I liked Rumple in S2 when they all found the truth, Henry was all eager "Do I have to call you Grandpa now?" and he was just p'ed off "You can call me what you like!"
Rumplestilskin did care about Henry tho. In like season four when he’s gathering magic into the wizards hat and has hooks heart and stuff (I can’t remember exactly) but he says all he cares about is saving Belle and Henry. Henry is all he has left of Baelfire and he wants to protect him, in his own twisted way
Probably assumed Rumple would pull a Fireball, magic blast, or something. Of course, Rumple often likes the more subtle approach when family is in the way.

@@ToxicOxie at least in season 7 we are rid of all those annoying herocrites and the toxicating relationship of CS. It's refreshing and we are left with the best versions of every character we already knew. Point this time we have a real redeemed Hook.
