No, it's because people have done their research and realize that dogs can live on a vegan diet. I have a supportive community of people who aren't biased and look into what's best for the animals
Whats best for animals is for them to live as close to how they would in NATURE. Al either with more comforts. You wouldn't feed your fish fruity pebbles just because is starbing so much it eats them. You wouldn't feed your dog chocolate because the dog thinks its delicious? Granted canines are more omnivorous than people realize, but they're only supplemental omnivores. If they need more options or certain nutrients they have the ability to get them from plant matter. Cats for instance, are hyper carnivores and have no such ability. You feed a cat a vegetarian diet and it is going to die a slow, painful death.
You should do more research. Dogs aren't human. Edit : dogs can follow a certain diet that wouldn't include meat it's actually healthy for them but I would not recommend it due to unknown long term side effects and mainly because this must be handled by professionals. Make a mistake and you might kill your dog. That's why I wouldn't recommend this "diet"
@@Tarahhh Well clearly you need to do more. Dogs metabolism are different from us. But well do what you want in the end your dogs won't die of a natural death. Dogs will like this eat because of their survival instinct not necessarily because they like this
@@Dimmary Fair enough, but Pepsi is living proof that dogs can thrive on a vegan diet. He's doing great and has a ton of energy for an 11 year old dog. He's in great health as we're told by the vets we go to.

I absolutely can have children and I'm choosing not to. And I didn't buy Pepsi. Buying dogs from breeders or pet stores perpetuates the abuse that is often behind puppy mills. I adopted him from a family that could no longer care for him

@@Tarahhh oh, could you please give him a slice of fresh deli meat just once every 3 or however many months? just as a treat, just like giving a child a cake once in a while
So happy this person chose not to reproduce. Just feel bad for the dog. I can tell she loves the dog, and she has the best of intentions, but to fit your human lifestyle on a dog seems a bit cruel. Dogs are 100% omnivores and even though she say's he is healthy, she never said that she has her dog monitored by a veterinarian. Hopefully she is getting him checked on the regular, because it is hard enough to get this diet right for humans much less dogs.

@@Tarahhh that is great to hear. I don't for a second think you don't love your dog and it seems you are doing everything necessary to ensure he is healthy. I do have one sincere question. If the vet did say you needed to introduce some meat in your dogs diet would you?

Sorry about all the horrible comments you have received in response to this video. It just baffles me that the 'experts' in this comments section are so insistent that your dog is malnourished despite the fact that your vet has definitively stated otherwise. It's also a pertinent reflection of cognitive dissonance that they are so concerned about your dog being 'mistreated' but not the millions of sentient animals that are unnecessarily killed for both human and pet consumption.
It's honestly okay and I expect it. The people thinking they're experts is a prime example of the dunning kruger effect, where these people have had a dog before and therefore think they know everything about caring for dogs, and dog nutrition. They have very little knowledge, and this gives them the confidence that they're educated on the subject, and that leads to uneducated comments like "he can't get all of the necessary amino acids from plants, he needs complete protein" (a theory from the 80's that's been long since disproven) or that dogs can't live without meat, which they can. It's a dangerous mindset and the people commenting likely don't even realize how little they actually know on the subject. Then there's what you mentioned with the lack of compassion towards other animals, but this seemingly intense concern for one dog who's perfectly healthy.
@@optimuscrime1023 Have you watched the video or read any of her comments pertaining to her vet stating otherwise??? It's like talking to a brick wall with you people!

As long as the dog is happy and healthy, i don't see a problem here. If there were any serious problems arising from their dogs condition, Im sure they would either adjust the dogs diet, or give up the dog. Be well everyone.
Of course. And if the vet said he was having health issues, we would address it immediately. We're completely committed to Pepsi's health and well being
Why would you put a protein source and a vegetable side by side? If it's to be a fair comparison, I'd put a vegan protein source beside the steak, one that's also been seasoned and grilled. No one actually likes the steak, they like the cooking process and plant seasonings, otherwise people would eat the steak raw.
@@Tarahhh ok put your vegan protein source next to steak raw or cooked Pepsi will still pick the steak . Poor pepsi idk why you have to push your unhealthy human diet on your dog

On a farm a dog will hunt to supplement its diet and for interest. They like chasing rodents & do not mind scavenging rotting carcasses. Its pretty gross when your dog presents you with the femur of a dead animal. I do not believe any dog would voluntarily give up on their hunting instincts.
Generally speaking farms had cats for that reason, but regardless, this is entirely dependent on the breed of dog you have. Our dog Pepsi purposely avoids even farm animals. Any time we walk by them he will run to the other side of the road. The purpose of his breed is to protect, and Pepsi has never once tried to hunt anything or go anywhere near an animal carcass

I’m vegetarian, but… I still don’t agree with you. Like, imagine you, a vegan, being forced to eat meat for the rest of your life. You would not like it, right? So.. I chose to let my dogs choose what they eat. I will mix veggies (like cooked veggies) and fresh meat in their bowl, with some regular dog food, and let them eat. If they don’t like something, they won’t eat it, because they have a preference. If they don’t like something in their bowl, I never add it again. I say “will” because I plan on doing that when I move to my own house. I want to adopt a grown up street dog instead of buying puppies from breeders. I.. just think that the old ones should have a second chance too, since they have the lowest numbers of adoption. Anyways, I still support that you care about your dog, and that he/she has a owner with a good heart.

Do you have a tutorial on how to start a vegan diet for your dog? I’ve had my dog for 12 years he’s getting old sleeps a lot. I want him to be more active
First thing, when changing any dog's diet, it has to be done slowly over a month or so. Never change their diet overnight, as this can harm their digestive system. Slowly introduce some vegan kibble into their existing kibble, and then slowly add in some lentils, grains and vegetables in small amounts. Over a month or two, wean your pup off the meat based kibble, until he/she is eating a combination of the vegan kibble and fresh foods. If you decide to make all fresh food, it should be in a ratio of 50% protein (lentils, beans, soy), 25% grains (quinoa, rice, amaranth, millet, wheat), and 25% vegetables (broccoli, kale, spinach, pumpkin, sweet potato, carrots), and then add in some other items like healthy fats (coconut milk, nut butters, chia seeds, flax seeds) and things like nutritional yeast, and herbs for flavour.
The amount of narcissism ozing from the video and the comments is crazy... Feel free to eat your eucalyptus leaves but let your dog be a dog jesus christ
Before watching the video I have one question, But why? Yes dogs can go vegan but dogs are specifically built for eating meat. If you check their teeth, you would see sharp teeth for ripping meat. And why is it only domesticated animals? If dogs, why not bears? Or whales that eat krill? Or what about sharks or vultures that eat dead carcasses?
Domesticated animals aren't part of nature, just like we humans aren't. This dog, even if fed a non vegan diet, would not hunt for a living. A bear in the wild needs to hunt for food. So when you feed non vegan meals to your dogs, you are supporting animal agriculture, which breeds, torture and kills billions of animals in non natural ways every year. I've been vegan for almost two years and I have two dogs, and I really wish I could feed them vegan.

This is very interesting! I am learning more about vegan feeding for my dog, especially due to the high cost of meat, and because I don't like commercial meats. What I need to find out is how do you calculate the amount of protein the dog gets from lentils and beans? Also, I always thought that organs were necessary for dogs to eat, so I would need to learn how to make sure he's getting a complete diet that won't harm him long term, including calcium not from bones. Can you recommend a place where I can find the correct calculations and feeding amounts for a 20 pound dog (low active) on a vegan diet? Thanks
How often does your dog shite and what does it smell like would be my questions, your dog looks fit and healthy so well done for not feeding him a 'regular' processed diet, I feed my dog raw liver, kidney etc but will definitely be trying your recipes, food for thought as they say!
Hey, not her, but mine poops either once or twice a day. The consistency is firm but not constipated (still a bit squishy) and 1 or 2 "logs". Like all poop, it smells bad, but it's not foul. About as bad as human poop, I guess. She regularly goes to the vet (twice a year) and she's super healthy and energetic, especially since she's almost turning 9. She's also way happier eating fresh food like us than kibble. I give her more or less the same food the video author does. If anyone wants to transition their dog to a vegan diet, make sure to research and have a transition period of about 1-2 months. Also introduce new foods slowly (like you would with a baby) and pay attention to your dog's mood and bowel movements to check if your dog is allergic to anything. Before you feed anything new to your dog, look it up to see if it's harmful for your dog.

If you lay out meat based food for the dog and vegan base food for the dog the dog who choose meat-based dog food. Forcing your dog to be a vegan or vegetarian like you is animal abuse.
You must be joking, if you aren’t then thats doesn’t even seem like a joke, its more like you are forcing the diet for YOUR sake of not wanting to feed him raw meat
if you put a nice juicy steak and one of your lame vegan meals side by side you know damn well which one the dog is going to go for. just wanted to make u read this again lol.
If you want a vegan pet buy a rabbit or something like that. They are not even omnivores, just search it on google and the first result is that they are carnivores. They can some vegetables but their diet is like 90% meat. It's not your decision, it's the dog's decision. And if it's healthy by now it's pure luck or other good habits appart from the food.
Doing a simple Google search doesn't change a dog's physiology or the thousands of years of domestication and adapting their digestion to eat carbohydrates. Dogs can thrive on a vegan diet and Pepsi is the perfect example
@@Tarahhh I'm not talking to you anymore. I know you aren't changing your opinion so, if you want to make your dogs lifespan shorter is not my problem. But I hope you read all the hundreds of comments and maybe reconsider it. It's not proven that dogs can eat a vegan diet, but yours is not an experiment to see if he survives or not. I don't want to waste your time nor mine so that's it.
My miniature dachshund, our family adopted 2 years ago eats daily fresh prepared food, just like Pepsi. Our little Katie loves fruits and vegetables, rice, beans..., her coat is now also incredibly silky. Her diet also helped her to eliminate some health issues she had before. Katie's diet is mostly vegan... Loving greetings to you all.., from a vegan family in Seattle...❤️❤️❤️🌺🌸
Thanks for the video! I’m a vegan myself and I adopted a cavoodle a couple of months ago and in the process of transitioning him to a vegan diet. Your video was helpful ❤
I'm vegan too, but sorry, it is not "compassionate" when you force your human ethical CHOICE on a biological carnivore! We are different species with very different physiology!!! Approximating good nutrition is speculation at best, but that aside, how would you like to be *forced* to consume only meat??? Adopt a rabbit or guinea pig if you need to enforce your vegan ethics onto another dependent living being. Or since most pet food is made from the dregs of human animal consumption, try forcing a human to be vegan instead!
@@CharGC123 so first off, dogs are not obligate carnivores. Cats are, and I don't recommend making a cat vegan. Dogs can eSily thrive on a vegan diet, evidenced by the fact that Pepsi has been eating this way for 11 years and our vet is very impressed with his health. Also, rabbits or Guinea pigs are herbivores, which is very different than the type of diet I feed Pepsi, so it's worth actually looking into this before making false statements
@@Tarahhh I realize dogs are not obligate carnivores like cats, I'm owned by both, I said they are biological carnivores... order Carnivora. Domestication and living off our scraps may have made them more adaptable to starches and a more varied diet than wolves, and I have no objection to feeding them other foods they may like, but they evolved to keep nature in balance and need, eat, and enjoy meat. I get a huge kick that even one of my "obligate carnivores" loves to root through the 'guts' from pumpkins, winter squash, and cantaloupes, will gnaw on a leaf of purple cabbage, likes peanut butter, crackers, and tomato sauce, but you can bet if I let him outside he'd be hunting down something very different. It doesn't make me happy for sure, but it's his nature, NOT my ethical choice... just because we share living space. How would you feel if you were invited to dinner at a friends house and were served nothing but meat because that's what they like? Herbivorous bunnies can be coerced to eat meat like most humans, but then they also eventually suffer from the same diseases humans do from eating an inappropriate diet. I'm glad your dog seems to be doing well, but I'll reiterate... it is not "compassionate" when you force your human ethical CHOICE on a biological carnivore.
She starts by saying how the dog "would go off tracking wild animals" of course he did! That is his natural instinct to find the food he should naturally be eating. It is cruel that you are taking that natural instinct and desire to want and need to eat meat. It is like keeping an Eagle in cage.
Did you neglect to hear that he was off tracking before I adopted him? He ate meat then and he still never killed any wild animals. Since I transitioned him to a vegan diet, he just hangs out with the birds and squirrels in our yard and doesn't try to harm them at all. Perhaps you should actually listen to what I say instead of trying to change the words to fit your narrative
@@Tarahhh it is not changing anything. It literally quoting what you said. It doesn't matter if it was before you adopted him. That's what dogs are meant to do. Narrative!?? What that dogs are omnivores?? I don't know many dogs that chase birds. I think you might be confused with cats. Did you see the video of "vegan dog" on chat show in UK. Where they let the "vegan dog" choose what bowl of food? Yes straight to the meat bowl. It is cruel. Imagine if you were forced to only eat meat!
@@Tarahhh It is about taking away the natural desire and choice of your dog. It is forcing your choices on a natural born omnivore. I dare you too make a honest video of your dog choosing between a bowl of meat based dog food and a bowl the vegan stuff you force your dog to eat....but you won't, because you know in your heart. That he will obviously go for the meat. I bet you are one of those people who say they love wildlife programmes. But hate it when the bear, Croc, lion, wolves etc catch and eat their prey and eat them.. Mostly alive! That is nature in its purest form.
@@jimbokiwi9322 every single person who has a dog forces a specific diet on them. Kibble is no more natural than a vegan diet. I don't care about what's natural, I care about the healthiest diet that will give him the longest, high quality life he can have. Funny enough, all the other older dogs I know who were fed meat or kibble now have arthritis, cancer, graying fur, aches and pains, and Pepsi has none of that
@@Tarahhh your reference in you video about some vegan dog living a very long life. Eagles in the wild can live between 20-25 years old. But in captivity they can live to 50 years old. But I beat if the Eagle had the choice he'd rather live for 25 years being free and making its own choices. Than being made do what the human wants.
I do not have a vegan dog, but she does really enjoy produce. A lot. Like no dog I've ever seen. I would love to see another video on evidence based info (I can look it up myself, but I think it would be beneficial to many). I have encountered 2 extremely unhealthy vegan dogs in the past, so I dismissed the idea. A mistake based on a poor sample size I think. Will look into it for sure. Pepsi is a doll! ❤
Really? That's great! I think it's possible to feed a dog an unhealthy vegan diet just like it's possible to feed a dog an unhealthy omnivorous diet. We put a ton of care into Pepsi's diet with a wide range of beans, legumes, grains, veggies, nuts and seeds as well as a general supplement and extra taurine. He also gets green smoothies and healthy snacks. I'm not sure that there's been a ton of peer reviewed studies on vegan dogs simply because it's a lifestyle that's fairly new, but I'll do my best to come up with concrete science as opposed to anecdotal evidence.
@@Tarahhh If you still plan on making a video, there is a study from 2019 that explains amino acid combination, one from 2016 looking into protein utilation from meat vs soy in dogs and one on sled racing huskies looking at performance on meat free diets.
Poor doggo. Yes its true dogs can SURVIVE on plant based diet. But they certainly can't LIVE. Hope that dog doesn't face an iron deficiency and tooth loss at an early stage.
@@Tarahhh i don't wanna argue or debate. As I said earlier yes dogs can survive in a plant based diet but they are designed to be carnivores. It means that your dog, though is vegan but would choose meat over plant.
@@Love-um8xk designed? By who? Or do you mean they have evolved to eat meat? In that case, wolves themselves evolved from amoeba, so the evolution argument is quite weak. Simply because something evolved from something else does not mean that are the same biliogically. If, on the other hand, you mean designed by a creator to eat meat, then you have lost my attention because I'm an atheist
@@Tarahhh belief don't have anything to do in it. I am an atheist itself. Look I can't change your opinion cause ur belief is too strong on this topic. All i am trying to say is its not about evolution its about dogs being omnivores which means they require both vegan and meat equally that's why dog food contains meat. The same way human survive on LIQUID. LIQUID is of all type be it fruit juice, soda ,pops etc. We need LIQUID to live these are liquid too, but however we need WATER. same way there are many types of food but dogs need meat even if u don't want them to, dogs are gonna choose meat over veggies no matter how healthy it is.
@@Love-um8xk you'll notice I didn't once mention belief. My opinions and decisions are not based on belief. The numerous vets I've brought Pepsi to have stated that he's in perfect health. His tests have come back great. He's thriving in every way. Also, the liquids analogy you used is poorly thought out, as humans absolutely could thrive on a liquid diet. As long as you're getting all of the nutrition you need through juices and smoothies you would do just fine. It would probably be boring, but nutritionally adequate. You could even go without drinking water because the hydration found in fruits and vegetables would be more than enough. Theoretically, you could just have nutrition injected into you, and you wouldn't need food or water . I'm sorry, but it's just a bad analogy. Besides all that, veggies only make up 25% of Pepsi's diet, so it's not a fair comparison. Could you explain what nutrients can only be found in meat and not in plants?
Nicely shot video. I have to say Its pretty bold to decide your dog needs to be vegan. I’m sure there are ways it can be done but this is something that so wouldn’t recommend owners do. Dogs can become severely malnourished/vitamin drficient if things are not done properly. I wish you and Pepsi the best. Dogs are a gift.
While I appreciate your comment being polite and I know you mean well, I still disagree. While "getting it right" might have been more difficult 20 years ago, we now have a range of high quality vegan dog foods that contain all essential nutrients. The domestication process already prepared dogs for a life with very little meat. After all, up until industrial agriculture meat was a rare and expensive food and dogs weren't valued and spoiled nearly as much as todays pets. It is only with the recent abundance of meat and dogs being right up there with children, that some people start feeding their pets grass-fed steak instead of potatoes and slaughter scraps. Therefor study after study shows, that dogs are well adapted to digesting starches and other plant nutrients, if they are cooked and preferebly broken down to overcome a dogs teeth and short digestive tract. That still leaves a demand for certain amino acids and nutrients primarily found in meat, that can easily be synthesized and supplemented today.
Thank you! He's been doing great on a vegan diet for 8 years, and all of the vets I've taken him to agree that he's in perfect health. I put a lot of effort into his food and make sure he's getting everything he needs. We love him and his health and well being really matters to us.

And why is it only domesticated animals? If dogs, why not bears? Or whales that eat krill? Or what about sharks or vultures that eat dead carcasses?
@no gods, no masters, duh... k
This makes me want to give my dog a nice big steak and a hug

Dogs can eSily thrive on a vegan diet, evidenced by the fact that Pepsi has been eating this way for 11 years and our vet is very impressed with his health. Also, rabbits or Guinea pigs are herbivores, which is very different than the type of diet I feed Pepsi, so it's worth actually looking into this before making false statements
@@CharGC123 dogs can be vegan. Cats too if they take to it. Don’t kill many animals to feed 1 animal
You do realize that dogs need to eat meat to survive
Funny enough, Pepsi has been vegan for 10 years now and he's doing great, so you're incorrect
Okay great, show me peer reviewed studies clearly stating that a vegan diet cannot allow dogs to get all of the nutrition they need.
F' these nutcases!
@@samothco What about what the dog WANTS? Dogs are omnivorous. They naturally eat both meat and vegetable matter.
@@Tarahhh But you're dnying him wat he WANTS!
Are you nuts? You should be put in jail for animal abuse. Poor animal.
🙄🙄
Hey hun. Do you recommend slowing taking a dog of animal products ?
Definitely! You don't ever want to change a dog's diet quickly. Always go slow, introducing new foods one or two at a time and getting them used to them, and then going from there
@@Tarahhh thank you kindly for your reply. I have ordered her some vegan dog kibble so I will maybe mix that in with her usual food. She is already on vegan snacks which she is enjoying. i just wanted her to stop animal products but I appreciate your advice. I'll buy one last bag of animal product food.
