hey, somebody else with my story!LOL After becoming vegan myself (and alot of research) I moved my dogs onto a vegan diet 4 and half years ago. My original goal was to just reduce their meat consumption...so long as they stayed happy and healthy on their diet. Eventually I reduced down to all vegan and guess what? All dogs did in fact stay happy and healthy! They are now 9, 12, 13 and 13 yrs old and still full of energy and behave like puppies. They get regular yearly vet checks so I know they are thriving...in fact the low protein, anti inflammatory aspects of vegan dog food is quite beneficial to older dogs. No judgement if you feed your dogs meat, I believe it is a choice...as long as your dog is happy and has regular vet care to ensure they are healthy then we are really all doing the best for our pets.
Thank you so much for sharing this story - and you're right, so many similarities!! We're so happy your dogs are thriving! We think it's really important to show all of the possibilities for moving away from the current destructive food system, so thank you again for sharing this!
guys please make sure if you are doing this for your dog get a vet to weigh in on it and make sure you get regular vet checks, as much as a dog can survive on a vegan/vegeterian diet you need to make sure you do it properly to make sure they thrive, dogs are scavenging carnivores not omnivores, they can and will eat plants but their bodies arent as good at digesting plants as they are meat so meat is the safer option if you dog has no allergies and/or if you arent sure how to feed a fully balanced plant based diet that fully meets your dogs needs, also NEVER do this with cats, cats are obligate carnivores and need meat to survive.

Hi Kye - thanks so much for your comment and we totally understand your concern. In the video I (Jules) talk about my reservations and research, which led me to buy a bag of plant-based kibble, deciding I would only move forward with it if my dog liked it. Well, he sure did! He would no longer eat his meat-based kibble! I've been fascinated by learning from the science (and testimonials/personal experience) behind how dogs can thrive on a plant-based diet. In fact, a lot of the ingredients in many meat-based kibble varieties contain common allergens for dogs. I hope this helps shed some light on the path to my plant-based pooch! ❤️
Removing meat from a dog’s diet makes it difficult for them to get enough protein. Dogs require more protein in their diet than humans, and without it, dogs can become very ill. The essential fatty acids in meat proteins are hard to replicate as well. Supplements are one way to provide your dog with those necessary nutrients, but supplements are never as good as the real deal. Fatty acids help your dog’s skin and coat health, and without them, it is likely that your dog will have itchy, flaky skin. Read more at: wagwalking.com/sense/can-dogs-not-eat-meat

I’m looking for help to transition my dog to a vegan diet but the problem is she can smell cat food and that’s stopping her from even trying anything vegan, she’s about 7 months now and we rescued her when she was around a month old.
Hi! Thanks so much for stopping by and your terrific question - and for rescuing what sounds like a very smart and wonderful pup! Have you tried the V-Dog kibble yet? I lucked out in the sense that my dog CHOSE it over his non-vegan kibble, so the transition was a breeze. Usually vets recommend that you mix the old kibble with the new kibble so that your dog's stomach can adjust (this advice applies to any dietary switch). Sometimes I'm in a similar situation with my dog where he wants MY food, and won't eat his kibble, hoping I'll share. I just ignore him (since he's begging for food he can't have anyway, like avocados, etc.) or give a firm but kind, "No," and he takes the hint and eventually eats his kibble! Now he can 'read the room' quickly, LOL, and be like, "Okay, that food is off limits to me. Kibble it is."

Thanks so much for this comment, Alanah! You beautifully articulated what we were trying to show with this video. What we currently feed our dogs via traditional kibble/products is rife with issues, and regardless of what we consider a "natural" diet for humans and our companion animals, we have to consider alternatives for the simple, fact-based reality that our planet cannot sustain factory-farmed meat/dairy as a primary source of our. food. I feel so lucky to share my success story with Uncle Jesse and hope, in some small way, it helps pave a healthier future for us all!
Go hunt some meat! Dogs dont have rabbit teeth for a reason they need meat ! If you cant respect your animals dietary needs dont get a meat eater and force it to be a fucking rabbit ! You don't love your dog. Get a pet cow if you want to feed your dog like one!
Most vegan kibbles are based on peas, sweet potatoes, and legumes. All of which are extremely difficult for carnivores to digest , and dogs particularly have allergic sensitivities to. This isn't just vegan kibbles though (please don't think I'm bashing on you). Most dog kibble contains these ingredients. It's not natural, and it's not good for them. It's much healthier (and cost efficient if done right) to feed your dog actual meat like liver, tripe and beef bone marrow. There's this idea going around that dogs are omnivores. They're not! Yes unlike cats, they're physically capable of digesting SOME plant fibers, but plants and grains aren't part of their natural diet. It's just cheeper to fill their kibble with corn than meat. But the healthiest diet for your dog is a meat based diet. If you're going to supplement make sure it's with whole grains and not legumes or potatoes which can cause severe heart problems as well as allergic reactions.

Hello! I saw your video and had to comment. I'm an intern at a wolf and wildlife sanctuary, and work with animals for rehab in my spare time. Veganism is not healthy for any canine, and while your dog may seem healthy and is alive, he is missing key nutrients. Unfortunately it's a misconception that because canines are omnivorous, they can eat a fully plant-based diet. Being an omnivore simply means you can digest both meat and plant matter- which dogs can in fact do. However, that does not mean they can eat a solely plant OR meat diet. Those in the comments claiming wolves and wild dogs are carnivores are incorrect- in the wild, wolves frequently snack on plants and roots along with the meat they hunt. No dog nor wolf is meant to be carnivorous or vegan. I understand the love for animals- I spend all of my free time doing non-profit work for them. But while it's ethically fine for us to choose our own diets, it's not okay to choose these things for our pets- especially when it's impacting their health negatively. I'm happy your dog is doing well, but this is not a common case and I've frequently seen dogs and cats for health-related issues that unsurprisingly stem from their owners feeding them only vegan food. If you want to discuss, I'm happy to talk more about this topic- My goal isn't to attack, just to help educate.
Hi Monroe! Thank you so much for this comment. It sounds like we share the exact same goals and philosophy when it comes to compassionate discourse; we know this is a really confusing and concerning topic. From our understanding of the research and what we've personally seen, we've only experienced positive, healthy results, though we do of course encourage everyone to do their own research and consult their vet before making changes to their pets' diets. One of our main objectives in sharing this video is to start the discussion around alternative options for our companion animals as the current food system is unsustainable (for both humans and non-humans alike!). It makes us so happy to hear from fellow animal lovers and to know we ultimately share the same goal: keeping our pets happy and healthy for as long as possible!
@@PlantBasedPoint do you realise how nuts you sound? You're literally ignoring what's being said. Putting your ideology ahead of your dog's health is not kind.
Can you please make a video where you put meat in one bowl, vegetables in another bowl and you film your dog eating it live? Just to prove that your dog's not vegan.
When you speak badly about your exes you are only comenting on your own standards. Thank you for the advice! My dog also responds more to vegan treats more than regular ones. Great video!!!
If you want a pet that doesn't eat meat why don't you adopt an animal that is naturally vegetarian like a rabbit instead of neglecting a dog? A dog's digestive system is very different from a human digestive system. Wolves in the wild eat up to 36% plant based food that number is far from 100% and yes dogs are better digesting fiber but it won't change the fact they will be denied essential nutrients if they get a plant based diet. You want to be cruelty free but you're making selfish choices regarding your dogs health.
I'm loving your content! I just became vegan a few months ago after being vegetarian for two years. I've been wondering, since it's improved my health so much, if this is the way to go for my pets. I am making home made food for them and slowly decreasing the amount of meat I put in it. I honestly think this is going to be the diet of the future for ALL living creatures, since I believe that we are moving into a non parisitic reality and we can do anything we put our minds to. Ty so much for confirming my hopes with this video
Thank you so much!! I know cats are in a different category, but my dog is absolutely thriving (and he's 12.5 now!). With lab grown/cultured meat and all of the scientific advances, it does give me hope for a factory farm-free future - for all of us and our companion animals ❤️
Jen Green congratulations becoming vegan ! My cat is doing exceptionally well on Evolution vegan cat food, he actually chose it over the non vegan cat food. Years ago I fed my golden retriever mostly store bought meat, sometimes raw, sometimes cooked with organic grain and vegetables, she was only nine years old when she died, she was covered in cancerous tumors. After she died a did a lot of research into meat and the connection to cancer from the toxins, bad bacteria and dioxins in the meat. There is no doubt in my mind that the meat caused the cancer and killed her. All this was years ago before I became vegan. If meat was good for us it would be healthy for us instead of causing all the health problems and diseases. Again, congratulations on becoming vegan !
The oldest dog in the planet recorded...His name is Bluey, lived to 29, 29 freaking years...an Australian Cattle dog, and guess what, he ate fresh and raw food, all kinds, meat, veggies, bones, fruits etc....11 years old and energetic? And you found that impressive? All my dogs are 13 and still go onto hikes and camping with me..but at the end of the day, I get it, it's your choice, and you made a choice for your pup. Wish you the best luck!
Hi Hebii Tam! Thanks for stopping by and sharing about the incredible Bluey and your own dogs - I'm so happy to hear yours are thriving at 13 years old! Given the unsustainable nature of our current food system, Robin and I think it's important to explore viable options for both humans and our non-human companion animals, though we knew the topic would be controversial. We encourage everyone to do their own research and consult their vet, and are thrilled to share our personal success story with Uncle Jesse and his 4+ year plant-based diet. As ethical vegans, we love all animals, including our pets, and strive to make decisions that do the most good and least harm. Thanks again for stopping by and all our best to you!
In this video she mentioned a dog that lived to 25 on a vegan diet... and I'm sure one could live to 29 too! But for Bluey to live that long was very rare, think of all the dogs on an omnivorous diet compared to the dogs on a vegan diet! It would make sense for more of the dogs who live that long to be on an omnivorous diet as there are more dogs on that diet. And while that diet is very good for them, we have to consider the welfare of farmed animals and the future of the planet. If dogs can thrive on a vegan diet and be happy, as they can be, then why not?
@@alanahjade27 I totally understand everyone has different choice and I respect that. But science is science while you look at their intestine and digestive system are built for digesting meat. While quite a few of my family members are vegan, how long have we been conducting tests and I mean, actual lab tests to support that most dogs can indeed thrive on a vegan based diet. However I will say though. If a dog has tons of allergies and have consulted a certified nutritionist, going vegan would be a way to go as well. If it is for the planet matter, why do we want to keep a pet to begin with if humans have already done and doing so many damage to the earth, and it's true .. At the end of the day, it's really up to each of us. I am sure different dogs have different diet needs. My pup is extremely prone to being gassy if he eats any soy, beans related food...😆
Given the extremely, small percentage of pet dogs that have been or are on plant based diets around the world. One making the list for top longest living dogs is incredibly impressive.
Hi AtomicWolf - thanks so much for you comment! We certainly appreciate the concern people might have in first learning about dogs thriving on plant-based diets. In the video we only scratch the surface on the research; our main intent was to show a case study - my (Jules) own dog! He is positively thriving at 11 years old, after 5+ years on a plant-based diet - in fact, he's often mistaken for a puppy! If that weren't the case, or if he rejected the food, as an ethical vegan, I would certainly do anything in my power to protect and provide for him in a way that allowed him to live the best, fullest life possible. Thanks again for your comment and have a wonderful day!
@@RealCarlWheezer Thank you again for your comment!
Putting your ideology ahead of your dog's health is not kind.
animal abuse
Vegan cats ?
Bad idea
Cats are obligatory carnivores. They unfortunately can’t thrive or survive on a plant-based diet.
Can you please make a video where you put meat in one bowl, vegetables in another bowl and you film your dog eating it live? Just to prove that your dog's not vegan.
If he doesn't eat any animal products, he is obviously vegan.
Again,congratulations on becoming vegan !
how to malnourish your dog 101
It's no coincidence that dogs on a vegan diet live 5 years longer, on average.
You believe in animal rights but you don't let your dog have the right to eat his natural diet of mainly meat
@@PlantBasedPoint put it's not natural
@@RealCarlWheezer Thank you again for your comment! Unfortunately, the way 99% of all meat is mass-produced via factory farms in the U.S. (for both human and canine consumption) isn't natural either and has been proven to be absolutely catastrophic to the health of our planet and all of its inhabitants! Time to change the way we do things!
@@PlantBasedPoint some animals eat other animals it's nature it's not cruel
And it's not natural to keep a dog in your house that can be also viewed as cruel
the dog doesn't look happy to be vegan
what if his pals make fun of him or somethin
This is animal abuse
Animal abuse!
My great white shark is also vegan , wanna meet him ? 🤣🤣🤣
This lady lives in my area, that dog eats meat.
Lots of doodle look-a-likes out there - sometimes I even do a double-take! (Uncle Jesse also doesn't typically eat in public, LOL Like most dogs, he's fed at home.) Have a great day!
