Breakthrough on Starlink could open up Musk’s financial muscle in SA - Theo Venter

- South Africa was abuzz yesterday following reports of a meeting between South African-born billionaire Elon Musk and President Cyril Ramaphosa in New York. Footage released by the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) captured the two engaged in discussions in Ramaphosa’s hotel room during his attendance at the United Nations General Assembly. According to the Presidency, the talks centred around investment opportunities in South Africa. Prof. Theo Venter, a political analyst from the University of Johannesburg, told Biznews that the dynamics of Ramaphosa’s visit to New York shifted after the Musk encounter. Instead of focusing primarily on the international court case involving Israel and Palestine and the transformation of the Security Council, the meeting with Musk took centre stage. Venter emphasised that if a breakthrough on Starlink for South Africa is achieved, it could open up “Musk’s financial muscle to be more prevalent in South Africa in the future.” Additionally, Venter pointed out that this engagement with Musk could be strategically beneficial for Ramaphosa, given Musk’s backing of Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential elections.

The issue was that Starlink is a one-stop service, so they probably do not want to have to sign up with one ISP. BUT why can't any registered SA company resell Starlink ? They manage their service end-to-end which is most efficient. So why should they allow a 30% overhead, or be dictated to by a government unable to build or maintain anything efficiently itself ?
ICASA is just a bad joke.
It is time to repeal BBBEE which has been a dismal failure for the intended majority who suffer even more now without jobs. The government does not create a single job - that is the job of enterprise ( the freer the market, the better )
Hiring on merit, simplifying international deals, etc will pay huge dividends.
Cut red tape - for every new regulation, cut 3 to open things up.
Go Elon ! Millions can benefit here and Rama should grasp the opportunity with urgency.
Starlink is live in >100 countries including >10 in Africa already, including many of our neighbors, and >20 will be active over the next few months.
BEE stopping the digital divide being closed. Nuts.
I hope Elon brings up the energy crisis that suddenly disappeared
No its correct what the goverment is doing 30% of profit must go to the people who are the custodians of thag soil like the Chiefs then they must distribute to the citizens of that area.
Our grand parents were moved in reach lands and settled in dry lands where some they can't do farming.
@@LinemediaStudioprinting Please help me to understand your position better. Do you agree with these statements:
1 Starlink has a service that gives users internet access. It overcomes the digital divide everywhere, including South Africa.
2 The service is helping rural people in many countries, more than 10 countries in Africa already have access to the service.
3 No other rival public or private sector solution in SA is able to help those off the grid as quickly and cheaply as Starlink, which could come on stream if regulations allowed.
4 Starlink does not need to set up a local subsidiary.
Why do you think the SA government should not allow Starlink to offer their service in SA (they could do so without setting up an office in South Africa)?
Given Musk's personality I don't see him bending the knee to any of Cyril's BEE demands. With Elon it's either my way or the highway, and he's rich enough to not care if he can't do business in South Africa.
The same applies with South Africa. Elon Musk is not the only Electric Car producer. SA has China in there pockets, the jack of all trades.
He has to forge a partnership somehow. His other partner, Trump, would want that. Given the US' grave future with the dollar losing its power and BRICS continually growing stronger, you'd want to get into bed with one of the prime members.
South Africa is a different country, that all I can say😊
Oh wow, 'the system' is deleting comments as per usual.
I hope you're right
Musk not stupid.
Doing business with Anc is a pack with the devil; doing business with SA will grow SA 😢
Using Musk's name in the same sentence as Gupta is insulting enough, He doesn't need us, we need him, Professor.
Yaa, that was weird.
Then goes on about Trump and Biden's DEI hire...what does the US election winner have to do with Starlink and Tesla in SA?

There seems to be conflicting messaging about allowing Starlink in South Africa 🇿🇦
Yes. We would not have needed it if we actually built infrastructure to the rural areas. If we get it, it's outsourcing yet another thing that we should be doing ourselves
BIG BUSINESS is watching Elon Musk ... and will follow his lead.

Elon musk has not denounce his south African citizenship.his still a 100% south African.just wandering why Prof say he is ex South African
Has anyone ever thought that had the apartheid gov not been what they were musk would have probably still been in SA having done all that he has done in the USA here. This just goes to show that in the long run what is wrong ends up hurting everyone.
To think Elon might be unemployed in SA.
Perhaps so, but adding another evil in the form of reverse-racism has excluded millions of people like Musk from participating in our economy. It's time to let anyone get involved if they have required skills - then everything will start working again. How long will this truth take to be understood ?

Ramaphosa amassed his billions through black empowerment deals and business interests in numerous top companies.
Before leaving business for politics in 2014, he served for over a decade as MTN chairman and nine years as Bidvest chairman. He was also a non-executive director at Alexander Forbes, Macsteel, SABMiller, and Standard Bank.
His biggest wealth creator was the managed investment company Shanduka Group. The company quickly established itself as a groundbreaking black economic empowerment firm.
B.E.E.=BLACK APARTHEID 😑🇿🇦
He is not ex South African, he is still very much a South African citizen.
According to legislation if you immigrate and don't apply to retain your citizenship, you lose it. You also have to consider tax implications. Can you imagine him paying SA tax on his earnings
@@rickykruger7391 he holds three citizenships South African (by birth) Canadian (through his Mom) and he became a naturalised US citizen in 2002. Elon Musk doesn't need South Africa. The professor forgot to mention affirmative action. Elon made his views very clear on AA/DEI. If he makes a deal it will be to secure iridium supply.
Easy. No 30 %.
I hope musk tells them to F O unless the apartheid, racist BEE statutes are totally abolished.

Surely, there must be something in it for Cyril to even speak to EM.
So Elon Musk is not allowed to talk to people anymore?? Negativity 😂😂
@Meva39070 On the contrary, Cyril has a lot to explain about his party's ludicrous BEE policy that prevents Starlink from operating in SA.

"IT'S A WIN-WIN-WIN FOR PRESIDENT CYRIL, ENG. ELON MUSK & BUSINESS!" ❤🇬🇧❤
This is very simple guys. Don’t look at just Starlink but Tesla Solar. Elon should strike a deal with GNU to supply RDP houses with Tesla Solo panel roofs. In that way Gov buys from Tesla and The BEE is also involved with the RDP contracts which solves the 30% issue.
hAHAHAHAH , tHAT TESLA SOLAR PANEL IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE rdp HOUSE ITSELF
@@Sifisomabanga ur getting it from Tesla or shall I say Elon do u think it would be same price as retail? When u have a bulk order for a whole country? When ur in conversation with Elon it’s seldom about money is about influence.
The more government is left out, the better everything will work. They must just ensure that basic services run, and leave business to those who can do.
Rama on the begging streak again how much to loot again
Iiar 😂😂 in this GNU ?
One thing that is not mentioned, is it affordable? As far as I know, it is very expensive
Elon Musk could actually not care 1% of what is happening in SA. For him it is only about business success and adding more dollars to his wealth. The only reason why we do not have star link is due to the fact that he has to give away 30% of the local ownership and being a man who build his business from nothing is a very hard pill to swallow. Also knowing what has happened with majority of companies where this has happened as most have already closed their doors and some are considering leaving. Starlink on the other hand will open excellent internet connectivity neither which MTN nor Vodacom or any SA Player would ever be able to provide in rural areas where millions of people still live not even mentioning the benefits schools, medical facilities and other rural based services will get with proper internet. Tesla can stay away as only a very few rich people can afford those cars and SA still light years away from being able to service an electric vehicle market on an economical scale.
Get rid of BEE and Tenderpreneurs!!! Make SA more investor friendly!
Signing deals with the devil is what Rama do best.
