    The X Window System is the graphical interface. By default, OpenBSD uses FVWM as the window manager and it is very Morif-esque unless the user customizes it.

    • @gmt-yt
      @gmt-yt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can see at ?t=719 that he's running something called xenodm so it's probably a fork or a clone of fvwm (appearance-wise,. it looks /exactly/ like fvwm). Which, yeah, looks rather "motif-esque" or, put another way, about like HP-UX about 25 years ago, but without the pretty VUE control panel, icons and color scheme, and therefore not nearly as pretty. I'm sure it's just there as a placeholder and fallback for whatever reasonable window manager you want to run, or in case you don't want to run one at all, but need to very occasionally run an X server to get some random task done.

    • @gmt-yt
      @gmt-yt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That stated it is absolutely possible to use fvwm for anything you need to get done in X11 even on modern linux, I'm sure. But probably you're just going to end up using it as a container for a bunch of qt/gtk widgets unless you've decided to go full penny-farthing with your rig.

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gmt-yt xenodm is a display manager, like the old xdm. A display manager is something that will allow the user to login and, then, interact with a window manager.

    openbsd used to work pretty well for me but if i try to install it now it cant find ethernet connection and neither my wifi in the installer. Both of those worked before. It also cant find the sets because the usb flash drive with the openbsd installer somehow disappears from the system, so I cant finish the installation. Well, at least haiku is working for me

      Wifi support is generally considered a problem across all BSD variants. Even FreeBSD which has the best support for wifi cards in laptops lags way behind in supporting popular wifi cards in many laptops.

    • @jaronnamir8868
      @jaronnamir8868 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had that same problem a few times when trying to install OpenBSD on hardware, VMs and laptops for some reason the first install would install no problem, other times it would give that same issue of no ethernet when connected to a cable. As Youssef pointed out the Wifi support can be finicky which is why I don't install to laptops anymore.
      There is a remedy I don't have the link anymore but it did solve the no ethernet error detected issue. I believe it's on a reddit post from a few years back when I found it last year.

      Take the default window manager as a kind of warning. If the user is unable to deal with a simple window manager change, it's just not ready to use the system.

      You don't want that, imagine 10px being rescaled to 11px... It'd be either blurry or have some double rows/columns. It's just bad. I've actually done that on Linux with some x server tinkering and it was awfully ugly. It may work better in the future with 8k+ monitors, but it'll never look ok on full hd.
