    Great design!! I love that you build an actual mill not a CNC routing table . Are you planning to put your design somewhere? I would love to have your designs.

      +Tchefter Just Google (or use your preferred search engine) "backlash free coupling" and "lead screw thrust bearing" and you will get the information you are after. Its a lot of different types for sale at e.g. EBay.

    Looks wonderful! I guess the spindle is not tied to Mach3? The tach you showed in the video that were not wired up yet.. does it control the rpm closed loop? Any concerns on motor housing thermal expansion..?

      +Sangyoon Kim The spindle is not controlled by Mach3...yet. I would like to do that sometime down the road. I am using MachTach

      Dont confuse MachTach with Mach3, they are not related as far as I know. But it is just measures the rpm of the spindle. There is no control loop at all right now.
      As for the thermal questions, I am not worried about my motor getting hot. It is bolted to the aluminum frame and that will pull the heat away quite well. The whole spindle mount is acting like a heat sink and there is pleanty of air flow around the motor as well.
      I got side tracked on other projects and my work is in the process of buying a Haas Mini Mill. So I have stalled a little bit on this project. But I still plan on finishing it one day when. Most likely some other project will come up that will make me want to use this mill and that will motivate me to finish it.

    Very nice! Regarding the frame using aluminum extrusions, i see you used flat plates with bolts to join extrusions at 90 degrees. Did you use any additional support, like corner brackets at the inside of the joint? thanks

      They are half inch lead screws

      This project got a little side tracked. I used it at work and then it turned into a work fixture for about 2 years. I couldn't share anything about what we were doing with it because intellectual property.

    Does it use linear roller ways and a ball screw feed. I need to know where to find the roller linear ways for when i build mine.

      This model has supported shaft and ball bearings for the rails. It is cost effective but one day I would like to upgrade it. It also has precision acme thread and anti-backlash nuts. I got a lot of my parts for this build from surplus places or from my university cleaning out storage. I was collecting parts for the build for about two years and then designed a cnc around those parts.

    I am very curious how you built the spindle, I hate how all chinese spindles that are cheap are either requiring insane power phasing or doesn't go into low enough RPMs, so I wanted to make my own setup that sorta looks like yours, but I am wondering what bearings will do the job for as little runout as possible? I know you can get 150mm long collet shafts with near zero runout on amazon for 10$ so the question is basically where can one get bearings good enough for a spindle that dont cost a fortune? since the chinese spindles on ebay ironically aren't even worth fixing when the bearings break cuz it seems seperatly the bearings cost as much as they do already assembled in a spindle by someone in china :(

      The spindle is from a Taig Mini Mill. It is a good starting point and accepts any ER16 collet. Since it is a complete unit you can avoid a lot of worry about the bearings alignment and loads from cutting being transferred to the motor. Since the Taig spindle assembly has a stepped pulley on it, I can select which ratio I would like to use from the motor to the spindle. The motor also has a speed controller on it. But even with the speed control you are limited in how fast or slow you can run the motor efficiently. With the step pulleys i can pick ratio which lets me run the motor efficiently, and still get very slow or very high spindle rpm.
      Another advantage is if the cutting bit is slowed down while cutting the belt can slip on the pulleys, or even break. It is much cheaper to replace a small v-belt than the spindle or motor.

    Argh... i get heebie jeebies when you go poking around that spinning collet and those timing belts...
    It's just so darn dangerous that i can't help it :D

      +Mtaalas It is not actually that dangerous when you have been working around a machine like this for years. I understand exactly what can happen. Also, the video makes it look much closer than it really is. Another thing to consider is the timing belt is quite loose so even if my finger were to get caught (highly unlikely), the belt would stretch. There is also no cutting tool in the machine which makes it much safer.
      All that being said, I have plans to put a nice acrylic cover over the timing belts mostly to keep dirt out. Please be careful when working on machines like this. Be aware of your surroundings, how to cut the power, and wear safety glasses.
      I am actually much more concerned about having the electronic enclosure open to show the electronics. This is normally closed. The motors draw up to 3 amps, which is quite a shock. I have fuses built in, and this is normally completely enclosed.

    Are those Extrusion flat? With a tight strait ness tolerance?

      At the time of building this machine they were the straightest and flattest things I had access to. I now have access to better things. If you would like i will measure one on a AA lab grade granite surface.

    hello sir. how is the complete size of the maschine? because i want to build an milling maschine with a lot of z travel. all i could find before was videos of router machines an they have a small z travel.

      This machine is a hobby. I wanted a cnc mill for my personal projects. But many people do earn money from selling various cnc machines, or using them to manufacture parts.

      This machine was not designed to machine ferrous metals. It might be possible but it would not work very well.

      +Gavin Luis D'Mello The stepper motors on the X, Y, and Z axis are 280 OzIn Hybrid stepper motors from Probotixs. The spindle motor is an AmpFlow E30-150 dc motor. One nice thing about the spindle motor is AmpFlow makes 3 versions of this motor that all have the same mounting dimensions and only slightly different length. This motor is the 1 HP version and the least expensive. But I can upgrade to a 2.3 HP or 3 HP spindle motor very easily.

    You probably know this already, but the 3D printed part did NOT work out as well as you are saying, it is cracked already, which you can see here: th-cam.com/video/1GKhLaHbSNY/w-d-xo.html I guess you have changed it a long time ago, but I hope you discovered the crack before your stepper fell off.
