OpenBSD and DWM: True Minimalism

  • I started using OpenBSD back in June, and quite honestly, I might be switching to FreeBSD here soon enough. I'm pretty sure DWM supports it, so that won't change. But while I'm still on OpenBSD, enjoy!

    I like spectrwm better for the following reasons:
    * better multi-monitor management
    * built-in ability to push slave windows to master incrementally (not push patch needed)
    * built-in gaps
    * built-in ability to switch back and forth between two workspaces, along with...
    * ... the ability to cycle through all workspaces with open windows.
    No mod+0 to see all open windows together like with dwm, though.
    One text file and you're set up. I think spectrwm is underused and underrated. It's really perfect for my use-case.
    Thanks for your channel, btw, it's great!

    @12:00 FWIW, you can simplify the volume command to just use a single sed invocation
    sndioctl -n output.level | sed 's/\.//;s/^0*//;s/.$/%/'
    The same ";" chaining can be done with some of the other scripts to execute all the sed-statements in one sed invocation.

      I don't do VMs, so I decided to wipe my OpenBSD install and use FreeBSD instead. I have the SSD inserted in my Ultrabay set to mount as /home on OpenBSD, and it worked great and was fast. I switch the FreeBSD today and I get my X server set up and realize something critical - my drive is formatted as FFS2, and there is no FFS2 support on FreeBSD. So you know what I have to do? I have to go back to OpenBSD, copy the files onto my internal drive, format the Ultrabay SSD as ext4 or something, copy the files back to that, install FreeBSD again, copy the files onto my main drive again, format the Ultrabay drive to ZFS, then copy the files onto it. That'll teach me to be an OS hopper. Though I've actually been using OpenBSD since mid-June, I never got around to making a video, and when I did, it took me a while to publish it.

    And I thought I was the only person who refuses to use FreeBSD due to its Devil mascot. Who in FreeBSD World though it would be a good idea to use a symbol of evil to represent the OS? No wonder Theo left that group. Puffy is way more cool! and relates to the defensive aspect of the OS.
    I use CWM on OpenBSD because it is efficient and simple to use. Along with fvwm, it comes with the default install, no need to pkg_add it.

      I barely spend any time configuring anything.
