cebu to join my friends. The only hurdle I need to overcome is finding a reliable monthly income source, as I have yet to establish a retirement fund.
    Once again, I want to express my sincere appreciation for this fantastic video. It has given me valuable insights and considerations as I contemplate this life-changing decision.

    Great video, Pia! My Filipina wife and I have two countries- America 🇺🇸 and the Philippines 🇵🇭. Everything you say in this video is 100% true. If you plan to live in the Philippines 🇵🇭 someday, it is best to marry your Filipina there in the Catholic Church. This provides the greatest level of legal protection possible for a foreigner in the Philippines. Marriage is considered an indissoluble union in church law and civil law in the Philippines 🇵🇭. Have your marriage license certified in the Philippines! Later you can navigate the paper work for a permanent visa more easily if you are lawfully married to your Filipina. Also, if you get sacramentally married in the Catholic Church of the Philippines 🇵🇭 you can rest assured that any court isn’t going to entertain annulment proceeding very easily… if at all. If you get married in the Philippines, you better plan on staying married for LIFE! Cultural issues, home-sickness, and diet are all negotiable over time. Those are just facts of life to be dealt with… 😊
