Still one of my favorite concerts I ever attended... I was 16 in 1983 and saw AFOS with the FIXX. Hell of a show. AFOS played all tracks from the two albums they'd released so far, it was cool. Agree that Paul is probably underrated, he definitely had some chops... bit like Warren Cuccirello from Missing Persons / Duran Duran... A lot of the so called 'new wave' musicians were considered less talented because of the music they chose to play... now compare it the crap that passes for pop music now? Holy smokes...
Hey ...I was 19 that tour of AFOS and the Fixx and my ride to the venue canceled me and I was never over it! I still cry over it LOL I love AFOS and DD so much STILL. Awesome that you got to see them in the 80s! They played at the Mann Music Center in Philadelphia that tour that I missed!!!
What a great song. All the band shines in this one, especially Paul. He really was the band's secret weapon. Hope he's doing good. I'm glad their making music again.
Sadly Paul suffered a stroke in early 2020 that he's still recovering from, though I have heard he is doing better. Poor guy has been through it. I feel for him so much.
I've been telling people how good they were back then but folks wouldn't listen. I've always thought it's sad that so many never got past I Ran. They were better than that song. It's not me talking is one of my faves. Takes me back to when music was good.
I still dance at shows. I might record a little snippet of a song, but then I'm right back to dancing. My legs are usually rubber by the end of the night.
Came here for Paul Reynolds but Frank playing amazing bass lines whilst doing his 80s dancing is awesome. That tone that Paul has is brilliant, massive fan of him, shame the industry broke him
There was a lot going on with Reno. He was under a lot of stress from the pressure of fame, constantly touring... and having to deal with Mike's massive ego and constant bullying,/mind games. No one was really looking out for him even though he was the youngest, and he ended up finding not so great ways to cope with it all (drugs & alcohol). He was under so much stress it was making him physically sick. He started having panic attacks and didn't want to tour anymore. He also felt he was being held back musically as he was writing guitar parts that weren't being used & didn't like Mike was always drowning him out in the mix (Mike was allegedly very jealous of Paul's talent). After he left AFOS, Paul took a year off where he didn't do anything... he didn't even tune a guitar (he was recovering from a nervous breakdown& trying to get his personal issues sorted). But he did get back into music and played in some other bands around Liverpool in the late 80s into the early 90s (Frank was in one of those bands as well), but none of them achieved the level of success AFOS did. He also did freelance & odd session work. In the mid 90s he switched to mainly playing acoustic.
God, this song fills me with such joy! The days before mobile phones, people dancing along with the band instead of filming the event to post later, totally loved the 80s, Paul and those muscles and specs!!!
Not only did Paul kick-ass as an amazing guitar player, but back then... he was SEXY AF! And I'm like totally straight, yo! lol One of my fav guitar players of all times. Classic AFOS just rocks still.
In most of the videos Paul looks so effortless playing the guitar. This is one of those rare videos in which it looks as if he is actually trying(eg- 2:18), and when he tries to play a guitar, it doesn't seem like he's playing it anymore, it looks and sounds as if the poor guitar is getting owned.
All the comments about paul reynolds...yes hes great but the entire band is on fire here. Underrated live band. That being said, reynolds IS tearing it up here.
Agree, the whole band makes the whole band, which then makes the entire song, live or recorded, not just the guitarist alone. Flock of Seagulls & their charted songs, as one example, would have never made it to the 21st century in our memories if it was just a lone guitarist on stage with no one else & no prerecorded backing tracks either, only just playing his parts in the song as the song goes by. 08/17/24
@@robwebnoid5763 True, but Paul Reynolds' guitar is what made AFOS stand out among other similar bands at the time. They were a guitar-driven synth band.
Favorite sci-fi Band!!! ALL flocks GREAT! Paul Reynolds WOW! Below the hair Mike can sing with fun lyrics he's so expressive! ..Frank Maudsley BASS PLAYING GROOVES! His Brother can HIT that BEAT!
Oh this is fucking MARVELOUS!!! I saw them twice back in the 80's and absolutely still love them. I know everybody loves Paul, I do too, but the four of them are magic together!
Too bad Mike's ego got in the way of that. Though when he went to reform the band in the early 90s, Mike supposedly asked the other 3 guys about coming back and they all said no. SO he hired other guys instead. 🙄
You know any threads after any flock of seagulls video has loads of comments about how cool Paul was both as a guitarist and as presence. I gotta agree he was so cool.
Success can be poison, this band should've been huge ( yes, I am aware of the hits) but look at the crowd, the band was tight, Paul's playing was always amazing-the ingredients were all there. But the songs live on, I played many of theirs when I DJ'D for a club back in the 80s, and : They were All Dancing..peace
I read somewhere that you notice this was in the days before mobile phones/ cameras and everybody is dancing and having a great time rather than filming! Wish those days were forever
Then people dancing, enjoying life, sharing a moment. Now people recording on their phones and posting on social media. Yep! I’ll admit I’ve turned into a grumpy, old fart. It’s not me talking! 🤪
Gregory, Paul, Frank and Ali was why this band worked for me PAUL was a star and he was so damn young, the SOUND he had during that era NOONE had, the style he had playing guitar NO ONE had, he was in his own orbit I don't even think he knew how SPECIAL his talent was at the time.
@@carllouisyoung For sure both Paul, the band, even record company did not realize they had such 'star' presence in Paul. Years go by like this, everyone including the artist themselves and realize, what they gave up!!

Joe James Armando I love both bands. I believe Edge could rip guitar like Paul Reynolds but chooses to be low key to his own personality. The Fly, Until The End of The World, 11 Oclock Tick Tock, Electric Co., An Cat Duhb. I did wish he would open up like Paul throught the decades tho. 😕
Unfortunately that will never happen. Mike prefers his current touring band. Plus Reno sadly suffered a stroke in early 2020 and can't play guitar anymore. He's officially retired.
Paul Reynolds is a BEAST!!!! One of the greatest guitarist of all time!!
So underrated & appreciated back then though. Still kind of is now. But those of us who know...
Pretty much a guitar drifter! 🏁
Man, I am so thankful for TH-cam so I can see Paul Reynolds in all his glory -happy crying-
Paul's playing is insane here, and Mike is really nailing the vocals, proving that he is capable of singing
Paul's use of phrasing just rocks.
Alien Hendrix.
Seriously, they sound amazing!
Reno is such a Boss he doesnt even have to try! 😏
They were a fantastic live group. Not many bands could pull off live what they did on the album in the studio. These guys did.
It depends on the venue.
Damn sure did!
Seriously, almost identical!
Paul Reynolds and his magic hands playing his guitar 🎸 one of the best ever!!!
Yeh man cool...
That guitar player omg omg omg 🙏
Not only great thechnique but also all the shades of the rainbow and sensitive playing.
The guitar stylings of Paul Reynolds totally defined and influenced the 80s and beyond!!! He was an innovator and a genius. Just a special human.
Paul Reynolds was/is awesome.
Reno had such a unique style. Never seen anyone play like him. He was really a musical genius.

What a great song. All the band shines in this one, especially Paul. He really was the band's secret weapon. Hope he's doing good. I'm glad their making music again.

Jeff Johnson too busy holding their phones still recording the concert

Paul Reynolds is a genius to have acquired such a playing technique as a teenager.
I couldn't agree more
Was a big loss when he decided to bow out of playing in a band. I understand his reasons, but still a drag.
@Lima Charlie Paul said in an interview once he started played when he was around 10 years old.

Easily agree. His style of playing is what formed many ages of music.
He plays on a jazz band.
