The idea that Jack might have had a childhood which could make people sympathetic to him, but deliberately chooses not to acknowledge it, is an interesting interpretation. Usually a villain would leverage that to excuse their bad actions, but not in Jack's case. Instead of seeking sympathy, he seems to want to bury his past entirely, from changing his name from "Little Jack" to Big Jack, calling his child self a "pathetic buttered baker's boy" and going so far as to say that he's flat-out "dead".

  • @leonpepi6664

Interesting. I all see is people saying that Jack is a refreshing villain specifically because he is down right evil with no motives behind his villany, in a time where every villain tries to be complex. What I found cool about your analysis is that, although it shows a more "simpathetic" past for Jack, it still fits with the core idea of him being unapologetically evil because it's his choice to not be seen as "tragic" or "justified" due to his massive ego

A villain who has a sympathetic backstory is overdone, but a villain who could have been sympathetic but deliberately chooses evil within his own agency is oddly more compelling.

You know what? I firmly agree with that.
Some villains can be sympathetic if written well, but it has become overdone, and I want the “classically evil” villain to make a comeback, without any moral grayness.

Okay, this is the first time I ever heard someone talk about the nursery rhyme he was based on. And holy damn, the meaning behind it really reflects his personality. This movie is really like onions, so many layers.

Small Brain: Jack Horner is just evil and that's great.
Big Brain: Jack Horner has a sympathetic background, but is still evil as that is his choice to be so, preferring that over any pitiful, humble or poor upbringing he began with.
Galaxy Brain: Jack Horner is a study of rewriting one's own past and carrying forward a grudge in spite of growing far past it's sad origins. Making oneself out to be Bigger, Meaner, Better. And is nature is not a 'simple evil villain', but a 'complex simple evil villain'

Fun Fact: In the novelization of the film there was a scene where the Ethical Bug saw a vision of a world if Jack Horner won and saw Puss and Kitty as unsentient feral cats, mensing if Jack Horner won he would caused genocide to all talking animals and most likely all other magical beings

The novel also changed other scenes to make Jack more brutal, he burned some of his men alive due to them block his way when cutting down the flower field, he kept the ethical bug for much longer than in the film to torture him emotionally, and overall was a more serious villain, so novel Jack at least could be considered the most evil Shrek villain

I'm asking cuz i don't want to pay anything, and i don't find any free reading and i'm also kinda writing a "character analysis" about what a person like Jack could become.

His flashback was just a quick snapshot of his big hangup, not necessarily a showing of his actual youth experience. That cart didn't have any baking supplies in it after all, so maybe they were just doing a marketing tour and were on the tail end of their stamina for it. Having to hear their sprog repeat the same few lines every other minute for fuck knows how long is going to drain anyone's enthusiasm. Besides, fairy tales aside, this is effectively a retrain of medieval Europe we're seeing; just having the money to advertise your own business in a cart is quite a lot of it, especially if the owners feel they can let their workers go without supervision for however long this excursion was.

I agree with most of this. But I think Jack knew he got what was coming to him when he was dying. His exact quote is "What did I do to deserve this? I mean what specifically?" Implying he wants to know which exact bad deed he did that was the one that did him in.

I'd prefare to think, that Jack WAS growing up in luxory. This way there's NOTHING to excuse his actions. I'd rather think, that flashback was showing his perspective of events.

  • @AH-is5yg

Jack Horner's past was that he didn't get enough attention and wanted to be famous; however, he was unable to compete against fairy tales. He grew jealous of them. Even though he had a good childhood, wealth, a great upbringing and a mansion, but it wasn't enough for him. He wanted to go to the top.
It shows that even if he had a great hand in life and a great childhood, great family, rich, great business, and a great mansion but he can end up being horrible and cruel when they grow up. Because he was driven out of petty and selfishness. He couldn't let go. He chose this path.

If he was a magic the gathering card he be center on black mana, if you don't know black mana is the type of magic that means victory at all cost even if that victory would cost you something dear, spell that kill, sacrifice and even exploit death are the most common tools and that ideology lines up well, Jack very much plays this out by stealing magic power items and exploiting his own henchmen with little remorse, this is all for the simple gasp of power but he maintained a sense of control over this, honestly he is the type that is evil that lines up similar to lord shen the lyrics difference is he had no redeeming qualities.

I’ll fight you on that first comment on magic, he was not angry or hateful of magic. He was envious of much attention something magical could get specifically Pinocchio wanting to be a real boy but was a puppet; meanwhile he was already a real boy so shouldn’t the world be impressed by him? He was a born narcissist thus the lack of consciousness when the cricket showed up thinking only about how the cricket could serve him.
