Fabulous tune ... I got to see The Penguins at Yankee Stadium about a year after the tune rocketed to the Top 10 charts in 1955! They were underappreciated by nearly all the baseball fans who came to see the Yankees v. Cleveland Indians (?), but I recall my dad telling me how talented they were to be invited to sing at the Stadium!

This was such an iconic tune, and sung for decades by the original lead singer of The Penguins, the late and great Cleve Duncan. I still have my autographed photo of The Penguins that was mailed to me by Dootsie Williams in California, and have always cherished it. To listen to the Penguins sing this live in 1956 on the Alan Freed Show is a real treat for me as Freed was one of those rare white men who not only appreciated 'black music' but black singers and musicians as well. RIP, Alan

This song was a teenage anthem, a song you knew would stay with you forever - rivaling In The Still Of The Night. I was 13 in 1956 and an avid Alan Freed radio listener. I lived in Queens and went to several live shows at the Brooklyn Paramount and Fox theaters. I picked up the original Eldorados LP, the Cadillacs LP, and the original cover that was quickly pulled, Chantels LP when they first came out. This live recording of Earth Angel is great. Loved the shots of the Paramount. THANKS.

This is a fabulous live performance on-air ... who wouldn't give their eye tooth to have seen any video accompanying this performance?!! And to watch Cleve Duncan switch lead voices w/Dex Tisby during the second bridge of this tune!

Well said, Daniel. I'd pay big money to do so.

My favorite R&B/rock recording, heard in 1954 when I was 10 years old. While I was in college in the Valley...I went downtown to dootone records, and great Dootsie Williams gave me a Penquins album (Dootone Records),

I feel the same way as you do about this song, I was 13 when it came out -- isn't it such an amazing and wonderful mystery how some three-minute bit of music can have this huge and enduring effect on so many people!
