Really comprehensive, especially on optimal form. Do you have any idea why I get shooting pains from having the bar low on the palm? I seem to consistently hit a nerve when benching heavy and it makes my arms feel like they're about to explode. Also music credit at 01:25?
Hey Dr. Feigenbaum, you mentioned in 7:53 that one should retract one's shoulder blades together (retracting the scapulae) during the setup. I'm just curious if you've heard of conflicting opinions on this matter? For example, Kassem Hanson from N1 Education and Training laid out a very compelling, seamingly biomechanically sound explanation of why one should not do so in his video titled "Should you keep your scapula depressed/retracted/pinned while you press?".
Such a complete video. I'll definetly will be directing people to this one, it really covers the basics with good enough detail and it's perfectly clear
You are a new growing breed of doctors. Not the fat, arrogant, out-of-shape chemical/medication happy robot. I hope more videos are on the way - great to see a long, knowledge based video, not a click-bait style video.
Can't say I've seen alot of fat doctors ...seems like they are more likely not to be fat compared to the general population....what population other than professional athletes are as a group in better shape that mds? Thanks for the silly post.
I've never heard gripping the bar described as pinching before. I tried it and it makes a huge, huge difference. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't tried it. Thanks very much for the tip.
this is awesome. not as easy to take in as a straight up alan video (this is very dense, and more like 8 alan videos combined), but perhaps the next level of detail to excel
Low bar squat guide would be highly appreciated! The area around my elbows started to hurt last few weeks (when low bar squatting). I tried to set the grip wider/closer, have a thumbless grip, do the proud chest cue and i still get the pain. The pain itself feels like weak/kinda trembling sensation and is affecting the bench press when the bar descends approaching the chest, in which position while the weight gets heavier, the initial 1-2 reps are largely affected by the pain and the movement/force production is compromised.
Alexandros Koutoulas I had the same exact problem a few weeks ago. Something that I did which helped was I didn’t push my elbows up so high anymore. I kept my grip on the bar narrow so I could still have a tight back but I focused on keeping my elbows down and tucked in. Hope this helps.
Try focusing hard on mainting the shelf the bar sits on. You might be getting a little lazy with it. Also you might have an acute injury so even if you "fix" the problem, pain might remain for a few weeks
You're going to have to concentrate on your elbow position, assuming that is indeed the issue. I think one thing I often see Jordan and others suggest is gripping the bar with the thumb rather than thumbless. You could also try high bar for a little while, to give the area a break and some time to recover, then giving LB another shot when things start to feel better.
Thanks for the suggestions guys! Yeah I'm currently squatting high bar so it fixed the problem for now... I sometimes also move the low bar squats AFTER the bench, that way my elbows are 100% pain-free... Naptown Squid I think that's definitely one of the issues I have on the squat because when I consciously try to keep my back tight I feel like the bar sits better... Also Buddy Lake that's the hardest thing for me.. Even with a narrow grip i feels like if I move my elbows down the shelf is starting to get looser... Although I haven't experimented with it a lot since I'm currently squatting high bar. Most likely next week I'm going low bar again so will see what happens.
He does speak quite fast, thus I had to rewind it many times... still, this is the best information packed video on the subject by far!! I wish I had someone half as great (at least) to watch my bench technique and correct me. Much respect coach.... I like you more as coach than a doctor; though you seem great at both, though, you have absolutely no reason, nor should you, care about what I think. Great video.
I really liked the medical/physiological explanation after 9:06 of the risks of back pain/injury from the lumbar extension. It would be awesome to have a video where you discuss the risks (or lack thereof) of heavy weight training in general in a similar manner!
Dude you all are my hero's. Im teaching my 13 yoa how to lift. Barbell medicine's youtube channel has helpd so much. Not only helping him but correcting bad past mistakes/form and teaching my wife who lifts with us. I would love for you all to make it to Abilene Texas so I can meet and learn even more.
Amazing step by step guide! This is definitely going to help a lot of people including myself to tweak our bench to put on some serious gainzZzZz. I hope more and more people watch this so I can stop cringing at commercial gyms when I see poor form. The next couple of videos should be about the squat, deadlift, and press in the same format you just did the bench. Solid video.
This was more than just a helpful video Jordan; this is my new go-to on bench days to remind myself of absolutely everything involved in performing the movement correctly. Thanks so much dude. Love the B-roll in the beginning as well 😆
Most folks suffer from low S. S for squat. However, low B is also common, but not for lack of trying, usually the same thing over and over again, such as one-rep max attempts on the bench somewhen on a Monday (and Tuesday, and Wednesday, et cetera) and have the spotter do an increasing amount of rowing intensity.
Fantastic video and information (loved the inclusion of Alan's editing/production skills, they're always top), but please slow down your rate of speech in future videos. I had several moments where I had to pause, rewind, and listen to a segment of information a second time because you just blitzed right through it. I know that affects the length of the video and upload/render time, etc. but it's easier to absorb the information the first time around with a bit slower rate of speech, especially with anatomical and medical terminology being thrown in regularly.
IMO if a person thinks they can learn how to bench 100% properly by watching this video only once they are probably doing something wrong. A video like this NEEDS to be watched multiple times.
thanks - I 've been using the wrong grip for years. Just holding the hands in the correct position with out a bar i can feel unused muscles activate and a stronger arm in general.
Fantastic video guys. Awesome Bench press guide. This is essential for all lifters. Does Low Bench syndrome also produce Low voltage QRS complexes and heaving Apical Impulse?Keep it coming.
I use a belt on bench because using a ton of leg drive can over extend my lower back and tweak a muscle which leads to psychological effects causing you to not feel as strong, and the action of closing the lever on my belt subconsciously signals my brain that its time to perform.
at 9:58 he mentions back pain is often from to much fatigue and psycho social factors. What do you do in cases like this? I heard a lot of talk about this back pain being just psychological or whatever, but what should you do about it? Do you keep training? Is it dangerous to do so? Do you deload, take a few days off? Rest? It would be really good with a video that went in depth on what to do in cases where you have that kind of back pain.
I hope these "prescription" videos become a series on this channel. That along with the Juggernaut 'Pillar' series would dominate the TH-cam fitness education space for sure.
If one wants to train for strength rather than for numbers, would it make sense to skip the arch to increase range of motion? With other exercises, we are often told to do full range of motion.
helpful, thanks! Any advice on what to do if I get pain medial to my medial scapula on one side when benching with full ROM? I tried changing grip widths, tucking, etc
One question guys! Should I use wriststraps all the time or only when lifting heavy? My 1RM is 70kg (I know, shame) but from 50kg and more I find it difficult to keep my wrists straight. Until now I didn't want to use wriststraps to every lifting as I think it's like doing squats with belt even if the barbell is empty.
what the longer and shorter moment arms viewed from the top and the side tell us?? In the wide grip bench where the shorter moment arm viewed from the side and the longer moment arm viewed from the top, means that pecs have to do more work and front delts have to do less work???
Never heard of the compression grip before! Thank you! Gonna give it a try! Also, sir, I am studying Medicine. I plan on following a specialty related to (strength) training and athleticism. What are the specialties out there that I can follow?! Also, I am a powerlifter myself so the closest to that the better! You are an inspiration and I would like to follow something along the lines you are currently following(bringing strength into modern medicine and modern medicine into strength).
What is your opinion on using the lats to intiate the pull out of the rack and the eccentric portion of the mvt to keep your elbows tucked in? Also, does it have any importance in preventing shoulder injuries?
are you using power, compression, and bulldog at different times in the video all to refer to the same grip? or is there some, uh, nuance that I'm missing?
Dr. Feigenbaum, I am a 60 year old lifter with extremely low B. Can you write me a prescription for BRT so I can get some gainzz? That was a great tutorial and all nerdy, the way I like it. Jen Thompson has a benching video series that is also really good.
A definitive guide on how to bench press! Thanks to Alan Thrall of Untamed Strength for editing and directing. Tell us what you think!

One question: Where did Jordan get those weightlifting shoes from?

Are doctors in the US actually fat?
Wow dude this is by far the most detailed guide to the Bench Press I've ever seen!!
8:00 Now that mark right there tells you this is a man who does a lot of low-bar squatting!
My dad's a physician and that means he'll only listen to another doc for advice...good thing i found you guys. I'll direct him towards your videos
This is fantastic. I'm going to apply that grip on my next bench session. Been struggling to efficiently bench 100kg for a month now. PERFECT.
The leg drive cue about digging your heels before you valsalva and perform the rep changed my life...seriously thank you!
This is the best video on the bench press, please make more like this
I love this video!!!! As a beginner powerlifter, this kind of video is invaluable. Thank you 🤗
This is the best bench tutorial I have seen to date...
I have seen hundreds of "How to bench"-videos! Overall this is the best - Great work
By far the single most comprehensive video and easy to follow bench press instructional video I have seen. Thank you for the quality work!
Finally a video that explains grip the best
I've never heard gripping the bar described as pinching before. I tried it and it makes a huge, huge difference. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't tried it. Thanks very much for the tip.
Definitely one of if not the best video on the bench I've seen and has helped immensely
