As an older guy, I love my nearly stock FXR. Not only is it a terrific bike as it came, but I keep it around because when I hit the start button, the old 80” Evo running through the old Screamin Eagle slip ons, warms my heart. Takes me back to better days. I am glad younger fellas are getting into the old bikes.

I have a 94 fxr . Once you change the cam, upgrade topend, put dingle fire ignition, and a youst tube in the stock cv carb, the 80 cubic inch Evo is not slow. I believe that it's called waking up your Evo. They hold up well. Ran my first one over 200,000. Just change fluids. Also improved clutch. No problem with stock dual disk breake set up. My little 80ci. Runs fast and handles super well. I run good tires and I lay it over when I corner. I did have to upgrade the charging system as well. It's inky got like 15,thousand on it. Had just over ten when I bought it. Then I got hit by teenager in a Buick. So when I could walk again, wich was a year or so. I rebuild it. Then I got hit by teenager on cell phone. Pushed me a full city block before he realized he had ran in to me. Then I got sick. So I have not had chance to put miles on the bike. It's been totaled 4 times. Getting ready to put it in a custom frame. Took 9 years to collect all of the parts. Heath problems slowed me down. Anyway I digress. I love my bike. It's my 2nd harly and my second fxr.i love it. Most dependable bike I have ever had.

First of all, I love the series of videos you did on this build! I'm on my second FXR since 86 when I bought an FXRS from HD Military Sales while in PI. I now have a '94 FXLR that I bought for my wife. This is an older video but maybe someone can clear up what I've been told in the past about using impact tools on the compensator nut. I was told many moons ago that using the impact will possibly damage the flywheel as it can loosen up the pins. Maybe I'm confusing that with the shovel compensator as I also have a '69 FLH that I've owned since '93.
The stator fried on the '94 so I'm in the process of replacing the charging system with a Spyke unit. Great insight on all of the seals and bushings in your videos so thank you for that. My bearing race did actually walk up into the 5th gear seal so I had to get that off without use of the puller. On that subject, I've also been told by some of my friends that they have not changed the two-piece bearing on their evos due to the oiling properties of the open 2-piece. For this reason I have replaced the stock bearing setup, but I'm not married to the idea it's a better setup as far as oiling is concerned.

I have a '92 FXLR... the OG FXLR. Bike has been in my family since 1993. Rode this bike when I was 16. Kind of a family heirloom at this point. She still rips with her modded Evo.

Great video! Looking forward to this build. Please do that video on the M-Unit. Not many FXR wiring videos out there.

Quick comment - Andrews EV46 cam, cut the heads down for 9.5:1 CR, and set quench to 0.030" and you'll have a dead reliable FXR for cheap that will eat an 88" twin cam for lunch. It's honestly how the bike SHOULD have come from the factory, imho.

Restoring my 1991 FXRS. Going to probably keep it close to stock as possible as it made it this far.

Thanks for these videos. I'm going to buy a 94 fxlr on Friday. Not sure of the letter designation, but it does not have the tank console. I hope I can buy it right.

Looking to do something similar to my 92 FXRS. Hard to chose this bike over other bikes in my garage in its current state (suspension and brakes are the weakest point)

I did the one piece bearing for the primary on a past bike and it was nice. Just piece of mind knowing there isn't a race to move around on me.

I have an 89 Fxrs-c 95% stock. Replaced the base gaskets and original warped rocker box covers. Rode it lightly but within 2 months it has blown the gaskets out between the rocker box sections. Mechanic says the breather is working. Any suggestions?

Primary oil is topped up via the plate where the gear sift shift comes through on an evo 1340 not the clutch cover 😉

The covertable is an FXRS-SP lowrider sport with a windshield and semi-solid removable saddle bags. They have 2'' longer suspension and twin disc front end, much better lean angle than a fxr/fxrs even more than most sportsters of the era.

You can get into the weeds a bit on the performance benefits of it (better torque response, etc.) but the main reason we're doing it is that it will allow us to run a 150 rear tires rather than the stock 130.

Just to think I was about to subscribe to this FOOLS channel and he bashes the FXR over twin cams and fuel injection! GTFOH with that nonsense! And if the FXR is slow like you say then go work on rockets.

    • @thomasfiedler5176

I agree I wouldn't subscribe either. 1 he doesn't know the details on the bikes he working on comparing a fxr to a dyna lol. No comparing them to the fxr way better handling an a better riding much smother. An 2 he is a shit mechanic. Watching him work hurts my eyes an my knowledge of Harleys an their mechanical concepts. U never use a impact on a harley compensator or clutch hubs cuz the vibration kills stator by knocking the magnets loose. Hell the service manual even tells u not to use a impact. Total jackass

Evo fxrs shit on dynas when it comes to handling dude. If you want speed a dyna is still slow as fuck. You want to go fast buy a sport bike. The fxr is amazing platform and the best bike HD ever madd
