You are way wrong in the Luffy-Ussop deal. Ussop was in the wrong due to his own fears. After Sanji's kick, Luffy accepted but Ussop doubled down. Both Ussop in Water7 and Sanji on WCI are in the wrong, are betraying the Strawhats. Luffy may be more mature, but they are on the wrong.

There are a lot of times where a main character made for children and teenagers can feel like cheap self-inserts or too edgy for adults. Luffy is not that. Heck, I'd even say that adults love Luffy way more than teenagers do. He has an emotional maturity that only an adult can truly appreciate. His moral compass somehow works perfectly for both normal and cynical people.

    • @FlowerEmblem
      @FlowerEmblem 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +64

Oh man completely agree to this. It took me awhile to wind my head around liking the protagonist of a shounen like this the most compared to other characters, because too many times I've enjoyed a side character more, or the main character has felt like a self-insert, too "good", or too "perfect" per se. But though Luffy is simple minded he's not a simple character. And he's his own character as well instead of being a projection.

It's crazy too. In 2020 I came into this series super reluctantly. It took a couple close friends and family to convince me to give it a chance. One of the big things that added to my reluctance back thing was Luffy looked like someone I wouldn't enjoy, someone who seemingly never changed, idk where I got that in my head, but I can say after 4 years not only did Luffy change overtime, he helped change me, and I'm so glad I actually gave the series a chance.

Someone who will laugh with us, party with us, see us through our darkest times not even caring why and will march straight into hell with us. One thing I noticed with Luffy not listening to people's pasts is that he usually doesn't listen if he's being told about someone's past by a different person rather than hearing it from the source. One exception is Brook, but Franky and Robin were directly relaying what Brook had told them himself and not just telling their own version of the story from their perception. Luffy doesn't like to hear about what someone has done or how they feel from an outside source, he only cares if he hears it directly from them. That's part of why in Water 7/Enies Lobby he was so determined to talk to Robin directly and hear the truth from her. It's part of why he doesn't give two shits about rumours and judges people based on his own interactions with them. He isn't interested in hearing about Nami's situation and feelings on the matter from anyone else but Nami.

This is true. People also ignore the fact that Luffy already had the cliff notes for both times.
When they met, Nami told Luffy directly that she hated pirates because they killed someone important to her. She also talked about the money she needed and it was clear it was for something important. That's all he needed to know, all the other details about who Bellemere was, the regrets Nami had in regards to her and how Nami and Arlong made the deal. Those didn't matter, all that mattered was that Nami asked for help in the end.
On Fish Man Island, Jinbei tries to tell him the story of Fisher Tiger, Otohime and the hatred between fishmen and humans, but Luffy knew the main points.
He saw that hatred with his own eyes at the slave auction and he made his feelings on the subject very clear. Hancock also told him Fisher Tiger was a Fishman who rescued the slaves. Knowing all the complicated emotions pre and post that event wouldn't change what Fisher did.
As for the queen, Shirahoshi made it clear she was there to visit a grave. He had already met her father and her brothers at that point so Otohime's existence and kindness wasn't a surprise given all that Luffy has witnessed. So, Jinbei's story about all the complexities behind the two approaches to the situation were irrelevant to Luffy because Hordi, the person of today, did not believe in either. I think if Jinbei had presented the story more from his perspective about why he was who and where he was, Luffy would have been more attentive.
Luffy listened to Yamato's story, but he was also in a rush given the battle. Luffy didn't have time (nor did he want) to listen to an overly detailed story, especially when Otama already told him Ace had come to Wano.

it's one of my favorite things that Luffy constantly subordinates himself to greater knowledge. when Chopper says he needs an ingredient for medicine Luffy finds it. when Nami says to raise the sails Luffy raises them. when Law makes a plan Luffy usually doesn't actually follow it but he does his best. he demands complete freedom but he recognizes when others understand things better than him and will follow their lead.

Honestly, Luffy is one of the most emotionally intelligent protagonists out there. And there's lots of examples:
In Nami's case, at that time she resented pirates, if Luffy just invaded Arlong Park and knocked him down she could think it was just a stronger pirate fighting for a good navigator, but instead he allows her dictate the compass, and only acts when SHE asks for help. It shows her that he does care about HER.
With Robin, he insists to save her, and when she says she has made up her mind he basically says "ok, you can choose that, but when you´re free to ponder your options. If there wasn't any of this, what would you really wish?"
And with Sanji... He knows damn well our favourite cook has self-desctructive/sacrificial tendencies, so he basically puts the weight of his dream on his shoulders, as saying "ok, if you're gonna give up on your dream so do I, without you I won't be the king of pirates". It shows Sanji that he and his dreams matter, more than positive outcomes of his sacrifice.

    • @bradleybourgeois4710
      @bradleybourgeois4710 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

Totally agree. One instance where shows his emotional intelligence outside his crew is when he first refuses to work with Momonosuke and the samurai. This wasn’t because he didn’t care about their plight, but recognized that Momonosuke, the prince of Wano, was letting his vassals do all the work for him and not contributing even though he wants to defeat Kaido and avenge his father. So, he basically encourages the young prince to take care by having him ask for his help, to help the boy grow into the man he wants (being like his father, Oden). It’s a somewhat softer version where he tells Sanji to tell his captain what he actually wants during their second reunion in Whole Cake Island, mainly without the kicking. As when Momonosuke himself asks for Luffy’s aid, he gives it, because the prince is asking for it, not his vassals.

There's a line from Arlong Park that's always stuck with me. He's fighting Arlong and flails a sword at him until Arlong knocks it out of his hands, commenting on how shit he is at it. Luffy responds with, and I'm paraphrasing here:
    L: "You're right. I can't swing a sword. I can't cook. I can't navigate. I can't even lie."
A: "Then what can you do?"
L: "I can kick your ass."
This might sound like just a cool one-liner and it is, don't get me wrong, but I think it's also a really important part of what makes Luffy such a strong friend and leader. He is very aware of his faults as a person and instead of attempting to cover for his own weaknesses, he surrounds himself with people that he trusts with his life that can cover them. He puts complete faith in his crew and they, without fail, rise to the occasion. This happens all the time. Nami navigating them through insane weather conditions, Zoro vowing to never lose a fight again (we don't talk about Kuma, the Pacifista, or Kaido), Usopp learning to swallow his fear and step up to a challenge, Chopper saying "I only wanted to be human to make friends. Now I want to be a monster that can help Luffy." Hell, even Buggy helps Luffy in Impel Down after he just thought to himself he'd take his treasure mark and ditch him, just because Luffy believed so strongly that Buggy would help him. And whenever Luffy shows his pride in his crew, you can literally see them glow because of it. It's my favorite depiction of the power of friendship in fiction. When someone you care about, who has fought so hard for you in every arc, believes in you that much, you can't help but try to be the best you can be for them.

Learning the backstory of him, Ace, and Sabo reframed a lot of his behavior to me. He’s a goofball, dumb, and impulsive, but he’s not unaware. He always finds a way, even if his knees are knocking and his palms are sweating and his bones are broken and he's positive that the next hit he takes will kill him, if someone on the crew tells him to do something, he does it. And that proves that he's always been a brave warrior of the sea, and Luffy could tell all the way back then.

To me the Straw Hats have a very actually-anarchistic or at least flat-power-structure thing going on. They all trust each other to act independently or to step up when their area of expertise is in play. Even with Luffy, the Straw Hats have no hesitation in telling him off or punching him in the head if they think he's about to do something dumb, AND HE DOESN'T MIND!

Luffy is my favourite, I just love him. He seems like a really "Standard MC" on the surface, but his "Heart" is golden. There is a sense of "Feeling home" and "Feeling safe" when he is around or arrives.
I know how the strawhats and the townsfolk feel, because I feel the same as them. And when Luffy beats the foe, I get all happy, as everyone else.
    It's so captivating!

I will never forget the shock I had after the pudding reveal
Not because she wasnt acting suspicious before but the moment Luffy trusted her I was certain I could too.
So that confused me extremely until the second reveal with her came up and I understood.
My Dudes ability to look through people really played against himhere.
It wasnt that he suddenly couldnt but that he was just too good at it.
Puddings "evil" side is also a persona made to survive the BM Family so Luffy accidentally looked past the surface persona AND past the persona trying to trick them and ended at the traumatized and hurt little girl at the core. Thus she managed to pass the vibe test

The thing I feel you didn't pointed out in your (otherwise excellent) analysis of the Usopp scene, is that the reason why Luffy was being so blunt about abandoning the Merry is because he was as distraught as Usopp was at that moment. Sure, he didn't understood the underlying complex of inferiority that was agitating Usopp's anger, but he was quick to respond with his own anger because he felt the same way about leaving Merry behind and he was just putting a front of carefreeness during that discussion because he had already internalize that Iceberg was 100% correct when he told him that the safety of the crew was the captain's responsability and that Merry was no longer in shape to carry the Straw Hats onward. Water 7 is a brillantly crafted flow of successive tragedies, and the fact that Ussop wasn't there to hear Luffy's initial reaction to Merry's condition, and Luffy's poor attempt at playing it cool when he was himself extremely emotive about the whole ordeal was a big part of what led to this clash.

You see about that consistently being Number 1. It's precisely because Oda is just so d4mn good at sculpting Luffy's character. He seems blank but when you just got an inch depth of him you realized, he's gold. And that was only an INCH! you can't help but treasure and adore him because of that! Oda is great at establishing Luffy's character. We love him so much because there has never been a conflict of morality with Luffy, he does what he wants! He's a pirate! But he's not evil! He just takes his freedom and run with it! He's not complicated nor he wants to be complicated, unlike in some other shounens where morality is often a conflict of interest in which case sometimes the audience is not always on the MC's side. Ex: Naruto, HxH, even Dragon Ball, or Bleach, or any other shounen! The conflict of interest often times involve morality or simply power.
In Luffy, we found someone who has no interest what's your morality is, he's just a true free soul, and he does what he wants. And deep down, THAT'S what everybody wanted in life. We don't want to do good deed just because it's what's right, we don't want to do bad deed either! We just want to be free and easy!
Remember on Sabaody arc, when Keimi was abducted and auctioned, there was no break-in fights. NO. The SHP was ready to follow the system, the rotten evil system, to BUY Keimi back. They're essentially participating in the evil slavery by buying their friend back from slave traders because they don't want to make problems. Did any of us think that's crappy? NO. Because they're pirates! They can do whatever the fck they want, the issue of morality is not on them but on the disgusting abductors. When they failed to buy Keimi back and a Celestial Dragon shot Hachi, Luffy, a newly arrived 'Idgaf/Igotnochillifyouhurtmyfriend' lil b4stard, PUNCHED THE FCK OUT OF that pig's face. And you know what his crew said? "Yeah, that's kinda expected."
Luffy is true sense of freedom. Not a senseless violence and plunder. But also not the overly kind and generous one. He's the embodiment of that idea, that's why he's always number one. I still remembered how Rayleigh asked Luffy about whether he was sure he could conquer the sea?
Luffy grins and says "I don't want to conquer anything, I just want to be the most free man in the seas." and that sets a fire in all fans' hearts. I'm sure even if Luffy said he wanted to conquer something at that moment, his fans would still love him. But he said that instead, that love turned into a passion. A hot burning passion that screams "YES!!! BE FREE!!!!" that exists in every human's heart. Oda did well with Luffy's characterization. Remember, Luffy never fight for complicated reasons. his reasons had always simple like "You make my friend cries." or "For Food." It's always the most simple and basic reason but done so beautifully. Like, in other shonens, those reasons are also prevalent, but pulled in such a fcking cheap way that it makes MC feel like a simp (looking at you Naruto) and the crying character feels useless (yeah, Sakura). But Oda managed to pull it so intricately beautiful that crying is not just for the sake of crying or sadness, when a friend of Luffy cries, it's because they've been too strong for too long. Nami's beg for help on Arlong park. Robin's cry that SHE WANTS TO LIVE in Enies Lobby. All of them are people who had been strong and holding strong on their own for far too long so they broke down. You don't see them as "Annoying people who can only ask for help" you can only sigh and say "Finally you ask for our help" kind of way. That's DIFFERENT. As a result, when the MC helped, you didn't feel "Ugh" but instead. "LET'S GO!!!"
Remember how Vivi cried and said she wanted to save everyone? In non-typical shounen fashion, Luffy said "People died" meaning not everybody could be saved. He was not kind or generous, he's realistic and always live in the moment. What's important to him is the people in front of him, the background NPCs are not his concern, why should he be concerned? He's a pirate. He's not going to be trapped in one place just because everybody needs help, because he knows everybody always have a problem. Some shonen-typical fans will argue and hate his sudden heartlessness, but that's not sudden at all. You don't see him caring for everyone, there's always a condition for him to care, even on off-chance he ended up saving everyone from before Alabasta, that was only a coincidence, he never intentionally help anyone. He just helped people on the basis of his interest. He helped Zoro because he thought Zoro was cool, in Syrup he helped Kaya because only she could provide him ship in that island, in Baratie he fought Don Krieg because Baratie provided him food as a restaurant, by Arlong Park he was already familiar and close with Nami so he gladly fought for Nami ONLY when she ASKED for it in return he took Nami officially as his navigator, in Drum Island he didn't fight Wapol for the people, he fought Wapol because he was disturbing the peace of the doctors who treated him and his friends. Luffy IS NEVER COMPLETELY selfless, he grew up in a trashheap, fought beasts to survive. He's only selfless to people he held close, others? Not a fcking chance. But isn't that everyone? He's everyone's man. He's the true everyone's man.

One point of Luffy's growth that I find so compelling is the way Oda shows the growth of his leadership skills and his idea of what a leader should be. Throughout his first few journeys he's encountered terrible leader one after another. Morgan, Don Kreig, Wapool, and Crocodile. While he understands these guys are like the exact opposite of what a good leader is, I think he truly doesn't understand what a leader represents until he meets Vivi. Vivi's conviction towards her people, the way she disputes things in a level headed manner, the way she puts her all out for what she believes will benefit her people, her willingness to do whatever to find a way to help her followers, and most of all the courage to stand up no matter how difficult or scary the challenge. These are all things Luffy takes in and learns from, he continuously applies the lessons he learned from Vivi and its shown to us in the most impactful way with Momonosuke. If you think about the situation Momonosuke and Vivi were in, they're nearly identical. Both are powerless royalty driven out of their country by a tyrant ruining their country that wishes to reclaim it. But with Luffy and Vivi the dynamic between the two is moreso Luffy learning from Vivi about what makes someone a good leader and directly compare that to Luffy and Momonosuke's dynamic. Luffy is the one constantly telling Momo how to act like a leader, he is the one doling out the wisdom, he is the one constantly criticizing him as a leader and to be a man worthy of leading the men of Wano. One of my favorite moments in One Piece is when Luffy yells at momo for just being a figure head and telling him to speak up for himself. That if momo really is the leader of all these great men that he should act like one regardless of his age. One Piece is truly PEAK!

I completely agree with you when it comes to Luffy and the Straw Hats. The Straw Hats really act like how a real-life pirate crew did. For the most part, pirate crews were democracies where everyone had a say. The only time when the captain truly took charge was during battle. And we 100% see that with Luffy. Later on, especially post-time skip he stops shouting "I'm the captain" as a way to get people to listen to him. But it does happen in WCI in a battle situation. Outside of battle, Luffy really defers to the person whose expertise it is on the subject. He lets Nami navigate, he lets Chopper be a doctor, and he lets Sanji cook. Hell, most of the Straw Hats were leaders in their own right before joining. Robin was #2 of a criminal organization, Franky ran a gang, and Usopp, Jinbe, and Brook were all captains of their own ships/crews.

A rubber man who fight his opponents with his fists. But what I fell in love with was his sheer determination as he kept taking blows after blows and still stood firm against his enemy. This was my first impression of our hero.
Eventually I managed to get my hands on the manga and I have been following his story ever since. Until the end of the line and for the rest of my lifetime, Luffy is one of my favorite protagonist in fiction, the young boy whose faith in liberty, hope and joy keeps creating miracles.

I THANK you so much for touching on the whole Water 7 Usopp situation and comparing it to the WCI situation. I see so many people talk about how "Usopp betrayed Luffy" or "Who was in the wrong? Luffy or Usopp?" and its so annoying because they completely miss out on the whole aspect of why this conflict even happened. I LOVE the scene where they fought because it felt so real, realer than anything i've ever watched on TV with ACTUAL real life people, because this fight wasn't two ideologies clashing against eachother or something, but happend due to Pride. When Luffy told Usopp to leave if he didn't like his ways, he actually FORCED Usopp to leave. Usopp didn't have a choice to leave or not, which people don't understand. Usopp critized Luffy for abandoing the weak if it benefits him, so if Usopp would've stayed, he would be a complete hypocrite cus he would've done the same thing!! Luffy fucked up. He immediatly realized he fucked up and the best thing of it all, was that he grew from this fuck up!!! Seeing Luffy going fom beating the shit out of his BFF to not even lifting a finger in self defense against Sanji is such a beautiful thing to see and you explained it perfectly

Luffy’s existence as a sponge for everything that happens around is also reflected in his fighting style, where in G5 especially he copies and adapts the moves he’s seen others use into his own fighting style. His propensity to turn anyone into his friend also gives him a wealth of ways to fight and protect his friends

I was watching this one random anime scene and it's probably filler but in it Nami is scolded by Zoro for giving orders because she's not the Captain. Nami then retorts asking if he thinks Luffy is fit to give out orders and he agrees that Luffy isn't. Luffy who's been nearby and surprisingly listening to this conversation simply laughs, blushes and says "Really? Am I that great?" and despite it probably just being the usual Luffy comedic relief... it's interesting because of what Luffy says...
He's proud of being someone who's not fit to give out orders because he values liberty, freedom and personal agency that much. He doesn't want to give orders because he wants everyone around him to think and act for themselves. Maybe he's even proud that his crew dedicate undying loyalty to him and follow him despite him never giving out any formal orders as such... Of course, this is Pre-TS Luffy...
Post-TS Luffy does occasionally give out orders and commands to his crew but they are almost always validation and assurance for them to act on their own and handle their own situation in a way that benefits the side they are on.

Luffy's character development is one of my favorite parts of the story because it's not extreme. I don't know why people think that the only acceptable development is one where the character becomes a completely different person. If anything, such development is often poorly done and unrealistic. I also like that in One Piece "boy becoming a man" doesn't mean becoming bitter, cold, and emotionless. Oda really said fuck you to edge lords...

I'll be honest, I thought this fabled "Luffy Video" was just a concept that existed in our heads. Jokes aside back when I first saw your Sanji video I didn't realize I was going to be anticipating this video series so much. You're genuinely one of the best content creators Ive watched in a while. The number one Garp hater strikes again, keep up the good work!

I love how Luffy never needs or asks his crew to be strong, he only wants to be strong himself so he can protect them
They dont need to be useful (even tho they obviously often are for Luffys sake) to be valued, Luffy just has to like you 🙂

Wow! I wrote a thesis for my philosophy class just last week about why Luffy should be included among the sages for his embodiment of freedom and existentialist ideas.
Your videos were what inspired me to start looking at One Piece through a philosophical lens, and a main reason why I settled on choosing Luffy for that assignment.
Can't wait to see what you have to say about him!

Second, this video was honestly everything I could’ve wanted any more. I’m not gonna lie when I say that expectations were very high based on your past content. However it was still incredible, the analysis, the parts you chose to highlight, your own goofy editing, all of it was wonderful and I cannot wait for the next part.

in other words, i loved this analysis and am looking forward to part 2!

There’s a difference between being nice and being kind, and Luffy is the kindest person in the series. He just barely counts as nice, though. Being kind means to be honest, to be clear in your communication, and to always do the right thing no matter how that may look or make the other person feel.

One thing I love about Luffy in regards to his crew is that he has taught all of his crew members to love themselves. I think several members of the crew would be filled with self loathing if they had never met Luffy. In a way, he taught them all to make friends with themselves, and gave them a place where they could live their lives to the fullest

I've always felt a unique connection and love for Luffy that I've never experienced with any other fictional character. I've loved other characters over the years, but nothing even remotely close to Luffy. This dumb rubber dude feels like an actual friend of mine somehow. Which is why nothing hurt as bad as his post-marineford breakdown.
And after so many years of following One Piece to find out that he is literally the symbol of hope, liberation, freedom and romance for the entire world.
    Hats off, Oda.

such an amazing analysis! love it so much! certainly exceeded all expectations and made me so happy :D your analyses are the best and i cant wait to watch the 2nd part
id like to talk about the section where you talk about Luffy’s fight with Usopp, though. dont get me wrong, i agree with your conclusions, i just think you missed something in regards to Luffy - Luffy's own emotional turmoil.
when Luffy hears that the Merry cant be repaired from the shipwrights, he reacts with anger and denial (just like Usopp later that day) because he cares about the Merry. that is his nakama and they are telling him to abandon her? no way! he would never do that! (see: Nami, Robin, Sanji.) but then hes reminded hes the captain and would be putting the rest of his nakama in danger. so he makes the hard decision as the captain, because as much as Merry is their nakama, because unlike the rest of the crew, she is not a living being (he doesnt know about the Klabautermann at this point but even if he knew the point stands). but he is still grieving for her! his nakama is dying and theres nothing he can do about it. so when its time to tell Usopp the sad news, he deals with it like ripping off a band aid. he goes straight to the point, no feelings, just the cold hard truth. because thats how he deals with delivering sad news that deeply affect him as well (as seen in Wano when he tells Tama about Ace's death) because he is grieving and its hard for him too. Luffy doesnt like complicated things and dealing with his own grief is complicated. so he simplifies it. which is, unfortunately, not always the best way to go about it. and as a captain, it is his job to make his crew understand and agree on the decision he makes.
but he is not just a captain, he is human with emotions so when Usopp accuses him of not caring about the Merry, his nakama, it gets to him. because how could Usopp say that! he should know Luffy cares about his nakama dearly and would never willingly abandon them! so such accusation coming from Usopp of all people comes like the biggest gut punch. (id even compare it to as if Sabo were to accuse Luffy of not caring about Ace for failing to save him - because the Merry, just like Ace, is family (its not a perfect comparison, definitely a bit exaggerated, but i hope its enough to get the point across)) so of course Luffy loses composure and escalates. because Usopp hit him where it hurt most. im sure that if Luffy had been thinking calmly, he would have noticed the truth behind Usopp’s words. Usopp didnt mean it, he was just lashing out because he was hurting. but Luffy's inner turmoil clouded his judgement. and so it devolved into two hurting persons hurting each other.
Luffy is the captain and its his duty to be the steady rock for his crew in tumultuous times. but at that moment, forced to permanently part with one of his nakama (one of his greatest fears), he couldnt help but break.
(hope it makes sense, its like 1am here so forgive me if there are any mistakes or my rambling turns out to be nonsensical)
