Takeaways from the comments so far:
The show is just good and people like it a lot.
    Crazy
Well at least I learned a bunch of stuff about the anime landscape from all my stupidly over detailed research while making this video
Ok fr tho, from people are saying, I'm now thinking it's a combination of the show being accessible to non-anime audiences and the extreme success of the manga which brought this adaptation to the eyes of many people who wouldn't even be watching anything this season otherwise

People really underestimate how popular the manga series is. SxF breaks a lot of record for Jump+ even at its earliest volume. 15M+ copies sold, BEFORE anime airing is a rare feat. Almost ridiculous. Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer, 2 popular anime series, can't even break 10M before it's anime airing. That popularity translate to the anime current success and push the series on a higher level compared to the other series.

Also, regarding the comedy section of the video, the anime actually hardly able to capture the comedic timing of the series. The manga executed the comedy much, MUCH better in a lot of aspect. Try to read 10 chapter of the manga and you would realize Endo is a genius in how he use the panel placement, panel size and character expression to deliver the comedy aspect in the series.

I think a lot of people are talking about the appeal of the spy part of this anime but I think what makes this premise special is the family part. the growing bond between these weirdos forming something like an actual family. Not original but rarely done in a mature way in anime.

Agreeing with a lot of other people, I didn’t expect to like Spy so much, but because it was so easy to talk to other people about and laugh alongside others with, I realized I cherished it immediately for those reasons. The show has an incredibly simple premise and can be watched in a group, or with family, or even be recommended regardless of taste! Only because of it’s simplicity. The pacing, tonnage, and characters are so pleasant. I don’t know if it’ll continue this or not, but I don’t mind a nice little show surprising me each week.

The first evidence of spying we have dates back to about 1274 BC, and families are probably older than that. So, there’s probably a vocal portion of the spy fandom who has been waiting around 3,848 years for this inevitable crossover, so it is understandable there is this much hype, and that’s not even counting the first humans who asked “What if I just… lied?” who have probably been waiting for millennia for the epic crossover of these two concepts.

  • @olpert

Apart from the fact that it's good, funny, and heartfelt (and has a big manga fanbase for good reason), it's also just not got any of the things that usually keep out people from liking anime. No super sexualized teens or weird pedo stuff, it's just got very little a general audience would consider objectionable. The key to getting a high score on a site like MAL is not just being good, it's also not being bad in aspects that make people really dislike your show. For example, Bakemonogatari is highly praised by many many people, but also heavily disliked by many for the shows pedophilic and incestuous elements, undestandably so.
Spy X Family does not have a hatebase, so to speak.

This video is a good lesson for any aspiring storytellers out there.
If you want your story to succeed, don't worry about making it the most original, most unique story of all time. That won't help because it's not possible. Everything's been done. Like the video said, SpyxFamily isn't that original or unique or a story exquisitely designed and executed.
No, instead endeavor to make characters and situations that *emotionally resonate* with your readers/viewers. Thats where SpyxFamily is generally succeeding.
However, whether a story will emotionally resonate with a person is ultimately subjective. If it doesn't, it doesn't. 🤷🏿‍♂️

I think it's success is just that it's simple. It doesn't have a convoluted premise, or expansive storyline. The show is just that; a telepath, an assassin and a spy pretend to be a family, while trying to hide who they are from each other. I think in terms of manga and anime, we've had so many 'tryhards' (positive and negative) that something that puts so much style and charisma into a simple show would end up being so well received. You don't have to follow the episodes the whole way or think too much about the themes. It just is, so all artistic effort is put into making it the best 'average' thing it could be. Also, I've read the manga and trust me, the writing has a way of making you care so much about these characters without forcing it. I mean right now, it's exploring a bit about Loid/Twilight's past and I don't think we even know his real name yet. Simple but efficient storytelling is what it is, honestly.
P.S. The thing about Loid being unaware of Yor's profession is that you come to learn that he's just as weird as she is. The point is that he's so desensitized to violence that it doesn't seem odd for her to be the way she is. The same could be said about both of them. I mean, he threw a grenade at his supposed patients, and she didn't even bat an eye. She catches a tray of food without spilling with her legs and he doesn't care because he'd probably do the same. The humor in their situation is that they all try so hard to hide who they are from each other, and it works. But the reason is that they are the same kind of odd that it simply doesn't register. Loid and Your have moments where they think that other people are different, but they've never thought that about each other. People think Anya is weird, but Loid and Yor just think she's dumb or childish. Because no one is actively suspecting the other (except for Anya who knows about them, whilst no one knows about her) you can just focus on the story as is without having to rehash the same plot over and over again.
(Sorry for the long post, just loved the manga ever since it came out)

    • @r3medyproductions
      @r3medyproductions 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Lol I still love how when she caught the trey with her foot, Loid was just like "don't use your feet next time" or something like that and said it genuinely. Also the fact that he rushed in there all bloody and Yor was just like "ok" and didn't seem to care much. I really like that you mentioned how they both are weird and are just used to violence that neither one of them gets suspicious since they both are so used to it.

    • @lemonlypop
      @lemonlypop 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

At least personally, I love how genuine it is. The whole point is how these people who regularly hide so much of themselves are in reality the most committed and genuine characters. The family is fake, but you see real bonds being formed. You really want to see them formed because Anya is the closest thing to an mc, and all she wants is a family that genuinely cares. So she gets adopted by Loid, a man so caring he’s willing to sacrifice his entire life and being for others to not be ruined by war like him, and Yor an incredibly sweet woman who learned to kill as a teenager just to take care of her little brother. It isn’t trying to be complex or original. It’s trying to be genuine with genuinely sweet characters and genuinely bad ass moments for some excitement. There’s so much heart to every part of it, and that’s why it gets to me.

i think it has a lot to do with the popularity of the manga. the manga absolutely blew up. it was last year's 8th highest selling manga (without an anime). it is also the 24th most popular manga on MAL, over Kaguya sama, Black Clover and Haikyuu. the great animation, the simple but effective premise (which consists of common tropes yes, but it isnt played like this usually), the lack of "weird anime-isms", cuteness, comedy (esp compared to other anime, which are pretty unfunny, imo) is why this is so popular. literally anyone can watch and enjoy this. plus the dedicated following is probably why this got such a high score on MAL. also recency bias lol. it will slowly lower its score i think, not too much but it will.

Spy fans get some spy action and gadget fun, fans of bloody action and assassin fans get something, superhuman /mind reader fans have something, some people enjoy the different genres interacting and reacting to one another and some just enjoy it as a whole.
But as you said the assassin showing off her abilities and the worlds best spy not picking up on it, definitely draws away from the realism and believability. But its just there for humor and not meant to be considered important to the story. Its there for the viewers and not meant to drive the story. its similar to Komi from komi cant communicate randomly growing cat ears. but here the humor is seen and reacted by the spy so it does seem a little off at times

I think there's such thing as over-criticism when it comes to media. The kind of criticism that should be directed at any media should in part be informed by what said media is attempting to accomplish. And I think the single most important thing that Spy x Family attempts to accomplish is the feeling of found, genuine family. The interplay of action, drama, and comedy are all in service of that end. And especially because of the comedy and wholesomeness, it's easier to forgive things like Loid and Yor's blindness to what should be onvious about each other's true identities when it would otherwise be a hard pill to swallow in a more serious story. Those milder undertones help to smooth out edges that would otherwise stick out more in service of the overall positive and emotional vibe the story is aiming for.

I think it’s so popular because it explores a subject that isn’t really often done in anime, just a straight up happy family. There’s been more anime about married couples rather than highschool romance recently, but still not much about like, raising a kid together and building a family. The art is really pretty, the humor is really well written, it’s just super sweet and heartwarming. All the other anime I can think of off hand that center around families usually have strong plot points about the real life struggles families have. I think spy x family is a breath of fresh air where we can pretend families don’t worry about money and personality differences and stress and life just kinda! Being hard. Even when there are struggles, spy x family just makes it seems like it’s not a problem at all because of how capable the main characters are. I think it’s a lot of wish fulfillment for something we haven’t seen much of yet.

I will say personally. I’m getting kinda bored. Let me explain, the love the concept of an assassin, a telepath and a spy with a psychic dog amazing and fresh and watching them play house. However my biggest gripe with it so far is that almost everyone is trying to please Loid. Don’t get me wrong I’m not one of those “toxic masculinity male feminist”. However I just wish more development was giving to Yor. We’ve seen several chapters of Loid going on different missions and all Yor has done so far is try to cook, get drunk and act a fool, worry about how she’s not becoming the ideal wife and occasionally doing some cool high kicks. But that’s it, why doesn’t she get more solo missions. There was a chapter that implied she was on multiple missions, but it turns out it was only about her learning to cook. I mean seriously why can’t she also have some chapters where we see her doing missions as Loid? Also even Anya comes across a bit stupid, I know she’s a little girl but I have a four year old niece and even she’s not this dense. I only read two chapters from vol 6, the one with Loid and Bond (anything with Bond is golden in my book) and the chapter with Damien and his friends. But the rest of it I just skimmed through because it just read as filler. I want to love this manga more but it feels like a chore to get through because so many chapters just feel like filler and nothing is pushing the main story forward and Anya and Yor feel stagnant, like the writer doesn’t know what to do with them. I don’t hate it, but it can be so much better. Maybe the other volumes will keep me engaged but as of now I’m thinking of just dropping it.

Just remember that you don't have to be a stereotypical feminist in order to ask for better character development for a female character. They downplayed her very very badly.

Thank you!! I feel like I’m the only one who is bored of this manga series. It feels like filler most volumes because it’s the same thing over and over. Loid gets a mission, he goes and does it and Anya usually tries to help with it in some way while Yor is on the sidelines or not in it at all. Way too repetitive. And my niece is 4 and is pretty smart, she doesn’t talk or act like Anya at all so I 100% agree with you on that too. They kind of depict her more like a 2-3 year old.

I can only speculate why its success bothers some. I think it’s especially prevalent among battle shounen fans, where they have so much shows to compete with and get criticized by other fandoms as mid. Spy family isn’t in that realm so it can’t be compared in such a way and haters probably don’t even touch it since it’s not that battle shounen realm. You can’t hate on its animation and say it’s mid compared to demon slayer S2 since that’s not what it is trying to do.
Also, you may not see it as great, but there’s so many good parts like the OST, voice actors, production, the animation itself, and it does everything well, maybe not any one thing greater than anyone who’s ever done it, but it’s solid in every way and that is enough to be great for many. Characters are very fun and memorable.
I also speculate this is making fans of the upcoming chainsaw man anime sweat, it’s going to get equal if not more hype, but it does fall in the realm of battle shounen so it is going to be gutted by toxic fans from other fandoms (jjk, demon slayer, my hero, aot, bleach, black clover, dragon ball, FMAB) who all swear their battle shounen show is the peak and all others are inferior and mid.
It’s a show that mixes multiple genres, and it does it pretty damn well. It is an adventure, it’s comedy, it dabbles in action, gives us hints of romance, is wholesome, does NOT have fan service which is huge for a lot of people who are new to anime or avoided it because of fan service. This is an anime I would recommend to anyone, regardless of their prefer genre (barring edge lords who claim to only live in the darkness)

My guy, the manga was already massively, massively popular before it even got an anime adaptation, and there's a reason for that. It's consistently hilarious and heartwarming with great art and lovable characters. Anime Only fans are just now experiencing what manga readers have known since 2019.
Why is it so massively popular though? It legitimately appeals to everyone. It has action and comedy. Twilight is hot, Yor is hot. Anya is freaking adorable. The supporting cast the anime has only begun to introduce is great. It's just an instantly enjoyable show.

    • @Amuro1X
      @Amuro1X 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

After finishing the video, and getting to your point about "plotholes' I get why you don't understand the humor in the show. You're trying to apply logic to it. You're supposed to believe Twilight is the best spy ever because he's able to make an incredibly realistic face mask and perfectly mimic the voice of a random thug in no time flat. He can speed read entire books in seconds, has picture perfect memory, and can fight 36 guys in ten seconds. All if that is impossible. It's his hyper competence that makes him struggling with a 4 year old pretending to be six and willing to brush aside all of Yor's weirdness for the sake of his mission so hysterical.
I think you need to stop viewing the show through the lense of "why is this so popular" and just enjoy it on it's own terms.

  • @jessielefey
    @jessielefey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's comfort food.
Like, that's the appeal. It's good because it's simple, because it's not *really* a surprise, because it's not emotionally challenging. It is a slice of life anime tucked inside what's basically a shonen anime setup. It's Mr and Mrs Smith while also being Little Orphan Annie. It's all the comedy bits from FMA:B with, so far anyway, none of the trauma. It's... very fanfic-y even, but not in the bad way people usually mean that. In the coffeeshop AU, domestic fluff fic way.
And honestly I think that's key. I think people are really burnt out right now, and just want something soft to hug. If you want an apocalypse with deep ethical questions, you can turn on the news, a lot of people just can't bear it in their escapist fiction right now.
But. Like all comfort food, it's all about execution. The less ingredients you use, the less room for error there is. It's not reinventing the wheel, but it is absolutely a top of the line example of a tire, if my very confused metaphors make sense.
It's really easy to screw something like this up, and land in cloying or cringe or tonal whiplash or so divorced from reality that all dramatic/character tension is lost. Threading the needle the way they are takes a lot of skill, and I think people know that too even if they don't know how to explain why very well.
Things get higher grades not from being Objectively Perfect on some universal scale, so much as how close to its own platonic ideal the thing gets. Twilight doesn't overthink Yor, because there would be no story if he did, and we want there to be more story, so we -- like him -- also just don't overthink it. It's not trying to be realistic, it's trying to earnestly joyful, so we don't care that it's not realistic any more than, like, 80's action movies or Roger Moore-era Bond movies or Dragonball or Overlord. (I think the earnestness is part of it too. It's got none of the snark or irony or embarassment that's so ever-present these days. It knows what it is, but it is having so much fun being what it is and it wants you to be having fun too. It's black and white tv Addams Family, just 100% all in on the ridiculousness of its premise and consuming every piece of its own scenery while doing it.)

I think things will become more apparent as the show goes on and we get more into the material that is in the manga. That said, even with what has been shown so far, I personally think is enough to show how good of a story this is already. I mean at times it has a bit more "cutesy" humor so I guess the funny aspect is subjective but to me, the humor is a big factor to pushing the story along and keeping the darker underlying themes and plot out of our minds. I think that is important since it shows that things are going pretty ok for Loid, Yor, and Anya being together but we also get reminded why they became a family and think about will this family turn into something true and genuine or will it end when the mission and ends?
You mentioned how you don't understand why Loid can't figure out that Yor is an assassin. I think for one this is meant to be kind of a running joke of Loid saying he has been a spy for 10 years and knows all this stuff but literally can't identify that an assassin is living with him as his wife. I think why they decided to do this as well is to show that Yor is the only one, besides Anya, who can make Loid relax and not feel like a spy for a second. Immediately when he first met her, he couldn't figure her out. I think it also adds onto the idea that both Yor and Anya are nothing at all similar to what Loid has dealt with before so he can't treat them the same as he would treat people on other missions. He has to create the relationships and keep it strong in order for them to stay a family and for the mission to succeed. He may be this big time spy who is one of the greatest in the world but over-and-over again, he mentions how difficult this mission is because he has to rely on other people to complete their roles rather than using them in the same ways he has used people in the past.
Now, I think why this story is so great to me is due to the theme of the show, the comedy, the wholesomeness, and the overall writing and flow the story has. I may be a little bias since I have read most of the volumes of the manga already, but I have had the same feeling watching the anime as when I read the manga. I was drawn to the concept of spies already but to add the idea that there is an assassin as his wife who could create conflict within the family later on and to have a daughter who he thinks is just a regular 6 year old but actually has telepathy, stirs up the idea that chaos will happen and this mission will not be easy for Loid.
They all live double lives and I feel like that adds the excitement to it. Anya helps Loid and Yor out by reading their minds and even tho she can't always help out, she does her best anyway. I think the fact that she can read minds also adds to the comedic factor because, yes we get to be told what is going on in peoples heads through Anya but there is so much she understands and doesn't understand that can leave room for jokes since she knows things that other people don't and tries to use it to her advantage but it doesn't always work in her favor. It may take away some shock factor of having something be revealed but we get shocked at the same time she gets shocked. There's also still that underlying theme of, we know that Yor is an assassin and Loid is a spy but one day they will probably find each other out and when that comes, what will happen? Will they fight? Will they have to kill each other? Will they decided to end their profession since they are now too attached to each other? To me, that is something I always keep in the back of my mind especially as the story builds and goes along. When will their own secret lives get in the way too much that it messes up the family but the family is so connected to the point that they don't know exactly what to do now?
I probably went into way more detail and I've kinda wanted to even maybe make a video about this story on my own because I love it very much. I think they take a normal idea and make it something unique that has kept my attention every second of each episode and every page of the manga. I know the show and story isn't for everyone but I think part of what makes it so special to me and a lot of others is being able to relate to aspects of the show while also having the show be unpredictable and mesh a variety of ideas or genres together that I personally haven't seen done before or done this well.
Anyway, sorry to write an essay, but I hope at least some what of what I have said makes sense and gives you a little bit of an idea to why I and other people like it. I hope the show will get better for you and if it doesn't, I guess this show just may not be your type of show and that's ok.

The thing with Spy x Family is that I don't feel any soul in it. I think the author even said he himself doesn't like the characters, he just wrote what he thought would be most popular with fans. It's hyped about so much, but I personally found it to be really good. The mix of traits that the author put into the characters, the setting, everything is just so randomly picked but for some reason it fits like a glove. It also has different genres in it, not just pure comedy (well, the main genre is comedy but you know...). I'm still in the hype train of this series but I can definitely see myself stop being a fanboy in a couple of weeks due to getting used to it and also having already read the manga, I already know what's going to happen in the anime. I'll still watch every episode as soon as it comes out though. The production is very high quality and it's just a very good anime series in general. For me, it definitely deserves what it currently stands to right now.

Its the sum of some factors: it has a "fresh premise" ( its not another fantasy isekai/teen school story/idol/shonen), it is airing in a season that its not seen any other big famous show to fight for attention (love is war is somewhat famous but not in the level of attack on titan and is in its 3° season.... so most of it's watches are long time fans not new people), the show has great art and animation, the show has been hyped in the anime community by famous youtubers.

@@denysvision That’s a good question. For many of its fans, Spy x Family is just some wholesomeness with humor thrown in while having enough to it to appeal to almost anyone. It seems to be like a Saturday cartoon kind of show where the enjoyment comes from sharing it with other people you care about over its actual plot’s quality and attributes like shock value or creativity. But this is the anime and not the manga. The manga overall seems to be better written. There is nothing inherently wrong with wanting more from it, but I am not sure where exactly you would like for it to expand upon its potential.

I mean when i first heard of spy x family i was drawn to it. Partly because of the idea of keeping secrets from the people you're supposed to be closest too. When i read the manga I came to understand why this show got so popular. It wasn't because of the action scenes or its comedy. I think it was just the feeling it conveyed of how a family is like. They just work as a family. Its wholesome deep down and the best part is that it takes place in a time after a war where things are very unstable and those themes show up from time to time. I like how well it writes child characters like anya and damian because children in anime usually annoy me so i was pleasantly surprised when i didn't end up hating anya. The family aspect of the show is the biggest reason why though. After a long day you can just open an episode of spy x family for a guaranteed good time and few chuckles. It leaves you relaxed and rooting for those characters and for their bond to grow stronger. It also doesn't really have a reason to hate it. I can see how some very popular animes can get hated on but spy x family just doesn't do anything to get you to hate it. There are few things but they're not always there, like yuri for example. Also the main complaint i saw about it is the fact that it doesn't have enough action but people forget that its a slice of life genre so thats on them.

The comedy is mostly the point. This is not a dark, serious spy story. It's a heartwarming family comedy. Think of this as more like a sitcom. The western spy series that Spy Family has the most in common with is the classic Get Smart from the 60s. There is some occasional violence in Spy Family, but honestly, that's still more fun than serious. There is some occasional drama, but again, every sitcom still has some dramatic moments. Spy Family is popular because it's a very well done sitcom with a fun premise and a cast of lovable characters. Loid knows that Yor is kinda weird, but he's also just impressed that she's good in a fight. And Yor is actually pretty oblivious about a lot of things. Killing and fighting are the only things she's really competent in. She's very socially inept. Anya is adorable and hilarious. The story doesn't need to be super complicated, especially in a sitcom. You just need great character dynamics and great comedy.

I didn't much care for the manga, I didn't much care for the first half of the first episode (which covered the part of the manga I read). What I like about it appears in the second half of the first episode - wonderfully animated action, found family tropes with the desire to care for Anya and a killer OST. The second and third episodes ran it home for me with Yor being beautiful, zany and for all her mannerisms a great person for Anya to have in her life and when I heard the OP and ED I was hooked. This is one of those turn-off my brain shows, when I over-look the small plot-holes, like why was the spy who was trying to prevent a war tasked with stealing a painting, I find a sweet, somewhat funny and in terms of action and emotions an engaging show.

I'm not much of a anime lover, but I've seen some of it.
Living in a very heavily anime influenced country (Korea), I've seen so many "weird" heavily "weeb" looking anime in my life.
I know not all anime are like that, but just from the drawing style, it was never my cup of tea.
But to my surprise Spy Family, since everyone has been talking about it, I decided to give it a chance and it was great.
Plot is simple, but I don't think the main point is the "Spy" aspect but more of how family should communicate and ways to understand each other when there's a conflict or problem.
It's very subtle and sometimes it's very showing, and I think this is a beauty of this anime.
Especially how the writer decided to give Anya a "special power" which is to read someone's mind is actually telling the audience that often times children is smarter than
most adults think and I think this is a clever way to send that message.
And I like how this anime is not just.."real life drama" kind of anime but more like a mix of..fantasy? but also story itself is very grounded to reality sometimes.

The central themes and the such are nice and can be analyzed, but sometimes taking a step back and just enjoying a show is awesome. In an era of anime where heavy stories and thick plots rule, having a simple show about a family growing closer with comedy shenanigans is just great.

I felt brand new. No, it's just that I'm desperate for any anime which has above the average writing

The characters are charismatic, the plot has the interesting element that Anya knows everyone's secret and no one knows hers, and at the same time, she behaves like the child that she is, and not like those super genius characters that people are used to associating with this kind of thing. It's a comforting plot, because while it's funny and has action and drama, it makes you buy that they're going to become a family and makes you curious about how they're going to behave with the situations that arise. I also like that a lot of the humor is behavioral and comes with different situations, and not that rude and crass humor. That's it.

I think that people just want to relax. Especially nowadays. But what sets this show apart from for example (most of) slice of life is that there is action. There is a lot going on but it's not super dramatic (at least for now). The setting feels familiar to western audience. The cast is not large but still for every demographic. The family is "traditional" but not "boring". In fact it has "found" feeling to it. It's easy going enough to not be annoying because of it's flaws and done well enough to be genuinely enjoyable.

I think what also helped it's success is the fact that it's a show that isn't an Iskiai. while Spy shows are popular in the eye of an non-anime audience, it's not always done in anime as a whole in my many years of watching and growing up with anime (I started watching in 1994 when Anime had it's biggest boom to the public knowledge outside Otaku shops thanks to programs like Toonami on Cartoon Network, and on and off relationship to watching anime in my adult years now). Assassins, yes was popular since early days of anime. Spies? Not so much with the exceptions of the few that were James bond knockoffs. It's kinda like how the Iskiai had a huge boom randomly with Sword Art online even though it's not "iskiai" in the same sense as actual shows that follow other worlds are. Though the bigger starter of the Iskiai boom was the manga form of Mushoku Tensei apparently. But in a time where Iskiai became the normal genre where people are exsaughed by it, Spy x Family is actually an refreshing moment for most people as in the west, spy shows is the norm, but in the anime sphere, no so much.

I am primarily a Manga reader over an anime watcher, but I did watch the anime adaptation with my wife, while I am up to date on the Manga.
The reason I absolutely adore this story is because how touching the family dynamic is. Being nearly 40yo seeing such a heartwarming story and the way the genuine humanity of both Loyd and Yor comes out naturally from 2 characters that are "fake" by trade just hits me in the feelings.
But for the anime specifically, if I had to hazard a guess, I would say the main draw is Anya's spectacular voice acting by Atsumi Tanezaki: it is probably the only thing from the anime that is a positive over the Manga.
In general I also have to note that Anya is the first time ever in 30 years of watching anime wherr a small child character not only doesn't fucking suck, but is actually great

The episodes so far are good (not great like you say), since they also still need to spend a lot of time establishing the cast and the premise.

The plot only is not the only important thing for a movie/show/videogame ecc.
The important is how the story is told, for example
    Shining (Movie)
Plot: Man goes crazy in a hotel. The end
How it's told: Isolation, empty and looping hallways, Jack slowly losing his mental health, great horror pacing and well made uncanny valley vibes
The plot of a show, movie or whatever can be very simple and predictable but if it's executed very well it can form even a very enjoyable and even top tier piece of media

Oh yeah, that's totally true. I didn't mean to imply that people like the show just because of its premise. It's just that the premise being super unique and creative was something I saw basically every review of the show talking about. Now I'm thinking that it might be because every reviewer on the planet likes to give a plot summary of the show they're reviewing and they all just felt the need to mention that they liked the premise when doing that segment. Idk

I personally think that a Mal score shouldn't be used to determine how good a show is. From my understanding, and from what was said in the video, the way the site works is that any anime could get review bombed for better or for worse. So, a score can be artificially raised or lowered depending on the fanbase and their goals. I've heard rumors of FMA fans bombing other shows so that FMA keeps its place on the chart. And assuming the show doesn't deserve that score because the fans watching it didn't give it a low score doesn't make sense. If someone watches a show and likes it, why shouldn't they give it a high score? Looking at a high score and assuming that it will be lower by seasons end, while true based on previous evidence, doesn't mean anything.
The show is fun to watch. The characters are fun and it's enjoyable. The designs are pleasant, and the background drama is interesting. I'm interested in seeing how things will evolve from here, now that the foundation is nearly set.

    • @Krossxc
      @Krossxc  2 ปีที่แล้ว

That stuff is all true, it's just that when there is an artificial reason for why a show is rated higher/lower, it's usually a very visible reason. That's why I spent dumb amounts of time researching this. Ultimately, I think this comment section is overall pretty reflective of why people like it, which is for the same reasons you mentioned

to answer the question of "why do you like it" its because its a very wholesome show of found family and I find myself cheering for their success.
I get your criticism but it seems to miss alot of what people love about the show. The show i feel was never really the most creative but is different then what the more main stream idea of hero or romantic comedy. So although not original it feels fresh.
The comedy i will admit is fully subjective but for me its more that its cute wholesome comedy and I feel our taste would clash as I really dont care for the "yor is horny at a killing things". Probably one of a few thing that makes me kind of dislike it slightly as it feels like out of place for me.

I didn't understand the hype either until watching it myself.
Something about the swapping POV that includes a young child's thought processes just adds to and sustains the over-the-top silly tone the show has. But it also plays on a lot of tropes people are used to seeing and plays them totally straight and it's not intended to be taken seriously.
The series is probably more than well aware of its plot holes, but maybe that's partially the point? It's downright silly that obvious things go unnoticed, and that's the type of humour this show is hinging on. It just wants to be silly and have a cute family dynamic to support it as well. It's very charming in its own right and just one of those anime you can shut off your brain and enjoy it for what it is.
I'm someone who mostly only enjoys media that has a large cast that I can spend hours delving into individual dynamics between all the characters, but this type of thing is the exception for me: just dumb, mindless fun.

I think it's a 10 because it's the only spy movie/show I've seen that wasn't just an excuse to see people fight. There is fighting, but it's more then that, we see him go through a mission through manipulating people and, Anya is so cute. I've heard people say she's annoying, but yeah, kids often have a. tinge of annoying, and if they're just cute, it's not realistic. The school scenes are so fun people we see these disgustingly poche kids be just kids who have strict parents.
The simplicity in the concept is something I like because it's something new and unique, but it isn't trying to hard to be something radical. It's just about family and espionage, that's all. ANd on that note, I've never seen a compelling show about parents being parents, so this is a blast of new to me.
