    The default aero caps on the Gemini Wheels look pretty unattractive to me, so I was super pumped to check out new wheel covers. In this video I unbox, review, and efficiency test the TPARTS 19'' INDUCTION STYLE WHEEL COVER FOR MODEL Y.

    Getting repeat questions about the covers being "backwards". These wheel caps are universal (right and left side are the same) so one side will inherently be more aerodynamic than the other. I reached out the TParts for comment about this choice. Here is their response -
    "We’ve been receiving the same customer feedbacks, while you may look at the OEM induction wheel or the Überturbine wheel, they all have the same wheel (right side will be against the wind). And to have a bidirection wheel cover, the mold cost will be double.
    Thus, we don’t have plan to make the wheel cover bidirection for now. And you may explain that Tesla OEM made the wheel same way to your reviewers."

    Excellent video! I think to get more accurate numbers you need a much longer drive. Also, it's possible that since they were done at different times of the day, the AC/battery cooling might have affected the result (also, tires might have more flex when warmer which uses more energy).
    Would be great to have a similar video starting at same time of the day, hopefully fairly similar temperature, always coming out of the garage at same temps, state of charge, etc.
    Again - thank you for the video!

    The reason the covers are not efficient is based in the way of the fan blade design. If you look as a normal house fan, look at it when it running, the rotational force is slicing the wind vs the opposition. If the covers were facing the inner parts o the inside. They would be comparable to the Tesla rim cover. You can clearly see the fan blade is going in the opposite direction. The blade side should be cutting the blade in’s while driving not the opposite. I’ll be ordering a 2023 MY with the wheel covers left on. I have a 22 MYP and get the same watt hour range also . 35 miles of highway and city mix on 21 inch rims chill mode average in the morning rush hour is about 276 at 10 kilowatt speed average is 65 to 76 mph and evening drive back is about 220 kw keeping speed under 65. Speed and how heavy your foot is the factor. The 21 inch wheels are heavy, but the design is perfect for the Tesla MYP look. Once the car is rolling , the wheels do not feel as heavy. Also note, preconditioned car will give you a better range and less power consumption since the battery is already warm. Great video coverage. Thank you for testing all 3 versions.

    Hi Dylan, enjoyed your video. After watching for a second time i believe i might have found a flaw in your test on efficiency. You stated that you change the image of your car from the 19 inch aero wheels to the 20 inch induction wheels. If the cars' computer used this for determining range and efficiency, you would have fooled the computer into thinking you were riding on 20 inch wheels. Might I suggest returning the image to the aero wheel and see if your figures remain the same.

    • @DylanHongTech
      @DylanHongTech  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I kept the wheel configuration constant for all of the tests and the caps don’t change the wheel diameter. So even if it does change the efficiency rating, the relative efficiencies remain similar

    • @aqf0786

      @michaelcrz1430 I appreciate you watching, I just really want to make sure I am sharing accurate information. If the blade is not symmetrical, there will always be one side of the vehicle that is less efficient than the other. I have tried what you are mentioning and it does not work with my set. I will paste the response from the manufacturer of this set as well below.
      -

    The wheels are a good option, but I wish they forged bronze color also and price would have been close to $200 for the whole set of caps. You can get your whole wheels painted nowadays for less than $300 so the value is not there in my opinion.

    • @ilovepinktacos
      @ilovepinktacos ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do that yourself for that real custom look with a few cans of Krylon matte finish spray paint and matte clear coat after the paint cures. Only way manufacturers to do it correctly is the bronze dye into the plastic cover.

    Someone needs to do a fully-flat rim. Similar to the old ‘moon discs’ but with a modern/stylish design.
    Rims with air-vents are for cooling brakes - not necessary on long-range EVs that brake regeneratively.

    Are the black ones backwards in the beginning of your video? Ie, the sharp face should be forward?

    • @DylanHongTech
      @DylanHongTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wondered about that too. All of the covers are identical and the only way you can attach them is with the nozzle cutout lined up correctly. The direction the face looks different on the right side of the car vs the left side

    • @dmnz5992
      @dmnz5992 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s weird , we purchased similar ones that look identical, and they are marked left and right, so, like the original tesla induction rims, the blades sharp face is forward. I would imagine this would affect the economy?

      Here’s the response from TPARTS
      Hi Dylan,
      Thank you for your info.
      We’ve been receiving the same customer feedbacks, while you may look at the OEM induction wheel or the Überturbine wheel, they all have the same wheel (right side will be against the wind). And to have a bidirection wheel cover, the mold cost will be double.
      Thus, we don’t have plan to make the wheel cover bidirection for now. And you may explain that Tesla OEM made the wheel same way to your reviewers.
      Hope this answers your question,

  • @WinstonsGarage

    On 2:42 you can see that the TParts cover are not on the wheel in the correct direction. They are not that aerodynamic as if they were rotating in the other direction. So that cover should be on the left side. The slope side of spoke should be on the side of the rotation direction.

    • @DylanHongTech
      @DylanHongTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      These (like most covers) are universal. The left and right wheels use the same cover. Uberturbines from Tesla are the same way. I have a pinned comment with info from the manufacturer because I got so many questions about this

  • @Pyroplan

    They are looking awesome, but am I the only one who is bothered that it is asymmetrical, since these 4 covers are the same?!
    2 of them should be mirrored.. otherwise, the ones on the left side turning the other side around than the ones on the right.
    Good to see at @2:54 and @2:59
    This should also have an impact on the efficiency test, since 2 of the covers are spinning in the worst possible case.. They should be all like on the left side.. the right side is not aerodynamically good.
